Controlled trial of the effect of negative dietary cation-anion difference on postpartum health of dairy cows

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) dry cow diets on postpartum health. Cows from 4 commercial dairy farms in Ontario, Canada, were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm), with cows 3 wk before expected calving, were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD [TRT; -108 mEq/kg of dry matter (DM); target urine pH 6.0-6.5] or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of DM with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period) then switched to the other treatment for the next period, with 4 periods per farm. Urine pH was measured weekly until calving, and body condition score (BCS) was measured at enrollment and at 5 wk postpartum. Data from 15 experimental units [8 TRT and 7 CON, with 1,086 (TRT: n = 681; CON: n = 405) observational units (cows)] that received the assigned diet for >1 wk were included. The incidence of milk fever (MF), retained placenta (RP), metritis, hyperketonemia (blood β-hydroxybutyrate >1.2 mmol/L, measured weekly in wk 1 and 2), clinical mastitis within 30 DIM (MAST), displaced abomasum (DA) within 30 d in milk (DIM), purulent vaginal discharge (PVD, assessed once at wk 5), and number of disease events (≥1 or ≥2) were analyzed with logistic regression models with treatment, parity, BCS, and their interactions, accounting for pen-level randomization and clustering of animals within farm with random effects, giving 10 degrees of freedom to test treatment effects. Multiparous cows fed TRT had greater blood calcium between 1 and 4 DIM than multiparous cows fed CON, and the prevalence of subclinical hypocalcemia (total Ca ≤2.14 mmol/L) was lesser when fed TRT compared with CON (d 1: 73 ± 6% vs. 93 ± 4%; d 2: 65 ± 7% vs. 90 ± 5%), with no differences between treatments detected in primiparous cows. We detected interactions of treatment and BCS at enrollment for MF in multiparous cows and of treatment and parity for ≥2 disease events. Overconditioned (BCS ≥3.75) multiparous cows had reduced incidence of MF when fed TRT (TRT: 2 ± 1%, vs. CON: 13 ± 8%). We detected no treatment effects on RP, metritis, hyperketonemia, or PVD incidence. Cows fed TRT had lesser incidence of DA (1.7 ± 0.7% vs. 3.6 ± 1.6%) and tended to have lesser incidence of MAST compared with CON (1.8% ± 0.6% vs. 4.4 ± 1.4%). No treatment effect was detected on ≥1 disease events (TRT: 38 ± 7%, vs. CON: 42 ± 8%); however, multiparous cows on TRT were less likely to have ≥2 disease events than cows on CON (14 ± 4% vs. 23 ± 6%). Under commercial herd conditions, feeding prepartum diets with negative DCAD improved several measures of postpartum health.

Risk factors for displaced abomasum or ketosis in Swedish dairy herds

Risk factors associated with high or low long-term incidence of displaced abomasum (DA) or clinical ketosis were studied in 60 Swedish dairy herds, using multivariable logistic regression modelling. Forty high-incidence herds were included as cases and 20 low-incidence herds as controls. Incidence rates were calculated based on veterinary records of clinical diagnoses. During the 3-year period preceding the herd classification, herds with a high incidence had a disease incidence of DA or clinical ketosis above the 3rd quartile in a national database for disease recordings. Control herds had no cows with DA or clinical ketosis. All herds were visited during the housing period and herdsmen were interviewed about management routines, housing, feeding, milk yield, and herd health. Target groups were heifers in late gestation, dry cows, and cows in early lactation. Univariable logistic regression was used to screen for factors associated with being a high-incidence herd. A multivariable logistic regression model was built using stepwise regression. A higher maximum daily milk yield in multiparous cows and a large herd size (p=0.054 and p=0.066, respectively) tended to be associated with being a high-incidence herd. Not cleaning the heifer feeding platform daily increased the odds of having a high-incidence herd twelvefold (p<0.01). Keeping cows in only one group in the dry period increased the odds of having a high incidence herd eightfold (p=0.03). Herd size was confounded with housing system. Housing system was therefore added to the final logistic regression model. In conclusion, a large herd size, a high maximum daily milk yield, keeping dry cows in one group, and not cleaning the feeding platform daily appear to be important risk factors for a high incidence of DA or clinical ketosis in Swedish dairy herds. These results confirm the importance of housing, management and feeding in the prevention of metabolic disorders in dairy cows around parturition and in early lactation.

Blood profiles in dairy cows with displaced abomasum

An observational study was carried out in Swedish dairy herds to investigate differences between cows with and without displaced abomasum (DA), in concentrations of glucose, insulin, fructosamine, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate, cholesterol, haptoglobin, increased enzyme activity of aspartate aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase, and the revised Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (RQUICKI). A secondary aim was to study how blood profiles for DA cows vary with time in relation to calving. Sixty-nine DA cows within 2 to 56 d postpartum, in 60 herds, were clinically examined and blood samples were drawn at the time DA was diagnosed. At the same time, 104 healthy control cows matched by herd and stage of lactation were also sampled. The blood parameters were studied using mixed linear models, including herd as a random effect, and DA (case or control), parity, breed, sampling time in relation to calving, other diseases, and the interaction between DA and time as fixed effects. Concentrations were higher in DA cows than in control cows for NEFA (least squares means 1.36 vs. 0.34 mmol/L), β-hydroxybutyrate (1.56 vs. 0.90 mmol/L), aspartate aminotransferase (1.96 vs. 0.97 μkat/L), glutamate dehydrogenase (197 vs. 78 μkat/L), and haptoglobin (0.76 vs. 0.17g/L), whereas concentrations were lower in DA cows than in control cows for insulin (3.61 vs. 8.48 mU/L) and cholesterol (3.04 vs. 3.75 mmol/L). Glucose (2.83 vs. 2.79 mmol/L) and fructosamine (266 vs. 252 μmol/L) concentrations were similar in both groups; however, a tendency toward lower RQUICKI values (0.42 vs. 0.46) in the DA cows was found, indicating reduced insulin sensitivity. For most blood parameters, differences between DA cows and controls remained constant over time. Seventy-two percent of the DA cows had at least one other disease in the period from 1 wk antepartum to 1 wk after the DA was diagnosed. Haptoglobin could potentially be used to detect treatable infectious or inflammatory conditions in the early postpartum period, possibly reducing the incidence of DA. Consequently, there were major changes in blood profiles in cows with DA compared with healthy control cows, indicating a negative energy balance, liver cell damage, and an inflammatory response. The results contribute to an understanding of the metabolic changes in DA cows.

Effects of management, feeding, and treatment on clinical and biochemical variables in cattle with displaced abomasum

To determine effects of management, feeding, and treatment on clinical and biochemical variables in cows with displaced abomasum (DA). 374 cows that received 470 treatments for DA. Blood and milk samples were obtained from 139 affected cows for analysis; for all cows, clinical data, management, feeding, and treatments were evaluated. Multiparous cows were more predisposed to DA than primiparous cows were, and Swedish Friesians were more predisposed than Swedish Red and Whites were. Eighty percent of cows had left-sided DA, and 20% had right-sided DA. In > 50% of affected cows, clinical signs appeared just before calving to 2 weeks after calving. Incidence of twin calves and periparturient diseases was significantly higher in affected cows than in the overall Swedish cow population. Content of neutral detergent fiber in the silage was low in herds with DA. Feeding a total mixed ration was a risk factor for DA. Treatment by surgical methods gave a significantly higher recovery rate than nonsurgical methods. Displaced abomasum is a periparturient nutritional disease. Feeding roughage with low neutral detergent content is a more important causative factor than the amount of concentrates fed at the time of calving. The basic principle for prevention of DA is to maintain good ruminal filling before and at calving. The amount of high-quality roughage fed before and at calving should be kept to a minimum. By changing routines for periparturient feeding, it should be possible to reduce the incidence of DA.
