Early Childhood Educators\u2019 Wellbeing During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The importance of Early Childhood (EC) educators’ wellbeing has been brought into sharp focus during the COVID-19 pandemic, as educators have navigated numerous additional stressors while providing education and care services for some children and ongoing support for many others learning at home. This study aimed to explore the impact of the pandemic on EC educators’ wellbeing and educator-child relationships, as growing evidence shows the influence of these factors on children’s developmental outcomes.In July 2020, members of a Research Network of EC Professionals—who previously identified educator wellbeing as a priority issue—were invited to participate in an online survey. The survey included two published, validated scales: the Early Childhood Professional Wellbeing scale (ECPW) and the Student–Teacher Relationship Scale (modified). Survey items about educators’ experiences during the pandemic were also included. Two hundred and thirty-two EC educators from across Australia completed the survey, mostly from Victoria where lockdowns were most severe. Linear regression analysis demonstrated stronger professional wellbeing was associated with less conflict in educator-child relationships and lower risk of staff turnover. This was more likely to be experienced by senior or more experienced staff. Although a negative impact of COVID-19 was reported, ECPW scores were relatively high, and organizational structures supporting professional wellbeing were most strongly associated with lower risk of turnover (r = 0.63, p < 0.001). Findings highlight that supporting EC educators’ wellbeing is essential for workforce retention, and for promoting quality educator-child relationships which are central to young children’s learning and development.

Understanding Parental Health Literacy for Clean and Healthy Behavior in Early Childhood During the Covid-19 Pandemic

In the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, parents need to be familiar with health literacy by applying clean and healthy living habits to their family members, especially those with early childhood. This study aims to explain parents' perceptions of health literacy for a clean and healthy behavior in their children during the COVID-19 pandemic. The method used in this study is a cross-sectional study involving 22 men and 62 female respondents. Respondent requirements were used in data analysis to determine parents' perceptions of health literacy and the efforts they have made to practice clean and healthy lifestyle in their children. The research findings show that knowing the health awareness of parents has an impact on a child's balanced lifestyle. Based on six measures of clean and healthy behavior for children, three indicators were determined in the category of discipline and high discipline: using clean water, using the toilet, and doing physical activity. The act of washing children's hands with soap indicators has a high discipline score and the use of masks in children has low discipline. If the use of masks is not disciplined by parents, exposure to COVID-19 in early childhood can be disrupted.&#x0D; Keywords: Early Childhood, Parental health literacy, Clean and healthy behaviors&#x0D;

Compulsive repetition and “The ancient mariner”: Coleridge's romantic “uncanny”

Summary In a discussion which focuses on the poem “The ancient mariner”, this essay attempts speculatively to reconstruct some of the ideas that might have appeared in Coleridge's celebrated unwritten essay on the supernatural, had he ever completed it. This task is managed with the somewhat unexpected help of Freud, on the grounds that Freud's theories of dream‐symbolism, and of neurotic symptoms as a “sign‐system”, are themselves the later beneficiaries of the theory of symbolism established by Coleridge and his romantic contemporaries. Freud's “uncanny” is compared with Coleridge's “supernatural”, both to point out likenesses and to supplement Coleridge with Freud where appropriate. In particular, the central importance of early childhood and its experiences for both men is explored, in such a way as, hopefully, to shed new light on romantic notions of the sublime. Evolving issues in early childhood education: A personal perspective

This article describes the issues in early childhood education that were most pressing during the past two decades. It indicates whether each issue has been settled and outlines urgent new issues for today. In 1967 the most salient issues were the importance of early childhood for education, when early education should begin, whether it could compensate for childhood experience at home, and whether the effects of early education were permanent. In 1972 the central issue was the best kind of early educational program. By 1977 attention had shifted to ways that early education could be done most efficiently and cheaply, whether parent education was the answer, and how it worked. By 1982 a new issue had arisen: the effects of full-time day care on preschool children's development. Today's most pressing issues seem to be finding ways to maximize the fit between programs and participants, the implications of the superbaby trend, and the effects of day care on infants' development.

Psychopathy: the Incapacity to have Moral Emotions

Abstract ‘Lovelessness’ and ‘guiltlessness’ are often seen as the distinctive features of the psychopath. These characteristics can be interpreted as a failure to have two sub‐classes of moral emotions, the (moral) rule‐emotions and the altruistic emotions. For a better understanding of this moral defect, a more detailed analysis of these types of moral emotions is given. The analysis indicates that the disorder is caused by the absence of the second component of both types of emotions. The psychopath misses a positive commitment to both moral rules and to the well‐being of fellow man. The psychopath is characterized as a moral imbecile, and it is assumed that his moral development is stagnated in an early developmental stage. As a young child, the psychopath has not acquired the disposition to feel sympathy. This insight makes us aware of the utmost importance of early childhood (moral) education.

Comparative social adjustments of elementary school pupils with and without preschool training.

Educators, psychologists, and sociologists have generally agreed upon the importance of early childhood in the formation of personality and character. No doubt this emphasis is well placed. However, there is still much to be found out about the conditions or kinds of experiences which make for significant differences in subsequent development. It is the major purpose of this paper to present a report of some efforts to evaluate the extent to which nursery school and kindergarten experiences can be shown to make a difference in classroom social adjustments in subsequent elementary school grades. The primary question to be answered is: Can those children, as a group, who have had these preschool socializing experiences be shown to have measurable advantages in subsequent years in classroom social adjustments as compared with children in the same classes who have had no nursery school or kindergarten training? This report consists of a review of three studies bearing on this question, together with a discussion of the findings.
