PT Pamapersada Nusantara is one of the companies in Indonesia that is engaged in coal mining contractors. One of the main activity by the company is the overburden removal and coal mining in accordance with the production targets agreed with the customer. Based on the annual production planning 2022, to achieve the customer's production target, there is one work area in the KAKAO Pit – R5B west side which is the disposal of NW01B above the mineout Pit NW01B. The Disposal will be cutback (removing the overburden) for the purpose of coal mineout. Based on survey data, the total volume of disposal cutback is 3.9 Mbcm. Technical analysis states that there is a decrease in productivity by 10%, a decrease in productivity affects a decrease in production capacity which has implications for an increase in operational costs about IDR 7.12 M. To accommodate the increase in operational costs, to maintain the company's profitability, an analysis of the proposed price adjustment of the overburden excavation about USD 0.1259/bcm.

A Proactive Microgrid Management Strategy for Resilience Enhancement Based on Nested Chance Constrained Problems

As the frequency of extreme weather events rises, the resilience of power systems is becoming increasingly important. This paper proposes a proactive microgrid management strategy for enhancing the resilience of microgrids (MGs) based on nested Mixed Integer Linear Programming problems with chance constraints. In the proposed method, MGs operate in a special operating mode referred to as the “preparation mode” to protect the vital load and maximize resource operation efficiency when an external grid outage warning is issued. The preparation mode problem is formulated to reflect both the normal and emergency mode operation conditions. The on-event phase-operation problem under emergency-mode operation conditions is nested within the pre-scheduling problem under normal-mode operation conditions in the preparation mode. Further, according to their importance, loads are divided into critical and non-critical ones in the problems. The former is represented by a chance constraint, and the latter is represented by the expected cost of load shedding in the cost function. The numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed preparation mode enables the MG to guarantee a high chance that the critical load will survive and to lower the cost of the non-critical load shedding with a minor increase in resource operation costs.

Review of Academic Space Management Process Framework for Malaysia Public Universities

In the national budget for 2021, the Malaysian government allocated RM 14.5 billion for higher education and RM50 million for infrastructure and equipment replacement in public universities. The most critical issues in managing university logistics are to fulfil academic space requirements by academic studies programs or professional bodies' accreditations. The issues arise due to indistinct information management on actual space inventory and space ownership allocation. Without a systematic space management process, it might affect static student enrolment, limited room capacity, occupancy overload, inadequate academic space facilities, poor space allocation and ownership, improper timetable management, increase in cost maintenance operation and new development costs in the future. There is still insufficient research that has comprehensively explored space management that gave impactful on the facilities management performance of the university. Thus, this study is significant to review the academic space management process framework for Malaysian public universities. Through a critical review of literature, it has been found that space strategic planning, space management operations and space audit assessment, are the three main elements of the process in space management for Malaysian public universities. It could strongly affect the overall facilities management performance in achieving sustainable development thus supporting the mission and vision of the university. This research contributed to both theoretical and practical aspects where it benefited university management, especially in the decision-making process for implementing effective institutions delivery in asset and facilities management and also becoming standard guideline on academic space management process for Malaysia public universities.

A membrane-based seawater electrolyser for hydrogen generation.

Electrochemical saline water electrolysis using renewable energy as input is a highly desirable and sustainable method for the mass production of green hydrogen1-7; however, its practical viability is seriously challenged by insufficient durability because of the electrode side reactions and corrosion issues arising from the complex components of seawater. Although catalyst engineering using polyanion coatings to suppress corrosion by chloride ions or creating highly selective electrocatalysts has been extensively exploited with modest success, it is still far from satisfactory for practical applications8-14. Indirect seawater splitting by using a pre-desalination process can avoid side-reaction and corrosion problems15-21, but it requires additional energy input, making it economically less attractive. In addition, the independent bulky desalination system makes seawater electrolysis systems less flexible in terms of size. Here we propose a direct seawater electrolysis method for hydrogen production that radically addresses the side-reaction and corrosion problems. A demonstration system was stably operated at a current density of 250 milliamperes per square centimetre for over 3,200 hours under practical application conditions without failure. This strategy realizes efficient, size-flexible and scalable direct seawater electrolysis in a way similar to freshwater splitting without a notable increase in operation cost, and has high potential for practical application. Importantly, this configuration and mechanism promises further applications in simultaneous water-based effluent treatment and resource recovery and hydrogen generation in one step.

A multi-stage stochastic programming model for adaptive biomass processing operation under uncertainty

Variations of physical and chemical characteristics of biomass reduce equipment utilization and increase operational costs of biomass processing. Biomass processing facilities use sensors to monitor the changes in biomass characteristics. Integrating sensory data into the operational decisions in biomass processing will increase its flexibility to the changing biomass conditions. In this paper, we propose a multi-stage stochastic programming model that minimizes the expected operational costs by identifying the inventory level and creating an operational decision policy for equipment speed settings. These policies take the sensory information data and the current biomass inventory level as inputs to dynamically adjust inventory levels and equipment settings according to the changes in the biomass’ characteristics. We ensure that a prescribed target reactor utilization is consistently achieved by penalizing the violation of the target reactor feeding rate. A case study is developed using real-world data collected at Idaho National Laboratory’s biomass processing facility. We show the value of multi-stage stochastic programming from an extensive computational experiment. Our sensitivity analysis indicates that updating the infeed rate of the system, the processing speed of equipment, and bale sequencing based on the moisture level of biomass improves the processing rate of the reactor and reduces operating costs.

Quantity or quality: Environmental legislation and corporate green innovations

Firms investing in environmental issues often suffer from increased operating costs and reduced profits. Therefore, rigorous environmental legislation is required to motivate firms to conduct more green innovations. This paper takes the promulgation of China's New Environmental Protection Law as an ideal quasi-natural experiment to investigate the effect of rigorous environmental legislation on corporate green innovations. By reconsolidating the “compensation effect” and the “crowding-out effect”, we find that China's New Environmental Protection Law promotes the quantity of corporate green innovations, but inhibits the quality of green innovations. The potential mechanisms regarding green innovation quantity and quality are strikingly different. China's New Environmental Protection Law promotes green innovation quantity mainly through alleviating government favoritisms and increasing the risk of environmental litigations. However, since high-quality innovations require higher investment costs and greater tolerance for failure, China's New Environmental Protection Law also tightens financing constraints and exacerbates managerial myopia, which crowds out high-quality green innovations. Moreover, China's New Environmental Protection Law causes short-term corporate performance losses, but it indeed promotes environmental performances. Our results are crucial to comprehensively understand the effectiveness of environmental legislation and provide policy inspirations for the government concerning the environment.

ANALISIS KELAYAKAN USAHA BUDIDAYA IKAN NILA (Oreochromis niloticus) KERAMBA JARING APUNG DI KABUPATEN SERUYAN KALIMANTAN TENGAH

Seruyan Regency with the capital Kuala Pembuang is one of the regencies in Central Kalimantan Province, some of its people live in coastal areas and manage fishery resources so that the marine and fishery sector is the mainstay and is very interested in utilizing marine and fishery resources in a sustainable manner. The aim of the study was to analyze the feasibility of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) floating net cages cultivation in the Seriyan district of Central Kalimantan. The location of the sampling was done purposively. The feasibility of investing in tilapia cages in the Seriyan district is calculated using the investment criteria which include Net Present Value (NPV), Net Benefit Ratio (NBCR), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The results of the analysis of the financial feasibility of tilapia cage business from 3 (three) managers were declared to have met the business feasibility criteria in 3 (three) research periods. This can be seen from the Net Present Value which has a positive value and the Internal Rate of Return which is greater than the required interest rate. The results of the sensitivity analysis with the scenario if there is an increase in operational costs by 10%, 20% and 30%, it is stated that the tilapia fish cage business from the three managers does not meet the business feasibility criteria. The results of the sensitivity analysis with the scenario if there is an increase in operational costs and a decrease in income by 10%, 20% and 30% respectively, it is stated that the tilapia fish cage business from the three managers does not meet the business feasibility criteria.

Superhydrophilic membrane with photo-Fenton self-cleaning property for effective microalgae anti-fouling

Membrane filtration is one of the effective approaches to harvest microalgae for industrial biofuel production. However, during the filtration process, microalgae cells and extracellular organic matter (EOM) will deposit on the membrane surface leading to reversible membrane fouling that can be removed by physical methods. When hydrophobic EOM is adsorbed on the membrane surface or inside pores, it will build up a gel layer, causing irreversible membrane fouling. Irreversible fouling can only be removed using chemical methods that will decrease membrane lifespan and increase operational costs. Here, we introduce a versatile superhydrophilic membrane with photo-Fenton self-cleaning property, which can prevent the reversible fouling and remove the irreversible fouling. Tannic acid (TA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) were co-deposited on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane via Schiff base and Michael addition reactions, and β-FeOOH nanorods were inlaid on the membrane surface by in situ mineralization. The water contact angle of the modified membrane is reduced from 120° to 0° Under 60 min visible light, the hydroxyl radical (·OH) generated by the photo-Fenton reaction degraded the irreversible fouling that blocked membrane pores. The irreversible fouling rates of modified membrane was reduced from 39.57% to 3.26%, compared with the original membrane. Microalgae harvesting results illustrated that the membrane has a high flux recovery rate (FRR) of 98.2%, showed excellent passive antifouling and active antifouling performance. We believe this work will spark a novel platform for optimizing energy-efficient microalgae harvesting separation membrane modules. In addition, this method of anti-fouling filtration for microorganisms can be extended to the industrial production of various bioenergy sources and will have very promising practical applications.

Simulation of energy-efficient operation for metro trains: A discrete event-driven method based on multi-agent theory

Along with the rapid development of urban rail transit systems, the increase in operating mileage is the direct result of the enormous energy consumption. Among them, the energy consumption of train traction operation is close to half of the total energy consumption, leading to a gradual increase in operation cost. Based on the discrete event-driven method of multi-agent simulation, this paper simulates the process of the train operation with four function modules. Ingenuity, trains with onboard equipment would store braking regenerative energy and then transmit regenerative energy to other traction trains in the same power supply section. Moreover, the evaluation method of renewable energy utilization efficiency also is proposed with different operation schemes to calculate train operation energy consumption. Further, an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm is designed to improve computational efficiency for real-time applications. Lastly, the operation of the Beijing Metro Yizhuang line is utilized as a case study to evaluate the simulation model and algorithm. The results show that the simulation method can reasonably simulate the process of train operation according to the actual situation. By optimizing the train operation time and dwell time of different onboard power storage equipment scenarios, the traction energy consumption can be reduced by 3.95% and up to 17.71%, which has a remarkable effect on energy saving.

Starting up anammox system with high efficiency nitrogen removal at low temperatures: Performance optimization, sludge characterization and microbial community analysis

Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) has potential advantages for nitrogen removal when operating at medium temperatures, but the increased operation costs of heating limit its application. It would be advantageous to start and operate anammox at low temperatures, the feasibility of which was studied here on a lab scale. Two identical expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were inoculated at 35 ± 1 °C (Amed) and 15 ± 3 °C (Alow). Results showed that anammox was successful after 138 d for Alow, only 7 d longer than Amed. Stable operation to 194 d in Alow, the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) increased to 1.01 kg m−3·d−1, giving a high nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 85%, which was only slightly lower than that of Amed (90%). More extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) was produced by the microbes of Alow compared to Amed, which prevented anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) against low temperature stress. Microbial community revealed presence of Candidatus Jettenia in Amed with relative abundance 7.4%, while the “cold-tolerant” Candidatus Kuenenia with 4% was the dominant anammox bacteria in Alow. The anammox granules adapted well to low temperatures and demonstrated high efficiency in anammox process without heating. Therefore, constructing an energy-saving and cost-effective anammox system in high latitudes or high altitudes can be considered.

The efficiency loss in groundwater heat pump systems triggered by thermal recycling

Thermal recycling occurring in groundwater heat pump systems is a major cause of efficiency loss in groundwater heat pump systems and its understanding is critical for systems design. However, the response of the systems performance to these phenomena is not easy to predict given that a negative feedback is created, as the rejected heated/cooled water injected back into the aquifer will tend to negatively affect the production well(s) of the doublet(s) starting the negative loop. This work approaches the nonlinearity of the thermal recycling problem for the first time, by making use of distributed numerical models of groundwater flow and heat transport combined with thermodynamic models of geothermal heat pumps. Simulation results showed that thermal interference between production and injection was unavoidable for the scenarios investigated. Different scenarios were found where the impact of thermal recycling was not sustainable during cooling seasons, thus resulting in the inoperability of the heat pump. Thermal recycling was found to be responsible of an increase in operation costs of up to 38.4 k€·year−1, as well as of an environmental impact due to the release of up to 76.2 t eqCO2·year−1 for a 402 kWth installation. The results of this article will allow to improve the understanding of thermal recycling as a nonlinear complex and a transient process responsible for an efficiency loss of groundwater heat pump systems.

Removal of Amoxicillin from Processing Wastewater by Ozonation and UV-Aided Ozonation: Kinetic and Economic Comparative Study

This work presents an empirical and scaling-up study of the degradation and mineralization of amoxicillin (AMX) from expired pharmaceutical formulations by O3-based processes. A set of UV–ozone-based experiments was used to model the kinetics of AMX degradation, considering several chemical/photochemical mechanisms (hydrolysis, direct ozonation, radical reactions, and photolysis). Finally, the modeling data were used for scaling-up purposes, considering CAPEX and OPEX costs on the US Gulf Coast basis. In terms of experimental results, the amoxicillin (AMX) pharmaceutical effluent was successfully degraded by ozone technology at high pH values. The semi-batch ozonation process was effective after 60 min of treatment in all experimental conditions, producing degradation intermediates recalcitrant to O3 oxidative process. From the bench-scale kinetics, scaling-up simulations indicate that the gain provided by adding a UV unit does not compensate for the increase in capital and operational costs of adding irradiation equipment. It suggests ozonation at high pH as the best cost-effective approach to degrade AMX. The figures-of-merit electric energy consumption per order (EEO) corroborates the scaling-up simulations. EEO results indicate no-UV ozonation as the best option to degrade AMX at high pH values. The EEO of the present work showed a lower energy consumption system than previous papers from the literature.

Technical features of a self-expandable prosthetic valve for the treatment of pulmonary valve disease

Background. Balloon-expandable prostheses authorized for transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement in the Russian Federation have a barrel-shaped frame, which requires pre-stenting of a native right ventricular outflow tract or a conduit. This increases procedure duration, complicates implantation technique, and increases operation costs. Aim. To develop a self-expandable pulmonary valve model for transcatheter replacement and prepare it for preclinical trials.Methods. The model of a self-expandable pulmonary valve bioprothesis for transcatheter replacement made of nitinol was developed. The leaflets and the lining of the frame were made of porcine pericardium and assembled manually. Radial force testing was performed; valve loading into the delivery system was also tested.Results. According to the results of the tests, the valve biomaterial and the suture sites were not damaged after compression. In 2022, initial preclinical tests are scheduled to determine viability of the implanted valves at 6 and 12 months after surgery, and the rate of calcification for this observation period is to be assessed as well.Conclusion. By optimizing the design of the support frame, we improved the transcatheter model of the biological valve with satisfactory results at the initial stage of preclinical trials. Promoting Australian regional airports with subsidy schemes: Optimised downstream logistics using vehicle routing problem

The major metropolitan airports in Australia have become increasingly congested, resulting in substantial increases in operational costs and waiting time at these airports. This paper assesses the effectiveness of subsidy programs in shifting airfreight from metropolitan airports to regional airports assuming the vehicle routing problem approach is used to optimise the downstream (i.e., road) logistics. We analyse the freight distribution network structure and logistics decisions under two (government) subsidy scenarios. We develop a mixed integer linear programming model incorporating the time-window and release-time constraints. A case study in Australia is used to illustrate the application of the proposed framework. The results show that introducing subsidies can effectively reduce the total costs from the prospective of industries involved in the airfreight distribution. The subsidy program under a non-linear subsidy provides a better performance from the economic and delivery time perspectives. However, if the primary goal is to reduce the volume of cargo traffic at the metropolitan airport, a linear subsidy program is preferred.

The Relationship Between Regulatory Requirements Reviews, Compliance Benefits and Costs: Evidence from Selected Commercial Banks in Tanzania

The Central Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has undergone various bank regulations reviews at different periods of time including 2008 and 2014 reviews. After the reviews some banks have shown low compliances, collapsed and merged while others have shown high compliances and greater performance. This study therefore, intended to assess how commercial banks in Tanzania benefits from complying with new regulatory requirements and to determine to what extent does compliance costs affects banks performance. The study employed an exploratory research design using the sample size of 24 commercial banks selected from Dar es Salaam headquarters; however, only 13 key informants were successfully reached. Primary data were collected from compliance and risk management managers using interview guide. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis and findings from the study show that most banks have well benefited with the new regulatory requirements in terms of increase in profit, expansion of more branches, ATMs and increase in number of customers. Considering the compliance costs; findings show that to some extent some new regulatory requirements reviews have increased operating costs to most banks. The study recommends that banks should carefully design strategies which will help them to control NPL, manage and increase more capital and liquidity requirements. To the regulator the study recommends that; BoT should think of reviewing liquidity requirements and cash reserve ratio which seem to be too high and costly for most banks to afford. The BoT can also introduce separate capital adequacy requirements as per bank size.

Energy and Thermo-Economic Analysis of Crude Oil Gathering Station and Hydrocarbon Transport

The decline in Indonesia's national crude oil production which is directly proportional to the increase in production operational costs has an impact on reducing state revenues from oil and gas revenue sharing funds. One of the efforts that can be done to eliminate losses from this sector is to conduct energy analysis and exergy analysis to determine the locations where energy and exergy losses occur which are then converted into economic costs in the upstream oil and gas business in the form of losses operating costs. Energy and exergy analysis in this study was conducted at a crude oil collection station and hydrocarbon transportation facility at CPP Blok, Riau, Indonesia. The results showed that the largest energy flow was found in the wash tank, which was 183.546 KW, the shipping pump was 240346.34 KW, and the heater was 398.4 KW. The largest exergy destruction occurred in washing tanks of 73,418 KW, shipping pumps of 0.319 KW and heaters of 0.363 KW, with a total exergy destruction cost of all equipment of 64,243.29 USD/year.

Examination of engine oil condition of dump trucks in open pit mines in the Republic of Armenia

The mining industry of the Republic of Armenia makes an important contribution to the country’s economy, developing rapidly and providing up to 33 % of the share of the raw materials sector. In order to enhance performance and productivity of mining companies in the Republic of Armenia, it is necessary to increase operating efficiency of process equipment and, first of all, of heavy-duty dump trucks, in particular, the BELAZ family. It should be noted that the considerable maintenance and repair burden raises specific demands for the reliability and operability of systems, components and aggregates of dump trucks, in particular, internal combustion engines. The studies have found that the downtime of BELAZ dump trucks because of engine malfunctions accounts for 29 % of the total balance of downtime, which directly leads to the increased operating costs and reduced productivity. The power units of dump trucks have no backup, and, as a result, failure of a unit or a few units will lead to failure of the car as a whole. Power units have closed lubrication systems, failures of which account for a significant share in the total balance of failures of motor vehicles—from 38 to 48 %. In this regard, it is advisable to have information about technical condition of the machine from such source as the lubricating oil. Based on such information from the spectral analysis of the worked oil, it is possible to identify the most unreliable element of the system and perform the entire range of maintenance and repair that allows effective control over technical condition of the car. In order to determine the worked oil characteristics, engine oil of 11 BELAZ dump truck, having different operational life lengths, were subjected to the spectral analysis. The research proved high performance characteristics of engine oil G-Profit MSI Plus SAE 15W-40 API Ci-4/SL and confirmed its application advisability in operation of dump trucks in open pit mines in Armenia.

RETRACTED: Economic and environmental assessment of interconnected hub systems in the presence of thermal, water and hydrogen storage systems

Simultaneous management of freshwater consumption and energy expenses in an uncertain environment is one of the most challenging issues. So, in this paper, a model comprising three interconnected hub systems is studied in an uncertain environment considering two financial and environmental targets. Minimizing energy expenses is the financial target, and freshwater extraction is regarded as an environmental target. The uncertain nature of pool market prices and electrical, thermal and water demands and the risk linked with uncertain parameters are modelled and managed using an adjustable robust optimization approach. Furthermore, two incompatible objective functions are handled simultaneously using the ɛ-constraint method. The studied model is simulated in eleven different robustness levels and four different levels of water extraction, which makes effective strategies that can be selected and used based on the operator's priorities. According to the results, with an approximate 13.56 % increase in operation costs, freshwater extraction can decrease from the highest to the lowest level. Besides, the studied hub systems can reach the highest resistance level with nearly 56.09 % increases in operating expenses. • Risk-oriented energy management of interconnected hub systems is studied. • Economic and environmental functions are solved using the ɛ-constraint method. • Adjustable robust optimization approach is proposed to model the uncertain parameters. • The studied model is simulated in eleven different robustness levels.

Sustainability analysis of implementing sludge reduction in overall sludge management process: Where do we stand?

Sustainable sludge management has significance due to the great potential of recovering energy and resources, potentially achieving carbon neutrality and energy positivity in the process. However, whether the sludge reduction strategy really benefits the aim of a sustainable sludge management process requires a holistic analysis. In this study, nine scenarios involving different sludge management strategies with or without sludge reduction methods were environmentally and economically assessed to clarify the necessity of adopting a sludge reduction or not. Results reveal that direct sludge incineration without prior in-plant sludge reduction generates the least environmental impacts (less than 25–120 %), but it increases operation costs by 103–110 % compared to landfilling with prior in-plant sludge reduction. Chemical Oxygen Demand flows indicate that direct sludge incineration is superior in converting organic matter into energy compared to employing sludge reduction followed by landfilling or land application. This converted energy offsets environmental impacts from electricity consumption, but these electricity benefits are insignificant in the overall cost. Case studies suggest that direct sludge incineration could facilitate potential nutrient and energy recovery, especially for metropolis. While sludge reduction strategies are more suited for developing regions relying on landfills or land application, to lower the economic burdens. The findings of this study tend to shed light on the decision-making of adopting sludge reduction strategies and sustainable sludge management.

Agility of facilities management organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons learnt for future pandemics

PurposeThis study aims to investigate how agile facilities management (FM) organizations were during the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore, examine the agile strategies adopted and extracted lessons learnt for managing facilities in future pandemics.Design/methodology/approachData were collected using a questionnaire coupled with in-depth interviews with FM professionals.FindingsThe FM sector experienced significant challenges such as increased operating cost and shortage of FM staff. FM organizations were assessed to be agile as they overcame challenges swiftly, made rapid changes to their service offerings as the situation evolved, engaged facility owners actively and adopted strategies that were flexible and responsive. They also adopted health-centric employee care.Research limitations/implicationsThe research was conducted during the pandemic. The final verdict of FM organizations’ agility and the most effective practices may only be known when the COVID-19 pandemic ends.Practical implicationsLessons learnt for FM to manage future pandemics were crystalized. These include reducing reliance on manpower, boosting technology adoption and personalized employee engagement.Originality/valueThis study added to knowledge by testing and confirming that the agility theory and its six metrics of agility comprising flexibility, velocity, responsiveness, collaboration, visibility and competence may be used by FM organizations to be agile in a crisis or disruption. Its originality is the discovery of a new construct – health-centric employee care – that is needed to further boost FM organizations’ agility performance in a pandemic. Health-centric employee care involves practices to reduce intra-staff transmission of the virus and individualized employee support to build resilience.
