Perception of entrepreneurship as alternative to facing the post-pandemic crisis

This article aims to identify the perception of a group of incubated projects about the importance of entrepreneurship as alternative to face the economic crisis due to the new coronavirus pandemic. Entrepreneurship is a transversal subject to many areas of research and has been the object of study within themes such as economic, technological and innovation. The crisis in several sectors caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus, raised other research possibilities. With a qualitative approach and through the case study method, using a structured questionnaire, it sought to investigate a group of companies/projects incubated in a technology-based business incubator, in the municipality of Mossoró in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. With the results, it was possible to verify that incubated have a positive perception about the importance of entrepreneurship in facing the crisis, thus pointing out that it is an alternative for the post-pandemic crisis period.

Corruption and Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries

The importance of entrepreneurship as a driver of economic development cannot be denied. Nevertheless, developing countries suffer from unsatisfactory entrepreneurship level, partially explained the low economic growth. Given the main attribute of developing countries, which is highly corrupted, this study empirically investigates the effect of corruption on entrepreneurship in 48 developing countries from 2008-2016. By using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator, the results show that an increase in corruption will promote more new business start-ups suggesting that in highly corrupted countries, potential entrepreneurs may observe that the only way to start a business is to bribe government officers to get licenses, permits and business approval. Therefore, a proactive role of government in effectively reducing and eventually eliminating corruption to create a more conducive environment for entrepreneurs to grow up is very critical.

Entrepreneurship as a multidisciplinary phenomenon: culture and individual perceptions in business creation

Dada la importancia del fenómeno, el objetivo de esta investigación es analizar las dimensiones psicológica y sociológica del emprendimiento a través de los factores que explican las percepciones individuales y la cultura de apoyo al emprendimiento.Diseño/metodología/enfoqueA partir de datos GEM obtenidos mediante la Encuesta de Población Adulta (N = 2,500) en Andalucía (España), se desarrolla una metodología cuantitativa, concretamente un análisis multivariante basado en regresiones lineales de cuatro etapas.ResultadosLas variables consideradas no explican en la misma medida la dimensión psicológica y la sociológica. Se evidencia la existencia de homogeneidad cultural interprovincial, la importancia de las variables sociodemográficas y la influencia de las expectativas y las experiencias vinculadas al emprendimiento, especialmente en la formación de percepciones individuales.Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigaciónSe propone la réplica del estudio a nivel nacional e internacional para ahondar en las diferencias culturales que condicionan la creación empresarial. The Importance of Entrepreneurship in Joining Business World During COVID 19 Pandemic for Karang Taruna Members of Karanganyar Regency

This extension activity was conducted for Karang Taruna Kel. Tawangmangu, Kec. Tawangmangu, Kab. Karanganyar. The outcomes of this activity are: cheap participants' knowledge of the concept of entrepreneurship so that they have the right knowledge; benefit participants' insights on how to start a business and choose the right type of business; benefit participants' insights about possible business failures and ways to enter and resolve business failures.
 This activity is carried out with the following stages: Selection of participants to the community service, namely the board and members of Karang Taruna; Submission of lecture materials, with a view to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit; Implementation of evaluation Evaluation is done by: before counseling conducted a question-answer to know each participant's initial knowledge about entrepreneurship special techniques or how to start a business. After the counseling finished the question and answer again about the same material. By comparing the results of answers that have been done, it will be known whether there is an increase in knowledge about the entrepreneurship and scope.

Önlisans Öğrencilerinin Girişimcilik Eğilimlerinin Belirlenmesine Yönelik Bir Araştırma

Ülke ekonomilerinin olmazsa olmaz yapı taşlarından olan girişimcilerin önemi her geçen gün artmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda üniversiteler vermiş oldukları eğitim ile sürece değerli katkılar sunmaktadır. Üniversite öğrencileri potansiyel birer girişimci adayı olarak değerlendirilebilir. Bu çalışma, üniversitelerin önlisans programlarında öğrenim görmekte olan öğrencilerin girişimcilik eğilimlerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklem grubunu Adıyaman Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Meslek Yüksekokulu’ nda öğrenim gören öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Nicel araştırma yönteminin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada, açıklayıcı araştırma tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Veri toplamak üzere anket yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada kullanılan anket formu iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde ankete katılan öğrencilerin demografik özelliklerini belirlemeye yönelik 8 soru yer almaktadır. İkinci bölümde ise katılımcıların girişimcilik eğilimini ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla Yılmaz ve Sünbül’ün (2009) üniversite öğrencilerine yönelik geliştirmiş olduğu “Üniversite Öğrencilerine Yönelik Girişimcilik” ölçeğinden faydalanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi için SPSS 22.00 istatistik analiz programı kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilere keşfedici faktör analizi, güvenilirlik analizi, frekans analizi, bağımsız örneklem t testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizleri uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına bakıldığında, demografik değişkenler açısından girişimcilik eğilimi alt boyutlarının (özgüven, kontrol odağı, fırsatları kullanma, yenilikçilik, risk alma, başarma arzusu), katılımcıların girişimcilik eğilimi üzerine anlamlı bir farklılık ortaya çıkarmadığı görülmüştür.

The Importance of Entrepreneurship on Economic Development. Evidence From the OECD Countries

The process of a country's economic growth and development is a very complex phenomenon, influenced by numerous factors, which has attracted the attention of researchers and policymakers over time. Several studies highlight the important role of entrepreneurship on economic growth, by introducing innovative technologies, creating new products, promoting new jobs and employment opportunities, but also improving competition and competitiveness. Although the impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth has been broadly analysed in the economic literature over the recent years, few studies have examined the impact of entrepreneurship on economic development. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap, using the Human Development Index (HDI) as a suitable proxy for measuring economic development, taken from the United Nations statistics. HDI is a composite measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development, such as, life expectancy, education level and standards of living. On the other hand, Entrepreneurship is measured by Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) taken from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which expresses the percentage of population with age between 18 and 64, who are either a nascent entrepreneur or owner-manager of a new business. The empirical model is drawn from the endogenous growth theory, assuming that entrepreneurship and human capital skills are the key drivers of economic development, along with capital stock. The empirical analysis is based on unbalanced panel data regressions for a sample of 37 OECD countries using annual data for the period 2000-2018. Estimating a dynamic panel data model by using the GMM two-step system approach, we obtain evidence indicating the positive association between the development level and entrepreneurship, as well as the positive impact of human capital and capital stock on development. Our empirical results are in line with the endogenous growth theory approach, showing that entrepreneurship can be considered as an additional factor input in the countries’ economic development pathway.

On the Worth of Entrepreneurship Education: Entrepreneurship beyond Entrepreneurship?

Decades of research at the nexus of economics, management, and public policy suggest that entrepreneurship spurs innovation (Acs & Audretsch 1990; Baumol, 2002), creates jobs (Davidsson, Delmar, & Wiklund, 2006), and drives economic growth (Malecki, 2018). Given the importance of entrepreneurship, it is no surprise that over the past decades, academic institutions worldwide have invested extensive resources in developing an array of entrepreneurship offerings (Katz, 2003). Despite the growing popularity of entrepreneurship education, some continue to question whether entrepreneurship can be taught in a formal educational setting, particularly given the traditional structure of higher education vis-à-vis the fluid needs of aspiring entrepreneurs (Aronsson 2004; Bhatia & Levina, 2020; Fiet, 2000). In addition, there remains a paucity of evidence supporting the link between entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurial outcomes, and most notably, the creation of new ventures (Pittaway & Cope, 2007). As a result, the relationship between entrepreneurship education and new business formation remains inconclusive (Patzelt, Williams, & Shepherd, 2014). In this symposium, we bring together an international group of entrepreneurship education scholars who will lead us in discussion to explore the value of entrepreneurship education and consider pedagogies and approaches that best support the learning of students aspiring to engage in entrepreneurship. These questions are particularly pertinent to the 2020 AOM Theme of “Creating a Better World Together” as entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education have an important role to play in building new organizations that are poised to partner to address societal challenges, environmental degradation, and build a “new normal.”

대학생의 기업가정신이 형식학습과 무형식학습의 순차적 매개로 진로탄력성에 미치는 영향

Objectives In an era of increasing uncertainties in the vocational society, the effect of entrepreneurship on career resilience was analyzed through the dual mediating effect of formal and informal learning in order to propose a method to increase career resilience. Methods To this end, 824 four-year college students in the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas were tested to measure entrepreneurship, formal learning, informal learning, and career resilience. The analysis was performed with a bootstrap using SPSS 22 and PROCESS macro 3.3. Results Entrepreneurship had a significant effect on career resilience, and it was confirmed that formal and informal learning had not only a mediating effect but also a sequential double mediating effect in the relationship between entrepreneurship and career resilience. In addition, the innovative initiative of entrepreneurship had a positive effect on the individual and job factors of career resilience, but did not affect the social factors. The risk-taking of entrepreneurship had a significant effect on the personal, job, and social factors of career resilience. Conclusions By confirming that college students' entrepreneurship affects formal learning, informal learning, and career resilience, the scope of academic research on the effect of entrepreneurship was expanded, suggesting implications for youth and college students' entrepreneurship education research. In addition, the importance of entrepreneurship and learning was proposed as a specific method to increase career resilience of college students.

Women entrepreneurs’ persistence at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic: a decision-making perspective

PurposeDecision-making is of utmost importance for entrepreneurs. One of the most important entrepreneurial decisions is the decision to persist, which under certain circumstances such as a high level of adversity may seal the fate of entrepreneurs’ businesses. Nevertheless, the main antecedents of the decision to persist among entrepreneurs have remained understudied. This dearth of research is more obvious with respect to women entrepreneurs, especially in developing countries. To address this gap, this paper aims to explore the main antecedents of the decision to persist among women entrepreneurs.Design/methodology/approachBy adopting a narrative approach, data were collected through a combination of semi-structured and in-depth questions with a sample of Iranian women entrepreneurs founding and running small businesses offering services in a variety of sectors and analysed by narrative data analysis.FindingsAccording to the findings, the pandemic-emanated uncertainty, personal attachment to one’s venture as well as the reluctance of being blamed by one’s family, and the fear of the unknown future were the main drivers of the decision to persist among the entrepreneurs.Originality/valueThis paper offers two novel contributions to the extant literature. This paper is a pioneer not only in exploring entrepreneurs’ decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic but also in studying the decision to persist in the context of the developing nations.

Political roots leading to opportunity recognition among Latin American social entrepreneurs

PurposeThe purpose of this study was twofold. First, the author sought to more fully understand the role of socio-political activity on opportunity recognition among experienced entrepreneurs. Second, the author sought to better understand how socio-political activism, experience, entrepreneurial passion and social entrepreneurial intention are antecedents. Given the importance of entrepreneurship in the developing nations, there must be an understanding of how entrepreneurs recognize opportunities.Design/methodology/approachThis study analyzes how socio-political activism acts as a foundation on which entrepreneurs can recognize opportunity through entrepreneurial passion, experience and intention. The author utilized a survey constructed of a unique combination of existing and well-researched instruments. Entrepreneurs living in Latin America were surveyed through the web-based survey company Prolific(R). Based on an a priori power calculation, the survey was fielded to 305 respondents with a 100% response rate.FindingsThe model suggests that socio-political activism increases experience, entrepreneurial passion and social entrepreneurial intention among entrepreneurs in Latin America. Further, the model indicates that entrepreneurial passion and entrepreneurial experience have partial mediation effects on social entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, while social entrepreneurial intention has full mediation effects on social entrepreneurial opportunity recognition.Practical implicationsThe findings of this model suggest that socio-political activism in the developing context provides a model that shows how political activism plays a crucial role in numerous entrepreneurial aspects. Being active politically, gives entrepreneurs greater passion, experience and intention which in turn leads to greater opportunity recognition and mediates the relationship between socio-political activism and opportunity recognition.Originality/valueThe model presented in this research is original and helps shape the paradigm within social entrepreneurship in the developing context. The model also provides additional antecedents of opportunity recognition which may assist with shaping future research in the developing context and how the role of political activism assists the field's understanding of how entrepreneurs recognize opportunities.

Investigating the Motivating Factors of Youths-Students Interest to Become Entrepreneurs: A Case of Anambra State, Nigeria

This study explored the factors that motivates the youth’s interest (intention) to become entrepreneurs by incorporating the personality attributes from the “Theory of planned behavior” and environmental factors, with some selected “control variables” (experience, gender, and age). A multivariate statistical technique was used to test the relationship between the variables using “Structural Equation Modeling” AMOS Package version 23. A sample of 400 students from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu university in Anambra State, Nigeria was used to analyze the data. The results of the study indicated that attitude, self-efficacy, and subjective norms have a statistically significant effects on student’s entrepreneurial interest. The findings also indicated that entrepreneurial education has an impact on students’ attitude but has no obvious effect on intention. Apart from government support policy which was found to have statistical negative effect on intention, other external barriers have no effect on attitude and intention. Understanding these factors is important to make recommendations to the government and other relevant stakeholders to promote youths’ entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The importance of entrepreneurship is not only vital for economic growth but also for long term sustainable development. Through the vital information gained from investigating these motivating factors of youth’s interest to engage in entrepreneurship, the government and other important stakeholders can formulate effective policies to improve macroeconomic conditions to encourage university students to become entrepreneurs.

What drives internationalization of new ventures? Evidence from India

The researchers have already recognized the importance of entrepreneurship, but the role of new venture internationalization is still a matter of research. This study is measuring the influence of education, age, technology, fear of failure, and competition on new venture internationalization. It based on the interviews of 3413 respondents from India done by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. The influence of various factors on new venture internationalization has been measured through logistic regression. The technology, fear of failure, and competition have a significantly positive influence on new venture internationalization. This is one of the inceptive studies to measure the impact of education, age, technology, fear of failure and competition on new venture internationalization.

Furthermore, this product manufacturing program is an activity to create new products so the team decides to carry out product manufacturing practices.In the product marketing program, this activity is directed to market products to social media so that it is announced to do product marketing through social media by residents. Increasing public awareness of the Entrepreneurship program which is quite encouraging.The entrepreneurship program can be said to be successful because of the 30% of residents who have not dared to carry out entrepreneurial activities after entrepreneurship socialization, it can increase to 70%. This is based on observations by the service team. The increase in public awareness of the product manufacturing program can be said to be successful because of the 50% of residents who have not yet made the product, it has increased to 70% after the team has practiced product making. The Importance of Entrepreneurship in Micro and Small Enterprises in Uncertainty and Barrier Scenarios

Economic, political, and technological uncertainties require organizations to prepare adequately for new events that occur each day. Economic crisis, changes in the policies of each country and technological developments are classic examples of these changes in organizations. Seasonality is one of the economic phenomena that occur, and different forms of management are required. The seasonality that is described as a systematic and temporal imbalance of the tourist phenomenon that does not need to be regular, caused by the climate or by the vacation periods, and is based on the consumer behavior that can be expressed in terms of the number of visitors, traffic, highways, jobs, and tickets at attractions. Therefore, through a careful analysis of seasonality, it is possible that the losses are predicted, and the negative impact is not so grotesque on the company. For this, it is good that the manager uses the cost assessment methods to assume the seasonality of sales and thus be able to guard against the negative effects of the same. The objective of this research is to understand how owners of micro and small businesses in coastal cities consider themselves entrepreneurs or not and how they deal with obstacles such as seasonality through cost management. The methodology used was based on an exploratory and bibliographic research with a qualitative approach, seeking to analyze the triad: Entrepreneurship, Seasonality and Cost Management. The field research was applied through a semi-structured questionnaire to the sample of 100 Microentrepreneurs in the trade of goods and services in Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião, central cities of the North Coast of São Paulo. The main results show that most of the interviewed entrepreneurs perceive a certain impact caused by seasonality, understand the use of Cost Management to improve their processes and are adapted to one of the main costing methods highlighted by the bibliography.

In this article, the role and importance of entrepreneurship in improving the welfare of the population, the problems that arise in the development of the entrepreneurial sector, the level of living conditions of the population and the innovative directions of the use of entrepreneurship in the provision of employment and the relationship to entrepreneurship are analyzed in a scientifically based way. And the conclusions and proposals on the use of innovative directions for the solution of problems are discussed.

With the development of the market economy, the importance of entrepreneurship is increasing both at the state level and at the regional level. Business entities make a significant contribution to the development of the economy, creating added value, jobs, investing in fixed assets. The overall result of entrepreneurship is characterized by the level of entrepreneurial activity, so effective management of it is now particularly relevant. However, entrepreneurial activity remains unchanged in different time periods and has different intensity in different regions. The reasons for this are that the degree of entrepreneurial activity is influenced by various factors that must be taken into account after taking state regulatory measures. The business environment is an integrated set of factors that shape the possibility and ability of entrepreneurship to exist and contribute to its activity and economic development. The factors of the business environment determine the effectiveness of the functioning of this environment, which affects the ability of the business to carry out activities, and even determines the activity of these activities. Therefore, the development of entrepreneurship primarily depends on the study of factors. At the same time, these factors, on the one hand, determine the position of small business entities on the market, and on the other hand, they contribute to or hinder the successful creation, long-term functioning and development of entrepreneurial activity. Factors that affect the state of entrepreneurial activity form a special entrepreneurial environment in the region, which can be both favorable and unfavorable for the implementation of entrepreneurial activity. State authorities, based on the classification of these factors, are able to identify the most problematic areas of interaction between entrepreneurship support institutes and the entrepreneurial sector of the economy, which restrain the development of the regional entrepreneurial environment, as well as use the data of the proposed classification to formulate long-term and short-term goals of socio-economic development of regions and development a set of measures for their further implementation.

THE ACADEMIC JOURNEY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS. THE SYSTEMS THEORY APPROACH

In its fifth report, South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), published on 31 March 2020, called for institutions to carefully investigate undergraduate business education (curricula) after the business, economics, and management studies (in the Classification of Educational Subject Matter (CESM)) category presented the highest dropouts and lowest throughput rates. To understand the academic journey of entrepreneurship students, this study reviewed the literature through the lens of the General Systems Theory (GST), together with Tuckman’s (1999) Tripartite Model of Motivation for Achievement (TMMA). Accordingly, this study viewed the journey of students as a dynamic system with the students having some characteristics and motivations (inputs) when entering higher education, and what the higher education institutions should do (processes) to achieve improved academic performance (output) of students. From the literature reviewed, this study suggests the need to profile students based on their pre-enrolment information and capturing the perceptions of what they think influenced their academic performance in high school. Apart from this, the need to understand the entrepreneurial profile of students has been suggested considering the importance of entrepreneurship in employment creation, especially in South Africa, with an unemployment rate of 32.6%. Thus, it is necessary to produce graduates with the much-needed entrepreneurial capabilities in the South African economy.

Framework for assessing innovation capacity and business efficiency in Romanian SMEs

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a new framework for assessing the innovation capacity and efficiency in Romanian small enterprises and start-ups. In this sense, a systematic literature review has been employed in order to obtain a clear understanding of the existing knowledge and to critically evaluate the existing solutions. In addition, considering the European Union objectives regarding innovation and sustainable development, this paper investigates the present situation of Romania by interpreting the official European Commission reports and current research papers. Considering the importance of regional innovation advancement and that of creating economic growth through competitiveness, this paper scrutinizes several concepts from the scientific literature, including regional innovation governance, entrepreneurship and innovation efficiency with the final purpose of developing a framework applicable for Romania. Taking into consideration the relatively low scores of Romanian regions regarding innovativeness and technological advancement, this paper attempts to provide a clearer understanding of the applicable factors that can be used for measuring innovation performance. The proposed framework focuses on the importance of entrepreneurship and the development of new business models in order to efficiently assess the innovative endeavors of enterprises. All things considered, this paper provides both theoretical and managerial contributions and possibility for further investigations addressed at specific Romanian regions and business sectors.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Student Entrepreneurial Interest in Private Catholic Universities in Samarinda City

Entrepreneurship education has received considerable critical attention in the last decade. The basic reason is that entrepreneurship can reduce social and economic problems such as unemployment and poverty. Given the importance of entrepreneurship, both developed and developing countries have responded by programming to increase entrepreneurship in their countries, including Indonesia. This qualitative study aims to determine the factors that influence students' interest in entrepreneurship. The population of this study was 114 students of the Catholic Religious Education study program who had taken entrepreneurship courses and had participated in entrepreneurship training and workshops on campus. The results of this study indicate that personality factors have a positive effect on students' interest in entrepreneurship with an rx1y value of 0.755; r2x1y is 0.570 with the regression equation is Y-0.595X1 + 11.304. Family factors also have a positive effect on interest in entrepreneurship with an rx2y value of 0.515; r 2 x2y is 0.265 with the regression equation is Y = 0.694X2 + 17.867. Then, the peer factor has a positive effect on students' interest in entrepreneurship, the value of rx3y is 0.453; r2x3y is 0.205 with the regression equation is Y = 0.537X3 + 21.916. Based on these results, the recommendation that can be given is that there is a need for improvement for the campus in providing understanding and entrepreneurship training in order to increase the interest and ability of students in entrepreneurship, so that graduating from college has enough confidence, quasi-knowledge, and abilities obtained for further practiced by entrepreneurship or creating jobs.
