Restorative Justice for Domestic Violence: The Meaning of Community in Circles

ABSTRACT Although community involvement is a central ideal in restorative justice (RJ), its implementation in practice has scarcely been researched. This study used interpretive phenomenological analysis of interviews and focus groups to explore 16 circle participants’ and stakeholders’ perceptions of community in a domestic violence RJ program called circles of Peace. Three themes emerged: Importance of community involvement, Offenders’ prospects of change when the community is involved, and circles as a community within a community. The discussion highlights the beneficial role of community in the restorative process, as well as limitations and practical implications of the study.

Coastal clean-up in Southeast Asia: lessons learned, challenges, and future strategies

The significant accumulation of marine debris on beaches poses a challenge and raises serious concerns to the global environmental sustainability. It has been previously reported that Southeast Asian (SEA) is one of the global hotspots of marine debris contributor to almost 30% of marine debris pollution to the world oceans. This review discusses the challenge and provide the information of mitigation efforts associated with beach clean-up initiatives to combat the marine debris in Southeast Asia. We employ the comprehensive of qualitative data analysis from relevant literature reviews and conducting a structured study specific to the region, therefore, this research highlights the prevalence and characteristics of marine debris that addressed Coastal Cleanup Activities (CCA) in Southeast Asian. Plastic debris remains type of marine debris commonly found across the beaches. Furthermore, Coastal Clean Up (CCU) activities involving local communities have progressively gained prominence in addressing marine debris issues by utilizing educational outreach to raise awareness effectively. Participants in these initiatives include students, tourists, and high school students. The crucial gap of Coastal CCA required the consistent application of scientific methods during beach clean-ups in Southeast Asian. The importance of community involvement, the adoption of scientific methodology, regular clean-up initiatives, and the potential of marine citizen science formulation could potentially contribute in facilitating an effective approach of marine debris management and education in Southeast Asia. Given the substantial component of initiatives, the result of this study proposes the focus on marine citizen science emerges in the future as a potential avenue for educating and engaging the public awareness towards understanding and tackling marine debris accumulation in Southeast Asian beaches.

MENUJU LINGKUNGAN BERKELANJUTAN: PENINGKATAN PEMAHAMAN MASYARAKAT TENTANG PENTINGNYA AMDAL DALAM PEMBANGUNAN JALAN DI NEGERI HILA, MALUKU TENGAH

Road infrastructure development is an important step in increasing connectivity and economic growth in an area. However, often road construction can have a negative impact on the environment if it is not managed properly. Preparing an Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) is one approach that can minimize these negative impacts and maintain a balance between development and the environment. This community service aims to increase people's understanding in Hila Country, Central Maluku, about the importance of AMDAL in road construction. Through various participatory and educational activities, the service team aims to provide information about the AMDAL process, its benefits in road construction, and the importance of community involvement in environmental impact assessments. The methods used in this service involve interactive workshops, group discussions, and distribution of educational material about AMDAL. Apart from that, the service team also collaborates with related agencies to provide training to local government staff on the AMDAL process in order to improve understanding and effective implementation of AMDAL. It is hoped that the results of this service will create awareness among the community about the importance of AMDAL in road construction and their active role in making decisions regarding environmental impacts. Apart from that, it is also hoped that it can encourage broader and more comprehensive implementation of AMDAL in development projects in this area in order to achieve a sustainable environment and high carrying capacity.

The Importance of Community Involvement in Public Management Planning and Decision-Making Processes

Public management is an effort to deliver public services, programmes, and projects that are efficient, effective, and equitable for the community. The planning and decision-making processes of public management are two key aspects in achieving this goal. Traditionally, the planning and decision-making processes of public management are mostly carried out by government officials and internal stakeholders without involving active participation from the community. However, in this increasingly complex and diverse era, community involvement is important and cannot be ignored. This research aims to explore the role of the community in public decision-making and its impact on efficiency, effectiveness and fairness in public service delivery. This research is a literature review that adopts a qualitative method approach, which means it will analyse and interpret data by relying on information and text from various sources. The study results show that community involvement in the planning and decision-making process of public management is a key principle in democratic and participation-based governance. Community participation helps to create a government that is more transparent, accountable, inclusive, and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people.

Pelatihan Penguatan Partisipasi Masyarakat dalam Perencanaan Pembangunan di Desa Andomesinggo Kecamatan Besulutu Kabupaten Konawe

The purpose of this community service activity is to conduct training on strengthening community participation in village development planning. This community service activity was carried out in Andomesinggo Village, Besulutu District, Konawe Regency. This community service activity was carried out in two stages; the first stage was to provide knowledge about the importance of community involvement in development planning to encourage successful development. This stage was carried out using the method of lectures and discussions with the training participants. Furthermore, a direct field review was conducted with the trainees to understand the problems faced in development planning. This service activity has received approval to be integrated with the Village Development Program in Andomesinggo Village, Besulutu District, Konawe Regency.

Religious Heritage: Reconciliation between Spirituality and Cultural Concerns

Religious heritage has a dual cultural and religious meaning and importance in society. It has a cultural value because it symbolises the history and art of a community, and a religious value because it represents a spiritual hub and home for a community of believers. This article analyses the challenges posed by this association between religious heritage —as both an economic and tourism resource— and cultural heritage. Methodologically, an observation, reflection and analysis of the challenges that are faced are proposed. The results reveal various initiatives for development, protection and enhancement. The discussion revolves around the importance of community involvement and the benefits this brings to various sectors, including economic activity, from the perspective of religious tourism as an aspect of tourism per se, in which a faith and its believers are elements that merit heritage conservation.

Preventing Fuel Station Accidents: The Importance of Community Involvement

From 2016-2018 there were 120 fuel station accidents in Indonesia. Fuel station accidents may harm not only workers but also the public. Major accidents in fuel stations have caused multiple fatalities and injuries. Various research regarding fuel stations has been done, but research on the role of the community in preventing fuel station accidents is limited. Therefore, studying the cause and effect of fuel station accidents is essential. The study aims to collect accident information and determine the impact, cause, and possible prevention programs for fuel station accidents. Study methods use data collection and classification, followed by qualitative analysis. Data were collected from the top 10 national news portals and tabulated in a structured manner. Twenty-nine fuel station accidents were identified and evaluated. These data were then categorized and analyzed to obtain the dominant effects of accidents. Accident causes were also investigated to provide an understanding and propose accident prevention programs adopted from previous research in various fields. It is concluded that fuel station accidents in Indonesia are dominated by vehicle fires, which involve consumer vehicles. The causes of accidents vary, but most of them were concerning the technical condition of vehicles, and a few were unsafe operations. To prevent future accidents, it is essential to ensure compliance with regulations and standards of facilities and equipment. Furthermore, community involvement is also crucial. Therefore, more efforts are needed to increase public awareness of fuel station hazards and how the community can be involved in preventing future accidents.

COVID-19 as a social disease: qualitative analysis of COVID-19 prevention needs, impact of control measures and community responses among racialized/ethnic minorities in Antwerp, Belgium

BackgroundIn high income countries, racialized/ethnic minorities are disproportionally affected by COVID-19. Despite the established importance of community involvement in epidemic preparedness, we lack in-depth understanding of these communities’ experiences with and responses to COVID-19. We explored information and prevention needs, coping mechanisms with COVID-19 control measures and their impact on lived experiences among selected racialized/ethnic minority communities.MethodsThis qualitative rapid assessment conducted in Antwerp/Belgium used an interpretative and participatory approach. We included migrant communities with geographic origins ranging from Sub-Saharan Africa, North-Africa to the Middle East, Orthodox Jewish communities and professional community workers. Data were collected between May 2020–May 2021 through key informant-, in-depth interviews and group discussions (N = 71). Transcripts were analyzed inductively, adopting a reflexive thematic approach. A community advisory board provided feedback throughout the research process.ResultsParticipants indicated the need for tailored information in terms of language and timing. At the start of the epidemic, they perceived official public health messages as insufficient to reach all community members. Information sources included non-mainstream (social) media and media from home countries, hampering a nuanced understanding of virus transmission mechanisms and local and national protection measures. Participants felt the measures’ most negative impact on their livelihoods (e.g. loss of income, disruption of social and immigration support). Economic insecurity triggered chronic stress and fears at individual and family level. High degrees of distrust in authorities and anticipated stigma were grounded in previously experienced racial and ethnic discrimination. Community-based initiatives mitigated this impact, ranging from disseminating translated and tailored information, providing individual support, and successfully reaching community members with complex needs (e.g. the elderly, digitally illiterate people, those with small social networks or irregular legal status).ConclusionStudy participants’ narratives showed how coping with and responding to COVID-19 was strongly intertwined with socio-economic and ethnic/racial characteristics. This justifies conceptualizing COVID-19 a social disease. At the same time, communities demonstrated resilience in responding to these structural vulnerabilities. From a health equity perspective, we provide concrete policy recommendations grounded in insights into communities’ structural vulnerabilities and resilience.

Cannabis Industry Marketing Violations in Washington State, 2014–2019

The purpose of this study was to describe marketing violations from the cannabis industry in Washington State. The study team obtained records of all Washington State cannabis marketing violations from October 2014 to September 2015, immediately following the legal cannabis market opening, and May 2017 to July 2019. A code book was developed based on the Washington State regulations related to marijuana advertising. Each marketing violation was coded according to ad characteristics including ad size, location, or type; content; business practices; and lack of mandatory health warnings. A total of 328 violations were analyzed, from 183 different businesses. Marketing violations occurred most frequently in content posted online or directly in front of cannabis stores. Community members were as likely to identify violations as officers from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB), the state agency in charge of regulation and enforcement of cannabis businesses. Very few violations were reported from competing members of the cannabis industry. Violations reported by the community were mostly related to content appealing to minors, whereas WSLCB officers were more likely to identify violations related to ad location in public spaces and ad size. This study shows the conflict between prevention and profit in the nascent cannabis industry and the importance of community involvement in the regulation of cannabis marketing.

Is Experience the Best Teacher? Knowledge, Perceptions, and Awareness of Wildfire Risk

Wildfires represent a natural phenomenon with detrimental effects on natural resources and human health. A better knowledge, perception, and awareness of wildfire risk may help communities at risk of exposure to prevent future events and safeguard their own lives. The aim of this study is to explore differences between individuals with and without previous wildfire experience, in terms of (1) subjective and advanced wildfire knowledge, (2) self-reported perceptions, (3) level of information, (4) self-protection measures, and (5) importance of community involvement. As a second step, we investigated differences in the same variables, focusing more deeply on a group of individuals with previous wildfire experience, classifying them according to fire-related employment (fire-related workers vs. non-workers) and wildland–urban interface (WUI) proximity (WUI residents vs. non-WUI residents). The Kruskal–Wallis test was applied to establish differences between the pairs of subsamples. Our results partially confirmed our hypothesis, that direct experience leads individuals to have a greater preparedness on the topic of wildfires. Perception of knowledge is reflected only at a shallow level of expertise, and, therefore, no relevant within-group differences related to fire-related employment or to WUI proximity were detected. Moreover, available information was perceived to be insufficient, thus we report a strong need for developing effective communication to high-risk groups, such as homeowners and fire-related workers.

The Implementation of Langkat Regent Regulation Number 19 of 2019 Concerning Procedures for Procurement of Goods and Services in Village (Study in the Village of Stabat Baru)

The implementation of policies in the Presidential Decree PBJ has not been able to fully address the lack of community infrastructure, especially needs that are relatively simple at the village level, such as drinking water facilities, educational facilities, garbage collection, internet facilities and so on . The formulation of the research problem is how to implement and the obstacles in implementing Langkat Regent Regulation Number 19 of 2019 concerning Procedures for Procurement of Goods and Services in Village in Stabat Baru Village. The results show that the implementation in terms of communication and organizational structure has been going well, but in terms of resources and disposition it has not gone well, with the constraint factors faced in the form of difficulty coordinating with the community, lack of employee cooperation, lack of employee responsibility for work because it is more concerned with personal affairs. It is recommended that the Village Stabat Baru needs to conduct more intensive socialization regarding the importance of community involvement in PBJ. Leaders need to emphasize to employees that cooperation will be increasing important in dealing with many jobs. Leaders need to be firm in disciplining subordinates who use the working day to take care of their personal interests.

Does the Community Contribute to Reducing Student Dropout? Current Practices, Challenges, and A Way Forward in RuRal Bangladesh

The constitution of Bangladesh aims to ensure quality education for all children. Attending school regularly and completing the cycle is a pre-condition of quality education. This qualitative research was conducted to obtain insights into current practice on community involvement for regular student attendance and reducing dropout in rural Government Primary Schools (GPS) in Bangladesh as well as challenges and possible initiatives. Data were analyzed thematically after conducting five semi-structured interviews with Upazila Education Officers, Assistant Upazila Education Officers, head teachers, and School Managing Committee chairmen; two focus group discussions with assistant teachers and community members of two rural GPS; and school observation. We find that various local and school committees and associations were not performing their assigned and defined roles. Physical home visits were effective but not performed on a regular basis. Mother gatherings were to some extent helpful with the possibility of broadening their scope, but uthan boithok (local gatherings in common spaces) were totally absent. Poverty and lack of awareness about formal education, the tendency of educated families to live in cities and town, negative perceptions of communities about government organizations, the unexpected attitudes of teachers towards rural guardians, and a lack of about the importance of community involvement were the main challenges hindering community contribution to regular student attendance and reducing dropout. To mitigate these challenges, we recommend robust educational leadership, where head teachers as leaders take the required initiatives by raising awareness through collaborations with the local community. This research contributes to ensuring quality education by discussing possible initiatives involving the community to promote regular student attendance and reducing dropout in rural GPS. Survey Development: Community Involvement in the Design and Implementation Process.

Documenting Tribal health priorities is needed to inform research agendas, policy efforts, advocacy, and funding. However, published literature rarely documents the methods used to develop surveys in Indigenous communities. This methods paper includes two objectives: (1) increase knowledge and understanding about the importance of community involvement in public health activities; and (2) provide an example of how the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council Epidemiology Center (RMTEC) worked with one Tribal community to develop a health priorities survey. This paper describes how the RMTEC worked with a Tribal community and Tribal College students to develop, pilot, and revise a health priorities survey. Recommendations focus on the need for more culturally-responsive survey methods, the importance of building Tribal capacity for health research, and the value of piloting surveys in communities prior to implementation.

Extraordinary Educative Environmental Events

Using educative environmental protection events such as “Environmental Protection Pioneer Campaign”, “Rewarding Recycling Campaign”, “Green Efforts Give Great Rewards Event”, “Environmental Protection Workshop”, “Environmental Campaign Day”, “Environmental Protection Carnival” and “Second-hand Bazaar” held in Park Island, Hong Kong, as a case study, the purpose is exploring how educative environmental protection events contribute to demonstrate environmentally friendly property management and raise the environmental protection awareness and encourage residents’ involvement to live green. 
 
 Design/Methodology/Approach—This paper identifies environmental protection events as an effective strategy to raise environmental awareness for all of the estate residents. The objectives of environmental protection events aimat showing the importance of community involvement, demonstrating educative environmentally friendly property management and encourage residents to live green. Authors conducted twenty-five in-depth semi-structured interviews with participants so as to fully understand the contributions made by the events.
 
 Findings—Educative environmental protection events were perceived by all of the study participants as effective and educative events, which raised environmental awareness, upheld moral obligation to engage in environmental protection, and induced greater pro-environmental behavior to sustainability. Based on the results, the framework of 10 Cs is revealed which contributes to environmentally friendly environment for the next generation. These contributions are: 
 
 1) Circulating surplus materials to the needy
 
 2) Choosing public transportation 
 
 3) Committing to green education
 
 4) Cultivating pro-environmental behavior
 
 5) Caring for sustainable development
 
 6) Cutting Carbon lifestyle
 
 7) Coordinating efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle
 
 8) Consuming less electricity
 
 9) Concerning ocean creatures protection
 
 10) Ceasing ozone depleting chemicals products
 
 Practical implications—Based on the insights gained from participants, the 10 Cs contributions are made by educative environmental protection events for nurturing moral obligation to demonstrate environmentally friendly property management and raise the environmental protection awareness and encourage residents’ involvement to live green. Participants should take part in all environmental-protection measures daily. The Estate Management Company and government should deepen cooperation in environmental protection, intensify ecological preservation and build a green living environment. 
 
 Originality/value—This paper urges for the importance of all residents, all estate management companies and government to engage in environmental protection for sustainable development. The aim of such an episode is to arouse all stakeholders to participate in environmental protection actively and attentively for green environment.

Exploration of University Faculty Perceptions and Experiences of Service-Learning as Engaged Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this qualitative instrumental case study was to explore how faculty at a private research university utilize the service-learning pedagogy to advance their scholarship of teaching and learning. Of specific interest was what influences them to utilize the service-learning pedagogy in their scholarship of teaching and learning, and how they perceive that utilizing the service-learning pedagogy affects student learning. Boyer’s work on the scholarship of teaching and learning framed the study. The findings of this study are that the experiential components of the service-learning pedagogy are effective in connecting students to real-world problems. As part of the curriculum it engages students in deeper learning and its use changes students’ perspectives about the importance of community involvement, establishing a community consciousness to those students involved. The study supports that the service-learning pedagogy is important to higher education faculty and has led to supporting their scholarship of teaching and learning.

An Elegant Journey: Jewish Teens Encounter Dignity Beyond Death

“The Final Journey: How Judaism Dignifies the Passage” is a trailblazing curriculum developed to teach Jewish death rituals to high school seniors. For the students, it served as a transformative experience. They emerged more reflective, more spiritual, and with a greater sense of the importance of community involvement. The article describes in detail the ten-hour course that features a field trip to a funeral home.
