Neutral pion production in subthreshold heavy ion collision with16O (38 MeV/u) and20Ne (200 MeV/u) beams

Inclusive production of neutral pions has been studied in16O +27Al,197Au reactions at 38 MeV/u and20Ne +27Al reaction at 200 MeV/u. A setup of 10 Pb glass Cherenkov detector telescopes was used to detect the twoγ rays from theπ 0 decay.

Production of neutral pions in heavy-ion collisions at Elab

Inclusive production of neutral pions was observed at ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}/\mathrm{A}=25}$ MeV in the reactions $^{16}$O+Al,Ni\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$+X. Neutral pions were detected by observing their two decay \ensuremath{\gamma} rays in coincidence in an array of 20 Pb-glass Cerenkov-detector telescopes. An array of plastic Cerenkov detectors was added to the above array to tag and reject a significant cosmic-ray background. The observed cross sections are much larger than predicted by nucleon-nucleon collision or statistical models, even if cooperative action of target and projectile nucleons and cluster formation in the final channel are taken into account. This indicates the presence of a collective production mechanism.

General features of [formula omitted] interactions at 32 GeV/ c

The general features of p p interactions at 32 GeV/ c are analysed in a bubble chamber experiment with a statistics of 5.2 μb/event. The inclusive production of neutral strange particles and pions is analysed and compared to results obtained at other energies and in pp interactions. Total cross sections are determined for various 4C reactions and the relative contributions of diffractive dissociation and ΔΔ production to the reaction p p→ p pπ +π − are estimated.

Near threshold production of neutral pions by complex particles

Cross sections for the inclusive neutral pion production cross section have been measured for near threshold energy 3He particles on complex nuclei. The results of these measurements are of order 10 −36 cm 2/sr · MeV. The neutral pion cross section for 710 MeV 4He on 12C has been found to be comparable to the production cross section for nucleons, 10 −30 cm 2/sr · MeV. Comparisons are made with a naive model relating complex particle production to nucleon production of pions.
