Biological action of bleaching agents on tooth structure: A review.

The use of bleaching agents to remove stains is one of the main dental procedures to improve the aesthetics of teeth. This review presents the main agents used for tooth whitening, existing clinical protocols, and the structural changes that may occur through their use. The main bleaching agents consist of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide, which are used in bleaching techniques for vital teeth. These techniques can be performed in the office by a professional or by the individual in a home en-vironment under professional guidance. Bleaching agents come in a variety of concentrations and there are over-the-counter products available on the market with lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Due to the chemical characteristics of the agents, changes in the organic and inorganic content of the tooth structure can be observed. These changes are related to morphological changes characterized by in-creased permeability and surface roughness, such changes compromise the mechanical resistance of the tooth. Furthermore, bleaching agents can promote molecular changes after reaching the dental pulp, resulting in oxidative stress of pulp cells and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators. Despite the bleaching effectiveness, tooth sensitivity is considered the main side effect of use. Therefore, among the heterogeneity of protocols, those that used the bleaching agent for a prolonged time and in lower con-centrations presented more harmful effects on the tooth structure.

Evaluation of Enamel Surface Properties Submitted to Bleaching With 35% Hydrogen Peroxide Associated With Titanium Tetrafluoride (TiF4).

This study evaluated the color change, surface roughness, mineral content and morphology of enamel bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) combined with an experimental gel containing 1% titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4). Bovine enamel blocks were treated with (n = 12): (TiF) experimental gel containing 1% TiF4, (HP) 35% HP, (HPT) 35% HP + 1% TiF4and (CT) control. Bleaching with HP was performed in 3 sessions (3 × 15 min/applications). pH, colorimetric parameters, surface roughness, mineral content and enamel morphology were determined. The pH was evaluated for 45 min. The color parameters were determined before bleaching (T0), and 14 days elapsed from the last bleaching session (T4). Surface roughness was analyzed at T0 and immediately after last bleaching session (T3). Enamel mineral content and morphology were verified at T4. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way, two-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis (α = 0.05). TiF increased surface roughness, and no differences between HP and HPT in terms of color and - mineral content. Ti was detected only on TiF, and slight surface morphology changes were observed in bleached enamel. The combination of TiF4 and 35% HP did not interfere with the enamel bleaching effect, controlled surface roughness, and kept mineral content but promoted a minor surface morphology alteration. Due to the adverse effects of bleaching, titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) has gained attention for its therapeutic properties, including the ability to reverse mineral loss and neutralize remineralization of mineral structures. Therefore, TiF4's remineralizing capacitymay be a good alternative for incorporation into hydrogen peroxide bleaching agents.

Integrating Multiple Strategies Using Biotechnology to Design High‐Performance Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution

AbstractCombining multiple design strategies often enhances catalyst performance but usually comes with high costs and low reproducibility. A technique that enhances catalyst performance in multiple strategies is urgently needed. Herein, a novel bioregulation technique is introduced, allowing simultaneous control over morphology, particle size, doping, interface engineering, and electronic properties. Bioregulation technique utilizes the soluble extracellular polymer from Aspergillus niger as a templating agent to construct high‐performance catalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER). This technique controls catalyst morphology, introduces biological N and S doping, and regulates the electronic structure of the catalyst surface. Biomolecule modification enhances surface hydrophilicity, and the nanostructure increases surface roughness and gas‐release efficiency. Theoretical calculations show that the bioregulation technique shortens the d/p‐band center, optimizing reaction intermediate adsorption and desorption. The Bio‐Pt/Co3O4 catalyst with trace Pt on the surface, designed with these strategies, achieves HER (η10 of 42 mV), OER (η10 of 221 mV), and overall water‐splitting performance (1.51 V at 10 mA cm−2), maintaining stability for over 50 h, outperforming most Pt‐based catalysts. Notably, using spent lithium‐ion battery cathodes leachate, rich in Co2⁺, successfully replicates the experiment. This approach holds promise as a mainstream method for synthesizing high‐performance materials in the future.

Effect of Bisoctrizole on Ultraviolet (UV) Absorption Properties of Silicone and Effect on Surface Roughness - An In Vitro Study.

Premature degradation is the problem of maxillofacial silicones, significantly affected by ultraviolet exposure, contributing to silicones photodegradation. Degradation necessitates frequent replacement of prostheses that increase the total cost of rehabilitation. This study evaluated the effect of bisoctrizole on the ultraviolet absorption properties of silicone material and the stability of this absorption over time. Also, the bisoctrizole effect on the surface roughness of silicone was evaluated. There were 60 prepared specimens of room temperature-vulcanising maxillofacial silicone equally divided into two groups according to the conducted tests: ultraviolet absorption test and the surface roughness test. Each group was further subdivided into groups of 10 specimens based on the weight concentration of the ultraviolet (UV) absorber added: 0%, 1% and 2%. The UV absorbance of coloured specimens was measured before and after artificial weathering for 100 and 200 hours. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied for UV absorption results, and one-way ANOVA was applied for the roughness test results to test the changing significances. Bisoctrizole incorporation led to a highly significant improvement in ultraviolet absorption in all groups, maintaining a high level even after subjecting the specimens to artificial weathering. Furthermore, the addition resulted in a significant increase in surface roughness as the concentration of bisoctrizole increased. Despite the surface roughness changes, bisoctrizole demonstrated efficacy as a UV absorber for maxillofacial silicone, making it valuable for applications such as maxillofacial prosthetics that require UV protection.

Effect of peroxide-free and peroxide-based in-office bleaching on the surface and mechanical properties of CAD/CAM esthetic restorative materials.

The study aimed to investigate the influence of H2O2-based and H2O2-free in-office bleaching on the surface and mechanical attributes of CAD/CAM composite blocks. CAD/CAM composite blocks from five different composite materials (CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, and CC5) were randomly divided into two groups according to bleaching application (H2O2-based and H2O2-free). The surface topography, morphology, nanohardness, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and fracture toughness were measured. A paired and unpaired sample t-tests gauged the effect of pre- and post-bleaching on the substrates. The estimated mean differences (before-after bleaching) suggested an increase in surface roughness for two materials CC2 and CC4, and a significant decrease in nanohardness for material CC4 and in elastic modulus for materials CC2 and CC4 with H2O2-based bleaching, whereas H2O2-free bleaching resulted in changes compatible with no change in these properties. Flexural strength and fracture toughness showed no evidence of changes, irrespective of the bleaching gel used. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed erosive effects and micropore formation due to H2O2-based bleaching. H2O2-based bleaching deteriorates the surface of CAD/CAM composite materials while H2O2-free bleaching gel had an insignificant effect on both surface and bulk properties. The clinician should carefully evaluate the potential effects of H2O2-based bleaching on the surface properties of CAD/CAM composites.

Laser scanning patterns induced surface properties variations of Ti-V-Hf-Zr non-evaporable getter film with 316L stainless steel substrates

The effects of laser treatment scanning patterns on the properties of Ti-V-Hf-Zr non-evaporable getter (NEG) film on 316L stainless steel (316L SS) substrates were analyzed. 316L SS substrates were laser-treated with different patterns, which resulted in spherical structure and protrusions on the surface of the substrates. Subsequently, Ti-V-Hf-Zr NEG films were deposited on ultrasonically cleaned laser-treated 316L SS by a direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering machine. Based on the XPS results of Ti-V-Hf-Zr, it has been revealed that the atomic proportions of film elements on the surface of samples #1-1∼#3–1 were about 2.2 (Ti):1.7 (Zr):0.9 (V):1.0 (Hf). In this paper, the Ar+-induced secondary electron yield (SEY) and surface resistivity of Ti-V-Hf-Zr NEG are discussed for the first time, and it has been observed that the laser treatment leads to an increase of the substrate surface roughness, which decreases the SEY and increases the surface resistivity.

Study on shot peening strengthening 42CrMoA steel and its fretting wear properties

In order to improve the tribological properties of 42CrMoA steel, it was shot peened using different parameters. The surface morphology, residual stresses, hardness, and micromotor properties of the treated specimens were thoroughly evaluated. The results showed that it led to substantial plastic deformation, increased surface roughness, grain refinement, and introduction of residual compressive stresses. In addition, a significant increase in microhardness and depth of hardened layers on the specimen surfaces was observed. Furthermore, a positive correlation between the effect of the shot peening process and the peening duration was observed. As revealed by the investigation, the shot peening process not only advances the wear resistance of the specimens but also leads to a reduced wear volume compared to untreated specimens. Furthermore, this treatment triggers a shift in the wear mechanism from the predominant occurrence of severe adhesive wear, fatigue wear, and abrasive wear in untreated specimens to a predominant mode of abrasive wear, accompanied by a minor occurrence of adhesive wear.

Electrospun Fiber Surface Roughness Modulates Human Monocyte-Derived Macrophage Phenotype.

Injuries to fibrous connective tissues have very little capacity for self-renewal and exhibit poor healing after injury. Phenotypic shifts in macrophages play a vital role in mediating the healing response, creating an opportunity to design immunomodulatory biomaterials which control macrophage polarization and promote regeneration. In this study, electrospun poly(-caprolactone) fibers with increasing surface roughness (SR) were produced by increasing relative humidity and inducing vapor-induced phase separation during the electrospinning process. The impact of surface roughness on macrophage phenotype was assessed using human monocyte-derived macrophages in vitro and in vivo using B6.Cg-Tg(Csf1r-EGFP)1Hume/J (MacGreen) mice. In vitro experiments showed that macrophages cultured on mesh with increasing SR exhibited decreased release of both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines potentially driven by increased protein adsorption and biophysical impacts on the cells. Further, increasing SR led to an increase in the expression of the pro-regenerative cell surface marker CD206 relative to the pro-inflammatory marker CD80. Mesh with increasing SR were implanted subcutaneously in MacGreen mice, again showing an increase in the ratio of cells expressing CD206 to those expressing CD80 visualized by immunofluorescence. SR on implanted biomaterials is sufficient to drive macrophage polarization, demonstrating a simple feature to include in biomaterial design to control innate immunity.

Optimization of Lost Foam Coating Performance: Effects of Blade Shape, Stirring Speed, and Drying Temperature on Viscosity, Coating Weight, and Surface Morphology

The current investigation focuses on the viscosity, coating weight, and surface characteristics of lost foam casting coatings, examining the effects of blade shape, stirring speed, and stirring time. A systematic analysis was conducted to determine how different stirring speeds and durations influenced coating weight and viscosity. The results indicate that the blade shape has a considerable impact on the uniformity and efficacy of the coating, with some designs being far more effective in reaching the optimal viscosity and coating weight through uniformly distributed mixing. Results were consistently obtained when stirring at 800–1200 rpm. It was demonstrated that while stirring speed significantly impacts coating deposition, it has small effect on viscosity. A stirring time of 30 min was found optimal for stabilizing coating weight and viscosity without significant variations. Drying at room temperature produced smoother surfaces with fewer cracks, whereas higher drying temperatures (50 °C) were associated with increased surface roughness and cracking. Crack analysis after drying revealed that coatings mixed with the tri-blade had the lowest tendency to crack, demonstrating its superior capability for even and thorough mixing.

Role of surface roughness in determining surface energy and magnetic properties of Fe80Ce20 films during thermal processing on Si(100) and glass substrates

In this study, Fe80Ce20 films were deposited on Si(100) and glass substrates using sputtering in a high-vacuum environment and subsequently heat-treated in a vacuum annealing furnace. The films, with thicknesses ranging from 10 nm to 50 nm, were annealed at temperatures of 100 °C, 200 °C, and 300 °C. The objective was to investigate the effects of film thickness and annealing temperature on the structural, surface energy, and magnetic properties of the material. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of both Si(100)/Fe80Ce20 and Glass/Fe80Ce20 films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed a smooth film surface that became rougher after annealing. Contact angle measurements indicated hydrophilic properties, with the highest surface energy observed in the as-deposited films due to a higher density of defects and grain boundaries. The hysteresis loop demonstrated exceptional soft magnetic properties and a high saturation magnetization (Ms) of approximately 2000 emu/cm³. Annealing at 100 °C altered the magnetic domain structure from a striped labyrinthine configuration to an aligned pattern. At higher annealing temperatures, the films exhibited grain growth, increased surface roughness, and new grain formation. Following annealing, the grains in the Fe80Ce20 films became larger, surface roughness increased, and the water contact angle increased, rendering the films more hydrophobic. The as-deposited films displayed the highest surface energy due to the high density of defects and grain boundaries. Increased surface roughness led to more grain boundary defects and irregularities, which served as pinning points for magnetic domain walls, thus increasing coercivity (Hc). Rough surfaces induced local stress fields, increased magnetic anisotropy, and decreased saturation magnetization. Thermal perturbations from higher annealing temperatures further disrupted the alignment of the magnetic moments, leading to a reduction in saturation magnetization.

Co-production of cellulose and lignin by Taguchi-optimized one-pot deep eutectic solvent-assisted ball milling pretreatment of raw oil palm leaves

This study explores an eco-friendly delignification technique for raw oil palm leaves (OPL), highlighting the optimized conditions of choline chloride-lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES)-mediated ball milling pretreatment to maximize the co-production yields of highly crystalline cellulose and lignin. Our five-level-four-factor Taguchi design identified the optimal reaction settings for cellulose production (85.83 % yield, 47.28 % crystallinity) as 90-minute milling, 1500 rpm, mill-ball size ratio of 30:10, ball-to-sample mass ratio of 20:1, DES-to-sample mass ratio of 3:1. Conversely, the maximal lignin extraction yield (35.23 %) occurred optimally at 120-minute milling, 600 rpm, mill-ball size ratio of 25:5, ball-to-sample mass ratio of 20:1 and DES-to-sample mass ratio of 9:1. Statistical results showed that milling frequency (p-value ≤ 0.0001) was highly significant in improving cellulose crystallinity and yield, while DES-to-sample mass ratio (p-value ≤ 0.0001) was the most impacting on lignin yield. The thermogravimetric method affirmed the elevated cellulose thermal stability, corroborating the enhanced cellulose content (40.14 % to 73.67 %) alongside elevated crystallinity and crystallite size (3.31 to 4.72 nm) shown by X-ray diffractograms. The increased surface roughness seen in micrographs mirrored the above-said post-treatment changes. In short, our optimized one-pot dual-action pretreatment effectively delignified the raw OPL to produce cellulose-rich material with enhanced crystallinity and lignin solidity.

Effect of compound surface modification of shot peening and DLC coating on surface integrity and fatigue properties of gear steel 16Cr3NiWMoVNbE

We conducted a study on the surface compound modification of shot peening and pure carbon DLC coating to simultaneously meet the requirements of wear resistance and fatigue resistance of spline structure. The effects of surface compound modification were investigated on the surface morphology, residual stress profile, microstructure, and nano-indentation hardness of 16Cr3NiWMovNbE gear steel, and conducted a comparative study on fatigue performance. The results show that the surface compound modification inherits the surface morphology and compressive residual stress gradient of shot peening, while the surface residual stress is slightly smaller than that of shot peening. In addition, surface compound modification still reflects the characteristics of high hardness and high fracture resistance of DLC coatings. Under the bending load based on spline tooth root, compared to the original specimen, the fatigue life after shot peening, pure carbon DLC coating, and surface compound modification is increased by 3.68, 2.35, and 3.36 respectively. Although the compound modified surface still maintains the shot peening morphology with a increasing surface roughness and stress concentration coefficient, the 100 μm-depth compressive residual stress profile and the subgrain refinement layer introduced, as well as the hard surface layer with good load-bearing capacity, have played the role of fatigue strengthening.

Evaluation of road roughness and its influence on operating parameters in open-pit mines

Hauling ore and waste rock is a major cost factor in open-pit mines, encompassing both road maintenance and off-road truck operation. Road maintenance costs are directly influenced by traffic volume and the size of trucks using the roads. Off-road truck operating costs are impacted by various factors, including those affecting their movement, such as the direct interaction between tires and the road surface. Tire-road interaction significantly affects rolling resistance. Rougher surfaces with deeper grooves caused by track sinks lead to higher rolling resistance. This study employed laser profiling to characterize the surface roughness of five mine haul roads in two large Brazilian iron ore mines. This study evaluated the impact of these road irregularities on various operating parameters for 240-ton off-highway trucks, including rolling resistance, average travel speed, travel time, productivity, and unit transport cost. The results indicate that a 10 cm increase in road surface roughness can lead to a significant increase in rolling resistance (up to 5%), a substantial decrease in average speed (25%), a notable increase in travel time (26%), a decrease in productivity (19%), and a corresponding increase in unit transport cost (21%).

Analysis of film cooling and flow resistance characteristics of turbine blades with thermal barrier coatings

This paper employs numerical simulation to investigate the influence of thermal barrier coatings' (TBCs) thickness and surface roughness on the cooling and flow resistance characteristics of turbine blades. The results indicate that the application of TBCs significantly enhances the surface cooling efficiency of the blades. Turbine blades coated with a 0.4 mm thickness of TBC compared to blades without thermal barrier coatings, the average cooling efficiency of the blade surface increases by 12.3 %, and the maximum temperature drop at the leading edge(LE) is 317.8 K. However, the small increment in TBCs thickness leads to an increase in aerodynamic losses in the vane passage. The static pressure coefficient continuously decreases in the suction side(SS) within the interval 0.3 < x/C < 1.0. The average flow coefficient of the film holes exhibits distinct variations in different regions of the blade. As surface roughness increases, the cooling efficiency on the SS and pressure side(PS) of the blade decreases, while the heat transfer enhancement at the LE and cooling efficiency improve. Compared to a smooth coated surface, when the surface roughness height increases to 20 μm, the blade surface cooling efficiency decreases by 1.12 %, and the average temperature rise is 10.3 K. Simultaneously, the energy loss coefficient and total pressure loss coefficient in the vane passage rise with the increase in surface roughness, while the variation in the average flow coefficient of the film cooling holes remains relatively small.

Adsorption Properties and Mechanisms of Methylene Blue by Modified Sphagnum Moss Bio-Based Adsorbents.

The abundant pore structure and carbon composition of sphagnum peat moss render it a bio-based adsorbent for efficient methylene blue removal from wastewater. By utilizing sphagnum moss sourced from Guizhou, China, as raw material, a cost-effective and highly efficient bio-based adsorbent material was prepared through chemical modification. The structure and performance of the modified sphagnum moss were characterized using SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA techniques. Batch adsorption experiments explored the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, initial dye concentration, and temperature on adsorption performance. Kinetics, isotherm models, and thermodynamics elucidated the adsorption behavior and mechanism. The modified sphagnum moss exhibited increased surface roughness and uniform surface modification, enhancing active site availability for improved adsorption. Experimental data aligned well with the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating efficient adsorption. The study elucidated the adsorption mechanism, laying a foundation for effective methylene blue removal. The utilization of modified sphagnum moss demonstrates significant potential in effectively removing MB from contaminated solutions due to its robust adsorption capability and efficient reusability.

Change in Surface Roughness on the Inner and Outer Surfaces of the Microtube during Hollow Sinking.

Hollow sinking experiments and tensile tests were conducted to clarify the evolution of surface roughness during hollow sinking. Stainless steel tubes (outer diameter: 1.5 mm; wall thickness: 0.045 mm) featuring a single grain spanning the wall thickness achieved via annealing as the starting material. The tube was drawn without an internal tool using a draw bench by controlling the tube drawing speed ratio of the die entrance and exit sides. The surface roughnesses of the inner and outer surfaces at the die entrance and exit sides of the drawn tube were compared with the surface roughnesses of the inner and outer surfaces under the uniaxial tensile deformation of the starting material. As a result, two major findings were revealed; the surface roughness formation behavior during the hollow sinking; the uniaxial tensile deformation exhibits a tube on both sides of the entrance and the exit of a die. Former uniaxial tensile deformation forms surface roughness of the tube at the die-entrance-side. However, hollow sinking reduces the roughness. The tube keeps its small roughness even though it is applied the later uniaxial tensile deformation behind the die exit. Furthermore, the conventional formula to predict the surface roughness of a metal sheet caused by the uniaxial tensile deformation can predict the surface roughness of a tube in the hollow sinking. At both die entrance and exit sides, the roughness of the inner surface was larger than that of the outer surface at the die entrance and exit side. The outer surface of the tube contacts the inside of a die when the tube passes through the die. The height of the convex parts decreased at that moment. Hollow sinking suppressed the increase in surface roughness of the inner surface as the outer surface was smoothed in the die. However, due to the formation of surface roughness after leaving the die, there is an overall increasing trend in inner surface roughness.

A study on properties of electroless Ni-B/MgB2 coatings on AZ91 magnesium alloy

This study explores MgB2 as a reinforcing agent in electroless deposition on AZ91 magnesium alloy substrates, evaluating its impact on coating properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the amorphous Ni-B coating masks initial magnesium peaks, while MgB2 enhances MgB2O(OH)6, MgB2O5, MgO, and MgB2xOy oxide phases. SEM images illustrate morphological shifts from cauliflower-like Ni-B structures to dendritic and fibrous MgB2 forms, with higher MgB2 concentrations leading to granular structures with randomly oriented crystallites resembling platelets, indicating increased magnesium content. MgB2-reinforced Ni-B coatings exhibited higher hardness than the substrate but lower than as-deposited Ni-B. Friction coefficients initially decreased with Ni-B, increased significantly with 0.1 g MgB2, and decreased with higher reinforcements, remaining higher than substrate and as-deposited Ni-B. MgB2 reinforcement increased surface roughness, causing local agglomerations in 0.5 g MgB2 coatings. Contact angle measurements demonstrated enhanced hydrophilicity due to MgB2's superhydrophilic properties influenced by surface roughness. Antibacterial tests revealed superior properties with 0.1 g MgB2, suggesting a transition to MgB2-enriched structures and influencing material properties. While Ni-B/MgB2 coatings improved over substrate, further research is needed to optimize parameters and understand stabilizer effects. These coatings also exhibited superhydrophilicity and promising antibacterial properties, suggesting potential in advanced surface engineering applications.

Effect of surface roughness on methane adsorption in shale organic nanopores from the perspective of molecular simulations

Understanding the shale gas adsorption behavior within organic nanopores is crucial for its development. The pore surfaces commonly exhibit random inherent roughness, which can significantly impact gas adsorption, while it’s still in debate about whether the roughness could enhance the gas adsorption or not. To clarify the underlying mechanisms of the effect of surface roughness, in this study, the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamic simulations are used to investigate the methane adsorption in wrinkled graphene nanochannels with various roughness. The heterogeneity of the adsorption layer along the rough topology is described in detail. The adsorption is enhanced near the concave region and weakened near the convex region. Additionally, increased surface roughness shifts the gas molecules’ aggregation modes in the concave region from a gradual gradient to oscillatory “adsorption points”. We observe that wall roughness due to the wrinkle can enhance the adsorption amount overall, attributed to the increased surface area and the increased unit adsorption capacity due to potential energy overlap. However, the contributions of both factors differ under various pressure and roughness conditions. Then a new mathematical method to estimate the gas adsorption amounts is provided and aligns well with molecular simulation results for a wide range of pressure and roughness conditions. And a potential answer the current debate about the positive or negative impact of adsorption due to roughness is promoted. The key may lie in the dominant role of the co-existed roughness caused by the fragment basal or edge surface. Our work could shed light on the underlying effect of surface roughness on the gas adsorption in shale, and have significant implications for the reserve estimation of shale gas formations.

Influence of surface texture: A comparative study on antibacterial activities of morphologically tailored zinc oxide

The morphology-dependent antibacterial activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with three different morphologies, nanowall (NW), nanosphere (NS), and, nanorod (NR) was rigorously investigated to elucidate the influence of shape and size on their performance. Their morphological, surface, and structural characteristics were meticulously analyzed using SEM, BET, and XRD techniques. The antibacterial activity of synthesized ZnO samples was initially investigated and validated through in silico docking studies against nine bacterial strains, specifically targeting 1GCI, 2DCJ, 6KMM and 3T07, 6KVQ, 1MWT from gram-positive Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. respectively, 6N38, 6CRT, 6GRH from gram-negative E. coli. The docking simulations were performed using Autodock 4.2 software, yielding promising results characterized by negative binding energies, indicative of favorable interactions. The invitro studies were assessed against three same bacteria mentioned above using the disk diffusion method. The results demonstrated a pronounced dependency of antibacterial activity on the surface area, average crystallite size, and surface roughness of ZnO samples. ZnO (NW) exhibited markedly superior antibacterial properties. This enhanced efficacy is attributed to their higher surface area to volume ratio, smaller average crystallite size and increased surface roughness facilitating more efficient interactions with bacterial cell membranes. ZnO (NR) nanoparticles exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity despite minimal surface area.

Enhanced Marangoni flow to fabricate uniform and porous SiO2 films: Toward superior high transparency, antifogging, and self- cleaning properties

Fogging on transparent substrate greatly impacts transmittance, causing inconvenience and potential hazards. Increasing surface roughness to enhance hydrophilicity often reduces transmittance. Here, by enhancing the Marangoni flow to inhibit the coffee-ring effect during SiO2 droplet drying, we propose for the first time to manufacture superhydrophilic and high-transmittance coatings with porous structures on various substrates, including glass and resin. This approach relies on a simple, potentially large-scale ultrasonic spray method to enhance the Marangoni flow of SiO2 dispersion with different particle sizes by adding multiple surfactants to reduce the surface tension of the dispersion. The water contact angle of the SiO2 film decreases to below 5° within 0.5 s, imparting anti-fogging properties to the substrate. The film exhibits a transmittance of 93.1 % at 580 nm, surpassing the inherent 90.8 % transmittance of the bare glass. Notably, the film shows remarkable self-cleaning properties due to potent hydration from eco-friendly SiO2 nanoparticles and the porous structure. Owing to the hydrogen bonding between tightly packed small-sized SiO2 particles as well as between the particles and substrate, the surface morphology of the film on glass remains intact even after washing, and soaking. The porous SiO2 film, with a contact angle dropping to below 5° within 0.5 s, maintains its superhydrophilicity even after being exposed to high temperatures, UV irradiation, and humidity conditions. The simple production process of the porous SiO2 films offers a promising method for preparing high-transmittance anti-fogging films with significant industrial potential.
