Linking Leadership Styles and Employees Retention: The Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction

Numerous studies have shown the benefits and importance of leadership styles in the service sector, and their role in enhancing employees’ overall well-being and retaining qualified capital. This study was designed to test the link among the different styles of leadership, job satisfaction and employees' retention. A total of (606) questionnaires were distributed to the employees in different hotels in Saudi Arabia.

The Impact of Muhammadiyah’ Leadership Style and Total Quality Management on Competitive Advantage in Universities – Case on Universities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The distinctiveness of the Muhammadiyah Leadership Style (MLS) and the implementation of total quality management (TQM) in realizing the competitive advantage of higher education, especially at Muhammadiyah-'Aisyiyah (PTMA) universities, is an interesting situation to be revealed. This article explores the Muhammadiyah Leadership Style's distinctiveness with Total Quality Management's role in increasing competitive advantage. This research uses a positivistic paradigm with an explanatory research type, data collection through questionnaires on 115 study programs at Ahmad Dahlan University, Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University, and 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta University using saturation samples and smartPLS as a testing tool. The results showed that the Muhammadiyah Leadership Style, directly or indirectly through Total quality management, positively increased competitive advantage. The treatment of Total Quality Management in higher education proved to bring Muhammadiyah-'Aisyiyah universities to achieve a competitive advantage. The research subjects were taken at the study program of the Muhammadiyah-'Aisyiyah College (PTMA) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) among the many study programs in the PTMA environment located in various regions of Indonesia and abroad, which is a limitation of this study. For universities, the importance of leadership styles is carried out by the unique considerations of each university to realize the organization's competitive advantage and provide insight into the development of leadership styles under the Muhammadiyah Association.

 simultaneously / partially on the performance of members of the Jatiasih Polsek Polres Metro
 Bekasi City, the leadership style of the Kapolsek dominantly influences the performance of
 members of the Jatiasih Police, this indicates the importance of leadership style and motivation
 to improve member performance. If the style of leadership and providing motivation is not
 considered, there will be a decrease in work performance/achievement. After conducting an
 evaluation, it can be concluded that there is a need for increased attention and policy towards
 members of the Jatiasih Polsek at Polres Metro Bekasi City regarding performance, regarding
 the time standard which can still be said to be lacking and motivation must be created for good
 members to achieve organizational goals

The Determination of the Relationship between Leadership Styles and Training Modes in the TEVET in Zambia

A leadership style which can be termed as the manner and approach of giving direction to an organisation, enables Institutional Managers to use a well-defined set of actions and activities that manifest in the daily institutional business that presumably guides the institutional outcomes. A training mode is a method and strategy for the delivery of instructional content that is structured by an educational or training institution. In the Zambian Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) sector there are six methods of training delivery that are used to increase access to TEVET and to enhance the training instruction. Nevertheless, there have been misgivings about the use of asynchronous methods of instruction in the TEVET sector to increase access and participation because of training institutions not having the requisite requirements to offer this kind of training. According to Chikoye and Siaciwena (2008) in recent years training institutions have either launched or are keen to launch new ODL programmes. However, the existing abilities of various institutions to offer ODL should be matched against necessary requirements for such programmes. Therefore, this paper determined if there was a relationship between leadership styles and training modes offered in training institutions by use of a descriptive correlation survey, furthermore, the importance of leadership styles in training modes is adduced and is the significant contribution to knowledge in TEVET leadership and quality. A Complexity-based Framework for Social Product Development

The development of new products using social technologies among defined crowds of individuals or groups, commonly known as Social Product Development (SPD), has become a growing trend in engineering design and manufacturing literature. This paper proposes an approach to studying the actors involved in SPD from a complexity science point of view. Specifically, we suggest that organizational efforts towards SPD must be concentrated on human and technological elements to achieve success in New Product Development (NPD). The paper explores the differences and similarities between the creation of new products and SPD and proposes a differentiated approach, based on complexity science for the different stages of NPD and SPD. Our findings show that SPD requires the integration of the complexity approach due to the combination of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of those involved during the development of new products. In addition, it is recommended that engineering design managers consider the importance of leadership styles, work structure, and organizational culture to achieve the expected outcomes of SPD.

The Importance of Leadership Style Towards Perceived Organizational Politics in China School: A Review of Transactional Leadership

Leadership is most effectively understood as a social exchange of resources, and as such, leaders are effective to the extent that they can encourage followers to engage in extra-role behaviour that boosts workers' productivity as well as inspire followers to reach or surpass performance requirements. The researcher contends that political skill is one of these crucial abilities that is essential to effective leadership. While effective leadership required extensive political abilities in order to motivate and mobilize individuals to collaborate in order to achieve important goals and objectives. Organizational politics are a fundamental truth that cannot be avoided. Organizational politics in a company take the shape of competition for resources, interpersonal strife, contests for leadership, and tactical influence used by individuals and groups to gain authority, establish personal stature, restrict information access, conceal true objectives, and forge alliances. In this present study, investigation focuses on the transactional leadership styles of school’s principals have relationship towards organizational politics within the climate of the school; the attitudes that teachers have toward leadership; the turnover rate of instructors; and the academic achievements of students. By analyzing the connections between transactional leadership philosophies and organizational politics, this study aims to address these issues. The proposed framework on transactional leadership style and its relationship with perceived organizational politics in China's schools was to understand where each leadership style was applied and how leadership styles are linked to organizational politics in China school. In addition, the future findings will illuminate the situational and contingency theories, paving the way for the next stages of research. Utilizing transactional leadership approaches and enforcing effective organizational politics, principals create conditions that allow for improved leadership on their part. The methodological implications for scholars and policymakers can be taken into account in future studies.

Leadership in state-owned enterprises of the Maldives

Leadership is often attributed to the successes and failures of different types of organisations existing in various contexts. The aim of this quantitative correlation study is to analyse the prevalent leadership styles in state-owned enterprises (SOE) of the Maldives and its relationship with the financial performance. Additionally, it looked at the possible contextual factors which could influence leadership styles of the SOEs. The study includes 10 SOEs from the Maldives and analyses their leadership style using the data collected from the managers of the SOEs using a Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) questionnaire. The contextual influence was analysed using Likert scale questions structured based on the Maldivian context and the existing literature. Financial performance was analysed by comparing return on capital employed (ROCE) of the SOEs, which was collected through the annual reports published by the enterprises. The findings of the study showed that transformational leadership style was common in the SOEs of the Maldives. It also highlighted a significant negative correlation with the contextual factors and transformational leadership style. Contrary to most existing literature, the study did not find any significant correlations with leadership style and financial performance. The findings of the study could be of help to the government in appointing leaders and in setting up regulations for the SOEs. The results of the study also suggest the need for further research to more confidently comment about the importance of leadership style in the SOE domain.

Does Servant Leadership Promote Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Citizenship Behavior among Employees? A Structural Analysis

The last two decades have seen a conspicuous rise in the importance of leadership styles. Servant Leadership (SL) is believed to be a pioneering style of leadership that aims to serve others first. Based on the Social Learning Theory and Social Exchange Theory, this study investigates whether SL promotes Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) among employees. In this regard, it also examines what role the employees’ Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays between the two variables. A sample of 422 responses was obtained from the managerial and non-managerial staff service and manufacturing industries using a non-probability sampling technique. The data that was collected was analyzed using the PLS-SEM technique. The results indicated a strong positive relationship between SL and OCB. Moreover, the employees’ EI was also found to mediate the relationship between the two variables partially. The analysis showed that leaders who can serve their followers’ needs and expectations to the best of their abilities could promote and strengthen EI among their employees, which eventually boosted their followers’ behavior’s emotional and motivational aspects. This study suggests that managers adopt an SL style that fosters empathy and trust with their employees. Meeting their employees’ expectations and requirements may boost their EI, which helps them attract positive energy and create an atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration.

The predictive power of managers' leadership attributes on workers' performance: a case of New Zealand construction industry

Extant literature provides evidence of a direct relationship between leadership and organisational outcomes. Affective leadership styles would create shared values, commitment and teamwork amongst organisational members, which correspondingly enhances overall goal achievement. More of this knowledge area is required of the construction industry in New Zealand, particularly from the viewpoint of workers. This study investigates the relationship between leadership styles and worker performance outcomes for construction organisations in Wellington, New Zealand. Data were obtained from workers using the well-known Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to determine the relationship between identified leadership attributes and worker performance outcomes. The study found that there was a significant relationship between all of the leadership style attributes and worker performance outcomes. Specifically, transformational leadership was found to be the most prominent leadership style adopted. The result shows that workers accomplished set tasks and goals as an outcome of this leadership style. Regarding leadership attributes, the study found that managers exhibited more of Idealised Influence (Attributed) and Inspirational Motivation attributes than others. Also, it was found that managers' failure to engage with worker and respond to urgent matters when required (Lassiez-Faire and Management by Exception (Passive)) were identified as major deterrents to the performance of workers. This study provides extended knowledge on the importance of leadership styles with the New Zealand construction industry.

Leadership and Commitment to Service Quality in Pakistani Hospitals: The Contingent Role of Role Clarity

The health care system is usually a reflection of the human development and prosperity index of a country. In particular, a sound health care system is generally deemed essential for providing quality service delivery to service users. Pakistan, in this respect, is lagging even after implementing the district health management model of World Health Organization (WHO). In particular, the province of Sindh reports a higher level of dissatisfaction among the service recipients and, therefore, remains a core concern for the concerned authorities. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the levels of employees’ commitment to service quality in Pakistan’s health care sector. A quantitative survey method was adopted to collect data from 315 medical officers working in 43 public-sector hospitals in Sindh, Pakistan. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique and Smart PLS 3 software. Based on cognitive dissonance theory and path-goal theory, the present study investigated the role of leadership styles in influencing commitment to service quality with the moderation of role clarity. The findings lend support to the direct hypothesized relationships of transformational and transactional leadership with commitment to service quality. The study found significant support for all the hypothetical relationships except laissez-faire leadership’s direct link with commitment to service quality. While role clarity was found to moderate the relationships of two leadership styles, namely, transformational leadership and laissez-faire leadership with commitment to service quality, there was no such moderating effect for the relationship between transactional leadership and commitment to service quality. These findings offer useful theoretical and managerial implications on the importance of leadership styles in influencing commitment to service quality and provide the basis for future research.

Employees’ retention in Nigeria’s hospitality industry: The role of transformational leadership style and job satisfaction

Studies have shown the benefits and importance of leadership styles in service producing industries, to promote employees’ overall well-being. This study was designed to examine interaction among the transformational style of leadership and job satisfaction, life satisfaction and turnover intention of employees. A total of 324 questionnaires were administered to the employees of six functioning universities’ guesthouses in South-West, Nigeria. Structural Equation Modeling was used for assessing the fit of the model. Findings indicated that idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration improved job satisfaction, and inversely affected turnover intention. In addition, life satisfaction was enhanced by idealized influence and individualized consideration, while inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation had no positive effect on life satisfaction. Life satisfaction was positively associated with job satisfaction, and negatively associated with turnover intention. Recommendations were made for the hospitality organizations to embrace transformational leadership style to improve employees’ work attitudes and behaviors. The managerial implications, study limitation and suggestion for further study were also discussed.

Relationships among transformational leadership, organizational climate, organizational citizenship behavior and performance in Romanian employees

In this paper we identified on the one hand the relationship among transformational leadership, organizational climate, organizational citizenship behavior, and performance, and on the other hand the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior in the relation between transformational leadership and the performance of Romanian employees. The participants were 316 employees from small, medium and large Romanian companies. The male and female participants were selected from private sector economic organizations, either manufacturing companies or service providers. The results showed that transformational leadership was positively associated with the organizational climate, organizational citizenship behavior, and employees’ performance. The organizational citizenship behavior was positively associated with employees’ performance. It was also noticed that organizational citizenship behavior mediates the relationship between leadership and performance, with relatively equal effects on task performance and on contextual performance. By understanding the importance of leadership style in the organizational environment, leadership skills improvement programs may be developed to enhance the performance of the organization.

EFFECTS OF LEADERSHIP STYLES ON HOTEL FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of leadership styles on financial performance. Although the importance of leadership styles has been recognized in practice and academia, little research has focused on the impact of leadership on financial performance in hospitality and tourism industry. Design – The paper first defines motives, leadership styles, leaders’ experiences, and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). It then uses quasi-experimental design to predict the impacts of leadership styles and leaders’ experiences on financial performance. Methodology – The study has conducted partial least square regression to find the effects of leadership styles and leaders’ experiences on financial performance of the hotel companies. Approach – Vision statements of the publicly traded hotel companies are transferred into motives and leadership styles using the LIWC. Findings – Transformational leadership and longer-tenured CEOs with high power and affiliation motives are associated with return on equity (ROE) whereas transactional leadership and older CEOs with high achievement motive affect return on assets (ROA). Originality of the research – The study opens a new approach to quantify the vision statements using LIWC and contributes to the relationship of leadership styles, leaders’ experiences, and financial performance.

Importance of Leadership Style towards Quality of Care Measures in Healthcare Settings: A Systematic Review.

Effective leadership of healthcare professionals is critical for strengthening quality and integration of care. This study aimed to assess whether there exist an association between different leadership styles and healthcare quality measures. The search was performed in the Medline (National Library of Medicine, PubMed interface) and EMBASE databases for the time period 2004–2015. The research question that guided this review was posed as: “Is there any relationship between leadership style in healthcare settings and quality of care?” Eighteen articles were found relevant to our research question. Leadership styles were found to be strongly correlated with quality care and associated measures. Leadership was considered a core element for a well-coordinated and integrated provision of care, both from the patients and healthcare professionals.

Leadership Styles and Their Relationship with the Private University Employees’ Job Satisfaction in United Arab Emirates

Rapid progression of United Arab Emirates’ higher education sectors and the competition among private universities, increase the need to explore the influencing factors which leading to improve the organization performance. The purpose of the study current research was to examine the relationships between leadership styles and job satisfaction among the private university employees in the UAE. A random sampling technique was employed to collect data of 241 faculty members and staff from seven private universities in UAE. The method used to collect data was quantitative in nature and two different types of instruments were used: Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). The result of the Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was positive and significant relationship between transformational style and employee Job Satisfaction. However, the relationship between transactional leadership style and job satisfaction was observed to be negative and significant. This study provided validity evidence for the adapted instruments based on context of UAE universities, empirical evidence on the importance of leadership styles in enhancing job satisfaction among employees in higher education organizations. It is expected to be very helpful to faculty, academic leaders and supervisors as it might offer them new insights to facilitate better understanding and smooth functioning at the academic workplace. Investigating the Leadership Style Effect on the Technology Transfer Effectiveness: A Proposed New Model (An Applied Study on the Dairy Manufacturing Sector in Egypt)

<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>Different leadership styles' effects on technology transfer effectiveness have not been implied in the literature. This study seeks to theoretically investigate the effect of five leadership styles; Classified according to personal authority of the leader; On technology transfer effectiveness.</p><p><strong>Design/methodology/approach:</strong> This study identifies five leadership styles which affect technology transfer effectiveness including transformational leadership, transactional leadership, visionary leadership, charismatic leadership and culture based leadership. This study associates these five leadership styles to technology transfer effectiveness. A conceptual model is tested using a survey data collected from a sample of manufacturing plants in the dairy manufacturing sector in Egypt.</p><p><strong>Findings: </strong>The results indicate that only four leadership styles significantly affect technology transfer effectiveness. Visionary leadership style has the strongest significant effect on technology transfer effectiveness, followed by culture based leadership style, then charismatic leadership style then transactional leadership. Transformational leadership does not significantly affect technology transfer effectiveness.</p><p><strong>Research Limitation/Implications: </strong>Transformational leadership has been observed to have no significant effect on technology transfer effectiveness. A set of refined transformational leadership measures should be developed in future studies.</p><p><strong>Practical Implications:</strong> This paper identifies the importance of leadership styles in achieving the success of technology transfer.</p><p><strong>Originality/value: </strong>This study provides a theoretical foundation for the effect of the leadership styles on technology transfer effectiveness in the dairy manufacturing plants. This study is one of the first efforts that empirically examine the effect of leadership styles on technology transfer effectiveness.</p><p> </p>

In parallel with the rapid transformation of the world, there emerged some changes in both the approaches to leadershipand the information obtained. The importance of leadership style and psychosocial work environment to staff-assessed quality of care: implications for home help services

Work in home help services is typically conducted by an assistant nurse or nursing aide in the home of an elderly person, and working conditions have been described as solitary with a high workload, little influence and lack of peer and leader support. Relations between leadership styles, psychosocial work environment and a number of positive and negative employee outcomes have been established in research, but the outcome in terms of quality of care has been addressed to a lesser extent. In the present study, we aimed to focus on working conditions in terms of leadership and the employee psychosocial work environment, and how these conditions are related to the quality of care. The hypothesis was that the relation between a transformational leadership style and quality of care is mediated through organisational and peer support, job control and workload. A cross-sectional survey design was used and a total of 469 questionnaires were distributed (March-April 2012) to assistant nurses in nine Swedish home help organisations, including six municipalities and one private organisation, representing both rural and urban areas (302 questionnaires were returned, yielding a 65% response rate). The results showed that our hypothesis was supported and, when indirect effects were also taken into consideration, there was no direct effect of leadership style on quality of care. The mediated model explained 51% of the variance in quality of care. These results indicate that leadership style is important not only to employee outcomes in home help services but is also indirectly related to quality of care as assessed by staff members.
