Application of waste eggshells elevates phytoremediation efficiency of Pb-Zn mine-contaminated farmland and mitigates soil greenhouse gas emissions: A field study

Remediating heavy metal (HM)-contaminated farmlands and sequestering soil carbon for emission reduction have been prominent topics in environmental research in recent years. However, few studies have looked into the soil greenhouse gas (GHG) impacts of growing hyperaccumulators in composite HM-contaminated farmland, as well as agronomic measures to remediate soil HMs while mitigating GHG emissions. To investigate fertilization measures to improve phytoremediation efficiency and mitigate GHG emissions, S. photeinocarpum was planted with three different fertilization measures on farmland contaminated by lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) mines (1200 kg ha−1 eggshell, 125 kg ha−1 28-homobrassinolide, and 16.7 kg ha−1 mineral potassium fulvic acid) during its growth period. The findings are as follows: Eggshell application significantly enhanced the translocation factor (TF) of Pb, Zn, and cadmium (Cd) from the roots to the shoots of Solanum photeinocarpum. Moreover, eggshells notably increased the bioaccumulation factor (BCF) of Cd and Pb in plant shoots by 120.75% and 159.09%, respectively. Regarding GHG emissions, the combined application of eggshells and 28-homobrassinolide substantially lowered the global warming potential (GWP) of the soil. Correlation analyses revealed that eggshell application increased the relative abundance of the Gemmatimonadota bacterial phylum in the soil, facilitating Pb and Cd migration from the roots to shoot tissues in S. photeinocarpum. Eggshell use inhibited nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) transformation into nitrous oxide (N2O) by the Myxococcota bacterial phylum and reduced N2O release from the soil. The application of low-cost eggshells can achieve a win-win situation of soil HM remediation and GHG emission reduction, as well as provide simple and scalable management measures for HM-contaminated farmland.

High-affinity potassium transporter TaHAK1 implicates in cesium tolerance and phytoremediation

Cesium (Cs) is a toxic alkaline metal affecting human health. Plant high-affinity K transporters (HAKs) involved in Cs uptake and transport have been identified in several plants. However, the molecular regulatory mechanisms of Cs uptake and transport, and homeostasis between Cs and K by HAKs remain unknown. In this study, TaHAK1 was overexpressed in rice (TaHAK1-OEs) to evaluate Cs absorption capacity and the Cs and K homeostasis mechanisms. Results showed that TaHAK1 promoted seedling growth by fixing Cs in the root cell wall and modifying Cs distribution. Transcriptome and bioinformatics analyses revealed that 37,828 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly induced in TaHAK1-OEs, of which the pathways involved in cell wall biosynthesis and ion absorption transport were notably affected including genes, XTHs, CSLEs, HAKs, and ABCs. Moreover, under Cs-contaminated soil, TaHAK1-OEs exhibited improved Cs tolerance by decreasing Cs accumulation and increasing K content in different tissues, particularly in the grains, indicating that TaHAK1 acts as a candidate gene for screening genetic modification of Cs phytoremediation and developing low-Cs-accumulation rice varieties. This study provides new insights into the uptake and translocation of Cs and the homeostasis of Cs and K in plants, and also supplies new strategy to improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Enhancing cadmium phytoremediation in contaminated soil using sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) with EDTA and vermicompost amendments

The study hypothesis posits that EDTA, an effective chelating agent, can effectively mobilize cadmium from soil, augmenting the sunflower's natural ability to absorb and sequester heavy metals. Concurrently, vermicompost, rich in organic matter and beneficial microorganisms, enhances soil health and supports plant growth, thereby fortifying the sunflower's phytoremediative potential. The pot experiment was carried out as an overall completely randomized design (CRD) at the Sheila Dhar Institute (SDI) experimental farm, University of Allahabad, Prayagraj, in the Kharif season during the years 2023-2024. Plants were cultivated in pots with soil (5 kg) that contained varying concentrations of Cd (0, 15, 30, and 50 mg/kg), vermicompost (0 and 10 g/kg), and EDTA (0 and 2.5 mmol/kg). Plants were also cultivated in containers with clean soil (T1) as control treatment. For analyzed heavy metal (Cd) in plants with a tri-acid mixture (15 ml) containing concentrations of HNO3, H2SO4, and HClO4 in 5:1:2 ratios, use the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The result showed that the combined Treatment (T3) pot of application of Cd 0+ EDTA (2.5 mmol/kg) and vermicompost (10 g/kg) was the maximum dry biomass (14.43 g/pot) of the sunflower plant. While the maximum dose combined treatment (T12) application of Cd 50 mg/kg+ EDTA 2.5 mmol/kg and vermicompost 10 g/kg is greater than before, the maximum accumulation of Cd in the shoot and root of Helianthus annuus L. by shoot 37.16% and root 31.16%, respectively as compared to the control treatment pot Cd-50. The results indicate that the combined application of EDTA and vermicompost significantly increased cadmium uptake by sunflowers compared to untreated controls, demonstrating their synergistic effect in improving phytoremediation efficiency.

Metal accumulation in cattails cultured in soils flooded with artificial wastewater of varying pH and different levels of metals (Cr, Cd and Zn)

Toxic metals cause risks to the ecological environment. Typha latifolia L. is a good candidate to clean potentially toxic metals contaminated water or soil. However, limited research investigated the impact of environmental factors (e.g., pH, soil substrate, flood duration) on metal accumulations in cattails. In this study, cattails were cultured in soils flooded with artificial wastewater with varying pH (5, 7 or 9) and different levels of Cr, Cd and Zn for four weeks to investigate the interactions between environmental conditions and metal uptake in cattails. The metal content in biomass were measured by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer. More Zn (>10,000 mg/kg dry biomass) entered plants compared to Cd and Cr (<1,000 mg/kg dry biomass). Approximately 80% of Zn from solutions with 50 mg/L Cd, 25 mg/L Cr, 250 mg/L Zn were removed by cattails. Most Cd and Cr were sorbed onto soils. Cattails exhibited relatively consistent performance in removing metals from wastewater with initial pH of 5, 7 or 9. The pH of all the solutions ended close to neutral after 4 weeks. More research is needed to further understand the influence of environmental conditions on metal uptakes in plants to improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Foliar-selenium enhances plant growth and arsenic accumulation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata: Critical roles of GSH-GSSG cycle and arsenite antiporters PvACR3

It is known that selenium (Se) enhances plant growth and arsenic (As) accumulation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata, but the associated mechanisms are unclear. In this study, P. vittata was exposed to 50 μM arsenate (AsV) under hydroponics plus 25 or 50 μM foliar selenate. After 3-weeks of growth, the plant biomass, As and Se contents, As speciation, malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH and GSSG) levels, and important genes related to As-metabolism in P. vittata were determined. Foliar-Se increased plant biomass by 17 − 30 %, possibly due to 9.1 − 19 % reduction in MDA content compared to the As control. Further, foliar-Se enhanced the As contents by 1.9–3.5 folds and increased arsenite (AsIII) contents by 64 − 136 % in the fronds. The increased AsV reduction to AsIII was attributed to 60 − 131 % increase in glutathione peroxidase activity, which mediates GSH oxidation to GSSG (8.8 −29 % increase) in the fronds. Further, foliar-Se increased the expression of AsIII antiporters PvACR3;1–3;3 by 1.6 − 2.1 folds but had no impact on phosphate transporters PvPht1 or arsenate reductases PvHAC1/2. Our results indicate that foliar-Se effectively enhances plant growth and arsenic accumulation by promoting the GSH-GSSG cycle and upregulating gene expression of AsIII antiporters, which are responsible for AsIII translocation from the roots to fronds and AsIII sequestration into the fronds. The data indicate that foliar-Se can effectively improve phytoremediation efficiency of P. vittata in As-contaminated soils.

Natural solution for the remediation of multi-metal contamination: application of natural amino acids, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Micrococcus yunnanensis to increase the phytoremediation efficiency

Natural amino acids (NAA) have been rarely investigated as chelators, despite their ability to chelate heavy metals (HMs). In the present research, the effects of extracted natural amino acids, as a natural and environmentally friendly chelate agent and the inoculation of Pseudomonas fluorescens (PF) and Micrococcus yunnanensis (MY) bacteria were investigated on some responses of quinoa in a soil polluted with Pb, Ni, Cd, and Zn. Inoculation of PGPR bacteria enhanced plant growth and phytoremediation efficiency. Pb and Cd were higher in quinoa roots, while Ni and Zn were higher in the shoots. The highest efficiencies were observed with NAA treatment and simultaneous inoculation of PF and MY bacteria for Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The highest values of phytoremediation efficiency and uptake efficiency of Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn were 21.28, 19.11, 14.96 and 18.99 μg g−1, and 31.52, 60.78, 51.89, and 25.33 μg g−1, respectively. Results of present study well demonstrated NAA extracted from blood powder acted as strong chelate agent due to their diversity in size, solubilizing ability, abundant functional groups, and potential in the formation of stable complexes with Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn, increasing metal availability in soil and improving phytoremediation efficiency in quinoa.

Insight into the mechanisms of plant growth promoting strain ZY2 in improving phytoremediation efficiency in perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-contaminated soil

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an anthropogenic perfluorinated alkyl substance which can enter the food chain and pose health risks. The hydrophilic carboxyl head of PFOA enhances its solubility in water, making it easier for PFOA to migrate with soil water and be absorbed by plants from the soil. Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR) have the ability to compensate for plant growth disadvantage under unfavorable conditions and are therefore likely to reduce the negative effects of PFOA phytotoxicity on plant growth. However, the effectiveness of the PGPR-assisted plant systems for remediation of PFOA-contaminated soil has not yet been demonstrated. To this end, a novel strain of Rhizobium sp. was isolated and named as ZY2, which is tolerant to PFOA and exhibits significant plant growth-promoting trains. The results indicated that inoculation with strain ZY2 significantly increased the biomass of oilseed rape. Notably, the accumulation content of PFOA in oilseed rape roots increased significantly by 89.0 % and the removal of PFOA from the soil increased over 3 times after inoculation with ZY2. In addition, inoculated ZY2 also altered the rhizosphere soil bacterial community structure which might correlate with the production of a series of hydrolases and reductases involved in soil carbon and nitrogen cycling processes. Generally, this study offered a novel approach for establishing an effective phytoremediation system in PFOA-contaminated soil.

Physiological and transcriptome characterization provide new sights into cadmium tolerance and accumulation mechanisms in Tagetes patula L.

Tagetes patula L. (T. patula) is a Cd hyperaccumulator plant with high ornamental value and strong resistance. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of Cd tolerance in hyper-accumulating plants is important for improving phytoremediation efficiency. This investigation studied to how Cd affected T. patula's physiological characteristics and molecular alterations. With the increase of Cd concentration, chlorophyll content, and root biomass decreased; the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as GST, SOD and POD increased. Initially, Cd accumulated mainly in the root and then transferred upward to the leaves. The molecular mechanisms of T. patula after 150 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg treatments were analyzed by transcriptome. In total, 5429 and 6546 differentially expressed unigenes were identified. Phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and phenylalanine metabolism were identified as key pathways in reaction to Cd stress. In addition, many differential genes involved in the response to Cd stress were identified, including heavy metal transporter protein genes, genes and transcription factors related to Cd detoxification. These results indicate that the response of T. patula to Cd was multifaceted, laying the foundation for studies to improve its tolerance to toxic metals.

Transcriptomic and physiological analyses of Symphytum officinale L. in response to multiple heavy metal stress

Soil heavy metal contamination has become a global environmental issue, which threaten soil quality, food security and human health. Symphytum officinale L. have exhibited high tolerance and restoration capacity to heavy metals (HMs) stress. However, little is known about the mechanisms of HMs in S. officinale. In this study, transcriptomic and physiological changes of S. officinale response to different HMs (Pb, Cd and Zn) were analyzed and investigated the key genes and pathways involved in HMs uptake patterns. The results showed that phenotypic effects are not significant, and antioxidant enzyme activities were all upregulated. Transcriptome analysis indicated that 1247 differential genes were up-regulated, and 1963 differential genes were down-regulated under Cd stress, while 3752 differential genes were up-regulated, and 7197 differential genes were down-regulated under Pb stress; and 527 differential genes were up-regulated; and 722 differential genes were down-regulated under Zn stress. Based on their expression, we preliminarily speculate that different HMs resistance of S. officinale may be regulated by the differential expression of key genes. These results provide a theoretical basis for determining the exact expression of genes in plants under different heavy metal stress, the processes involved molecular pathways, and how they can be efficiently utilized to improve plant tolerance to toxic metals and improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Recent Advances in Phytoremediation of Hazardous Substances using Plants: A Tool for Soil Reclamation and Sustainability

Phytoremediation techniques have emerged as a promising approach for soil reclamation and remediation of contaminated sites. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of the different phytoremediation techniques used for soil reclamation and their effectiveness in removing contaminants from soil. The aim is to evaluate the current state of knowledge and to highlight potential avenues for future research in this field. The review begins with a discussion of the principles underlying phytoremediation, emphasizing the ability of plants to accumulate, tolerate, and detoxify contaminants through various mechanisms such as phytoaccumulation, rhizo-degradation, and rhizo-filtration. Different plant species and their suitability for phytoremediation are reviewed, considering factors such as metal tolerance, biomass production, and pollutant uptake efficiency. In addition, the role of soil amendments and their impact on improving phytoremediation efficiency is critically evaluated. Commonly used amendments, including chelating agents, organic matter, and pH adjusters, are reviewed with emphasis on their ability to increase metal bioavailability and plant uptake. The review also addresses challenges associated with phytoremediation, such as plant growth limitations, long-term sustainability, and potential risks associated with the release of pollutants into the atmosphere during biomass disposal. Strategies to mitigate these challenges, including plant breeding and genetic engineering, are discussed.

Stimulating the efficiency of Cd-phytoremediation from contaminated soils by Solanum nigrum L.: Effect of foliar and soil application of yeast extract

Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum L.) is an annual grass and is known as a Cd-hyperaccumulator. The current study aims to use a natural biostimulant, i.e., yeast extract, to improve the phytoremediation capacity of S. nigrum in a pot experiment. S. nigrum was cultivated in a Cd-contaminated soil and treated with yeast extract (20% w/v) via soil or foliar application. The experiment included four treatments: control (C), yeast extract applied via soil (S), yeast extract applied via foliar spraying (F), and yeast extract applied via soil and foliar application (SF). The treatments of yeast extract were laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with six replicates. The plants of S. nigrum sprayed with yeast extract in combination with soil addition had the highest significant values of Cd in the plant shoot. The addition of yeast extract significantly increased the phytoremediation indexes compared to the control. The addition of yeast extract to the soil or via foliar spraying significantly enhanced the translocation factor (TF) and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of Cd in S. nigrum plants. The combined addition of soil and foliar spraying of yeast extract (SF) was more effective than the sole addition of S or F in increasing the TF and BAF of Cd by S. nigrum. The addition of SF increased both the TF and BAF by 50% above the control. The yeast extract significantly enhanced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD). The combined addition of SF was more effective in enhancing the concentrations of proline and soluble carbohydrates in the plant leaves than the sole addition of each treatment. The maximum nutrient uptake and photosynthesis pigments, i. e., chlorophyll, were achieved from the addition of yeast extract to the soil in combination with foliar spraying. The yeast extract improved S. nigrum's Cd-phytoextraction capacity by protecting photosynthesis pigments and increasing antioxidant defenses and plant nutrient uptake. S. nigrum plants have many characteristics that qualify them for use in cleaning Cd-contaminated soils. However, it is recommended that yeast extract be sprinkled on the leaves and added directly to the soil to improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria isolated from earthworms enhance spinach growth and its phytoremediation potential in metal-contaminated soils.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of metal-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) isolated from the chloragogenous tissue of Aporrectodea molleri, which represents a unique habitat. Our objectives were to investigate their effects on the growth of Spinacia oleracea under heavy metal stress and assess their potential for enhancing phytoremediation capabilities. The experiment was conducted in an alkaline soil contaminated with 7 mg kg-1 of cadmium, 100 mg kg-1 of nickel, 150 mg kg-1 of copper, 300 mg kg-1 of Zinc, and mg kg-1 of 600 Manganese. The results showed that heavy metal stress considerably diminished root (42.8%) and shoot length (60.1%), biomass (80%), chlorophyll content (41%), soil alkaline (45%), and acid (51%) phosphatases (42%) and urease (42%). However, soil inoculation with bacterial isolates remarkably improved plant growth. Soil bioaugmentation increased spinach growth (up to 74.5% for root length, up to 106.3% for shoot length, and up to 5.5 folds for fresh biomass) while significantly increasing soil enzyme activity and NPK content. Multivariate data analysis indicated that soil inoculation with Bacillus circulans TC7 promoted plant growth while limiting metal bioaccumulation, whereas Pseudomonas sp. TC33 and Bacillus subtilis TC34 increased metal bioaccumulation in spinach tissues while minimizing their toxicity. Our study confirms that earthworms are a reservoir of multi-beneficial bacteria that can effectively improve phytoremediation efficiency and mitigate the toxic effects of heavy metals on plant growth. Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term effects and feasibility of using these isolates as a consortium in field applications.

Physiological response mechanism of alfalfa seedlings roots to typical explosive cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX)

This study explored the physiological response mechanism of alfalfa seedlings roots to a typical explosive, cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), so as to improve the efficiency of phytoremediation. The response of plants to different levels of RDX were analyzed from the perspectives of mineral nutrition and metabolic networks. Exposure to RDX at 10–40 mg L−1 had no significant effect on root morphology, but the plant roots significantly accumulated RDX in solution (17.6–40.9%). A 40 mg L−1 RDX exposure induced cell gap expansion and disrupted root mineral metabolism, The key response elements, P, Cu, and Mg, were significantly increased by 1.60–1.66, 1.74–1.90, and 1.85–2.50 times, respectively. The 40 mg L−1 RDX exposure also significantly disturbed root basal metabolism, resulting in a total of 197 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs). The main response metabolites were lipids and lipid-like molecules, and the key physiological response pathways were arginine biosynthesis and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis. A total of 19 DEMs in root metabolic pathways, including L-arginine, L-asparagine, and ornithine, were significantly responsive to RDX exposure. The physiological response mechanism of roots to RDX therefore involve mineral nutrition and metabolic networks and are of great significance for improving phytoremediation efficiency.

Synergistic mechanisms of bioorganic fertilizer and AMF driving rhizosphere bacterial community to improve phytoremediation efficiency of multiple HMs-contaminated saline soil

The addition of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) or bioorganic fertilizer (BOF) alone has been reported to enhance plant tolerance to heavy metals and salt stress and promote plant growth, while their synergistic effects on plant growth and rhizosphere microorganism are largely unknown. This study explored the effects of AMF (Rhizophagus intraradices), BOF and BOF + RI assisted phytoremediation on heavy metals contaminated saline soil improvement and revealed the microbial mechanism. For this purpose, a pot trial consisting of four treatments (CK, RI, BOF and BOF + RI) was carried out. The results showed that the biomass, nutrient element contents, the accumulation of heavy metals and Na of Astragalus adsurgens and soil properties were most significantly improved by BOF + RI. BOF + RI significantly impacted rhizosphere microbial diversity, abundance and community composition. Chloroflexi and Patescibacteria at the phylum level and Actinomadura, Iamia, and Desulfosporosinus at the genus level were significantly enriched in BOF + RI. Network analysis revealed that BOF + RI significantly changed the keystone and enhanced complexity and interaction. Most of the keystones had roles in promoting plant growth and stress resistance. This study suggested that phytoremediation assisted by BOF and AMF is an attractive approach to ameliorate heavy metals contaminated saline soil.

The root-associated Fusarium isolated based on fungal community analysis improves phytoremediation efficiency of Ricinus communis L. in multi metal-contaminated soils

Phytoremediation is a widely accepted bioremediation method of treating heavy metal contaminated soils. Nevertheless, the remediation efficiency in multi-metal contaminated soils is still unsatisfactory attributable to susceptibility to different metals. To isolate root-associated fungi for improving phytoremediation efficiency in multi-metal contaminated soils, the fungal flora in root endosphere, rhizoplane, rhizosphere of Ricinus communis L. in heavy metal contaminated soils and non-heavy metal contaminated soils were compared by ITS amplicon sequencing, and then the critical fungal strains were isolated and inoculated into host plants to improve phytoremediation efficiency in Cd, Pb, and Zn-contaminated soils. The fungal ITS amplicon sequencing analysis indicated that the fungal community in root endosphere was more susceptible to heavy metals than those in rhizoplane and rhizosphere soils and Fusarium dominated the endophytic fungal community of R. communis L. roots under heavy metal stress. Three endophytic strains (Fusarium sp. F2, Fusarium sp. F8, and Fusarium sp. F14) isolated from Ricinus communis L. roots showed high resistances to multi-metals and possessed growth-promoting characteristics. Biomass and metal extraction amount of R. communis L. with Fusarium sp. F2, Fusarium sp. F8, and Fusarium sp. F14 inoculation in Cd-, Pb- and Zn-contaminated soils were significantly higher than those without the inoculation. The results suggested that fungal community analysis-guided isolation could be employed to obtain desired root-associated fungi for enhancing phytoremediation of multi-metal contaminated soils.

The potential roles of carotenoids in enhancing phytoremediation of bisphenol A contaminated soil by promoting plant physiology and modulating rhizobacterial community of tobacco

The widespread occurrence of bisphenol A (BPA), a typical endocrine-disrupting compound, poses potential threat to ecosystem and public health. Carotenoids are essential natural pigments, playing important roles in photosynthesis and antioxidant defense of plants. This study aimed to verify the value of carotenoids in enhancing plant tolerance to BPA stress and improving phytoremediation efficiency of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), through exogenous application of β-carotene (a typical carotenoid) and endogenous upregulation of carotenoids by overexpression of β-carotene hydroxylase (chyb) gene in tobacco. The results demonstrated that exogenous applied β-carotene alleviated the toxic effects of BPA exposure (100 mg kg−1) on wild-type (WT) tobacco plants after being cultivated for 40 d, reflecting by the increase of biomass (201.2%), chlorophyll content (27.5%) and the decrease of malondialdehyde (MDA) content (70.7%). Similar with the results of exogenous application of β-carotene, chyb gene overexpressing tobacco showed less phytotoxicity exposed to BPA, through enhancing photosynthetic efficiency (42.1%) and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production (18%). Notably, about 94.8% BPA in contaminated soil was removed under the cultivation of transgenic tobacco for 40 d, however, only 82.7% was removed in that of WT tobacco. Moreover, transgenic tobacco is beneficial for the growth of plant roots, thus upregulating the abundance of bacteria contributing to BPA degradation or soil nutrient cycling (e.g., Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Sphingomonas and MND1), which might further help to enhance plant growth and improve BPA removal efficiency in soil. This study extended our understanding of the possible mechanisms of carotenoids-involved alleviation of BPA stress in tobacco, providing a novel strategy to improve phytoremediation efficiency of plants in BPA contaminated soil.

Lead accumulation and biochemical responses in Rhus chinensis Mill to the addition of organic acids in lead contaminated soils.

Adding organic acid is an effective approach to assist phytoremediation. The effects of organic acids on phytoremediation efficiency are unknown in Rhus chinensis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of citric acid (CA) and oxalic acid (OA) on the lead phytoremediation potential of R. chinensis with significantly inhibited growth in Pb-contaminated soil. The experimental pot culture study evaluated the long-term physiological response and metal accumulation patterns of R. chinensis grown in varying Pb-treated soil, and examined the effects of 0.5 and 1.0 mmol L-1 CA and OA on the growth, oxidative stress, antioxidant system, and Pb subcellular distribution of R. chinensis grown in pots with 1000 mg kg-1 Pb. Compared with the control, the biomass, leaf area, root morphological parameters, and chlorophyll concentration of R. chinensis decreased, whereas the carotenoid, malondialdehyde, H2O2, and O2˙- concentrations, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activity increased under Pb stress. A copious amount of Pb was taken up and mainly stored in the cell walls of the roots. The application of CA and OA increased plant growth. The highest shoots and roots biomass increase recorded was 44.4 and 61.2% in 1.0 mmol L-1 OA and 0.5 mmol L-1 CA treatment, respectively. The presence of CA and OA increased SOD, POD, and CAT activities and decreased the H2O2, O2˙- and malondialdehyde content. A concentration of 0.5 mmol L-1 CA significantly increased the Pb concentration in the organs. The other organic acid treatments changed root Pb concentrations slightly while increasing shoot Pb concentrations. The translocation factor values from organic acid treatments were increased by 38.8-134.1%. Our results confirmed that organic acid could alleviate the toxicity of stunted R. chinensis and improve phytoremediation efficiency.

Phytoremediation development in Sweden

The contaminated air, water and soil have been major environmental issues during the last decades in Sweden. The phytoremediation technologies with ecological and economic benefits may help to alleviate those problems, especially related to heavy metal and organic pollutants. There is paucity of literatures on comprehensive understanding of phytoremediation technology development in Sweden. The Environmental Science and Engineering Group (ESEG) at Linnaeus University has been working on the relevant topics for decades and achieved some important findings. This study aimed at providing a systematic insight on the phytoremediation development in Sweden through literature reviews as well as summarizing the doctoral theses presented by ESEG. Herein suggestions and recommendations for phytoremediation development are given, especially those projects and research in Sweden and other countries with similar climate situation, which can benefit the works for site managers and engineers as well as ecologists and biochemists.The study presents useful findings: 1) The majority of phytoremediation research in Sweden is focused on wetlands. Some are working on soil remediation, and very few on air purification. Submerged plant species in wetlands have been shown to be more effective at removing heavy metals than free-floating and terrestrial plants. Willow is the most popular species used in soil remediation, and there are many different clones. There are some other potential plants for phytoremediation, including Poplar, Silver Birch, Alfalfa, Spinach, Fireweed, Reed Canary grass, Scots pine, Rapeseed, etc. 2) Composting, bacteria, and iodides are examples of additions that can help improve phytoremediation efficiency. 3) Both biomass yields and contaminants accumulation concentration in plant must be considered when evaluating phytoremediation efficiency. 4) The efficacy of the phytoremediation function will be influenced by factors such as plant selection, climate situation, additions of substrate, soil properties, etc. Furthermore, the concentration of contaminants varies between plants as well as between different parts of the plant. 5) Management and maintenance are essential for a successful phytoremediation operation. It is critical to protect plants against disease, fungi, insects, pests and so on.

Mechanism and Application of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria in Heavy Metal Bioremediation

Heavy metal contamination is one of the main factors causing ecological and environmental degradation. Soil contamination by heavy metals decreases soil quality, reduces agricultural productivity and quality, and even threatens human health. Therefore, optimizing remediation strategies for soils polluted with heavy metals is of great significance for high-yield, good-quality, and sustainable agriculture. Numerous domestic and foreign scholars have carried out a large number of studies on the phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. However, the remediation efficiency may be restricted by soil and climatic/environmental conditions. The synergistic remediation of microorganisms and plants is considered an effective means to improve metal remediation efficiency under environmental stresses. Metal-resistant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) not only promote plant growth and its resistance to biotic (e.g., phytopathogens, etc.) and abiotic (e.g., drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, heavy metals, etc.) stresses but also alter meal bioavailability in soils and metal toxicity in plants, thereby improving phytoremediation efficiency. In this paper, the mechanisms involved in promoting plant growth and its stress tolerance, and affecting metal bioavailability by metal-resistant PGPB, were systematically summarized. Furthermore, research progress on the application of PGPB in ecological restoration in recent years was extensively reviewed.

Valorization of agriculture waste biomass as biochar: As first-rate biosorbent for remediation of contaminated soil

Each year, Asia produces an estimated 350 million tonnes of agricultural residues. According to Ministry of Power projections, numerous tonnes of such waste are discarded each year, in addition to being used as green manure. The methodology used to convert agricultural waste into the most valuable biochar, as well as its critical physical and chemical properties, were described in this review. This review also investigates the beneficial effects of bio and phytoremediation on metal(lloid)-contaminated soil. Agriculture biomass-based biochar is an intriguing organic residue material with the potential to be used as a responsible solution for metal(lloid) polluted soil remediation and soil improvement. Plants with faster growth and higher biomass can meet massive remediation demands. Recent research shows significant progress in agricultural biomass-based biomass conversion as biochar, as well as understanding the frameworks of metal(lloid) accumulation and mobility in plants used for metal(lloid) polluted soil remediation. Biochar made from various agricultural biomass can promote native plant growth and improve phytoremediation efficiency in polluted soil with metal(lloid)s. This carbon-enriched biochar promotes native microbial activity by neutralising pH and providing adequate nutrition. Thus, this review critically examines the feasibility of converting agricultural waste biomass into biochar, as well as the impact on plant and microbe remediation potential in metal(lloid)s polluted soil.
