Functional monomers and polymers. CXLVII. Inclusion compounds of poly(1,3‐butadiyne) in deoxycholic acid and apocholic acid canals: Synthesis and characterization

AbstractThe inclusion polymerization of 1,3‐butadiyne was studied at different temperatures using deoxycholic acid and apocholic acid as the host molecules. The polymers that resulted consist of predominantly 1,4‐structure rather than 1,2 or acene structure as confirmed by both IR and Raman spectroscopies. The poly(1,3‐butadiyne)s were found to possess unique optical properties and high electric conductivity as compared with those prepared by the usual polymerization methods.

The inclusion polymerization of 1,3-butadiyne was studied at different temperatures, using deoxycholic acid and apocholic acid as the host molecules. The structure as well as the properties of the polymers obtained were measured in detail. The new composites of poly(1,3-butadiyne) were found to show unique (characteristic) spectroscopic properties and electric conductivity.

Inclusion polymerization in perhydrotriphenylene studied by ESR spectroscopy: Growing chain structure and conformation of methylsubstituted polybutadienes

AbstractInclusion polymerization of diene monomers promoted by γ rays and performed in perhydrotriphenylene was studied by ESR techniques. During polymerization of butadiene, 1,3‐pentadiene, isoprene, 2,3‐dimethylbutadiene, 2‐methylpentadiene, and 2,4‐hexadiene, spectra attributable to allyl‐type radicals were collected. It was demonstrated they actually represent the propagating radicals and they do not vary over a long period of time. They are not temperature dependent in the range −150°/ +60°C, apart from the radical of polybutadiene, suggesting that the included methyl‐substituted polybutadienes are conformationally fixed. When the two opposite insertions of monomers 1,4 and 4,1 are distinguishable, the radicals bearing the higher number of methyl groups at the ends of allyl system prevail.

Crystal structure of the phenylacetylene-choleic acid

Deoxycholic acid (C24H40O4, M r =392.58) and phenylacetylene (C8H6, M r =102.14) form a 2:1 inclusion compound which crystallizes in space groupP212121 witha=25.542(6),b=13.662(5),c=7.227(2) A,Z=4. The finalR is 0.071 for 2168 observed reflections withI>1.5σ(I). The crystal packing is characterized by an assembly of antiparallel pleated bilayers of deoxycholic acid molecules which leave empty channels running alongc. Phenylacetylene molecules are accommodated within the cavities in an ordered fashion and are very probably arranged in only one orientation, which was determined by means of Van der Waals energy calculations. Atoms of deoxycholic acid belonging to ring A and to the side-chain are engaged in binding interactions with the guest molecule. The arrangement of the guest molecules supports the experimental results of γ irradiation, which show a failure of the phenylacetylene molecules to undergo inclusion polymerization.

Functional monomers and polymers, 109. Asymmetric inclusion polymerization of (E)‐ and (Z)‐2‐methyl‐1,3‐pentadiene in apocholic acid canals

AbstractAsymmetric inclusion polymerization of the prochiral monomers (E)‐ and (Z)‐2‐methyl‐1,3‐pentadiene (3a and 3b), in apocholic acid (2) canals was performed under various conditions to find out the factors controlling the asymmetric induction during the polymerization. Ozonolysis of the resulting polymers and subsequent transformation of the resulting 2‐methyl‐4‐oxovaleric acid (4) into its 2,4‐dinitrophenylhydrazone revealed the predominant formation of the (R)‐absolute configuration. The optical yield was high in the initial stage of the polymerization and decreased gradually as the polymerization proceeds. To obtain a high optical yield the polymerization was performed at low temperature applying a 1:1 mole ratio monomer/apocholic acid, and an irradiation dose < 1 Mrad. The optical yield amounted to 36% at maximum, which is the highest value obtained so far in the asymmetric polymerization of 1,3‐pentadiene derivatives using canal complexes or other known methods.

Melting behaviour of native 1,4‐trans‐isotactic‐polypentadiene obtained by inclusion polymerization in perhydrotriphenylene

AbstractThe extrapolated melting point of native 1,4‐trans‐isotactic‐polypentadiene obtained by inclusion polymerization in pre‐irradiated perhydrotriphenylene is 104°C, 10 K higher than that of a long‐annealed conventional polymer. The WAXS spectrum corresponds to that of the already known paracrystalline structure; this notwithstanding, its heat of melting is 20–70% higher than that of polypentadiene crystallized from solution or from the melt. The native polymer shows noteworthy superheating phenomena and is not able to induce crystallization of high‐melting crystals from the melt. This behaviour is consistent with that predicted for extended‐chain polymeric crystals. This conclusion is supported by the absence of definite peaks in the SAXS spectrum of the native polymer.

Inclusion polymerization consists in the polymerization of unsaturated monomers inserted, as guest molecules, into the crystal lattice of a different host molecule. Polymers thus obtained often possess a high constitutional and configurational regularity. In some cases they also present optical activity and an extended-chain macroconformation in the nascent state. Structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies provide evidence that the reaction takes place in the solid phase. Various types of reaction control are examined and data are presented, showing that asymmetric induction is transmitted through space and not through bonds.

Functional Monomers and Polymers. LXXXIII. Synthesis of Optically Active Polymers from trans- and cis-2-Methyl-1,3-pentadienes by Asymmetric Inclusion Polymerization in Deoxycholic Acid Canals

Optically active polymers of trans- and cis-2-methyl-1,3-pentadienes were prepared by asymmetric inclusion polymerization in deoxycholic acid canals. All of the polymers prepared were found to be of 1,4-trans, head-to-tail structures and showed high optical rotations of (+) sign. It was also found that the optical activity changes reversibly with temperature.

Asymmetric inclusion polymerization in apocholic acid canals

Asymmetric inclusion polymerization of four prochiral diene monomers was studied in apocholic acid canal complexes. All the polymers obtained were found to show specific rotations of (−) sign, different from the cases of polymerization in deoxycholic acid canals.

Functional monomers and polymers, 52. Inclusion polymerization of 2,3‐dimethyl‐1,3‐butadiene: Competitive incorporation of additives with the monomer in deoxycholic acid canals

AbstractInclusion polymerization of 2,3‐dimethyl‐1,3‐butadiene in deoxycholic acid canals was studied in the presence of several types of non‐polymerizable organic compounds including alkanes and polar molecules. These compounds were found to be incorporated competitively with 2,3‐dimethyl‐1,3‐butadiene monomer into deoxycholic acid canals, causing thereby much or less decrease in the rate of polymerization depending on the structure of additives. Deoxycholic acid canals were found to incorporate more favorably branched or cyclic alkanes than linear ones. From the results obtained, the behaviour of competitive incorporation was discussed in relation to the polymerizability of the monomer within the canals.
