Education for a Sustainable Future: The Impact of Environmental Education on Shaping Sustainable Values and Attitudes among Students

In the face of pressing global challenges, the role of education in shaping sustainable values and attitudes among students has become an urgent priority. This study delves into the immediate impact of education and awareness on students’ knowledge, values, and attitudes toward a sustainable future, with a specific focus on environmental education (EE). It examines various aspects of EE, including curriculum development, teacher training, environmental initiatives within educational institutions, and students’ comprehension of environmental issues. To understand the role of education in fostering a sustainable future, a 2-point Likert scale questionnaire was distributed to a randomly selected sample of 87 high school teachers. The results, analysed through multiple regression analysis, the chi-square test, the t-test, and Cronbach’s alpha value tests, underscore the urgent and significant role of EE in preparing children for a secure future. The study further highlights the increasing urgency and importance of EE in the face of climate change, positioning it as a crucial element for early childhood educational policies.

Estimating the economic value of environmental education: a case study of South Korea

Environmental education (EE) has received more and more attention worldwide. In Korea, there is a national consensus on the importance of EE; however, it is not as much of a priority as other education subjects or themes, based on annual survey results. This study asks how much value Korean citizens place on EE, revealing its value more objectively than the opinion survey. This study estimates citizens’ benefits from EE using the contingent valuation method (CVM) to elicit willingness to pay (WTP). The survey scenario detailed information about the Green Movable EE Classroom program managed by the South Korean Ministry of Environment, and its 1,004 participants comprised a representative sample of Korea. The results are as follows. If the average household’s annual WTP (KRW 17,575; USD 14.85) were expanded to the total number of Korean households, the total benefit would be about KRW 367.2 billion (USD 310 million) per year. This result can be interpreted as citizens being willing to pay that amount for EE. This study estimated the economic value and is the first empirical attempt to reveal the value of EE nationwide. This study expands the theoretical discussion of the value of EE and provides evidence for policy revision.

Review of causes, consequences and response measures against forest fires: a focus on the state of Jalisco

The present literary analysis compiles and examines relevant and up-to-date information about the causes, consequences,and response strategies (preventive, monitoring, and post-incident) in forest fires, with special attention to the case ofJalisco and its protected natural area "Bosque la Primavera." Various causes are presented, as well as the influence ofclimate change on the increased likelihood of this phenomenon. Environmental impacts (air, soil, flora, and fauna) arehighlighted, along with the diverse strategies to address forest fires, both at the national and international levels. Thesestrategies include public initiatives, such as fire management policies, scientific proposals like the use of technology forearly fire detection, and the importance of environmental education and community involvement. Additionally, the mostrelevant programs related to fire management in Mexico and Jalisco are mentioned, conducting an analysis comparingthese with trends in response measures to forest fires. Wildfire management is a global challenge. In Jalisco, traditional, technological, and governmental methods are combined; nevertheless, further research is crucial to enhance actions and management related to forests and fire.

Zero Waste Knowledge and Behavior of Early Childhood Pre-Service Teacher in Science Education

The importance of environmental education needs to be integrated with science learning related to zero waste topics. Environmental topics related to zero waste need to be understood by early childhood pre-service teachers because teachers are an important subject in providing understanding to young children regarding the environment. This research aims to describe environmental knowledge and zero waste behavior in early childhood pre-service teachers. The method used in this research is a descriptive method through data collection techniques using surveys. The instruments used in this research were 2 types, namely test questions used to measure environmental knowledge and questionnaires used to measure zero waste behavior. The results of this research show that the average zero waste knowledge score of early childhood pre-service teachers is still in the very low category (32.87). The average zero waste behavior score for early childhood pre-service teachers is in the moderate category (65.83). The results of this research show how important environmental education related to zero waste is integrated with science education. The recommendation from this research is to be able to develop media that can be integrated into zero-waste learning.

Environmental education aims to tackle the diminishing engagement between human beings and the natural environment, identify possible remedies, and facilitate positive transformations. Within the context of the early twenty-first century, there has been a growing acknowledgment, both at a worldwide level and particularly among nations of the Global South, regarding the importance of environmental education in understanding, mitigating, and resolving diverse environmental challenges that exist in different communities. Environmental literature plays a significant role in facilitating environmental education. Stories are not only enjoyable for readers but, in their unique ways, build on the emotional connections necessary for enabling understanding. The present article examines Bessie Head’s first novel, When Rain Clouds Gather (Edinburgh: Pearson, 1968) as a compelling work of environmentalism. In delineating the detrimental outcomes resulting from Western concepts of development and colonial intervention in African ecosystems, the novel emphasises the need to question Western epistemic hegemony. It inculcates critical thinking, leading to an understanding of the deeper politics of environmental degeneration in Africa. This article focuses on how the novel exhibits a forward-thinking quality by highlighting the necessity to decolonise and demonstrating methods and narratives around growth and transformation. These are too often assumed to be universal. Finally, the article establishes that literary works of this nature accentuate engagement with indigenous stories, perceptions, and knowledge forms to achieve sustainability in contemporary times.

Dolphin Conservation in Pengelana Laut Short Story: Greg Garrard's Ecocriticism Study

The short story "Pengelana Laut" by Linda Christanty focuses on the theme of preserving dolphins. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the environmental phenomena and the importance of environmental education in the story. This qualitative design presents descriptive data using the Grag Garrard ecocritical approach. The primary data source is the short story "Pengelana Laut," published in Kompas newspaper and ruangsastra.com, containing words, phrases, and sentences related to marine ecological phenomena, collected using the literature study techniques. The data obtained were analyzed using interactive interpretive models involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verifying. The NVivo software program was used to code the data. The result showed that the short story contains various environmental phenomena, such as pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and earth, with a focus on the exploitation of dolphins by humans. In conclusion, environmental education is crucial for dolphin conservation, hence it is imperative to incorporate such material in literacy skills for students to cultivate a sense of concern for and environmental preservation of marine life.

There is no doubt that environmental education at an early age is significant for human development. When we refer to an early age, we mean the preschool and the primary stage of education (preschool education institution and primary school). It is obvious that the foundations of personality are formed at this stage, primarily a positive attitude towards nature and the surrounding world. At this stage, the child begins to distinguish himself from the environment, an emotional and value attitude towards the environment, nature, himself, and other people, etc., is formed. On the other hand, knowledge corresponding to a certain age of a personality (e.g., ecological), norms and rules of interaction with nature are required, on the other hand, it is extremely important to develop empathy for nature through various activities (e.g., actively solving certain environmental problems). It can be reasonably stated that the formation of values, nature cognition and a sustainable lifestyle are three essential factors determining (describing) the importance of environmental education. Thus, environmental education at an early age not only helps to develop environmental awareness but also promotes abilities and the attitude, which can determine a sustainable and responsible lifestyle in the future. From this point of view, the continuity and sustainability of this education is extremely significant. Environmental education in primary school can have a long-term effect on children’s moral and worldview behaviour and contribute to sustainable development and global well-being. The period of primary education is a suitable and favourable environment for the formation of children’s positive and rational attitude towards the environment, promoting environmental awareness and developing a sustainable lifestyle.

Application and Effectiveness Evaluation of Environmental Education in Preschool Education

With the increasing seriousness of environmental problems, the importance of environmental education is increasingly recognized, especially in preschool education. Environmental education can not only help children understand environmental issues and develop their environmental awareness but also enhance their environmental skills and behaviors through practical activities. However, how to effectively conduct environmental education and how to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental education have been issues of concern to the education and research communities. Through a review of teaching methods, curriculum design, and assessment methods of environmental education, this paper attempts to explore these issues and provide references for the implementation of preschool environmental education.

Raising Students’ Awareness on Environmental Education Issues

Environmental education is an important issue that is one of the topics at various levels of education throughout the world. The importance of environmental education as one of the best solution for preventing environmental damage.This study aims to analyze students’ awareness on environmental education issues in a pulic university. This case study research involve specific students who enroll in environmental education class. The total students who enroll in this study class is 47 students. The data collection instrument for this study is through google form questionnaires containing 18 items of awareness on environmental education issues. The instruments used in this study was pre-tested to ensure the credibility of the result of the study. The analysis approach of the questionnaire used Ms Excell tool for the percentage and then they are thematically placed in the results. The result of the study is that the research encounters two important themes: awareness on knowledge of environmental education and awareness of action on environmental education issues. The implication of the study is that there is a need to integrate both compulsory and voluntary programs from students from different levels of education aiming to raise students awareness on environmental education issues.

Theory of planned behavior to analyze students’ intentions in consuming tap water

Increased consumption of bottled water has a negative impact on the environment due to plastic waste. This study intends to assess the perceptions of Indonesian students toward tap water. This cross-sectional survey was conducted online using an online questionnaire. From 1,034 undergraduate students, our findings revealed that Indonesian students had a relatively low rate of bottled water consumption. Employing the framework of the theory of planned behavior, all factors were recognized as significant factors driving tap water consumption. Students who reported drinking two or fewer bottles of water per week perceive that tap water is safe and clean for consumption is practical, and has almost the same color, taste, and smell as bottled water. Students concede that consuming tap water is a habit and consider this action necessary to preserve the environment. As observed from demographic characteristics, students’ fields of study affect the choice of drinking water. This study has contributed to uncovering the identified factors that determine the habits of students consuming tap water. Apart from the importance of environmental education, increasing the availability of ready-to-drink tap water facilities and disseminating information regarding the benefits and safety of consuming this water are also important factors in reducing the use of bottled water.

Option or necessity: Role of environmental education as transformative change agent

There is a consensus around the importance of environmental education in mitigating the ill effects of environmental problems and preserving the natural environment and promoting green behaviours. The present paper studies the role of environmental education based on transformative learning theory. It intends to present and test a model proposal using sequential mediation analysis of several constructs as the Environmental Education Support (EES) and Volunteer Attitude (VA). A quantitative study was carried out by using data obtained through online questionnaires from several Indian and Brazilian Higher Education Institutions. A multivariate statistical method was employed to analyse the data by using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results demonstrated that environmental education positively influences students’ environmental concern, willingness to be environmentally friendly, and volunteer attitude. As a novelty, it reports that environmental education beliefs, concern for the environment and willingness to be environmentally friendly sequentially mediate the relationship between environmental education support and volunteering attitude.

A SURVEY OF EFFECTIVENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT POST HIGHER SECONDARY LEVEL IN KOLKATA

The study focuses on the effectiveness of environmental education at post higher secondary levels in Kolkata at the present moment. The research seeks to find the extent to which the post higher secondary level students in Kolkata are acquainted with the present challenges of environmental issues, faced due to anthropogenic factors that are impacting the environment in direct and indirect manners. Environmental education and educating students on the need of protecting the environment play a vital role towards sustainability. Environmental education, provided as a compulsory course in the curriculum, at different levels of educational institutions, has been leaving an important impact on training and preparing the future generation for a greener and sustainable society. The purpose of this study is to examine the knowledge, perception, attitude, relationship and environmental behaviour of post higher secondary level students who have enrolled in different specialized fields of study in colleges in Kolkata. A total of 70 students participated in this survey, conducted in colleges in Central Kolkata. To collect data for measuring students' environmental education, perception, their attitudes towards environment, and behaviour, responses in written form based on questionnaires were recorded. In this study, it was revealed that students receiving academic education at post higher secondary levels are acquainted with the environmental challenges faced in the present days and they are also acquainted with the concept of 'sustainable living'. As a result of the t-test performed, it was put forward that there was no difference in the levels of students' perception regarding the importance of environmental education. As a result of the correlation analysis, a positive relation was identified between the perception, attitude, and behaviour variables.

The article analyzes the culturological features of the national education system. Particular attention is paid to defining the importance of environmental education. The paper also describes the influence of the education system on the formation of multicultural, national-patriotic, environmental competencies. The study is formed on the basis of the use of both general theoretical methods and the use of special pedagogical methods: observation, specification, modeling. Using the historical method of research, the article traces the peculiarities of the interpretation of culture from the XIX century. to the present. Some attention in the work is focused on empirical methods of collecting and interpreting information. The results emphasize that the culturological foundations of the national education system need further study. This is due to modern paradigms of development of world cultural science, new digital technologies, the peculiarities of the functioning of modern polyethnic communities. In addition, the national system of education in the cultural spirit influences the formation of environmental competencies by educating a tolerant and democratic attitude to the world. Awareness and intolerance of society to non-environmental behavior affect the transformation of the environmental situation in general. Children who have received a thorough environmental education begin to actively promote the ecological way of life in adult life. In addition, children, in contrast to adults, have a greater increase in intolerance to environmental crimes.

Environmental problems have caused great damage to nature and are mainly due to the inadequate action of man, which has contributed to the degradation of the environment. The present work carried out together with the students of the Rural School of Poços, located in the municipality of Cumaru - PE aims to analyze the importance of environmental education in the school environment and show how it can be a tool for environmental awareness and mitigation of damage caused by man. Environmental education is a participatory and continuous process of society, fundamental to critical awareness about existing environmental problems. The concern for the environment reveals that we are living in a moment of imbalance and disharmony, caused by society itself. Thus, it is necessary that there is a search to achieve a balance between the relationship between man and nature, aiming to seek sustainable alternatives and change behavior in the face of this problem. From this, environmental education is a tool for behavior change, aiming to achieve sustainable development based on actions, conceptions and changes in habit, aiming at a more harmonious relationship with the planet. The methodology of this work will be bibliographic research through articles and books found in websites and libraries. Environmental education allows a critical awareness of society about environmental issues and is a tool that aims at new environmental attitudes, practices of environmental precepts and minimization of damage caused to nature. With this, society adopts solutions to mitigate the problems it causes, contributing to the reduction of disasters and minimization of environmental degradation.

Disciplinary view of the environmental education practice and its dissociation with non-formal teaching spaces: a discourse analysis of higher education students

This research analyzed the perception of 42 higher education students about Environmental Education (EE) activities in environmental management and explored spontaneous conceptions about an urban green park. Data were obtained in 2016 through a questionnaire based on the Free Word-Association Test methodology and analyzed by the Collective Subject Discourse. In the students conception, the importance of EE as a process of environmental management is imperative, being seen as an instrument or tool for raising awareness among the population. As a management instrument, EE seems to assume a technical and disciplining character, and as a tool to raise awareness among the population, it reflects the utilitarian model of society, favorable to the principles of a conservative EE. The association test showed that the studied urban green park was represented mainly by the words “degradation” and “natural,” showing dichotomous and biologizing trends. The results indicate the need to adopt activities that allow transposing the experiences presented by the students. It will contribute to the construction of a more critical, emancipatory EE that is really focused on the complex environmental agenda.

The article considers in detail the need for environmental knowledge for the formation of environmental consciousness and culture in higher education. The current environmental situations in the field of education, upbringing and formation of environmental consciousness, which affect the problems of preserving and restoring the environment, are highlighted. The solution of global environmental problems, the achievement of sustainable development and environmental safety of territories is impossible without the foundation of the foundations of the culture of nature management and environmental education of the population. Possible points of view on the nature of the educational process are shown and argued, allowing to integrate the body of knowledge gained in practice. The features of design technologies are disclosed and the advantages of its use in the training of specialists from the point of view of professional development are given. The article is devoted to the actualization and importance of environmental education, with the aim of shaping the environmental consciousness and culture of the population, for the processing of sustainable development of society. One of the important directions related to the solution of environmental problems at the present stage is environmental education and upbringing of students and the formation of environmental culture. Environmental education, both in the world and in Russia, is today considered a priority for teaching and educating students at all levels of education. We substantiated the relevance and interconnection of environmental education and upbringing, disclosed their essence, tasks, content, principles, forms and methods of work; the analysis of the state is given, the mechanism of development of certain aspects of the problem is characterized, etc. Achieving sustainable development and environmental safety of territories, solving global environmental problems is impossible without the foundation of the foundations of a culture of nature management and environmental education of the population. The variant used in the training of specialists in any field of the national economy has shown high efficiency in the formation of practice-oriented competencies of graduates of higher educational institutions.

Our SARS-CoV-2 teacher: Teachings of the pandemic about our relations with the more-than-human world

In this manuscript we present a critical analysis of the current pandemic moment, shifting the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the role of teacher, thus reflecting on possible learnings from the reality in which we are inserted. This perspective is located within the new materialism, in which we consider the agency of the more-than-human world. To do so, we revisit data from our previous research that demonstrate how occupying and frequenting urban green areas are fundamental to human formation and relationships. We discuss the implications of the restrictions experienced during the pandemic, in the political, ethical, and aesthetic context of Brazil and point out the importance of environmental education in the reconstruction of the post-pandemic world and the need to incorporate ethical and aesthetic values into educational experiences.
