Sustainability and dialysis: the 4 main points for a green dialysis

Dialysis represents a big challenge for the environmental sustainability, because it is bound to high consumption of water and electricity, hazardous waste incineration and subsequent greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, it has been recognized the urgent need to preserve our environment together with the people’s health, starting from making dialysis greener. This awareness has led to a new paradigm in the history of dialysis, the concept of Green Nephrology. The Italian Society of Nephrology published 10 affordable actions in the Position Statement with the aims to increase awareness, propose joint actions and coordinate industrial/social interactions. Starting from these, there are four key points to pave the way for environmental sustainability: 1) Sustainable technologies (i.e., machines, filters, water treatment systems, acid concentrates, lighter materials, electronic patient record); 2) Green dialysis centers; 3) Environmental improvement project, using tools to define targets and their monitoring; 4) Nurse role, as he is the main environmental sustainability promoter. To achieve Green Nephrology it’s necessary a partnership between all the stakeholders of the healthcare system. Since the growing awareness of the problem and the existence of ways to solve it, it’s time to act and the effective way to do it is to implement all the solutions provided in this article in an immediate future.

Achieving the sustainable waste management of medical plastic packaging using a life cycle assessment approach

Hospital waste management often classifies all waste, including uncontaminated plastic packaging, as hazardous, leading to incineration as the primary treatment method. While effective for safe treatment, incineration incurs high costs and significant environmental impacts. This study explores an alternative approach through the segregation and sustainable management of plastic packaging waste derived from medical device use to mitigate these environmental consequences. Using a Life Cycle Assessment, this research evaluates and compares the environmental impacts of three waste disposal scenarios of plastic packaging: hazardous waste incineration, general waste landfill, and plastic recycling. The analysis focuses on 1 kg of plastic packaging waste generated from medical devices at the Limb Vascular Center, Konkuk University Hospital, South Korea. The results show that general waste landfill has an environmental impact of 79.7 % and plastic recycling has an impact of just 11.8 %, highlighting their significantly lower environmental impacts compared to hazardous waste incineration. These findings underscore the significant benefits of adopting more sustainable waste management practices in healthcare and offering valuable insights for enhancing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices within hospitals.

Innovative process for sulphur recovery from waste incineration flue gases: production of marketable sodium bisulphite solution

ABSTRACT This study presents an innovative process for recovering sulphur from hazardous waste incineration flue gases, designed to produce a marketable sodium bisulphite solution while ensuring complete SO2 removal. This new process is characterized by a double absorption strategy at two different pH levels. The first step, at an acidic pH, generates the desired bisulphite solution, while the second step, at a basic pH, produces the sulphite solution for recycling into the first step and ensures total SO2 removal. The process’s performance and feasibility were evaluated on a laboratory scale using a batch reactor with synthetic gas. The parametric study focused on the initial sulphite concentration in the absorption solution and the reactor temperature. A removal efficiency exceeding 95% was achieved across all initial sulphite concentrations and temperature ranges, when the pH was maintained above 6. At pH 5, where bisulphites are the predominant sulphur species, the removal efficiency remained substantial at approximately 70%. The oxidation of sulphites/bisulphites by oxygen in the flue gases was minimal, with less than 5% conversion to sulphate. Additionally, pH-controlled experiments were conducted to optimize plant start-up procedures. For the basic reactor, starting with water and adjusting the pH to 8 during SO2 absorption effectively minimized sodium hydroxide consumption. In contrast, for the acidic reactor at pH 5, initiating the process with a concentrated sulphite solution resulted in more stable absorption rates. These findings underscore the process's potential for efficient sulphur recovery and highlight the importance of pH management in optimizing operational stability and chemical consumption.

Atmospheric emissions of hexachlorobutadiene in fine particulate matter from industrial sources

Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) is a concerning chemical that is included in the United States Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Stockholm Convention. Knowledge of the sources of HCBD is insufficient and is pivotal for accurate inventory and implementing global action. In this study, unintentional HCBD release and source emission factors of 121 full-scale industrial plants from 12 industries are investigated. Secondary copper smelting, electric arc furnace steelmaking, and hazardous waste incineration show potential for large emission reductions, which are found of high HCBD emission concentrations of > 20 ng/g in fine particulate matter in this study. The highest HCBD emission concentration is observed for the secondary copper smelting industry (average: 1380 ng/g). Source emission factors of HCBD for the 12 industries range from 0.008 kg/t for coal fire power plants to 0.680 kg/t for secondary lead smelting, from which an estimation of approximately 8452.8 g HCBD emissions annually worldwide achieved. The carcinogenic risks caused by HCBD emissions from countries and regions with intensive 12 industrial sources are 1.0-80 times higher than that without these industries. These results will be useful for formulating effective strategies of HCBD control.

Evaluation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) outflows during the destruction of HBCD wastes in a hazardous waste incinerator

This paper presents an evaluation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) outflows during the destruction of HBCD waste stockpiles in IZAYDAS Hazardous Waste Incinerator (HWI) in Kocaeli, Türkiye. HBCD wastes containing 100 % pure HBCD were in 25 kg packages with 63 % Br content were co-incinerated in a 3-day test burn with average feed rate of 26 kg/h. HBCD, PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs were measured in the outlet streams to quantify the amount of unintended POPs releases associated with the processing of HBCD waste and to observe the POP removal performance of air pollution control equipment (APCE) of the incinerator. Total mass outflow rate of HBCDs is calculated as 2.6 g/day, corresponding to destruction efficiency of 99.9996 %. Total toxicity of the brominated dioxins was measured as 0.00044 ng TEQ/Nm3 on average, while highly brominated congeners are dominant. PCDD/F concentrations in the outflow streams during HBCD test burns are produced similar congener distributions with those given in the previous studies, with the dominance of 7,8-chlorinated congeners. Mass flows in the outlet streams indicated that the efficiency of ESP and wet scrubbers for the removal of PCDD/Fs and HBCDs. Flue gas concentrations of PCDD/Fs, HBCDs and PBDD/Fs obtained in HBCD burn test indicated that burning HBCD wastes cause no significant emissions as operational parameters and total halogen content in the menu are kept within the incinerator limits.

Fundamentals of NO reduction by liquid wastes: The first application in hazardous waste incineration

To meet increasingly stringent standards of Nitrogen oxide (NOx), it is highly desirable to develop high-efficiency denitration technology during hazardous waste incineration. Therefore, a state-of-art decoupling combustion technology of liquid hazardous wastes (LHW) has been proposed to achieve low NOx emission. In this technology, LHW is introduced into a low-NOx reactor to reduce NOx generated from solid hazardous waste (SHW) incineration prior to its complete combustion. The present article is devoted to clarifying the optimal conditions for denitration reactions by LHW, so the capabilities of nitric oxide (NO) reduction by reduction by LHW model compounds, namely methanol and methylbenzene, were evaluated in fixed-bed and fluidized-bed reactors. The highest denitration efficiency is 78.9% at 900 °C for methanol and 70.0% at 1000 °C for methylbenzene in the test temperature range. The NO reduction activities were closely associated with cracking characteristics of LHW. The presence of oxygen (O2) exhibited different effects on denitration: it promoted NO reduction at low temperatures due to the generation of more denitration-favored agents but suppressed NO reduction at high temperatures due to the oxidation of denitration-favored agents into CO2 and H2O by excessive O2. Moreover, the fluidized-bed reactor, characterized by good heat transfer, exhibited an approximately 17% higher NO reducing efficiency compared to the fixed-bed reactor at low temperatures, but both reactors demonstrated similar NO reduction efficiencies of around 83% at high temperatures. In addition, methanol and methylbenzene showed higher NO reduction efficiencies than their cracking-produced reducing gases, with the reducing gases accounting for approximately 50% of the overall NO reduction efficiency at 1000 °C. According to the above results, a two-step denitration reaction pathway was proposed in which both cracking-formed free radicals and reducing gases contribute to the overall NO reduction. The results of this study can provide valuable insights for NO reduction in the hazardous waste disposal.

Enhancing the Performance of a Hazardous Waste Incineration Facility through the Usage of a Dedicated Application

Thermal transformation of waste carried out in a rotary kiln is a complex process, usually involving hazardous waste. Due to the great diversity of these wastes and their specific properties, the process of their thermal transformation may be associated with various types of operational problems. The reasons for their occurrence include, among others, processes potentially affecting the deterioration of the condition of the rotary kiln lining. In order to minimize problems, a tool is proposed to support the work of incineration plant operators. This is an application that enables generation of input material portions in subsequent kiln feeds. It is characterized by wide functionality, including the ability to assign higher weights to selected parameters. The application is based on an algorithm that takes into account the key waste parameters from the point of view of the thermal process, which have been given specific value ranges. Two series of simulations were performed with the same assumptions except for change in the weight for one of the parameters in the second case. In the first series, the following ranges of the considered parameters were obtained: calorific value 14.96–20.66 MJ/kg, pH 5.59–8.11, content of alkaline salts 1.42–7.39, content of chlorine 1.1–3.83, content of halogens 0.08–0.97. In the second series of simulations, the favored parameter was the calorific value, which ranged from 17.08 MJ/kg to 18.69 MJ/kg. The range of values for the remaining parameters changed slightly, with all meeting the criteria. Application tests showed the generation of waste mixtures with parameters consistent with the established ranges.

Characterization and stabilization of incineration fly ash from a new multi-source hazardous waste co-disposal system: field-scale study on solidification and stabilization.

The multi-source hazardous waste co-disposal system, a recent innovation in the industry, offers an efficient approach for hazardous waste disposal. The incineration fly ash (HFA) produced by this system exhibits characteristics distinct from those of typical incineration fly ash, necessitating the use of adjusted disposal methods. This study examined the physicochemical properties, heavy metal content, heavy metal leaching concentration, and dioxin content of HFA generated by the new co-disposal system and compared them with those of conventional municipal waste incineration fly ash. This study investigated the solidification and stabilization of HFA disposal using the organic agent sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate combined with cement on a field scale. The findings revealed significant differences in the structure, composition, and dioxin content of HFA and FA; HFA contained substantially lower levels of dioxins than FA did. Concerning the heavy metal content and leaching; HFA exhibited an unusually high concentration of zinc, surpassing the permitted emission limits, making zinc content a critical consideration in HFA disposal. After stabilization and disposal, the heavy metal leaching and dioxin content of HFA can meet landfill disposal emission standards when a 1% concentration of 10% sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) and 150% silicate cement were employed. These results offer valuable insights into the disposal of fly ash resulting from incineration of mixed hazardous waste.

INFLUENCE OF PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF HAZARDOUS SOLID WASTE INCINERATION ASHES (HSWIA) ON LANDFILL LEACHATE FILTRATION

The study examines the reuse of hazardous waste incineration ashes in landfill leachate treatment. Its objective is to assess how the particle size distribution of the ashes affects the reduction of physicochemical parameters in leachate at the Caucaia Sanitary Landfill in Ceará, Brazil, thus valorizing them and minimizing their disposal in landfills. Two filtration columns with ashes of different particle sizes (F1 sieved and F2 raw) were set up. Leachate collected from the landfill was analyzed before and after filtration, demonstrating effectiveness in removing parameters such as phosphorus, nitrite, turbidity, nitrate, etc. The characterization of the ashes revealed differences between the samples, including varying levels of oxides and particle sizes. Results suggest potential use in pre-treatment to reduce pollutant loads before the primary treatment of leachate. The study underscores the potential of incineration ashes to enhance leachate treatment and reduce the environmental impact of improper disposal.

Transformation behavior of heavy metal during Co-thermal treatment of hazardous waste incineration fly ash and slag/electroplating sludge

In this study, the behavior of heavy metal transformation during the co-thermal treatment of hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWIFA) and Fe-containing hazardous waste (including hazardous waste incineration bottom slag (HWIBS) and electroplating sludge (ES)) was investigated. The findings demonstrated that such a treatment effectively reduced the static leaching toxicity of Cr and Pb. Moreover, when the treatment temperature exceeded 1000 °C, the co-thermal treated sample exhibited low concentrations of dynamically leached Cr, Pb, and Zn, indicating that these heavy metals were successful detoxified. Thermodynamic analyses and phase transformation results suggested that the formation of spinel and the gradual disappearance of chromium dioxide in the presence of Fe-containing hazardous wastes contributed to the solidification of chromium. Additionally, the efficient detoxification of Pb and Zn was attributed to their volatilization and entry into the liquid phase during the co-thermal treatment process. Therefore, this study sets an excellent example of the co-thermal treatment of hazardous wastes and the control of heavy metal pollution during the treatment process.

Feasibility Analysis of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration for Harmless Treatment of Potentially Virulent Waste

The outbreak of major health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has posed numerous challenges to waste management. Environmentally sound treatment of such epidemic-related municipal solid waste (MSW) plays a vital role in interrupting virus transmission. In this study, the furnace type, incineration process and control parameters of an MSW incinerator were comparatively analyzed with those of a medical waste incinerator and hazardous waste incinerator according to China’s MSW incineration pollution control standards. In addition, changes in flue gas emissions data before, during and after the outbreak of the pandemic were empirically analyzed. The study revealed the following: (1) the feasibility of MSW incinerators to meet the harmless disposal of potentially viral municipal solid waste (PVMSW); (2) the priority order of incinerator types for MSW incinerators in the disposal of potentially virulent waste was grate furnace incinerator > fluidized bed incinerator > cement kiln; and (3) when MSW incinerators treated PVMSW, the emissions of dioxin compounds in the flue gas fluctuated between 0.00052 and 0.031 ng TEQ/m3, HCl emissions fluctuated between 1.6 and 23.742 mg/m3, CO emissions fluctuated between 0.18 and 59.15 mg/m3, heavy metal emissions fluctuated between 0.000008 and 0.855 mg/m3, and particulate matter emissions fluctuated between 0.64 and 12.13 mg/m3. All emissions met the flue gas emission standards. This study verified the feasibility of using MSW incinerators to treat PVMSW during a sudden major pandemic and provided a theoretical basis for the environmentally sound collaborative treatment of PVMSW and a reference for the emergency management and sustainable development of MSW.

Power Generation from Utilizing Thermal Energy of Hazardous Waste Incinerators

A large amount of thermal energy is generated from burning hazardous chemical wastes, and the temperature of the flue gases in hazardous waste incinerators reaches up to (1200 °C). The flue gases are cooled to (40°C) and are treated before emission. This thermal energy can be utilized to produce electrical power by designing a system suitable for dangerous flue gases in the future depending on the results of much research about using a proto-type small steam power plant that uses safe fuel to study and develop the electricity generation process with water tube boiler which is manufactured experimentally with theoretical development for some of its parts which are inefficient in experimental work. The studied system generates theoretically (120 kg steam /h at 8 bars) with dry wood as fuel and preheating for the air of combustion and feed water and a diesel engine of (8 hp) four-stroke with single piston converted to steam engine coupled with the electrical generator of (3 kVA). The results are compared with practical values valid in the literature about small power plants of steam capacity (0.1-1) ton/h and operating pressure up to 10 bars. Experimentally, the generated electrical power is little and sufficient to operate a small fan and lump. The current converted steam engine is better than a conventional steam engine in auto lubrication with some operational problems. The boiler efficiency is 63.28%.

IDENTIFICATION SOURCES OF EMISSION PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN UKRAINE AND WAYS TO REDUCE EMISSIONS FROM THE MOST PROBLEMATIC SOURCES

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) belong to a group of toxicants, which, due to their extremely dangerous impact on human health, is regulated by a special international agreement — the Stockholm Convention on POPs. Each Party to the Convention must develop and consistently update the National Implementation Plan for the requirements of this Convention. Ukraine developed a National Implementation Plan in 2007. Today, the plan needs to be revised and supplemented, taking into account the changes that have occurred in the structure of sources and volumes of POP emissions. During the time that has passed since the development of the first edition of the National Plan, new approaches have appeared to prevent the emission of POPs. The article contains the results of an expert analysis of changes in the volume and structure of POP emission sources in the world and in Ukraine. Calculations of POPs emissions, made according to the UNEP methodology, showed that the largest sources of POPs emissions in Ukraine are: sintering production and electric arc smelting of steel in ferrous metallurgy; production of thermal and electrical energy from biomass in the energy industry; incineration of solid household and hazardous waste. For the most problematic sources of POP emissions, the most promising methods and practices for preventing the formation and removal of POPs from the products of technological process have been determined. Co-disposal of hazardous waste incineration fly ash and bottom ash through alkaline-activation: Effects of added CaO on solidification of heavy metals

Hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HFA) and bottom ash (HBA) are considered hazardous due to their high concentrations of heavy metals, which drew much attention about their safe disposal. Geopolymers have emerged as promising materials for solidifying heavy metals. With HBA having relatively high content of aluminosilicates, it presents a potential opportunity to convert both HFA and HBA into geopolymer through alkali activation, thus effectively solidifying heavy metals. However, HBA is often regarded as having lower reactivity, necessitating the addition of reactive calcium (Ca) to enhance alkali activation. In this study, we investigated the impact of incorporating a small amount of CaO on heavy metal solidification in geopolymer. The results demonstrate that the addition of CaO can effectively reduce the leaching concentration of heavy metals in geopolymer when the HBA content exceeds 40 wt% and meets the limits specified by the Chinese standard (GB18598–2019). Characterization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and micromeritics instrument corp (MIP) reveals that the addition of CaO reduces the porosity of the geopolymer from 23.59 % to 14.30 %, and resulted in a more uniform distribution of hydration products on the particle surface. This enhanced distribution contributes to a stronger encapsulation effect, effectively enveloping and sealing heavy metal ions within HFA and HBA particles. Consequently, the geopolymer incorporating CaO in the HFA and HBA mixture is deemed suitable for the safe treatment mandated by GB18598–2019. This study offers valuable insights for the comprehensive disposal of these hazardous waste types.

Composition modification and plasma vitrification of bottom ash from industrial hazardous waste incineration

Industrial hazardous waste (IHW) incineration bottom ash (BA) contains high-content acidic oxides and a limited amount of basic oxides. This contributes to the vitrification of the BA sample, although it causes a high melting temperature and viscosity. Unfortunately, basic fluxing agents play a negative role in the durability of glassy slag. Hence, the industrial BA melting process requires a comprehensive and accurate composition modification method. In this study, the basicity, complete liquid phase temperature, and viscosity-temperature performance of a BA sample were investigated. The BA sample was melted using a thermal plasma system. Furthermore, environmental sound quality analysis was performed, including the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and acid loss rate. The results indicate that the BA sample may be directly vitrified, although the melting temperature and viscosity need to be modified. Comprehensively, it was found that 15% CaO addition is the most suitable choice. The BA composition modification sample melted completely, slagging smoothly, transformed mostly to the vitrification state, and the index values of the environmental sound quality analysis were dramatically reduced. It has been proven that appropriate composition modification can not only guarantee the stable BA melting process but also favor the vitrification and solidification of heavy metals.

Insight into the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in hazardous waste incineration and incinerators: Formation process and reduction strategy

Incineration technology has been widely adopted to safely dispose of hazardous waste (HW). While the incineration process causes the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Due to its extreme toxicity, many scholars have been committed to determining the PCDD/F formation process and reducing emissions in incinerators. Previous studies ignored the impact of incineration and fluctuation of feeding materials on PCDD/F formation in hazardous waste incinerators (HWIs). In this study, differences in PCDD/F formation between HWIs and municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) were pointed out. The incineration section in HWIs should be carefully considered. Laboratory experiments, conventional analysis and thermogravimetry experiments were conducted. An obvious disparity of PCDD/F formation between 12 kinds of HWs was found. Distillation residue was found with remarkably higher PCDD/F concentrations (11.57 ng/g). Except for the Cl content, aromatic rings and C–O bond organics were also found with high correlation coefficients with PCDD/F concentrations (>0.92). And PCDD/Fs were formed through a chlorination process and structure formation process. All of these are helpful to further understand the PCDD/F formation process during HW incineration, optimize the operation conditions in HWIs and reduce the emission pressure of PCDD/Fs in the future.

Fabrication and performance analysis of sustainable municipal solid waste incineration fly ash alkali-activated acoustic barriers

Abstract The recycling of hazardous municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is drawing more attention, in which the alkali-activation technique may provide great potential to make full use of it as sustainable acoustic materials. The present work evaluated the applicability of alkali-activated MSWIFA-based materials (AAFMs) as porous acoustic barriers. The chemical composition and microtomography of the as-prepared AAFMs were characterized by X-ray diffraction. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. With the incorporation of MSWIFA and foaming agents, the dry bulk density and porosity of AAFMs were subsequently examined. Moreover, the compressibility and leachability of AAFMs were also investigated to evaluate their mechanical performance and environmental safety as construction materials. A sound absorption test was eventually conducted to explore the sound absorption performance of AAFMs, considering the main factors such as aluminum addition, MSWIFA dosage, and sample thickness. The results verified the good chemical stability, leachability, and sound absorption performance of porous AAFMs. Specifically, it indicated that the aforementioned factors have a boosting effect on forming highly porous structures that improve sound absorption performance, namely sound absorption coefficient and noise reduction coefficient.

Research on the Flow Parameters of Waste Motion in a Rotary Kiln with the Use of the Tracer Method.

The motion of input material in a rotary kiln is an important aspect of its operation. This can be observed especially in the case of the implementation of the hazardous waste incineration process in this device. The values of the flow parameters, mainly the residence time and the degree of mixing, can determine the proper and safe treatment of waste. The relationships that occur in the layer of solid material in a rotary kiln have not been completely recognized. This article presents a research method that involves an experiment on a laboratory stand simulating a rotary kiln in association with a dedicated algorithm. Multi-criteria tests were carried out. The adopted research method was the tracer method. It used a tracer which, subject to the same transport conditions as other material particles, provided information on the characteristic of the motion of tested materials in the rotating cylinder. The application based on the residence time distribution (RTD) algorithm returned information about the characteristics of the motion of the material in the rotary cylinder in terms of residence time distribution and the degree of mixing. This tracer method, together with stimulus impulses on the grate and a dedicated RTD algorithm, was used here as a sensor method to examine the characteristics of material motion on various grate systems. The data obtained as a result of this research may include, among others, the boundary conditions for numerical simulations of processes carried out in a rotary kiln.

Chemical Speciation Distribution and Thermal Stability of Heavy Metals along Flue Gas Cleaning Systems in a Hazardous Waste Incinerator

Hazardous heavy metals may release from incineration residues in the utilization concerning heat treatment or landfills, which would cause great harm on the environment. The evaluation of chemical speciation and thermal stability of heavy metals are of great significance for the control of heavy metal pollution during heat treatments. In this study, chemical speciation distribution and thermal stability of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Se, Zn, and Hg) along flue gas cleaning systems were investigated in a hazardous waste incinerator located in Zhejiang, China. The chemical speciation and thermal stability of heavy metals, environmental risk evaluation, and morphological and mineralogical characteristics of incineration residues were assessed before and after heat treatments. Results indicated that the chemical speciation of heavy metals in the bottom slag, burn-out chamber ash, boiler ash, and bag filter ash varied significantly. The thermal stability of heavy metals in the incineration residues was significantly influenced by chemical speciation, and the thermal stability of the chemical speciation decreased basically in the order of residual form > reducible form > oxidizable form > acid soluble form. As, Cr, and Se showed high thermal stability due to the fact that they were involved in the crystallization reaction, and heat treatment would promote the transformation from mobile fractions into the residual fraction. Hg and Cd displayed the worst thermal stability, and high-temperature heat treatment would contribute to secondary volatilization from the incineration residues. More attention should be paid to the secondary volatilization of Hg and Cd during thermal disposal. Cu, Pb, and Zn had moderate thermal stability, and heat treatment would cause the volatilization of mobile fractions and the transformation from mobile fractions into the residual fraction. Pretreatments such as water-washing or adding a chemical stabilizer would be conducive to reducing the volatilization of heavy metals during thermal disposal.

PFAS soil concentrations surrounding a hazardous waste incinerator in East Liverpool, Ohio, an environmental justice community.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of synthetic compounds widely used in industrial and consumer products. While PFAS provide product durability, these chemicals are ubiquitous, persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic. These characteristics make the ultimate disposal of PFAS a challenge. One current disposal method is incineration; however, little research has been conducted on the safety and effectiveness of PFAS incineration. The characteristics of communities with hazardous waste incinerators that have received PFAS shipments indicate that more individuals with lower incomes and individuals with less education than the US average are at higher risk of exposure, which presents important environmental justice and health equity concerns of PFAS incineration. Situated in eastern Ohio, East Liverpool is an Appalachian community that is home to a large hazardous-waste incinerator, operated by Heritage WTI, that began accepting PFAS in 2019. Residents are concerned that the disposal lacks the research necessary to assure safety for the residents. Due to both community interest and data gaps regarding PFAS incineration, our research team conducted a pilot study to examine the distribution and concentration of PFAS in soil samples surrounding the incinerator. All 35 soil samples had measurable amounts of PFAS including perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA)/GenX. PFOS was measured in the majority of soil samples (97%) with a range of 50-8,300ng/kg. PFOA was measured in 94% of soil samples with a range of 51ng/kg to 1300ng/kg. HFPO-DA/GenX was measurable in 12 soil samples with concentrations of ranging from 150ng/kg to 1500ng/kg. Further research on PFAS disposal will advance knowledge and action related to regulatory requirements and exposure prevention, ultimately improving individual and community protections and health equity.
