An Improved Gross Primary Production Model Considering Atmospheric CO2 Fertilization: The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau as a Case Study

Involving the effect of atmospheric CO2 fertilization is effective for improving the accuracy of estimating gross primary production (GPP) using light use efficiency (LUE) models. However, the widely used LUE model, the remote sensing-driven Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) model, scarcely considers the effects of atmospheric CO2 fertilization, which causes GPP estimation uncertainties. Therefore, this study proposed an improved method for estimating GPP by integrating the atmospheric CO2 concentration into the CASA model and generated a long time series GPP dataset with high precision for the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The CASA model was improved by considering the impact of atmospheric CO2 on vegetation productivity and discerning variations in CO2 gradients within the canopy and leaves. A 500 m monthly GPP dataset for the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau from 2003 to 2020 was generated. The results showed that the improved GPP estimation model achieved better performances on estimating GPP (R2 = 0.68, RMSE = 406 g C/m2/year) than the original model (R2 = 0.67, RMSE = 499.32 g C/m2/year) and MODIS GPP products (R2 = 0.49, RMSE = 522.56 g C/m2/year). The GPP on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau increased significantly with the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and the gradual accumulation of dry matter. The improved method can also be used for other regions and the generated GPP dataset is valuable for further understanding the ecosystem carbon cycles on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.

Accounting of carbon sequestration and tradeoff under various climatic scenarios in alternative agricultural system: a comprehensive framework toward carbon neutrality

IntroductionThe increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, which mainly is attributed to fossil-fuel combustion and deforestation, is often suggested as one of the prime causative factors toward accelerated global warming. This commends for sequestration of atmospheric carbon under terrestrial systems to partially offset fossil-fuel emissions. Concerning the same, agricultural sector presents an extensive opportunity, especially for countries such as India where over 55% of the population is engaged in the agriculture sector.MethodsSequestering atmospheric carbon in agriculture requires the adoption of climate-resilient alternative agriculture practices without compromising food security. The deliberated study highlights the options of alteration in current conventional farming practices and its economic evaluation for sequestrating carbon under two Climate Change (CC) scenarios, viz., RCP 4.5 and 8.5, over three temporal scales, i.e., 2020, 2030, and 2050. Considering the current land-use pattern and existing growth rate in land-use shifting, three land-use policies, namely, Business as Usual (BaU), Optimistic, and Pessimistic scenario, integrated with CC scenarios were contemplated. Six possible futuristic scenarios were generated for the assessment of carbon sequestration and its valuation following the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoff (InVEST) model.ResultsThe results suggested that across the studied region adopting an optimistic policy over BaU and pessimistic scenario, carbon can sequestrate an additional 0.64 to 1.46 Mt. (2.35 to 5.36 million ton CO2e) having an economic value of 193.4 to 504.8 million USD.ResultsMoreover, the outcomes of the study are advocated for the policy of carbon credit in the agriculture sector, which shall contribute toward meeting various nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and sustainable development goals (SDGs) as well.

Terrestrial Ecosystem Model in R (TEMIR) version 1.0: simulating ecophysiological responses of vegetation to atmospheric chemical and meteorological changes

Abstract. The newly developed offline land ecosystem model Terrestrial Ecosystem Model in R (TEMIR) version 1.0 is described here. This version of the model simulates plant ecophysiological (e.g., photosynthetic and stomatal) responses to varying meteorological conditions and concentrations of CO2 and ground-level ozone (O3) based on prescribed meteorological and atmospheric chemical inputs from various sources. Driven by the same meteorological data used in the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model, this allows asynchronously coupled experiments with GEOS-Chem simulations with unique coherency for investigating biosphere–atmosphere chemical interactions. TEMIR agrees well with FLUXNET site-level gross primary productivity (GPP) in terms of both the diurnal and monthly cycles (correlation coefficients R2>0.85 and R2>0.8, respectively) for most plant functional types (PFTs). Grass and shrub PFTs have larger biases due to generic model representations. The model performs best when driven by local site-level meteorology rather than reanalyzed gridded meteorology. Simulation using gridded meteorology agrees well for annual GPP in seasonality and spatial distribution with a global average of 134 Pg C yr−1. Application of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory to infer canopy conditions from gridded meteorology does not improve model performance, predicting an increase of +7 % in global GPP. Present-day O3 concentrations simulated by GEOS-Chem and an O3 damage scheme at high sensitivity show a 2 % reduction in global GPP with prominent reductions of up to 15 % in eastern China and the eastern USA. Regional correlations are generally unchanged when O3 is present and biases are reduced, especially for regions with high O3 damage. An increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration of 20 ppmv from the level in 2000 to the level in 2010 modestly decreases O3 damage due to reduced stomatal uptake, consistent with ecophysiological understanding. Our work showcases the utility of this version of TEMIR for evaluating biogeophysical responses of vegetation to changes in atmospheric composition and meteorological conditions.

Assessing watershed-scale impacts of best management practices and elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations on water yield

Changes in water yield are influenced by many intersecting biophysical elements, including climate, on-land best management practices, and landcover. Large-scale reductions in water yield may present a significant threat to water supplies globally. Many of these intersecting factors are intercorrelated and confounded, making it challenging to separate the factors' individual contributions to shaping local streamflow dynamics. Comprehensive hydrological models constructed based on a well-established understanding of biophysical processes are often employed to address these matters. However, these models rarely incorporate all relevant factors influencing local hydrological processes, due to the reliance of these models on the latest, albeit limited, state-of-the-art research. For instance, complexities inherent in watershed hydrology, which involve multilayered interactions among potentially many biophysical factors, leave the direct analysis of subtle impacts on water yields measured in-situ largely intractable. Therefore, we propose an innovative approach to assess impacts of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and flow diversion terraces (FDTs) on stream discharge rates at the watershed scale. Initially, we use a comprehensive hydrological model to account for the impacts of major climatic and landuse/landcover factors on changes in field-acquired measurements of water yield. Next, we employ conventional and advanced statistical methods to decompose the residuals of model predictions to facilitate the identification of subtle influences promoted by increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and the application of FDTs in an agriculture-dominated watershed. Through this innovative approach, we find that FDTs contributed to a watershed-wide, net water-yield reduction of 188.0 mm (or 28.9 %) from 1992 to 2014. Ongoing increases in ambient CO2 concentrations, which are responsible for an overall reduction in a watershed-level assessment of stomatal conductance, have led to a minor increase in stream discharge rates during the same 23-year period, i.e., 0.45 mm of water yield per year, or 1.6 % overall. Streamflow reductions explicitly caused by regional warming in the area alone, on account of increased evapotranspiration, may be overestimated due to the opposing, synergistic effects on water yield associated with CO2-enrichment of the lower atmosphere and the annual application of FDTs.

Evaluating the performance of carbon-based adsorbents fabricated from renewable biomass precursors for post-combustion CO2 capture

The significant increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration originated mainly from fossil fuels combustion has encouraged the development and improvement of CO2 separation operations to reduce emissions and control climate change and global warming. Therefore, this work is focused on the separation of CO2 from N2 in flue gas streams under post-combustion conditions by developing low-cost adsorbents. Six carbons were fabricated from biomass resources (olive stones and almond shells) to assess their influence on CO2 adsorption capacity: One carbonized and two KOH-activated carbons with carbon/KOH ratio of 1:2 and 1:4 (w/w) for each precursor. The carbons were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis, nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption–desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and point of zero charge determination. In addition, the equilibrium adsorption data of pure components for all adsorbents were measured at 0, 25 and 50 °C between 0 and 760 mmHg and CO2/N2 selectivity was determined. Activated carbons were found to have higher CO2 adsorption capacity but with a reduction in apparent selectivity. Dynamic binary adsorption simulations performed in a fixed-bed column demonstrated that the activated carbon produced from olive stones with a carbon/KOH ratio of 1:4 (w/w) can separate a mixture of 14 % CO2 and 86 % N2 at 25 and 50 °C with the highest selectivity, CO2 adsorption capacity, CO2 purity and N2 recovery factor. Reducing flow rate, the breakthrough time increased. Moreover, the breakthrough time was reduced by increasing the temperature from 25 to 50 °C owing to the exothermic nature of adsorption process.

Diverse projected climate change scenarios affect the physiology of broccoli plants to different extents.

Climate change caused by global warming involves crucial plant growth factors such as atmospheric CO2 concentration, ambient temperature or water availability. These stressors usually co-occur, causing intricate alterations in plant physiology and development. This work focuses on how elevated atmospheric CO2 levels, together with the concomitant high temperature, would affect the physiology of a relevant crop, such as broccoli. Particular attention has been paid to those defence mechanisms that contribute to plant fitness under abiotic stress. Results show that both photosynthesis and leaf transpiration were reduced in plants grown under climate change environments compared to those grown under current climate conditions. Furthermore, an induction of carbohydrate catabolism pointed to a redistribution from primary to secondary metabolism. This result could be related to a reinforcement of cell walls, as well as to an increase in the pool of antioxidants in the leaves. Broccoli plants, a C3 crop, grown under an intermediate condition showed activation of those adaptive mechanisms, which would contribute to coping with abiotic stress, as confirmed by reduced levels of lipid peroxidation relative to current climate conditions. On the contrary, the most severe climate change scenario exceeded the adaptive capacity of broccoli plants, as shown by the inhibition of growth and reduced vigour of plants. In conclusion, only a moderate increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature would not have a negative impact on broccoli crop yields.

Diurnal, Seasonal, and Vertical Changes in Photosynthetic Rates in Cinamomum camphora Forests in Subtropical China

The increase in the global atmospheric CO2 concentration is expected to increase the productivity of forests, but the dynamic processes of such increased productivity in the forest canopy remain unclear. In this study, diurnal and seasonal variations and vertical changes in photosynthetic rates were investigated in Camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) forests in subtropical China. The effect of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and CO2 concentrations on photosynthetic rates were also examined in the studied forests. Results showed the diurnal patterns of photosynthesis exhibited two peaks on sunny days, but only one peak on cloudy days. The daily average photosynthetic rate on cloudy days was approximately 74% of that on sunny days. The photosynthetic rate decreased along the vertical forest canopy profile. If the photosynthetic rate in the upper canopy layer was 100%, the corresponding rates were 83% and 25% in the middle and lower canopy layers, respectively. The rates of dark respiration derived from the PAR response curve were 1.73, 1.25, and 1.0 µmol m−2 s−1 for the upper, middle, and lower canopy layers, respectively. The apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis was 0.0183, 0.0186, and 0.0327 µmol CO2 µmol−1 PAR for the upper, middle, and lower canopy, respectively. The initial slope of the photosynthetic response curve to CO2 was highest in the upper canopy and lowest in the lower canopy. The seasonal variation in photosynthetic rates exhibited a two-peaked pattern at all canopy positions, with the two peaks occurring in June and September. The stand biomass and biomass carbon storage were 144.7 t ha−1 and 71.6 t C ha−1 in the examined forests, respectively. The study provides a scientific reference for future research on accessing carbon sequestration and designing forest management practices, specifically in regulating canopy structure in subtropical regions.

Research Progress of Non-Noble Metal Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Methanation.

The extensive utilization of fossil fuels has led to a rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, resulting in various environmental issues. To reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate CO2 emissions, it is important to explore alternative methods of utilizing CO2 and H2 as raw materials to obtain high-value-added chemicals or fuels. One such method is CO2 methanation, which converts CO2 and H2 into methane (CH4), a valuable fuel and raw material for other chemicals. However, CO2 methanation faces challenges in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics. The reaction rate, CO2 conversion, and CH4 yield need to be improved to make the process more efficient. To overcome these challenges, the development of suitable catalysts is essential. Non-noble metal catalysts have gained significant attention due to their high catalytic activity and relatively low cost. In this paper, the thermodynamics and kinetics of the CO2 methanation reaction are discussed. The focus is primarily on reviewing Ni-based, Co-based, and other commonly used catalysts such as Fe-based. The effects of catalyst supports, preparation methods, and promoters on the catalytic performance of the methanation reaction are highlighted. Additionally, the paper summarizes the impact of reaction conditions such as temperature, pressure, space velocity, and H2/CO2 ratio on the catalyst performance. The mechanism of CO2 methanation is also summarized to provide a comprehensive understanding of the process. The objective of this paper is to deepen the understanding of non-noble metal catalysts in CO2 methanation reactions and provide insights for improving catalyst performance. By addressing the limitations of CO2 methanation and exploring the factors influencing catalyst effectiveness, researchers can develop more efficient and cost-effective catalysts for this reaction.

Learning to balance wheat G × E × M interactions in response to a changing climate—The case for ultra‐early planting systems

AbstractReported global reductions in cereal grain yields due to increased global average temperature combined with increasing global populations peaking near 2050 create an immediate need to increase cereal grain yield potential and reduce the yield gap between realized on‐farm grain yield and potential yield. The development of an ultra‐early planting system for spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on the northern Great Plains can increase the resiliency of current growing systems to a changing climate. This was achieved through the development of a unique set of practices designed to successfully shift current wheat production systems to ultra‐early growing systems. Ultra‐early‐planted wheat‐growing systems on the northern Great Plains will provide immediate benefits to the adopting producer in the form of increased grain yield and increased grain yield stability relative to current practices. As global average temperatures warm, and atmospheric CO2 concentrations increase, the northern Great Plains region is in a unique position to potentially realize grain yield increases rather than temperature‐driven grain yield decreases. Shifting planting earlier and taking advantage of increased growing degree day accumulation and water use efficiencies while avoiding higher temperatures during sensitive physiological periods are tactics implemented in ultra‐early growing systems that will increase in importance and relevance in the next three decades as average daily temperatures increase.

Forward-Bias 3D-Junction Bipolar Membranes for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to CO

The ongoing, rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration has led to a growing interest in the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to value-added products like CO. To attain high current densities, the latter reaction is often performed using an anion exchange membrane(AEM) electrolyte that is well known to operate through the transport of (bi)carbonate ions from cathode to anode. This can in turn result in a CO2 pumping effect that decreases the device’s net CO2-consumption, and that can be prevented by using a bipolar membrane in a so-called forward-bias configuration (i.e., with the anion vs. cation exchange layers (AEL, CEL) contacting the cathode vs. anode electrodes, respectively). However, the recombination of protons and (bi)carbonate and concomitant production of H2O and CO2 at the AEL-CEL interface in this operative mode can also lead to the delamination of the membrane and cell failure.In order to prevent such a delamination, this study proposes the introduction of a three-dimensional (3D) AEL-CEL junction, utilizing Nafion® as the cation exchange layer and PiperION as the anion exchange one. Two different methods were applied to fabricate the 3D junction bipolar membrane. The first method involves the fabrication of a 3D interlocking layer using polystyrene (PS) beads that are sprayed (along with Nafion ionomer) onto a Nafion membrane, and removed using toluene. This results in an inverse-opal structure atop the Nafion membrane whose pores can be filled with anion exchange ionomer (AEI). Complementarily, the second method involves the introduction of a layer, consisting of a mixture of AEI and cation exchange ionomer (CEI) between the AEM and CEM. Additionally, a non-conductive oxide material is added to this ionomer layer to increase the contact area of AEI and CEI. Finally, the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance and durability of the resulting, 3D junction bipolar membranes are evaluated and compared to those of an equivalent, 2D junction bipolar membrane, in all cases in a forward bias configuration.

Self-Assembled Core-Shell Structure MgO@TiO2 as a K2CO3 Support with Superior Performance for Direct Air Capture CO2.

Traditional carbon capture and storage technologies for large point sources can at best slow the rate of increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. In contrast, direct capture of CO2 from ambient air, or "direct air capture" (DAC), offers the potential to become a truly carbon-negative technology. Composite solid adsorbents fabricated by impregnating a porous matrix with K2CO3 are promising adsorbents for the adsorption capture of CO2 from ambient air. Nevertheless, the adsorbent can be rapidly deactivated during continuous adsorption/desorption cycles. In this study, MgO-supported, TiO2-stabilized MgO@TiO2 core-shell structures were prepared as supports using a novel self-assembled (SA) method and then impregnated with 50 wt % K2CO3 (K2CO3/MgO@TiO2, denoted as SA-KM@T). The adsorbent exhibits a high CO2 capture capacity of ∼126.6 mg CO2/g sorbent in direct air adsorption and maintained a performance of 20 adsorption/desorption cycles at 300 °C mid-temperature, which was much better than that of K2CO3/MgO. Analysis proved that the core-shell structure of the support effectively inhibited the reaction between the active component (K2CO3) and the main support (MgO) by the addition of TiO2, resulting in higher reactivity, thermal stability, and antiagglomeration properties. This work provides an alternative strategy for DAC applications using adsorbents.

Herbicides weed management in changing environmental conditions

Elevate CO2 levels in the atmosphere might have prominent effects on weed phenology, consequently changing herbicide performance on weeds. Increased atmospheric CO2 concentration increase leaf thickness and reduce stomatal number and conductance potentially reducing the absorption of POST–emergence applied herbicides. From the other side, higher temperature stimulates stomata conductance, reduce the viscosity of epicuticle waxes, thus increasing the penetration and diffusion of herbicides as a result of changes in the composition and the permeability of the cuticle. However, in some circumstances higher temperatures might cause hastened metabolism, which consequently decreases herbicide activity on target plants. In conditions of higher RH, cuticle hydration and stomatal conductance increases, consequently increases the permeability and translocation particularly of hydrophilic herbicides into the leaves. Similar, under higher irradiance, stomata stay open, photosynthetic rate increases consequently increasing absorption, penetration and subsequent phloem translocation of POST–em systemic herbicides in weed tissue. Drought might cause increased cuticle thickness and increased leaf pubescence, with consequent reductions in herbicide absorption into the leaves. Rainfall after POST–emergence herbicides application might reduce their efficiency through washing out. Increased frequency and intensity of precipitation will have a negative effect on absorption, translocation, and activity of PRE–emergence herbicides.

Research progress on biomass ash carbon capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and to achieve the dual carbon target. Carbon capture and storage through biomass ash is a secure, permanent, and environment friendly way. To better understand the characteristics of biomass ash carbon capture and storage, we summarized progresses on biomass ash carbon capture and storage, clarified the mechanisms of biomass ash carbon sequestration, analyzed the influencing factors, and explored its applications in various domains. The capacity of CCS by biomass ash mainly derived from alkaline earth metal oxides of CaO and MgO. The actual carbon sequestration efficiency is affected by factors such as biomass source, chemical composition, temperature, humidity, pressure, and CO2 concentration. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear. The CCS capacity of biomass ash significantly impacts its potential applications in building materials reuse, soil quality improvement, and adsorbents carbon capture and storage absorbent preparation. Long-term research is critically needed. For future studies, we should strengthen the research on the carbonization efficiency of biomass ash from multiple sources, establish a database related to the impact of biomass ash carbonization, build a methodological system to promote scientific management of biomass ash, develop biomass ash carbon capture and storage technologies, and quantitatively assess its role in carbon sequestration.

Future changes in crop yield over Poland driven by climate change, increasing atmospheric CO2 and nitrogen stress

CONTEXTCrop production is strongly affected by climate-related factors that are predicted to become more severe in the future due to significant changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, and increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme events. Understanding potential future crop yield response to a changing climate is of great importance for food production stability and safety. OBJECTIVEThe overall objective of this study is to assess the impact of projected climate change on crop yield in Poland. METHODSThis study employed an agro-hydrological Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model forced by EURO-CORDEX downscaled and bias-corrected climate model outputs to simulate future changes in yield of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare), rapeseed (Brassica napus), maize silage (Zea mays), and potato (Solanum tuberosum) over Poland driven by climate change, an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and plant growth stress factors. We looked into two future horizons: near future (NF; 2041–2060), and far future (FF; 2081–2100) under two different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and 8.5). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSClimate projections revealed that by the end of century, Poland will experience an increase of mean precipitation (by up to 10.3%) and mean temperature (+3.4 °C) under RCP8.5. We tested two different nitrogen fertilisation scenarios under changing climatic conditions, namely auto fertilisation which adjusted the nitrogen doses according to actual plant requirements in each climatic scenario, and constant doses corresponding to current use throughout the entire simulation period. The results showed that crops in Poland will experience an increase in nitrogen stress and a decrease in water stress in the future. Temperature stress is projected to increase for spring barley, rapeseed, and potato, and decrease for thermophilic maize silage. Auto fertilisation scenario application that eliminated nitrogen stress in future horizons resulted in a significant increase in yield of all crops under consideration. The comparison of the RCP scenarios showed a higher increase for RCP8.5, reaching 13% for NF and 17% for FF as an average value for all crops. For RCP4.5, the corresponding values were 10% (NF) and 13% (FF). Nitrogen stress reported under the constant nitrogen rate scenario offseted potential yield increase in future horizons caused by elevated CO2.The multi-annual average yield of the analysed crops in future increased by <5%. SIGNIFICANCEOur study indicated that future changes in crop yield in Poland are mostly related to CO2 enhancement, and benefitting fully from that will require an adjustment of nitrogen fertiliser rates. Otherwise, a potential increase in biomass production will be restricted by nitrogen availability.

The ocean carbon pool: a vital component of the global carbon cycle

The global carbon cycle is an integral part of the Earth System. Of the land, atmosphere, and ocean components of the global carbon cycle that exchange carbon on the timescales of decades to centuries, the ocean contains more than 90% of carbon. The ocean carbon pool represents a critical component of the Earth's carbon cycle, playing a pivotal role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and influencing climate dynamics. The exponential increase of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions in the industrial era implies the ocean's uptake has increased exponentially, reaching 2.5 ± 0.6 Pg C yr-1 for 2009-2018. Without the ocean and land sinks, atmospheric CO2 levels would be close to 600 ppm. The ocean carbon pool comprises dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), organic carbon, and particulate organic matter, collectively responsible for the sequestration and release of carbon into the atmosphere. Phytoplankton, the microscopic marine plants, play a fundamental role in the oceanic carbon cycle by photosynthesizing and fixing atmospheric CO2 into organic matter. This organic matter can be transferred to the deep ocean through the biological pump, further contributing to the storage of carbon in the form of sinking particles. The bulk of the global ocean margin represents a carbon sink of ~0.1-0.2 Pg C. Oceanic processes, such as ocean circulation and upwelling, help redistribute carbon from surface waters to the deep ocean. The solubility pump, which is driven by changes in temperature and salinity, also affects the solubility of CO2 in seawater. These natural processes work to mitigate the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and help regulate global temperatures.

Carbon Capture and Storage: From Global Cycles to Global Solutions

Anthropogenic carbon emissions have overwhelmed the natural carbon cycle, leading to a dramatic increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The rate of this increase may be unprecedented in Earth’s history and is leading to a substantial increase in global temperatures, ocean acidification, sea level rise and potentially human health challenges. In this Geochemical Perspectives we review the natural carbon cycle and its link to global climate. Notably, as directly observed by field observations summarised in this volume, there is a natural negative feedback loop between increasing global temperature, continental weathering rates, and CO2 that has tended to limit Earth climate changes over geological time scales. Due to the rapid increase in atmospheric carbon concentrations, global average temperatures have increased by more than 1.2 °C since the start of the industrial revolution. One way to slow or even arrest this increasing global average temperature is through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Carbon dioxide can be captured either from large industrial point sources or directly from the atmosphere. Taking account of the natural carbon cycle, the most secure approach to storing captured CO2 is by reacting it with mafic or ultramafic rocks to form stable carbonate minerals, a process referred to as “mineral carbonation”. Although mineral carbonation can occur and be accelerated at the Earth’s surface, due to the required scale and required time frames it is most effective in the subsurface. This subsurface mineralisation approach was developed into an industrial scale process through an academic-industrial collaboration called CarbFix. The history of CarbFix, from its beginnings as a concept through its installation as an industrial process is presented in detail. This Geochemical Perspectives concludes with an assessment of the future of subsurface mineralisation as a means to help address the global warming challenge, as well as a detailed list of potential research directions that need to be addressed to further upscale and optimise this carbon storage approach.

Continental Thermal Structure and Carbonate Storage of Subducted Sedimentary Origin Control on Different Increases in Atmospheric CO2 in Late Ediacaran and Jurassic

AbstractCarbon release during continental rifting is thought to regulate atmospheric CO2 levels. Supercontinent dispersal‐induced extensional tectonics is similar during the Late Ediacaran and Jurassic, while they exhibit different increases in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The underlying mechanism of distinct CO2 emissions remains to be understood. Here, we conduct petrological‐thermomechanical modeling to show that metamorphic decarbonation and melting of carbonates that are derived from subducted sediments are ubiquitous during continental extension. We find that the hotter lithosphere and deeper storage of these carbonates cause more significant amounts of rift‐related CO2 release through volcanoes and faults. They may cause ∼12%–77% larger decarbonation efficiency, providing an efficient driving mechanism for a ∼31% larger increase in atmospheric CO2 levels during the Late Ediacaran than throughout the Jurassic. The rapid eruption and deposition of recycled carbonatite volcanic ash may contribute to the production of Late Ediacaran marine carbonates with the largest negative δ13C (−12‰).

The Effect of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentration on the Growth and Chlorophyll Fluorescence Characteristics of Hazelnut Leaves under Cadmium Stress

To understand the response of hazelnut to the increased concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) under cadmium (Cd) pollution stress, this paper used an artificial open top chamber to control the CO2 concentration (at 370 and 750 μmol·mol−1) and to study the effects of an elevated CO2 concentration on the growth and photosynthetic capacity of hazelnut leaves under different levels of Cd stress. The results showed that the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration has a tendency to alleviate the inhibition of plant growth caused by Cd. The net photosynthetic rate rose significantly, although the transpiration rate and stomatal conductance of hazelnut leaves decreased slightly with the rise in CO2 concentration. The rise in CO2 concentration had no significant effect on the activity of the photosystem Ⅱ (PSII) reaction center in hazelnut leaves. Under Cd stress conditions, the rise in CO2 concentration significantly enhanced the PSII hazelnut leaves’ photochemical activity, which promotes the PSII receptor’s electron transfer capacity side and alleviates the degree of damage to the oxygen-evolving complex and the thylakoid membrane of the PSII donor side. The number of active reaction centers per unit area of hazelnut leaves, and the proportion of energy absorbed by PSII that is used for photosynthetic electron transfer, increased under severe stress conditions, which in turn reduced the energy proportion that was used for heat dissipation, providing CO2’s effective fixation energy in the dark reaction. In conclusion, the rise in the CO2 concentration enhances hazelnut’s heavy metal resistance by improving the PSII function under Cd stress conditions.

Heat wave characterization and its impact on carbon and water vapour fluxes over sugarcane-based agroecosystem

Global climate change expected to exacerbate the temperature extremes and intensity of heat waves in recent decades. The terrestrial biosphere plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Therefore, understanding how terrestrial ecosystems respond to extreme temperatures is essential for predicting land-surface feedbacks in a changing climate. In light of this, a study was conducted to assess the effects of 2022 heat wave [March-May (MAM)] on carbon and water vapour fluxes. This study utilized the measurements obtained from the eddy covariance tower mounted within the sugarcane agroecosystem. The study period (MAM) was characterized into three events: Heat wave event 1 (HE1), Heat wave event 2 (HE2), Non heat wave event (NHE). The variation in carbon and water vapour fluxes, along with meteorological variables, during these events in 2020 and 2022 was further analysed. Our findings indicate that the heat wave caused a decrease in net ecosystem exchange (NEE), leading to an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration during HE1, HE2 compared to NHE. In HE1, maximum NEE in 2020 and 2022 was -19.15 µmol m-2 s-1 and -13.21 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively. Furthermore, the heat wave events led to a decrease in latent heat flux (LE) and sensible heat flux (H), with changes of up to 5% in LE and 57% in H compared to the same period in 2020. These results highlight the significant impact of the heatwave on both carbon and energy fluxes. Overall, the present study provides a valuable reference for further climate change analysis, specifically focusing on both carbon and energy fluxes within sugarcane ecosystem.

Enhanced clay formation key in sustaining the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum

The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (around 40 million years ago) was a roughly 400,000-year-long global warming phase associated with an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations and deep-ocean acidification that interrupted the Eocene’s long-term cooling trend. The unusually long duration, compared with early Eocene global warming phases, is puzzling as temperature-dependent silicate weathering should have provided a negative feedback, drawing down CO2 over this timescale. Here we investigate silicate weathering during this climate warming event by measuring lithium isotope ratios (reported as δ7Li), which are a tracer for silicate weathering processes, from a suite of open-ocean carbonate-rich sediments. We find a positive δ7Li excursion—the only one identified for a warming event so far —of ~3‰. Box model simulations support this signal to reflect a global shift from congruent weathering, with secondary mineral dissolution, to incongruent weathering, with secondary mineral formation. We surmise that, before the climatic optimum, there was considerable soil shielding of the continents. An increase in continental volcanism initiated the warming event, but it was sustained by an increase in clay formation, which sequestered carbonate-forming cations, short-circuiting the carbonate–silicate cycle. Clay mineral dynamics may play an important role in the carbon cycle for climatic events occurring over intermediate (i.e., 100,000 year) timeframes.
