Миграционные намерения учащейся молодежи Республики Бурятия: результаты социологического исследования

The article examines the migration intentions of the students of the Republic of Buryatia as a factor that poses a potential threat to the priority development of the region. Taking into account the sufficient degree of theoretical elaboration of the affected scientific issues, it is important to note that it remains relevant due to the observed trend of increasing migration rates from the region of students. The empirical basis of the study was the results of a sociological survey conducted by the author, in which 3,655 respondents from among the representatives of young students took part: students of grades 9‒11 of educational institutions of the Republic of Buryatia, as well as students of professional educational organizations and higher educational institutions of Ulan-Ude. Based on a descriptive analysis of the data obtained from the results of a sociological survey, the author identified the migration intentions of a wide category of representatives of the region’s student youth, which in the future may cause an increase in migration outflow, which poses a potential threat to the socio-economic development of the Republic of Buryatia; proposals were made to minimize factors contributing to the migration outflow of students from the region, having elements of scientific novelty and practical significance.

‘japa’ syndrome of Nigerian youths as a survival strategy: A socio-economic perspective

Nigeria is often referred to as the giant of Africa; still, it has over the last two years experienced an alarming surge in the migration of young Nigerians to other developed states. Factors such as the chronic unemployment rate, which stands at 33.3% as of 2020, high levels of insecurity, and unfulfilled aspirations have caused increased pressure in the search for better opportunities abroad. More interestingly, the increased migration rate most likely has nothing to do with the idolisation of these states, but rather is largely due to a lack of national development and economic growth, as youths have been found to migrate to countries with better economies within Africa. Although no accurate data exists on the rate of migration, this circumstantial migration reflects the continued struggle of citizens to improve their living conditions. The sudden increase in the international migration of young Nigerians is a critical issue that has not received much attention from the Nigerian government, especially in tackling the root causes and ways to further reduce its negative effects on the socio-economic development of the nation. Given these concerns, this study aims to further explore the push and pull factors influencing the migration of Nigerian youths and their patterns. More importantly, it examines the socio-economic implications of an increase in the migration rate in Nigeria. The findings of the study will be useful for an in-depth reality check and will serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government.

SAMD1 suppresses epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathways in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) poses a significant threat due to its tendency to evade early detection, frequent metastasis, and the subsequent challenges in devising effective treatments. Processes that govern epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in PDAC hold promise for advancing novel therapeutic strategies. SAMD1 (SAM domain-containing protein 1) is a CpG island-binding protein that plays a pivotal role in the repression of its target genes. Here, we revealed that SAMD1 acts as a repressor of genes associated with EMT. Upon deletion of SAMD1 in PDAC cells, we observed significantly increased migration rates. SAMD1 exerts its effects by binding to specific genomic targets, including CDH2, encoding N-cadherin, which emerged as a driver of enhanced migration upon SAMD1 knockout. Furthermore, we discovered the FBXO11-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase complex as an interactor and negative regulator of SAMD1, which inhibits SAMD1 chromatin-binding genome-wide. High FBXO11 expression in PDAC is associated with poor prognosis and increased expression of EMT-related genes, underlining an antagonistic relationship between SAMD1 and FBXO11. In summary, our findings provide insights into the regulation of EMT-related genes in PDAC, shedding light on the intricate role of SAMD1 and its interplay with FBXO11 in this cancer type.

Integrated Rice–Fish Culture Alters the Bacterioplankton Community and Its Assembly Processes

The rice–fish co-culture is an important model of carp farming in China; however, research on the dynamics and assembly of water bacterial communities in this system remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the dynamics and assembly of bacterial communities, as well as their correlation with environmental factors in paddy water. For these purposes, this study was divided into two groups: a rice–carp co-culture (WRC) group and a rice monoculture (WRM) group, with 20 rice fields in each group. After 60 days of farming, the concentrations of NH4+-N, NO2−-N, TN, and PO43− were significantly higher in the WRC group than those in the WRM group. Alpha diversity analysis showed that the Shannon index in the WRC group was significantly decreased compared with the WRM group. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Actinobacteria significantly increased, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes significantly decreased in the paddy water of the WRC group. The neutral community model (NCM) indicated that a random process played a dominant role in the construction of bacterial communities in the two groups, and common carp cultivation increased migration rates, thereby affecting community assembly. The co-occurrence network displayed that common carp cultivation led to looser interactions between bacterial communities. In addition, the contents of nutrients significantly affected the abundance of bacteria in paddy water. In summary, carp cultivation decreased the diversity of bacteria and changed the relative abundance of dominant bacteria, thereby affecting the stability and assembly of bacterial communities.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Refugee Health Publications in the Nursing Field by Visual Mapping Method

Introduction Millions of people worldwide are forced to migrate to another country and nurses are the key professional for providing necessary health care to this population. Providing nursing care to refugees or immigrants requires diverse transcultural professional competencies based on standardized guidelines.ObjectivesThis study was aimed to examine the bibliographic characteristics of quantitative studies conducted on refugees in the nursing field.MethodsThe data were obtained from articles scanned in the Web of Science Core Collection database. The 1672 articles that were published between 1980-and 2023 and met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using VOSviewer and Microsoft 365 Excel software. The PRISMA 2020 Checklist was used for reporting.ResultsMost publications were made in 2020. The United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia have the highest number of publications, citations, and international cooperation. Additionally, “mental health” is one of the most used keywords in the studies.Conclusions The findings show the importance of empowering nurses working in this field, especially in determining the needs related to mental health services for refugees. The increased migration rates and the growing need for refugee health care highlighted the importance of investment in nursing research within this field. Nurses and researchers should aim to establish partnerships and share best practices with the leading countries. Furthermore, nurses require specialized training to competently evaluate and provide nursing care and mental health services to this vulnerable population. Policymakers must prioritize international collaboration, equitable healthcare, and the integration of mental health services within healthcare systems to improve refugee health and reduce barriers between them and health services.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Ethnic differences in pathways to obtain care, maintain care and engage to Early Intervention Service in Spain

IntroductionEthnicity and migration have an impact on illness models and consequently how, when and where people seek and obtain care. Early Intervention Psychosis (EIP) teams attend high rates of migrant and ethnic diverse populations but the study of ethnic differences in pathways to obtain and maintain care is still scarce . The most consistent findings are that minorities are less involved with primary services, have a higher risk of being treated in a coercive way and are at higher risk of early disengagement. Despite the increasing migration rates there has been very little investigation in Spain.ObjectivesTo investigate ethno-racial differences in pathways to obtain care, adherence and engagement during their first year of follow-up of subjects who start treatment at EIP of Reus, Catalonia, SpainMethodsParticipantsThis is an observational 12 months follow-up retrospective study including all consecutively subjects with First Episode of Psychosis (FEP) referred to the EIP from January 2015 to January 2019. Nearly 31% belonged to a minority ethno-racial group being the Maghrebi (60.4%) followed by the Latin-American (20.1%) the most frequent minority groups. The 81.2% of the minority group were first-generation migrants and 7.5% second generation migrants. The 52.2 % were referred from community services, 18.5% from emergency unit and 29.3% from inpatient unit. At follow up 64.5%, were highly adherent to EIP (> 75% of attended appointments), 16.7% required hospitalization and 11% disengaged. Multivariate analysis showed that the minority group was 2.19 times more likely to be low adherent [(95% CI 0.78-3.17; p=0.03], 2.89 times more likely to be hospitalised [(95% CI 1.20-6.98); p=0.01], and 4 times more likely to disengage from the EIP [(95% CI 1.35-11.90); p= 0.01] during follow-up than the majority group. No group differences were found in pathways to obtain care or in causes of disengagement.ConclusionsIn agreement with previous studies from other countries we found high rates of ethno-racial diversity in the EIP of Reus. In addition, we also found inequalities in the use of services, being minorities more likely to disengage, to be low adherent to the program and at greater risk of hospitalization. Investigation of the functional impact of CHED- and FECD4-associated SLC4A11 mutations in human corneal endothelial cells.

Mutations in the solute linked carrier family 4 member 11 (SLC4A11) gene are associated with congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (CHED) and Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy type 4 (FECD4), both characterized by corneal endothelial cell (CEnC) dysfunction and/or cell loss leading to corneal edema and visual impairment. In this study, we characterize the impact of CHED-/FECD4-associated SLC4A11 mutations on CEnC function and SLC4A11 protein localization by generating and comparing human CEnC (hCEnC) lines expressing wild type SLC4A11 (SLC4A11WT) or mutant SLC4A11 harboring CHED-/FECD4-associated SLC4A11 mutations (SLC4A11MU). SLC4A11WT and SLC4A11MU hCEnC lines were generated to express either SLC4A11 variant 2 (V2WT and V2MU) or variant 3 (V3WT and V3MU), the two major variants expressed in ex vivo hCEnC. Functional assays were performed to assess cell barrier, proliferation, viability, migration, and NH3-induced membrane conductance. We demonstrate SLC4A11-/- and SLC4A11MU hCEnC lines exhibited increased migration rates, altered proliferation and decreased cell viability compared to SLC4A11WT hCEnC. Additionally, SLC4A11-/- hCEnC demonstrated decreased cell-substrate adhesion and membrane capacitances compared to SLC4A11WT hCEnC. Induction with 10mM NH4Cl led SLC4A11WT hCEnC to depolarize; conversely, SLC4A11-/- hCEnC hyperpolarized and the majority of SLC4A11MU hCEnC either hyperpolarized or had minimal membrane potential changes following NH4Cl induction. Immunostaining of primary hCEnC and SLC4A11WT hCEnC lines for SLC4A11 demonstrated predominately plasma membrane staining with poor or partial colocalization with mitochondrial marker COX4 within a subset of punctate subcellular structures. Overall, our findings suggest CHED-associated SLC4A11 mutations likely lead to hCEnC dysfunction, and ultimately CHED, by interfering with cell migration, proliferation, viability, membrane conductance, barrier function, and/or cell surface localization of the SLC4A11 protein in hCEnC. Additionally, based on their similar subcellular localization and exhibiting similar cell functional profiles, protein isoforms encoded by SLC4A11 variant 2 and variant 3 likely have highly overlapping functional roles in hCEnC.

Human corneal epithelial cell and fibroblast migration and growth factor secretion after rose bengal photodynamic therapy (RB-PDT) and the effect of conditioned medium.

To investigate human corneal epithelial cell and fibroblast migration and growth factor secretion after rose bengal photodynamic therapy (RB-PDT) and the effect of conditioned medium (CM). A human corneal epithelial cell line (HCE-T), human corneal fibroblasts (HCF) and keratoconus fibroblasts (KC-HCF) have been used. Twenty-four hours after RB-PDT (0.001% RB concentration, 565 nm wavelength illumination, 0.17 J/cm2 fluence) cell migration rate using scratch assay and growth factor concentrations in the cell culture supernatant using ELISA have been determined. In addition, the effect of CM has been observed. RB-PDT significantly reduced migration rate in all cell types, compared to controls (p≤0.02). Migration rate of HCE-T cultures without RB-PDT (untreated) was significantly higher using HCF CM after RB-PDT, than using HCF CM without RB-PDT (p<0.01). Similarly, untreated HCF displayed a significantly increased migration rate with HCE-T CM after RB-PDT, compared to HCE-T CM without treatment (p<0.01). Furthermore, illumination alone and RB-PDT significantly decreased keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) concentration in HCF and KC-HCF supernatant, and RB-PDT significantly decreased soluble N-Cadherin (SN-Cad) concentration in HCF supernatant, compared to controls (p<0.01 for all). In HCE-T CM, RB-PDT increased hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (FGFb) concentration (p≤0.02), while decreasing transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) concentration (p<0.01). FGFb concentration increased (p<0.0001) and TGF-β concentration decreased (p<0.0001) in HCF CM, by RB-PDT. Epidermal growth factor (EGF), HGF, and TGF-β concentration decreased (p≤0.03) and FGFb concentration increased (p<0.01) in KC-HCF CM, using RB-PDT. HCE-T, HCF and KC-HCF migration rate is reduced 24 hours after RB-PDT. In contrast, HCE-T migration is enhanced using HCF CM after RB-PDT, and HCF migration rate is increased through HCE-T CM following RB-PDT. Modulation of EGF, KGF, HGF, FGFb, TGF-β and N-Cadherin secretion through RB-PDT may play an important role in corneal wound healing.

Sono-Magneto-Photocatalytic activity of Nd-BiFeO3/NiFe2O4 heterostructures

A series of Bi0.90Nd0.10FeO3/NiFe2O4 (Nd-BFO/NFO) nanocomposites were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method and utilized to achieve a high photocatalytic response by imposing the coupled multiple energy fields including the ultrasonic and magnetic field (MF) to the photocatalytic system. Compared to the individual energy sources, the coupled fields displayed an improved catalytic activity towards the degradation of methylene violet (MV). Markedly, the Nd-BFO/NFO nanocomposites showed almost complete degradation (98.3 %) of the pollutant by applying the 40 kHz of ultrasonic and 0.25 T of MFs simultaneously to the photocatalysis. The improved photocatalytic performance is attributed to the separation of charge carriers and their increased migration rate, which are caused by the piezoelectric effect of BFO produced by external ultrasonic and the Lorentz force by MFs respectively.

Effectiveness of fluralaner treatment regimens for the control of canine Chagas disease: A mathematical modeling study.

Canine Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by insect triatomine vectors known as kissing bugs. The agent can cause cardiac damage and long-term heart disease and death in humans, dogs, and other mammals. In laboratory settings, treatment of dogs with systemic insecticides has been shown to be highly efficacious at killing triatomines that feed on treated dogs. We developed compartmental vector-host models of T. cruzi transmission between the triatomine and dog population accounting for the impact of seasonality and triatomine migration on disease transmission dynamics. We considered a single vector-host model without seasonality, and model with seasonality, and a spatially coupled model. We used the models to evaluate the effectiveness of the insecticide fluralaner with different durations of treatment regimens for reducing T. cruzi infection in different transmission settings. In low and medium transmission settings, our model showed a marginal difference between the 3-month and 6-month regimens for reducing T. cruzi infection among dogs. The difference increases in the presence of seasonality and triatomine migration from a sylvatic transmission setting. In high transmission settings, the 3-month regimen was substantially more effective in reducing T. cruzi infections in dogs than the other regimens. Our model showed that increased migration rate reduces fluralaner effectiveness in all treatment regimens, but the relative reduction in effectiveness is minimal during the first years of treatment. However, if an additional 10% or more of triatomines killed by dog treatment were eaten by dogs, treatment could increase T. cruzi infections in the dog population at least during the first year of treatment. Our analysis shows that treating all peridomestic dogs every three to six months for at least five years could be an effective measure to reduce T. cruzi infections in dogs and triatomines in peridomestic transmission settings. However, further studies at the local scale are needed to better understand the potential impact of routine use of fluralaner treatment on increasing dogs' consumption of dead triatomines.

A Meta-Analysis of Parenting Interventions for Immigrants.

In light of increasing migration rates and the unique experiences of immigrants, this meta-analysis examined the effects of parenting interventions for immigrants. Specifically, we described the characteristics of parenting interventions for immigrants, examined cultural and/or linguistic adaptations made to the interventions, analyzed intervention effects, and examined potential moderating variables. Four electronic databases were searched in February 2021 for peer-reviewed articles published in English. Studies that involved immigrant parents, used an experimental design, and investigated an intervention targeting skills that parents could use directly with their children were included. Sixteen group design and two single-case design studies met inclusion criteria. The risk of publication bias was examined using funnel plots and found to be low. Overall, most parenting interventions for immigrants focused on young children and were delivered in groups. Interventions produced small to moderate effects on parent and child outcomes, which is comparable to those for the general population. All studies made cultural adaptations, with the most common being language. Moderator analyses indicate that the effects of interventions with surface structure adaptations were similar to those with deep structure adaptations. Limitations included the low methodological rigor of included studies and the exclusion of grey literature. More works of research on the relative effects of specific adaptations, such as ethnicity matching, are needed to better serve this population.

ADAMTS9-AS1 Long Non‑coding RNA Sponges miR‑128 and miR-150 to Regulate Ras/MAPK Signaling Pathway in Glioma.

Glioma is a malignancy of the central nervous system with a poor prognosis. Therefore, the elaboration of its molecular features creates therapeutic opportunities. Looking for the regulatory non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs and miRNAs) that are involved in glioma incidence/progression, RNA-seq analysis introduced upregulated ADAMTS9-AS1 as a bona fide candidate that sponges miR-128 and miR-150 and shows the negative correlation of expression with them. Then, RT-qPCR verified the upregulation of ADAMTS9-AS1 in glioma tissues and cell lines. Furthermore, dual-luciferase assay supported that cytoplasmic ADAMTS9-AS1 is capable of sponging miR-128 and miR-150, which are known as regulators of Ras/MAPK, PI3K, and Wnt pathways. Following the overexpression of ADAMTS9-AS1 in 1321N1 and U87 glioma cells, tyrosine kinase receptors (IGF1R and TrkC), as well as Wnt receptors (Lrp6 and Fzd) were upregulated, detected by RT-qPCR. Furthermore, downstream genes of both Ras/MAPK and Wnt pathways were upregulated. Finally following the ADAMTS9-AS1 overexpression, upregulation of Ras/MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways was verified through western blotting and Top/Fop flash assay, respectively. At the cellular level, ADAMTS9-AS1 overexpression brought about reduced sub-G1 cell population, increased proliferation rate, reduced apoptosis level, increased migration rate, shortened Bax/Bcl2 ratio, induced EMT, and stemness characteristics of transfected cells, detected by flow cytometry, MTT assay, scratch test, and RT-qPCR. Overall, these results introduced ADAMTS9-AS1 as an oncogene that upregulates Ras/MAPK and Wnt pathways through sponging of the miR-128 and miR-150 in glioma cells. The outcome of ADAMTS9-AS1 expression is more aggression of the glioma cells through increased EMT and stemness characteristics. These features candidate ADAMTS9-AS1 locus for glioma therapy. As a result, we discovered the oncogenic properties of ADAMTS9-AS1 in glioma cancer. It sponges miR-128 and miR-150 and subsequently overstimulates RAS/MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways, particularly at the receptors level. Ozone at low concentration modulates microglial activity in vitro: A multimodal microscopy and biomolecular study.

Oxygen-ozone (O2 -O3 ) therapy is an adjuvant/complementary treatment based on the activation of antioxidant and cytoprotective pathways driven by the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Many drugs, including dimethyl fumarate (DMF), that are used to reduce inflammation in oxidative-stress-related neurodegenerative diseases, act through the Nrf2-pathway. The scope of the present investigation was to get a deeper insight into the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial result of O2 -O3 treatment in some neurodegenerative diseases. To do this, we used an integrated approach of multimodal microscopy (bright-field and fluorescence microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy) and biomolecular techniques to investigate the effects of the low O3 concentrations currently used in clinical practice in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated microglial cells human microglial clone 3 (HMC3) and in DMF-treated LPS-activated (LPS + DMF) HMC3 cells. The results at light and electron microscopy showed that LPS-activation induced morphological modifications of HMC3 cells from elongated/branched to larger roundish shape, cytoplasmic accumulation of lipid droplets, decreased electron density of the cytoplasm and mitochondria, decreased amount of Nrf2 and increased migration rate, while biomolecular data demonstrated that Heme oxygenase 1 gene expression and the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, Interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α augmented. O3 treatment did not affect cell viability, proliferation, and morphological features of both LPS-activated and LPS + DMF cells, whereas the cell motility and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly decreased. This evidence suggests that modulation of microglia activity may contribute to the beneficial effects of the O2 -O3 therapy in patients with neurodegenerative disorders characterized by chronic inflammation. HIGHLIGHTS: Low-dose ozone (O3 ) does not damage activated microglial cells in vitro Low-dose O3 decreases cell motility and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion in activated microglial cells in vitro Low-dose O3 potentiates the effect of an anti-inflammatory drug on activated microglial cells.

Allochthonous subsidies drive early recruitment of a subtropical foundation species

Terrestrial nutrients flushed to sea via coastal runoff may provide a trophic subsidy to filter‐feeders, which might be particularly relevant in oligotrophic waters. In this study, we investigated how allochthonous subsidies might modulate the settlement dynamics of the mytilid Brachidontes solisianus, a space monopoliser in subtropical Brazilian shores. We used fatty acid trophic markers to identify the dietary subsidies to nearshore waters during wet and dry periods, and integrated them with key ecological drivers (temperature, rainfall) and physiological factors (nutritional status, size at settlement) acting on early life stages. Like other mytilids, for B. solisianus primary settlement can be followed by resuspension and reattachment (secondary settlement). A higher share of primary settlers may signal localized recruitment, while a larger contribution of secondary settlers would indicate increased migration rates. Through redundancy analyses we found that rainfall was correlated with 1) nearshore fatty acid trophic markers of land origin and 2) the frequency of primary settlers during the wet period, when the share of terrestrial inputs was also highest (13% of nearshore suspended matter). Conditions appeared favorable to localized recruitment through trophic settlement triggers, as settlement pulses of pelagic drifters followed heavy rains. Further, lipid analyses of pediveligers revealed that during the dry period these competent larvae selectively incorporated the essential 22:6ω3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) into membrane phospholipids at the expense of reserve lipids, suggesting a dietary deficit. Secondary dispersal also prevailed, indicating that the chance for relocation through secondary migrations during dry periods is likely higher. Overall, our results suggest that coastal runoff leads to allochthonous trophic subsidies in the form of organic‐rich plumes which may strongly modulate the settlement rate and dispersal potential of B. solisianus. Subsidies from land to coastal waters may thus be critical for the stability of benthic communities in regions of low marine primary production.

LINC02381-ceRNA exerts its oncogenic effect through regulation of IGF1R signaling pathway in glioma

LncRNAs play essential roles in the cellular and molecular biology of glioma. Some LncRNAs exert their role through sponging miRNAs and regulating multiple signaling pathways. LINC02381 is involved in several cancer types as either oncogene or tumor suppressor. Here, we intended to find the molecular mechanisms of the LINC02381 effect during the glioma progression in related cell lines. RNA-seq data analysis indicated the oncogenic characteristics of LINC02381, and RT-qPCR results confirmed its upregulation compared to normaltissues. Besides its expression was relatively stronger in invasive glioma cell lines. Furthermore, in silico analysis revealed LINC02381 is concentrated in the cytoplasm and predicted its sponging effect against miR-128 and miR-150, which was verified through dual luciferase assay. When LINC02381 was overexpressed in 1321N1, U87, and A172 cell lines, IGF1R and TrkC receptors as well as their downstream pathways (PI3K and RAS/MAPK), were upregulated, detected by RT-qPCR, and verified by western analysis. Consistently, LINC02381 overexpression was followed by an increased proliferation rate of transfected glioma cell lines, detected by flow cytometry and MTT assay, and RT-qPCR. It also resulted in elevated EMT and stemness markers expression level, increased migration rate, and reduced apoptosis rate, detected by RT-qPCR, western analysis, scratch test, and Annexin/PI flow cytometry analysis, respectively. The overall results indicated that LINC02381 exerts its oncogenic effect in glioma cells through sponging miR-128 and miR-150 to upregulate the IGF1R signaling pathway. Our results introduce LINC02381 and miR-128, and miR-150 as potential prognosis and therapy targets for the treatment of glioma.

Understanding the Influence of Ghanaian Women’s Migration Patterns on Access to Health Care

Increased migration rates demonstrate a rise in women seeking relocation as a means to access employment or academic opportunities; this is referred to as the feminization of migration. Migration stimulates female empowerment, increases access to financial opportunities, and promotes cultural diversity, all while simultaneously exposing women to detrimental conditions that impose risks to their physical and psychological well-being. Health is a fundamental human right that female migrants often are deprived of due to various social, cultural, political, and economic factors. A secondary analysis design was implemented to explore the impact of social determinants of health, specifically socioeconomic status, culture, and education, on health outcomes and health care access of Ghanaian internal and external female migrants. Interviews collected from two primary studies were analyzed using thematic analysis and an intersectionality approach. Ghanaian female migrants experienced cultural, financial, social, and health accessibility related barriers in accessing health care services. Our findings will serve as a foundation for improving health outcomes for female migrant populations and support health care professionals’ practice of cultural competence.

Patient preferences for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in Australia:a discrete choice experiment.

Australia has a high proportion of migrants, with an increasing migration rate from India. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition common amongst the Indian population. The decision to initiate and continue medication therapy (conventional or ayurvedic medicine) is complex and is influenced by a wide range of factors. To determine preferences for conventional vs. ayurvedic medicines in Indian migrants with diabetes, and to identify the factors that may influence their preferences. A discrete choice experiment was conducted with participants in Australia who were migrants from India with type 2 diabetes (n=141). Each respondent evaluated eight choice tasks consisting of eight attributes describing medicines and outcomes of medication taking; and were asked to choose 'conventional', or 'ayurvedic' medicine. A mixed multinomial logit model was used to estimate preferences. Overall, respondents' preference to initiate a medicine was negative for both conventional (β=-2.33164, p<0.001) and ayurvedic medicines (β=-3.12181, p<0.001); however, significant heterogenicity was noted in participants' preferences (SD: 2.33122, p<0.001). Six significant attributes were identified to influence preferences. In decreasing rank order: occurrence of hypoglycaemic events (relative importance, RI=24.33%), weight change (RI=20.00%), effectiveness of medicine (RI=17.91%), instructions to take with food (RI=17.05%), side effects (RI=13.20%) and formulation (RI=7.49%). Respondents preferred to initiate a medicine despite potential side effects. There was a greater preference for conventional medicine, though neither were preferred. Medicine attributes and medication-taking outcomes influenced people's preferences for an antidiabetic medicine. It is important to identify individual preferences during healthcare consultations to ensure optimal medication-taking.

The Role of Religion, Spirituality and Fasting in Coping with Diabetes among Indian Migrants in Australia: A Qualitative Exploratory Study.

Australia has a high proportion of migrants, with an increasing migration rate from India. While many factors influence diabetes self-management among Indian migrants, very little is known about the influence of religious beliefs and spirituality. This study explored the religious beliefs of Indian migrants in Australia and the influence of those beliefs on their diabetes self-management. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 23 Indian migrants. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Most participants believed that prayers helped them alleviate stress and improve diabetes management participants also believed that receiving blessings/prayers from religious leaders prevent or cure diseases including diabetes. There were mixed views on beliefs about using insulin obtained from animal sources. Some participants were concerned about the use of animal-based insulin as it was against their religious beliefs and teachings. Some participants believed that religious fasting does not have any impact on their diabetes while others believed that it can be detrimental to their health. Religious beliefs therefore played an important role in how Indian migrants managed their diabetes. Healthcare professionals should consider their patients' religious beliefs during consultations, enlist support, such as religious scholars, to better address people's misconceptions, and identify strategies for effective diabetes management that consider religious beliefs.

The impact of multiple-component PFAS solutions on fluid-fluid interfacial adsorption and transport of PFOS in unsaturated porous media

The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of multiple-component PFAS solutions on the retention of PFOS during transport in unsaturated porous media. Surface tensions were measured to characterize the impact of co-PFAS on the surface activity of PFOS. Miscible-displacement experiments were conducted to examine the air-water interfacial adsorption of PFOS during transport in single and multi-PFAS systems. Literature data for transport of PFOS in NAPL-water systems were also investigated for comparison. A mathematical model incorporating surfactant-induced flow, nonlinear rate-limited sorption, nonlinear rate-limited fluid-fluid interfacial adsorption, and competitive adsorption at the fluid-fluid interface was used to simulate the transport of PFOS. The results indicate that the presence of co-PFAS had no measurable impact on solid-phase sorption of PFOS during transport under the extant conditions of the experiments. Conversely, the air-water interfacial adsorption of PFOS was decreased by the presence of co-PFAS during transport under unsaturated-flow conditions for relatively high input concentrations. The multiple-component Langmuir model could not predict the competitive adsorption behavior observed during transport. Conversely, competitive interactions were not observed for transport with a lower input concentration. The results indicate that the retention and transport of individual PFAS in mixtures may in some cases be impacted by the presence of co-PFAS due to competitive fluid-fluid interfacial adsorption effects. Reduced retention due to competitive interfacial-adsorption interactions has the potential to decrease PFOS retardation during transport, thereby increasing migration rates in sources zones and enhancing groundwater-pollution risks. A Qualitative Study on Medication Taking Behaviour Among People With Diabetes in Australia.

Background: Australia has a high proportion of migrants with an increasing migration rate from India. Type II diabetes is a long-term condition common amongst the Indian population.Aims: To investigate patients’ medication-taking behaviour and factors that influence adherence at the three phases of adherence.Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 23 Indian migrants living in Sydney. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed.Results: 1) Initiation: The majority of participants were initially prescribed oral antidiabetic medicine and only two were started on insulin. Most started taking their medicine immediately while some delayed initiating therapy due to fear of side-effects. 2) Implementation: Most participants reported taking their medicine as prescribed. However, some reported forgetting their medicine especially when they were in a hurry for work or were out for social events. 3) Discontinuation: A few participants discontinued taking their medicine. Those who discontinued did so to try Ayurvedic medicine. Their trial continued for a few weeks to a few years. Those who did not receive expected results from the Ayurvedic medicine restarted their prescribed conventional medicine.Conclusion: A range of medication-taking behaviours were observed, ranging from delays in initiation to long-term discontinuation, and swapping of prescribed medicine with Ayurvedic medicine. This study highlights the need for tailored interventions, including education, that focus on factors that impact medication adherence from initiation to discontinuation of therapy.
