As the knowledge-based economy has grown, effective Knowledge Management (KM) is becoming more and more crucial. Effective knowledge management is cited as a crucial element for any company seeking to maintain a sustained edge over competitors. To emphasize the importance of KM in organizations, the literature in the area is surveyed in this work. The study can demonstrate the significance of knowledge management factors in determining how well an organization performs as well as a vital instrument for its competitiveness, profitability and survival. For organizations to fully benefit from the value of knowledge, effective creation, management, sharing and utilization of knowledge are therefore essential. The study makes the argument that three essential elements people, procedures and technology must be considered if organizations are to manage knowledge effectively. Essentially, the goal of connecting people, processes and technology should be to leverage knowledge in favor to ensure the achievement of the organization.

Knowledge Management Capabilities on the Performance of Startup Companies: Evidence from Startups in Kerala

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to point out the importance of knowledge management in startup companies. For this, four knowledge management processes—knowledge acquisition, conversion, application, and protection—that may have an impact on startup companies' performance are closely examined.  Design, Methodology, and Approach: The empirical research was conducted by participating 250 startup companies that are registered in the Kerala startup mission from 2015 to 2020, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to determine the relationship between the knowledge management process and startup performance.  Findings: The study supports the resource-based view theory by stating that knowledge management is essential for newly established ventures. It has been found that both knowledge conversion and protection play significant roles in the performance of startup companies. While acquisition and application are insignificant.  Social Implication: This study has several implications, one of which is that institutions and government bodies should focus on implementing knowledge management strategies.  Research Limitation: The study has some drawbacks, including the fact that it only included 250 startup companies from Kerala and had a limited sample size. Therefore, generalizations in a global setting are challenging. Second, other intangible assets that fall beyond the scope of the study also have an impact on how well startup businesses perform.  Originality or Value: The study gives startup founders insight into how knowledge management is important at each stage of their firm's life cycle and affects their ability to raise startup funding.Paper Type: Research Paper

The overview of knowledge management for the benefits of service-based value in the university libraries:

There is an exclusive chance for university libraries to contribute to the future reimagining of library services. In this regard, the job of KM might be extremely successful. As a result, university libraries may provide excellent user services by utilizing KM. This research is to explore the existing models of Knowledge Management (KM) and how the existing models of KM are implemented at university libraries, to recognize how KM is being implemented at university libraries as reported in earlier research, and the benefits of KM practices for creating service value for libraries. This research was performed following the “Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA)” guidelines. The study found that a skilled workforce and expertise are required for effective KM implementation in university libraries. Outdated skills may serve as a starting point for KM in university libraries, but they are insufficient for providing service-based value. There is a need for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals to develop additional competencies for KM practice in university libraries. Based on the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that all the authors have recognized the importance of KM in libraries. This finding would aid the university libraries and offer current KM knowledge to other libraries. Therefore, this research would be an excellent addition to the application of KM in university libraries.

Delving into Stakeholders’ Perceptions of the Efficient Transition to the Circular Economy

The importance of knowledge management in facilitating a successful transition to a circular economy through the creation of a circular business model, as a substitute for the conventional linear economic approach, has not been extensively explored. The capacity of a company to coordinate, generate, and disseminate knowledge plays a crucial role in developing environmentally friendly industries and creating new employment opportunities. This article employs a literature review methodology to establish the connection between knowledge management and the shift towards a circular economy. The findings reveal that a company's eco-innovation process relies heavily on strategic knowledge management. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the system and self-motivated creativity are crucial components of expertise in creating sustainable circular business models. Hence, companies must consistently enhance their knowledge base to improve business processes, eco-efficiency, and eco-innovation.

Unlocking Sustainable Success in Saudi Arabia: The Interplay of Knowledge Management and Green Innovation

As organizations around the world address sustainability issues, increasing attention is being devoted to the role that knowledge management can play in encouraging ecologically desirable behavior. The primary goal of the study was to evaluate how knowledge management affects sustainable performance, with an emphasis on the mediating function of green innovation. Data were acquired from 275 managers and senior employees working in the oil, gas, electricity, water desalination, and minerals industries in Saudi Arabia. The primary method of data collection was a self-administered and online survey. Using the Advanced Structural Equation Modeling (AMOS) tool, the data were assessed, and a thorough examination of the connections between knowledge management, green innovation, and sustainable performance was created. According to the results, there is a direct link between knowledge management and sustained performance. Furthermore, it was discovered that green innovation acted as a mediating component in this relationship, shedding light on the advantages that knowledge management brought to green innovation and how those advantages benefitted sustainable performance. This study adds to the body of current literature by empirically proving the linkages between knowledge management, green innovation, and sustainable performance. It emphasizes how important knowledge management is in promoting environmentally friendly behaviors and provides practical advice for companies trying to match their strategy with sustainability goals.

Gathering and disseminating lessons learned in construction companies to support knowledge management

The importance of knowledge management (KM) in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry has risen with the improvement of information and communication technologies. However, the construction industry still struggles to capture and disseminate lessons learned. The present research explores this issue by using interviews and an online questionnaire, to provide updated information on lesson-learned procedures and their challenges in United States (US) construction companies. To do this, the authors have gathered industry professionals’ perceptions about lessons learned and methods used in their companies for harnessing and disseminating the knowledge generated by them. Our findings indicate that post-project evaluations are frequently conducted, utilize a two-step approach (review of materials followed by meetings), and are mainly organized by project managers. Most often, only key project team members are present in meetings to create a safe environment for discussion. Moreover, our findings echo previous research on the dissemination and reuse of lessons learned, indicating that these procedures are scattered and, most of the time, the information is not effectively reutilized. This suggests that US construction companies still need to revisit how information from lessons learned is currently being harnessed, stored, and especially shared (within and between companies) so that information can be effectively transformed into knowledge that can advance the AEC industry's productivity.

Knowledge Management in Higher Education in Vietnam: Insights from Higher Education Leaders — An Exploratory Study

This paper aims at increasing awareness of knowledge management (KM), its challenges as well as benefits in Higher Education (HE) system of Vietnam. An exploratory qualitative research design was deployed using semi-structured interviews. Nine senior institutional leaders from nine Vietnamese universities participated in the study. Thematic analysis, informed by the literature, was undertaken on English translated transcripts of the interviews. The findings shared senior HE leaders’ perspectives on how KM in higher education institutions (HEI) of Vietnam was being conceptualised and operationalised, as well as insights into how KM associates with six dimensions of HEIs’ performance so as to gear up KM’s benefits and anticipate challenges when a HEI embarking on the KM journey. Further research of different methods on the topic to enlighten the role of KM in HE system of Vietnam, and beyond, is recommended. The role and importance of KM is wildly recognised in business communities. However, studies exploring KM application in HE system remain scarce especially HE of developing countries. In Vietnam, no qualitative studies of KM in HEIs have been located. Vietnam is a nation on its way to transform from a state-based to market-driven economy; and a comprehensive education reform is deemed to shoulder the key task. KM deployment in the whole HE system is essential to comprehensive education reform and then to the global integration of its HE system. Besides, the study helps enrich the literature of KM in HE sector and provide insights of KM to campus chiefs, KM officers, administrator in HEIs.

Technology Transfer Model for Small-Scale Farms

Small-scale farms make an important contribution to food security, but they lack technification, especially in the global south. This article proposes a new model, namely, Model H, as a reference by which to facilitate technological transfer and appropriation in small producer sectors. Starting with the identification of interactions with the environment and the characterization of the transfer and appropriation process with respect to information and communication technologies, a five-stage framework is established to create and validate the new model. Based on key elements, functionalities, and five variables identified as a common ground for the transfer and appropriation of technologies, Model H is presented as a five-layer, user-centered model that aims to include in the transfer and appropriation of the solutions of all the individuals and entities that participate throughout the process. The model is validated through a pilot test using an intelligent irrigation technology called AgroRIEGO. In the process of technology transfer and appropriation, this pilot study helped to identify implementation obstacles and the importance of knowledge management as an effective channel for the exchange of information in a pertinent and timely manner.

An analysis of knowledge management practices at lilongwe university of agriculture and natural resources, Malawi

Knowledge management constitutes all the processes in which knowledge assets are mobilised to create value for an organisation. Knowledge is derived from information, which is processed data. In universities, knowledge is generated through research. The current study targeted academic and senior administrative staff at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). It was underpinned by the Socialisation Externalisation Combination and Internalisation (SECI) Knowledge Creation Model. Using a mixed-method approach, a survey and case study designs were used to collect data while a census was used to get a sample of 173. Quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and qualitative data were analysed thematically. Findings of the study revealed that LUANAR, Bunda Campus creates theses, dissertations, emails, memos, policies and minutes as the main types of explicit knowledge while expertise, skills and experiences as the main types of tacit knowledge. However, the curation of plant and animal specimens was identified as a special type of knowledge the University creates. The knowledge is mainly shared through emails and meetings which enhance research, teaching and facilitate learning, help in the curriculum development process and improve decision-making. On the other hand, the study unveiled that inadequate awareness about the importance of knowledge management, lack of top management support, lack of knowledge management policy and lack of knowledge management advocate/champion impede the knowledge management practices. Therefore, the study recommends that top management should initially identify a knowledge management advocate/champion to extensively conduct knowledge management awareness and drive the knowledge management agenda at the institution. The knowledge management champion should also initiate the development of a knowledge management policy and the establishment of a knowledge management unit to coordinate knowledge management activities.

Reflections on achievements, activities, and emerging issues of strategic nature within the current and future EURATOM RTD programme on radioactive waste management

This paper provides a review of and some reflections on radioactive waste management activities (including disposal) at the strategic level in connection with the ongoing ‘European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste management – EURAD’ and the European ‘PREDIS’ project on pre-disposal issues. The review took advantage of the large number of contributions made during the FISA 2022/EURADWASTE ’22 conference. The paper addresses the key characteristics of EURAD and PREDIS and highlights some of the key strengths of Joint Programming in supporting the member states with implementing waste management activities. Then, it discusses topics of strategic importance for waste management and the contributions of EURAD and PREDIS to these topics. This includes a summary of waste management strategies, the current status of implementing disposal solutions, the importance of knowledge management (taking the long duration of disposal programmes into account) and the importance of societal support of ongoing and future waste management activities. Finally, some remarks are made about issues of importance when organizing future joint activities on radioactive waste management at the European level.

This study investigates knowledge management in terms of its content, definition, and domain in theory and practice, as well as the challenges in the digital economy. This paper contributes to the existing literature on knowledge management as a moderator role in the research area.

Contribution to improvement of knowledge management in the construction industry - Stakeholders’ perspective on implementation in the largest construction companies

Knowledge management (KM) is crucial to ensure that business enterprises effectively leverage existing knowledge within the organization and produce faster and more effective decision-making. This article analyses the importance of KM in the construction industry in Portugal and investigates the perception of experienced professionals on the implementation of KM in this industry, its benefits, and restrictions to its implementation, and how knowledge is obtained and shared. A survey was conducted among experienced professionals working in the largest construction companies in Portugal—administrators, project managers, and budget officers. The validity and reliability of the results were achieved by statistically evaluating the respondents’ answers to the variables under study. From the analysis of the results, the relevance of KM is evident, and its greatest benefits are the sharing of information and the exchange of experiences. The lessons learned from completed projects and work meetings are pointed out as the most effective and usual ways to obtain knowledge, but there is a pressing need for a change in mentality to overcome the main barrier to the implementation of KM. This study aims to help construction companies in Portugal to develop strategies to implement KM and knowledge sharing.

The importance of knowledge management in gastronomy: a chef’s future career, the next generations of chefs and trends

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to shed new light on empirical and conceptual aspects related to chefs’ careers and the hospitality sector. The study examines how the future of the chef’s profession is perceived, how future generations of chefs could be developed and the main emerging trends within the chef’s scene.Design/methodology/approachSemi-structured, face-to-face, online and telephone interviews were conducted with 34 chefs operating in Australia and 35 in Vietnam.FindingsThe findings reveal ten dimensions that strongly adhere to knowledge management (KM) and the notions of the knowledge-based view of the firm. In addition, numerous differences in how the two groups perceived aspects of their careers transpire. Based on these findings, a conceptual framework was developed, with important theoretical and practical implications.Practical implicationsThe importance of KM through talent development, mentoring, creating a learning environment and enhancing problem-solving skills is highlighted.Originality/valueWhile scholarly works emphasise chefs’ value, importance and contributions, little is known about the links between their careers and KM. Furthermore, almost no study has compared chefs across geographic/cultural domains. The study addresses these research gaps and contributes to the conceptual understanding of KM within the chefs’ domain.

Knowledge about Competences Increasing Resilience to Crises in the Modern Business Sector: Results of the Polish University Project

The COVID-19 global pandemic has caused an unprecedented disturbance in higher education and the business services sector. In the 2014–2020 financial perspective, the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development has constituted a response to challenges and an instrument to execute the Europe 2020 Strategy. However, the Programme was not designed to prevent crises, and neither did it foresee the pandemic which surprised the whole world. Despite this, higher education institutions that implemented projects co-financed with the EU funds had to face the “black swan” and ensure the continuity of their activities while improving their resilience to crises. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how important knowledge management and resilience-building skills are for students to adapt and grow stronger in the face of a crisis. Does higher education teach crisis-resistant competences? As we know from practice and literature, the knowledge gap as regards crisis-resistant competencies is enormous, and the relevant university programmes require strengthening. Therefore, we conducted a literature review about knowledge management in complex crises and conducted research to identify competences that increase resilience to crises. The aim of the article was to examine to what extent the support implemented in the Polish university project contributed to the increase in indicators (output, direct result) and to what extent the level of competences of the project participants increased, including those competences that allowed the participants to adapt to the labour market during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the needs of the study, we used the competence balance method and the measurement of a degree of ratio implementation according to the criteria applied. The results of the study proved that the ratios rose and the project contributed to increasing competences in the project’s participants, improving their crisis resilience. The conclusions of the study allowed us to make recommendations regarding the emergent knowledge strategies about the European Union’s future agenda as well as about knowledge management and university training programs for resilient skills.

Unveiling the role of knowledge management capabilities in strategic emergency response: insights from the impact of COVID-19 on China’s new economy firms

PurposeThis paper aims to unveil the importance of knowledge management on a firm’s strategic emergency response during the great negative shock from global public health threats. Through analyzing how representative firms in China’s new economy industries dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic before, during and after the crisis, the significant problems confronted by these firms are pointed out, and the important role knowledge management capabilities played in solving these problems is proven.Design/methodology/approachThe open data of listed companies regarding the important role knowledge management played in firms’ strategic emergency response during the COVID-19 pandemic are qualitatively analyzed. Based on theoretical sampling, this paper selects representative samples of enterprises and analyzes the positive response measures they took after being hit by this public health event to gain qualitative insight into the importance of knowledge management capabilities in strategic emergency response.FindingsThree aspects of the important role of knowledge management capabilities in a firm’s strategic emergency response during the COVID-19 pandemic are introduced: before the crisis, firms should strengthen the acquisition, sharing and integration of knowledge so that they can intensify their monitoring for uncertain risks; during the crisis, firms should boost the transmission, transformation and diffusion of knowledge to improve emergency cooperation; and after the crisis, companies should reinforce knowledge evaluation, creation and application to enhance “immunity” in similar emergencies.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper has important implications for bolstering strategic emergency management practice and knowledge management capability among firms. Future research must focus on the following two aspects for further investigation: the dynamic relationship between firm knowledge management capability and strategic emergency response ability; and the collaboration system between firm knowledge management and strategic emergency response behaviors.Originality/valueThis paper discusses the important role knowledge management capabilities play in firms’ strategic emergency responses based on insights gained from the significant changes that the COVID-19 pandemic caused to representative Chinese new economy firms. By analyzing the three stages of before, during and after the emergency, this paper proposes the exact efforts that new economy companies should make in improving knowledge management capability.

THE EFFECT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAPABILITY, AND STRATEGIC PLANNING ON KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT MEDITED ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN THE ARMY CENTRAL IMPLEMENTING AGENCY

The purpose of this study is to provide input to the leadership of the Indonesian Army National Armed Forces Headquarters regarding the importance of knowledge management on technological developments because this knowledge is one way to create and improve work professionalism in the military, especially the Indonesian Armed Forces.The research design and method used in this research is hypothesis testing. This research is a quantitative non-experimental, using a questionnaire given to 93 respondents. This research was conducted at the Central Implementing Agency for the Indonesian National Armed Forces.The results of this study indicate that: The effect of Information Technology Capability, Strategic Planning on Organizational Performance is positive and significant. The influence of Knowledge Management on Organizational Performance is positive and significant. The influence of Knowledge Management mediating Information Technology Capability, Strategic Planning on Organizational Performance is positive and significant. It means that the higher/positive mediation of Knowledge Management on Information Technology Capability, Strategic Planning, the higher/positive Organizational Performance.Theoretical implications: Knowledge Management as a mediating of Information Technology Capability, Strategic Planning is able to improve Organizational Performance, by increasing Knowledge Management through increasing its dimensions it will be able to improve the Organizational Performance of the Central Implementing Body of the Indonesian Armed Forces.

Entrepreneurs’ Level of Awareness on Knowledge Management for Promoting Tourism in Nepal

Managing knowledge in the field of tourism and the hospitality industry will carry significant importance as most people are not aware of knowledge management (KM) implications. As the importance of knowledge management is not well captured in the tourism sector of Nepal, this study aims to identify the awareness level of knowledge management among the tourism entrepreneurs in Nepal and suggest managerial implications for the same. The primary data were collected through 276[Formula: see text]questionnaire surveys. Tourism entrepreneurs saw the benefits of KM for tourism development despite the costs and challenges it poses. Awareness of knowledge management of entrepreneurs differs according to the people, process, technology, organization structure, and the organization culture dimension. It was further influenced by the demographic characteristics of the tourism entrepreneurs. Enterprises are in more need of knowledge management awareness and several amendments in tourism development policies and programs. Therefore, this study recommends increasing entrepreneurs’ awareness of knowledge management by the joint effort of tourism enterprises and the Nepal Tourism Board. Various knowledge management seminars (integrating tourism experts with tourism entrepreneurs) and training programs should be conducted to manage knowledge effectively.

Creating Sustainable Organizations through Knowledge Sharing and Organizational Agility: Empirical Evidence from China

This study explores the relationships among knowledge sharing, adaptability, and performance, and furthermore seeks to address a gap in the existing literature on how those relationships may vary between organizational sectors. Economic sustainability for firms of all sizes and sectors is likely to depend to a large extent on the creation of a sustainable organizational culture built on collaboration, innovation, and adaptability. The importance of knowledge management in developing sustainable and higher functioning organizations is well accepted in the literature. Likewise, the ability of organizations to realize competitive advantage by adapting and responding in a timely manner to changes in the landscape is well supported. Building on previous research, this study further examines how organizations in different sectors may experience that interaction differently. Based on data gathered through 720 online surveys and subjected to empirical analysis, the findings suggest that work groups that are more agile can more readily realize the benefits of a knowledge sharing organization culture. Further, in contrast to the main body of existing literature, the findings indicate that there is little difference in these benefits among organizations operating in different sectors, notably, within the context of mainland China. These findings may be of interest to those with an interest in knowledge sharing, organizational agility, organizational behavior, sustainable organizations, collectivistic cultures, to practitioners with an interest in developing higher functioning organizations, and to social scientists in related research areas such as cultural studies and psychology.

Too much of a good thing? The unforeseen importance of knowledge management and role clarity as antecedents of service quality in private hospitals in Ghana

The effective management of employees’ knowledge has been described as a critical ingredient for organizations seeking to ensure sustainable strategic competitive advantage in the market place. The goal of the study was to examine how knowledge management affect workers' job clarity and service quality. The cross-sectional survey approach was used in this study while purposive sampling technique was employed to select private hospitals. The research included 300 employees from Trust Hospital, Otoo Memorial Hospital, and Cocoa Hospital, all of which are private institutions in Ghana. Data was collected using the questionnaire. The analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 and Structural equation modeling. The findings demonstrated that service quality and knowledge management had a beneficial association.
