Identification of epidemiological risk factors for spotty liver disease in cage-free layer flocks in houses with fully slatted flooring in Australia

Spotty liver disease (SLD) is recognized to be caused by infection with Campylobacter hepaticus in adult layer hens farmed in cage-free environments. SLD is an emerging disease as cage-free egg production increases in popularity in response to desires for improved welfare of poultry. Outbreaks of SLD are frequently experienced around peak egg production in flocks, commonly between 25 and 40 wk of age. The disease becomes manifest with increased exposure and access of the birds to the feces of the flock. This study follows from a previous epidemiological survey of free-range and barn flocks in Australia which identified the presence of a scratch area within the laying house as a major risk factor for the occurrence of SLD. However, that survey also observed SLD occurrence in 45% of houses with a fully slatted floor (no scratch area). The present study describes a further analytical survey aimed at identification of risk factors for SLD in houses with fully slatted flooring. A comprehensive questionnaire was completed for 49 cage-free flocks from point of lay until 40 wk of age across Australia, retrieving information on house design, bird breed, flock size, stocking densities, bird growth, and performance and the occurrence of SLD. Multiple logistic regression model building was used to separate factors and identify important management factors that may be amenable to modify the occurrence of SLD in egg layers. Key determinants of SLD identified from the analyses were that houses with mechanical ventilation (such as tunnel ventilation) have some protection from SLD and an increase of an extra 1 bird/m2 of nest space increased odds of occurrence of SLD by 1.172 times. A recommendation to not exceed 112 brown egg layer hens/m2 of nest space in naturally ventilated houses with a full slat floor was suggested. A delay in birds reaching 60% hen day production (HD) by 1 wk is suggested as a possible predictor for a subsequent outbreak of SLD.

Carbon in Chinese grasslands: meta-analysis and theory of grazing effects

Globally, livestock grazing is an important management factor influencing soil degradation, soil health and carbon (C) stocks of grassland ecosystems. However, the effects of grassland types, grazing intensity and grazing duration on C stocks are unclear across large geographic scales. To provide a more comprehensive assessment of how grazing drives ecosystem C stocks in grasslands, we compiled and analyzed data from 306 studies featuring four grassland types across China: desert steppes, typical steppes, meadow steppes and alpine steppes. Light grazing was the best management practice for desert steppes (< 2 sheep ha−1) and typical steppes (3 to 4 sheep ha−1), whereas medium grazing pressure was optimal for meadow steppes (5 to 6 sheep ha−1) and alpine steppes (7 to 8 sheep ha−1) leading to the highest ecosystem C stocks under grazing. Plant biomass (desert steppes) and soil C stocks (meadow steppes) increased under light or medium grazing, confirming the ‘intermediate disturbance hypothesis’. Heavy grazing decreased all C stocks regardless of grassland ecosystem types, approximately 1.4 Mg ha−1 per year for the whole ecosystem. The regrowth and regeneration of grasslands in response to grazing intensity (i.e., grazing optimization) depended on grassland types and grazing duration. In conclusion, grassland grazing is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, proper management (light or medium grazing) can maintain and even increase C stocks above- and belowground, and increase the harvested livestock products from grasslands. On the other hand, human-induced overgrazing can lead to rapid degradation of vegetation and soils, resulting in significant carbon loss and requiring long-term recovery. Effect of Topping on Growth Development and CBD Content of Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) in Pot Culture

In hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivation, an important management factor is apical cut (topping) as this modulates plant architecture, plant biomass allocation as well as the yield of inflorescences and cannabinoids per plant and area. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of topping treatment on agronomical and quality characteristics of two monoecious hemp varieties, ‘Fedora 17’ and ‘Felina’, A greenhouse pot experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD), with two topping treatments (untreated and topped). The results revealed that plant height of both varieties was negatively affected by topping treatment and the higher values were recorded in the untreated (137.02 and 134.56 cm for Fedora 17 and Felina, respectively). The highest values of dry weight per plant and bud dry weight per plant were noticed for topped plants. In conclusion, the findings of the present study implied that the hemp had a positive response to applied topping for all studied cultivars and the CBD content was higher in topped plants as topping stress increased cannabidiol (CBD) content.

Increasing dominance of non-native fishes in the yield of central European streams and rivers

Introductions of non-native fishes are among the biggest threats to freshwater ecosystems globally. However, the effects of such introductions on fisheries management and fish yields are understudied. This study is trying to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing relationships between yields of native and non-native fishes with regards to important fisheries management factors, such as fish stocking, fishing effort, and the type or size of the fishery. I analyzed the changes in fish yields in the regions of Prague and central Bohemia from 1986 to 2017. Based on the 32 years of reported data that included 60 million harvested fish weighing 80 tons that were harvested by 250,000 anglers, I conclude that while predominately native fish species were harvested by anglers in the 1980, non-native fish species started dominating in the 21st century. This was true on both small trout streams (1–m wide) and medium-sized cyprinid rivers (5–250 m wide). This dominance is partially explained by the decreasing percentage of native salmonids and cyprinids and by the decreasing or stagnating percentage of native piscivores in the overall fish yield. Conversely, the percentage of non-native salmonids in the overall fish yield was increasing on both streams and rivers. Most importantly though, the percentage of non-native cyprinids – which made 60–80 % of all harvested fish – increased by 16 % over 32 years. Fish yield had a strong positive relationship with fish stocking intensity, a strong negative relationship with angling effort, and strong but mixed relationships with size of the fishery. In conclusion, native fishes are being slowly replaced by non-native fishes in the yield of recreational anglers in central Europe.

Analysis of the Current Maintenance Management Process in School Buildings: Study Area of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Republic of Croatia

Due to their educational purpose, impact on users and quality of education, school buildings are vital institutions in the community, and their adequate maintenance should be mandatory. Studies conducted around the world point to specific inadequacies that occur in the school maintenance segment, however studies that examine the entire maintenance management process in detail are rare. With such studies, it is possible to observe all components of maintenance and its management in the observed buildings, it is possible to get a detailed insight into the present inadequacies and problems, and give the best possible answer to them. Observing the territory of the Republic of Croatia, it was noticed that there are no adequate databases on school building maintenance. Given all the above, this paper aims to establish a methodological framework and analyze the entire maintenance management process in Croatian schools to detect potential inadequacies, reveal problems, and identify areas for action to improve maintenance performance and carry out maintenance more efficiently. The current maintenance management process of elementary school buildings in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Republic of Croatia, was examined based on the developed methodological framework. Data on the management process were collected through a questionnaire survey among school principals. The questionnaire was compiled based on an extensive literature review. Maintenance performance through management functions was investigated, namely: maintenance planning, maintenance organization, maintenance directing, and maintenance controlling. Important management factors within each of the mentioned functions were observed. The data analysis revealed specific inadequacies and problems in the maintenance process, and it was shown that maintenance management is not entirely effective. Recommendations were given to improve the current situation. In this way, it is possible to quickly and easily examine the entire management process and identify measures that need to be introduced in schools to improve their business in the maintenance segment. The developed methodological framework can be applied to schools from other areas as well as to other types of buildings.

The Combined Effect of IgG and Fe Supply and Feeding Management on Growth Rates of Calves on Eight Commercial Dairy Farms in Germany.

Simple SummaryWell-thought-out calf rearing is essential to produce long-lived and productive cows for future dairy herds. The first days of a calf’s life are a very important period. It is known that calves that are adequately supplied with colostrum during this period have sufficient antibodies. They gain weight faster and fall ill less frequently. Identifying other management factors that have positive effects on calf growth is the subject of this study. To investigate this, 123 Holstein calves on eight conventional dairy farms were followed from birth to 50 days of life in spring 2017, and the influence on the animals’ weight gain due to management factors such as timing and supply of colostrum, iron supplementation, feeding regime and microbial load at first feeding was analyzed. The results show that, in addition to an adequate level of antibodies in the colostrum fed to the calves, the iron concentration in the calves’ blood and the feeding regimen play an important role in the calves’ weight gains and thus in calf rearing.During the first days of a calf’s life, the foundations are laid for successful growth and thus also for the later performance of the cows. The aim of the present study was to analyze the impact on the weight gain of newborn calves due to important management factors related to colostrum supply, iron supply, feeding regime and microbial load at first feeding. In spring 2017, information of 123 Holstein calves were analyzed with regard to the colostrum supply and management factors on eight commercial dairy farms located in Germany. Additionally, blood samples of newborn calves were analyzed for total immunoglobulin G (IgG) and serum iron content. Furthermore, Brix analysis and analysis of contamination by E. coli were performed on first colostrum samples from teats or buckets. Average daily weight gain of calves at days 14 and 50 was calculated. The colostrum IgG was estimated by Brix refractometer. The volume of initial colostrum supply and the time between birth and colostrum intake significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the serum IgG concentration. The serum IgG concentration, the serum iron concentration and the feeding regimen (restrictive or not restrictive feeding) had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on daily weight gains. In conclusion, this study shows that, in addition to a sufficient supply of immunoglobulins, other aspects, such as an adequate colostrum, iron and milk supply, play an essential role in calf growth rates.

Experiential examination of higher education partnerships in the UK: a knowledge management perspective

PurposeHigher education institutions possess a plethora of knowledge at the institutional, departmental and individual levels. Therefore, knowledge management plays a vital role in assisting partnerships to synergise knowledge and strengthen market competitiveness when working collaboratively. The purpose of this study is to identify and critically discuss the role of knowledge management concepts that support development of UK higher education partnerships. This knowledge management research was undertaken with the purpose of exploring components of behavioural constructs in assisting the development of successful partnerships between higher education institutions.Design/methodology/approachThis research embraces a qualitative methodology and makes use of an expert panel method to gather field data and assess the relevance, robustness and applicability of a conceptual model developed in the context of higher education partnerships. Guided by two research questions, the researchers elicited knowledge from eight experts, academics and practitioners, who had initiated and led partnership development between UK higher education institutions. The experts were invited and selected to attend the panel using the criteria of “Years of Experience in the Higher Education sector”, “Job Positions and Experiences” and the “Partnership Scope and Impact”.FindingsDepicting in a tree analogy, the conceptual model indicates that effective knowledge management will require higher education executives, managers and practitioners to centre on nurturing “tree roots” presented as behavioural knowledge management constructs and include institutional culture, trust, absorptive capacities and communication channels. The research findings elaborate on previous research and provide a categorisation of partnership outcomes between higher education institutions, explaining that partnership outcomes can be of an “Academic”, “Marketing and Finance” or “Managerial” nature. Importantly, practical use of the model could be implemented using audit methods or benchmarking methods, whereby the categorised elements of the model are used as a criterion of assessment for audit teams.Originality/valueThe conclusion extracted experiential insights to provide guidance as to how higher education executives, managers and practitioners can make use of knowledge management behavioural constructs and activities to assist collaborative undertakings in the higher education sector. This paper provided a new, modified, knowledge management higher education partnership tree, thus giving researchers and academic practitioners a holistic viewpoint of important partnership knowledge management factors.

Association of days in close up, gestation length, and rumination around time of calving with disease and pregnancy outcomes in multiparous dairy cows

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rumination times and days spent in a close-up group before calving (DCU) on early-lactation health and reproductive outcomes in dairy cows. Data were gathered for 719 cows located in a single herd. Herd management and reproductive records were analyzed for cows receiving treatment in the first 30 d of lactation (days in milk; DIM) for clinical mastitis, reproductive tract disease, ketosis, milk fever, and displaced abomasum. Rumination times for each cow were downloaded daily from the herd's automated collar system used to generate heat and health alerts for each cow beginning at 21 d precalving until 14 d postcalving. During the first 30 DIM, 121 cows (18%) developed at least 1 disease-any combination of ketosis (40 cows, 5.9% of total), mastitis (17 cows, 2.5%), metritis (75 cows, 11%), milk fever (17 cows, 2.5%), or displaced abomasum (28 cows, 4.1%); 305 cows (45%) were pregnant again at 100 DIM, and an additional 139 cows (20%) were pregnant at 150 DIM. Principal component analysis was used to determine the relationship between gestation length and DCU and their association with the odds of developing disease in early lactation. We did not find any significant association between precalving rumination time and disease within the first 30 DIM. Higher rumination time in the week before calving was shown to be strongly linked to a shorter time to subsequent pregnancy, whereas rumination times postcalving were not associated with changes in the time to pregnancy. Principal component analysis showed that a curvilinear combination of gestation length and DCU (principal component 1) was significantly associated with changes in disease incidence in the first 30 DIM. Gestation length and time spent in close up are important management factors in reducing the incidence of disease in early lactation, and rumination times around calving may help predict future reproductive outcomes.

Dry period management and new high somatic cell count during the dry period in Dutch dairy herds under selective dry cow therapy

The aim of this study was to describe the current management practices that could influence udder health during the dry period and to investigate the associations between management and new high SCC during the dry period. In 2008 the Netherlands started to improve transparency and decrease the use of antimicrobials in animal husbandry. Prevention of new high SCC during the dry period via antimicrobial dry cow treatment (DCT) was no longer allowed in animals with a low SCC before the dry period. An increase of new high SCC during the dry period was expected in dairy cows without antimicrobial protection, but was not observed. In 2018 an online questionnaire was conducted among 1,942 Dutch dairy farms using 12 different veterinary clinics. The questionnaire asked about the management of dry cows at the start of and during the dry period, and around calving, considerations in the use of DCT, and knowledge of the 2012 guidelines for selective DCT. A total of 690 farmers (36%) responded to the questionnaire. Data on new high SCC during the dry period, use of antimicrobials for intramammary DCT and mastitis treatment, herd size, and milking system were available from other sources. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the associations between the different variables. For analysis of new high SCC on herd level, explanatory variables were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model. Respondents indicated that the most important management factor to reduce the risk of new high SCC was reduction of milk yield before dry-off. The variables associated with a lower proportion of new high SCC on herd level during the dry period were the use of dip or spray after drying off, a higher animal-defined daily dose of intramammary antimicrobials for DCT, the use of DCT in low-SCC cows based on SCC or mastitis history, correct knowledge of the guideline, and awareness of importance of low infection rate and good hygiene during dry-off. The variables associated with a higher proportion of new high SCC on herd level were dry cow housing other than cubicles and a higher animal-defined daily dose for intramammary antimicrobials for mastitis. This research clearly indicates that farmers can balance limited use of antimicrobials at dry-off with management measures to maintain good udder health during the dry period.

Analysis of Key Parameters in PBGA Manufacturing Process Using Heuristic Approach and General Regression Neural Network

In the printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing industry, the yield is an important management factor as it significantly affects the product cost and quality. However, in real situations, it is difficult to ensure a high yield in a manufacturing process, because the products are manufactured through numerous nanoscale manufacturing operations. Thus, for improving the yield, it is necessary to analyze the key process parameters and equipment parameters that result in a low yield. In this study, critical equipment parameters that affect the yield were extracted through a mutual analysis of the equipment parameters (x) and process parameters (y) in the plastic ball grid array (PBGA) manufacturing process. To this end, the study uses the correlation coefficient to apply the heuristic algorithm that extracts critical parameters that keep the redundancy among the equipment parameters to a minimum and exert maximum impact on the critical process parameters. Additionally, by using the general regression neural network technique, the effects of the critical equipment parameters on the process parameters were confirmed. The test results were applied to the PBGA production line and an improvement in the yield was confirmed.

A global assessment of the impact of individual protected areas on preventing forest loss.

Globally, the number and extent of terrestrial protected areas (PAs) are expanding rapidly. Nonetheless, their impacts on preventing forest loss and the factors influencing the impacts are not well understood, despite the critical roles of forests in biodiversity conservation, provision of ecosystem services, and achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. To address this important knowledge gap, we quantified the impacts of 54,792 PAs worldwide on preventing forest loss from 2000 to 2015, and assessed important landscape and management factors affecting the impacts of PAs. Although the majority (71.4%) of the PAs contributed to preventing forest loss, only 30.5% of forest loss in the PAs have been prevented. PAs with higher rates of forest loss in their surrounding regions, located at lower elevations, within a few hours of travel from the nearest city, with higher agricultural productivity, and permission for fewer human uses were better able to prevent forest loss. Impacts on preventing forest loss were similar regardless of whether the PAs were privately or publicly owned. Our findings highlight the potential benefits of strict protections, involving private entities in the establishment of PAs, and situating PAs in areas exposed to high risks of forest loss to enhance the capacity to combat global forest loss.

Causes and Flock Level Risk Factors of Sheep and Goat Abortion in Three Agroecology Zones in Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted to estimate the incidence of small ruminant abortion and identify its major causes and potential risk factors in goat and sheep flocks in three agroecology and production systems of Ethiopia. Information on pregnancy outcomes and management risk factors were collected for 299 goat and 242 sheep flocks. Blood samples were collected from 133 sheep and 90 goat flocks and tested for Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., Chlamydia abortus, and Toxoplasma gondii. A causal diagram outlined relationships between potential predictor variables and abortion in the flock. The effect of management and exposure to infectious causes on the number of abortions in the flock across agroecology was tested using zero-inflated negative binomial regression. Results showed that 142 (58.68%) goats and 53 (17.73%) sheep flocks reported abortions in the 12 months before the survey. The mean annual flock abortion percentages were 16.1% (±26.23) for does and 12.6% (±23.5) for ewes. Farmers perceived infectious diseases, extreme weather conditions, feed shortage, physical traumas, and plant poisoning as the most important causes of abortion. A higher proportion of abortion was recorded during the short rainy season (March to May) and start of the short dry and cold season (June to August) in the lowland mixed crop-livestock and pastoral agroecology and production system, respectively. Overall, 65.41% sheep and 92.22% goat flocks tested positive for one or more abortion causing agents, namely, C. burnetti, C. abortus, Brucella spp., and T. gondii; mixed infection was found in 31.58% sheep and 63.33% goat flocks. Spending the night in a traditional house and providing supplementary feed for pregnant dams were important management factors which significantly (p ≤ 0.05) decreased the risk of abortion by 2.63 and 4.55 times, respectively. However, the presence of other livestock species and dogs in the household and exposure of the flock to Brucella spp. or anyone of the four tested infectious agents significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the risk of abortion in sheep and goat flocks. In general, abortion is a challenge for small ruminant production in the study area especially in lowland agroecology and calls for improvement in husbandry practices, health care and biosecurity practices.

Association between age at first calving and lactation performance, lactation curve, calving interval, calf birth weight, and dystocia in Holstein dairy cows.

In the present study, records on 115,291 heifers distributed in 113 herds were used to investigate the association between age at the first calving (AFC) and lactation performance, lactation curve, the length of the first calving interval (CI), calf birth weight (CBW), and the incidence of dystocia in Holstein heifers in Iran. Based on the AFC, the heifers were classified into eight classes: AFC of 541 to 690 d, 691 to 720 d, 721 to 750 d, 751 to 780 d, 781 to 810 d, 811 to 840 d, 841 to 900 d, and 901 to 1200 d (AFC1 to AFC8, respectively). Multiple regression mixed models were used to investigate the association between AFC and lactation curve parameters, partial and 305-d lactation performance, 100- and 305-d SCS, and the length of the first calving (CI) interval. The mean (SD) and median AFC across all heifers was 760.2 (74.01) and 750 d, respectively. Of 115,291 heifers included, 28,192 and 7,602 heifers were, respectively, ≤ 720 and > 900 d when calving for the first time. More than 44% of the heifers were at 691 to 750 d (23 to 25 months) of age when calving for the first time. An increased AFC was associated with increased partial and 305-d lactation performance, 100- and 305-d SCS, initial milk yield, milk production at the peak of lactation, upward and downward slopes of the lactation curve. The 305-d fat percentage was associated with AFC; however, there was no association between AFC and 305-d protein percentage. An increased AFC was also associated with decreased milk production persistency, delayed peak time, longer CI, and higher calf birth weight. Compared to heifers calving for the first time between 691 to 780 d (23 to 26 months) of age, both increasing and decreasing AFC were associated with increased risk of dystocia. Controlling AFC is an important management factor in achieving a lower risk of dystocia, higher lactation performance, lower SCS, and shorter length of the calving interval.

Application of text mining in identifying the factors of supply chain financing risk management

PurposeThis study aims to clarify the risk management practices of banks as supply chain finance (SCF) service providers.Design/methodology/approachUsing 4,014 evaluation and approval reports, this study constructed five risk management factors and examined their functions with secondary data. Two text-mining techniques (i.e. word sense induction, TF–IDF) were used to equip the classic routine of dictionary-based content analysis.FindingsThis research successfully identified four important risk management factors: relationship-based assessment, asset monitoring, cash flow monitoring and supply chain collaboration. The default-preventing effect of these factors are different and contingent on the type of financing contexts (i.e. preshipment, postshipment).Practical implicationsThe empirical evidences provide practical implications for SCF service providers to manage risk. SCF service providers are suggested to pay more attention to cash flow monitoring when providing postshipment financing services and shift the focus to relationship building and supply chain collaboration when providing preshipment financing services.Originality/valueThe study shows that a large volume of textual materials can provide adequate clues for researches as long as they are mined with suitable analytic techniques and approaches. Based on the results, SCF service providers can identify problems of their operations and directions for improvement. In addition, the risk management vocabulary from the E&A reports can be utilized by SCF service providers to digitize their loan approving process and, further, to facilitate the decision-makings.

Selected Factors of SMEs Management in the Service Sector

The article aims to compare important management factors between SMEs in the service sector and SMEs in other entrepreneurship sectors. The study was realized in the Czech Republic and the Slovak republic over SMEs in the service sector and other sectors in 2019-2020. The data were collected from the owners or top-level managers; the total sample used in the study was 822 SMEs. The questionnaire was constructed in an online version and was fulfilled by 240 SMEs in the service sector and 582 other companies in the Czech or Slovak republic. The research hypotheses were evaluated by basic statistics tools: contingency tables, Z-score, and Chi-square test. The results showed that there are significant differences in the agreed attitudes to the statement: "I manage the company for more than 8 hours a day" between the Czech (62%) and Slovak (71%) respondents in the service business sector. Neither nationality nor the business sector is essential determinants in the perception of human capital as the most critical element in the company (8 out of 10 respondents) and the fact that the owner (manager) of the company should regularly evaluate the performance of its subordinates and motivate them to innovate in work processes. The results are interesting for the entrepreneurs themselves and for entities and organizations that help SMEs' business activities in selected countries, respectively, for economic policymakers.

Development of Fire Risk Assessment Index of Traditional Market

Each store in a traditional market is operated by individual merchants, which are vulnerable to fire hazards. In addition, the facilities themselves tend to be old and have management problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fire response system of a traditional market and determining specific problems for fire and safety experts. Analysis results indicated that the electric supply field was the most important and primary parameter. In the electric supply field, the facility characteristics were the most important and in the facility characteristics, the use of standard cables and connection status management were important management factors. In the field of public/store management, which is the first-tier second location, the facility characteristics were the most important. In the facility characteristics, the management of the components for emergency fire extinguishing was the most important management factor. In the gas field, which is the first-tier third location, the facility characteristics were the most important and the facility adequacy is the most important management factor. The importance scores calculated for each management factor can be standardized to create a 100-point evaluation indicator. Continuous monitoring of fires in a traditional market through this evaluation index will make the traditional markets safer from fire hazards.

A calculator to quantify cover crop effects on soil health and productivity

Many producers use cover crops as a means to increase soil health and agricultural productivity, yet benefits of this practice vary depending on environmental and management conditions. In an effort to objectively evaluate how cover crops affect soil properties and crop production across climates and systems, we compiled data from 269 studies that compared cover crop treatments versus no cover crop controls. We then used t-tests and unbalanced analysis of variation tests to evaluate cover crop-related effects on 38 indicators of soil health and productivity. The t-test analysis indicated that cover cropping caused significant changes in 28 of 38 indicators, with differences seen for all physical parameters and most indicators associated with biological and environmental measurements. The unbalanced analysis of variation test allowed us to identify a hierarchy of most to least important environment and management factors for each indicator. Using this hierarchy, we developed a calculator that allows users to evaluate how cover crop usage affects 13 key indicators, including cash crop yield, weed pressure, soil aggregate stability, soil organic carbon, soil nitrogen, and infiltration rates. The calculator requires only four inputs – climatic region, soil texture group, cash crop rotation, and cover crop type – and as output provides mean percent change for each indicator based on the selected factors. The analyses produced in this study provide new insight into specific soil health and productivity responses to cover cropping, and the corresponding web-based calculator will help to ensure that soil health measurements from the field and laboratory are useful to farmers, planners, and regulators. Further, as more data becomes integrated into the calculator, results will continue to improve in accuracy and realism, ultimately helping to make soil health evaluation a practical outcome for more producers.

Soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics in a Vertisol following 50 years of no-tillage, crop stubble retention and nitrogen fertilization

Conservation agriculture commonly improves soil health and results in organic C sequestration. This study compared conventional tillage (CT) and no tillage (NT) systems, examining differences in stubble management [stubble burning (SB) and stubble retention (SR)] and N fertilization on soil C, C fractions and N. The experiment was established in 1968 on a Vertisol at Hermitage in Queensland, Australia. After 50 years of management; it was found that the tillage regime, the addition of N fertilizers, and the stubble management were all important in influencing soil C pools in 0–0.1 m of soil depth. Overall, the addition of N fertilizers and the tillage regime were the most important management factors. For example, the addition of N fertilizers at a rate of 90 kg ha−1 resulted in an average increase in SOC of 18%, while use of NT resulted in an average increase in SOC of 5%. Similarly, application of N fertilizers increased total soil N (TSN) concentrations by ≤25.5%, increased the stabilized SOC fraction by ≤26.6%, and increased microbial biomass C by ≤22%. Regardless, stubble management practices were also important, with the retention of stubble increasing TSN, increasing the stabilized C fraction, and increasing the microbial biomass C ≤ 30%. Finally, it was observed that the microbial metabolic quotient was 39% higher when stubble was burned and in the absence of N fertilization, indicating microbial stress under these treatments. The study clearly shows the importance of stubble retention and N fertilization in conservation agriculture for improvement in soil health and maintenance of soil C levels.

Big Data Analysis Methodology for Smart Manufacturing Systems

The goal of smart factories is to improve productivity and reduce production costs, but it is more important to attain manufacturing competitiveness through improvements to product quality and yield. As product functions become more advanced and processing becomes increasingly miniaturized, the yields of micro-manufacturing processes have become an important management factor, determining the production cost and quality of a product. Micro-manufacturing processes generally pass through many stages to produce a product; therefore, it is difficult to find the process or piece of equipment where a fault has occurred. As such, it is difficult to realistically ensure high yields. This paper presents an S-EES (smart-equipment engineering system) construction and big data analysis methodology for manufacturing to increase product yield and quality in a smart factory environment. It also presents plans for acquiring the data needed for big data analysis of a manufacturing site and for constructing the system. To improve product yield, it is necessary to analyze the fault factors causing low yield; similarly, the critical processes and equipment that affect these fault factors must be identified and managed. However, interrelations exist between pieces of equipment, and complex faults are caused by the downstream as well as upstream in the processing sequence that a certain lot passes through. Because of this, yield management is important but also difficult. This study finds the fault-responsible processes and machines that affect yields by using a method that utilizes PLS-VIP (partial least squares with variable importance of projection) and association rules in micro-manufacturing line processes, and it classifies these processes and machines as single factors or cumulative factors. In addition, it applies the specific methodology to an actual site, extracts the fault-responsible processes and machines, and confirms the effects of important processes and equipment on yields.
