A life cycle framework for the investigation of environmentally benign nanoparticles and products

AbstractWhile significant advances in our understanding of the behavior of engineered nanoparticles in the environment continue, there remains a need to engage the nanoparticle research community directly in the development and evaluation of environmentally benign nanoparticles to ensure that nanomaterial‐based industries emerge as tools for sustainability rather than environmental liabilities. Current research efforts aimed at understanding the environmental implications of nanotechnology emphasize existing groups of nanoparticles and products already in commercial distribution. While this is clearly necessary, this approach fails to identify and address the many tradeoffs associated with product performance and environmental quality. We believe this to be a critical gap in the ongoing exploration of nanostructured materials and their properties and applications. We posit that a number of issues are not being holistically addressed, including resource availability and allocation, manufacturing energy requirements and embodied energy, material efficiency, environmental properties of nanomaterials and nanoproducts, and waste generation. An interdisciplinary approach to research, based on the life cycle paradigm and devoted to the identification, investigation, synthesis, testing, and analysis of groups of new, more environmentally conscious nanoparticles is needed. Nanotechnology between the lab and the shop floor: what are the effects on labor?

Nanotechnology’s effects on labor and employment have received little attention within research and debates on the social implications of nanotechnology. This article shows that, in spite of its incipient development, nanotechnology is unquestionably moving toward manufacturing, involving a still very small but increasing component of the labor force. Based on secondary data and the literature review, I compose a picture of the emerging jobs in nanotechnology and highlight four emerging trends in nanotechnology workers’ skills requirements. I show that, in addition to job creation, nanotechnology diffusion is likely to pose labor market changes that may be disruptive for some categories of workers.

Encyclopedia of nanoscience and society

Nanoscience is an exploding field that has been described as the Next Big Thing, equivalent to a New Industrial Revolution. The fields touched by its applications include information technology, biotechnology and health care, energy production and utilization, security and national defense, food and agriculture, aerospace, manufacturing, and environmental improvement. 2004 saw publication of two huge multi-volume works (Schwarz and Nalwa), but as a January 2005 Choice review noted, the field is changing so rapidly you almost could consider any encyclopedia on the topic obsolete on arrival. While that may be somewhat true of specific details of a fast-moving technology, more enduring will be the social issues raised by emerging technologies like these. That same Choice review noted neither of the new encyclopedias attempted to deal with such issues, focusing instead on engineering aspects, oso economic and social implications of nanoresearch await treatment.oe We propose to provide that treatment in an encyclopedia covering the ethical, legal, policy, social, economic, and business issues raised by the science and the technology. Because of their far-reaching consequences, truly transformative technologies always generate controversy. Thus, while nanotechnologies hold promise to dramatically improve quality of life, the popular press often focuses on negative specters of a Frankenstein or a PandoraAEs box. Somewhere between the hype of those promising abundance for all and the gloom of those forecasting global doom are social scientists and ethicists attempting to identify and understand the broad implications of nanotechnology, to gauge its promise and acceptance, to assess impacts for decisions by regulatory agencies, and to facilitate the development of judicious policy approaches to new technology options.

Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology—An Update

Some engineers and scientists are either directly or indirectly involved with nanotechnology issues. Nanotechnology concerns dealing with environmental implications and regulatory compliance encompass practicing areas for these technical individuals. Areas of particular concern include current/proposed environmental regulations and procedures for quantifying both health risks and hazard risks. This article addresses both of these issues.

Nanotechnology as general-purpose technology: empirical evidence and implications

Developments in nanotechnology are poised to have a pervasive effect on various industries for years to come and nanotechnology management research is beginning to appear in peer-reviewed management journals. Much of the research on this early, emergent technology is focused on issues of definition and identification of technology type. In this study, we searched the US Patents and Trademarks Office database and used an expert validation methodology to develop a sample of the first 25 years (1980–2004) of nanotechnology patenting activity. We analysed this data for early evidence that nanotechnology is a general-purpose technology (GPT) – a transformative technology characterised by its pervasiveness, improvement over time, and pattern of diffusion. Our findings indicate that nanotechnology patenting activity has been growing in intensity and relative to overall patenting activity, and that it is pervasive across industry and technology sectors. Implications of nanotechnology as a GPT are discussed.

How can nanobiotechnology oversight advance science and industry: examples from environmental, health, and safety studies of nanoparticles (nano-EHS)

Nanotechnology has great potential to transform science and industry in the fields of energy, material, environment, and medicine. At the same time, more concerns are being raised about the occupational health and safety of nanomaterials in the workplace and the implications of nanotechnology on the environment and living systems. Studies on environmental, health, and safety (EHS) issues of nanomaterials have a strong influence on public acceptance of nanotechnology and, eventually, affect its sustainability. Oversight and regulation by government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play significant roles in ensuring responsible and environmentally friendly development of nanotechnology. The EHS studies of nanomaterials can provide data and information to help the development of regulations and guidelines. We present research results on three aspects of EHS studies: physico-chemical characterization and measurement of nanomaterials; emission, exposure, and toxicity of nanomaterials; and control and abatement of nanomaterial releases using filtration technology. Measurement of nanoparticle agglomerates using a newly developed instrument, the Universal NanoParticle Analyzer (UNPA), is discussed. Exposure measurement results for silicon nanoparticles in a pilot scale production plant are presented, as well as exposure measurement and toxicity study of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Filtration studies of nanoparticle agglomerates are also presented as an example of emission control methods.

Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment and reuse: emerging opportunities and challenges for developing countries

The availability of clean water is necessary for all aspects of food production, preparation, distribution and consumption. Yet the magnitude, intensity and diversity of water pollution and the depletion of some water resources continue to grow, reducing the availability of clean, usable water and raising the potential for a water-related crisis that would have a severe impact on food processes. These impacts could be especially severe in developing nations where water supplies and treatment technologies are limited. Nanotechnology shows great promise as a feasible means of treating both long-standing and emerging water contaminants, as well as enabling technologies such as desalination of seawater to increase water supply. However, some engineered nanomaterials could also become water pollutants that threaten public and ecosystem health. Accordingly, this paper considers both the applications and implications of nanotechnology within the context of water quality and water security for developing countries.

Nanomaterials in the Environment: From Materials to High-Throughput Screening to Organisms

One of the challenges in the field of nanotechnology is environmental health and safety (EHS), including consideration of the properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) that could pose dangers to the environment. Progress in the field of nanomaterial development and nanotoxicology was presented at the International Conference on the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology at the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) on the UCLA campus on May 11-14, 2010. This event was cohosted by the University of California Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (UC CEIN) and the Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology (CEINT) based at Duke University. Participants included scientists and scholars from various backgrounds, including chemistry, biology, engineering, nanomaterial science, toxicology, ecology, mathematics, sociology, and policy makers. The topics of discussion included safety evaluation of ENMs from an environmental perspective, nanotoxicology, ecotoxicology, safe design of ENMs, environmental risk assessment, public perception of nanotechnology, application of ENMs in consumer products, and many more. The UC CEIN presented data on their predictive toxicological approach to the assessment of ENM libraries, which were designed and synthesized to develop an understanding of the material properties that could lead to hazard generation at the cellular and organismal levels in the environment. This article will focus on the first metal oxide ENM library that was introduced to harmonize research activities in the UC CEIN, with particular emphasis on the safety assessment of ZnO on cells and organisms. Methods of decreasing the observed toxic effects will also be discussed as an integral component of the UC CEIN's activity in developing safer nanomaterials to lessen their environmental impacts.

Science policy considerations for responsible nanotechnology decisions

There is a growing literature on the use of science to inform decisions on the environmental, health and safety implications of nanotechnology, but little has been published by those who make such decisions. Here, as officials of the US Environmental Protection Agency, the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, we discuss the types of decision facing government regulators, the new considerations nanotechnology brings to decision-making, the role of science in informing decisions, how regulators cooperate internationally on policy issues, and the challenges that lie ahead.

NANOMATERIALS: Transformation of Silver Nanoparticles in Sewage Sludge

The release and environmental fate of nanoparticles throughout the life cycle of “nanoenabled” goods is an area of growing research interest. In the first known field study of the fate of silver nanoparticles in the wastewater treatment system, researchers now report these nanoparticles transform into silver sulfide in the sludge produced by sewage treatment plants.1 This new information about the life cycle of silver nanoparticles provides a starting point for further exploring their impact on the environment. Silver has been used as an antimicrobial agent for millennia,2 and the increased surface area offered by the nanoparticle form of the metal offers greater germ-killing capacity.3 Today, manufacturers add silver nanoparticles to hundreds of consumer products, including food storage containers, clothing, computer keyboards, cosmetics, pillows, cell phones, and medical appliances.4 Silver is water soluble, so contact with any type of moisture—such as a bath or a spin in the washing machine—washes some out and sends it into wastewater systems. “We wanted to know what form of silver enters the environment after it goes down the drain and passes through sewage treatment plants,” says Michael Hochella, a geochemist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and director of natural and incidental nanoparticles for the multi-institute Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology.5 Sludge from sewage treatment facilities can end up as landfill or soil amendments in agricultural fertilizers, or it can be burned in incinerators. In 2006 and 2007 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analyzed sewage sludge samples from 74 municipal wastewater treatment facilities nationwide and tested for 28 metals, including silver (which was detected in all the samples).6 Through the EPA, Hochella and postdoctoral fellow Bojeong Kim obtained frozen samples of sludge from a Midwest facility. They suspected it would contain the nanosilver particles now used in consumer products—although the EPA’s goal in sampling was simply to obtain national estimates of the concentrations of selected analytes, not identify nanoparticles. Kim developed analytical methods to determine the size, chemistry, and atomic structure of silver nanoparticles in the samples. The samples tested high in silver, but the silver could not be attributed to an industrial source. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the nanoparticles were 5–20 nm in diameter and formed small, loosely packed aggregates no more than 100 nm in size. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry showed that sulfur (which is produced by microorganisms that digest sewage) combined with the silver in a 2:1 ratio, and the crystal structure confirmed the formation of silver sulfide nanoparticles.1 The results underscore the complexity of environmental fate. “What we start with is not what ends up in the environment,” Hochella says. The researchers don’t know how many silver nanoparticles were introduced to the wastewater treatment plants or how much incoming nanosilver ended up as silver sulfide nanoparticles. However, Kim notes that no pure silver nanoparticles were found in the sludge. In general, silver sulfide is highly insoluble and settles out of water.7 But no one knows if silver sulfide nanoparticles behave in the same way. Properties of metals can change dramatically as particle size decreases.3 “It’s hard to predict whether the solubility of nanoparticles will increase, decrease, or stay the same,” Kim says. The bioavailability, toxicity, and reactivity of silver sulfide nanoparticles also are unknown. If silver sulfide nanoparticles do prove toxic, the environmental implications could be unfavorable. Antimicrobial nanoparticles could adversely impact desirable microorganisms that decompose waste in sewage treatment plants, says Murray McBride, director of the Cornell Waste Management Institute. Furthermore, McBride says, nanosized silver sulfide applied to agricultural land could oxidize in soils and release toxic silver ions that kill beneficial soil microorganisms. On the other hand, one study of laboratory-grown Pseudomonas putida biofilms indicated some bacteria bind silver ions, potentially rendering them less toxic.8

The security implications of nanotechnology

Although nanotechnology offers much hope, it also has dual-use potential that must be addressed. Past attempts to control chemical and biological weapons are instructive but inadequate.

Environmental Reform Organizations and Undone Science in the United States: Exploring the Environmental, Health, and Safety Implications of Nanotechnology

Environmental organizations have raised concerns about the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) implications of the hundreds of products containing nanomaterials that are now on the market. In the process they have drawn attention to the ‘undone science’ of EHS research and called for changes in both research and regulatory policy. Environmental and other advocacy organizations have been active in three policy fields in the United States: funding levels for EHS research, moratoria on the production of new nanomaterials largely based on the precautionary principle, and negotiations over definitions of safe or responsible nanotechnology with the private sector and the federal government. During the administration of President George W. Bush, calls for more research and industry guidelines met with greater success than those that called for moratoria and enhanced mandatory regulation. The more successful strategies tend to reproduce scientistic politics associated with risk assessment, whereas the less successful strategies would open up a broader public debate on the extent to which nanotechnology is needed or socially desirable.

Many particle magnetic dipole–dipole and hydrodynamic interactions in magnetizable stent assisted magnetic drug targeting

The implant assisted magnetic targeted drug delivery system of Avilés, Ebner and Ritter is considered both experimentally ( in vitro) and theoretically. The results of a 2D mathematical model are compared with 3D experimental results for a magnetizable wire stent. In this experiment a ferromagnetic, coiled wire stent is implanted to aid collection of particles which consist of single domain magnetic nanoparticles (radius ≈ 10 nm ). In order to model the agglomeration of particles known to occur in this system, the magnetic dipole–dipole and hydrodynamic interactions for multiple particles are included. Simulations based on this mathematical model were performed using open source C++ code. Different initial positions are considered and the system performance is assessed in terms of collection efficiency. The results of this model show closer agreement with the measured in vitro experimental results and with the literature. The implications in nanotechnology and nanomedicine are based on the prediction of the particle efficiency, in conjunction with the magnetizable stent, for targeted drug delivery.

A critical review of the implication of nanotechnology in modern dental practice.

Curiosity has its own reason for existing. For thousands of years, mankind has been harnessing its curiosity into inquiry and the process of scientific methodology. If we consider technology as an engine, then science is its fuel. Science of miniaturization (nanotechnology) is manipulating matter at nanometer level and the application of the same to medicine is called nanomedicine. Nanotechnology holds promise for advanced diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, and biosensors. When we gain access to hold the nanorobots, we will be able to treat very rapidly a number of diseases that are a continuous threat for mankind today. The present article aims to provide an early glimpse on the impact and future implication of nanotechnology in dentistry, especially in oral surgery and orthodontics.

Public reactions to the promotion of nanotechnologies in society

What would be the reactions of the public if nanotechnologies do not contribute to the economic growth and societal well-being? Similar questions have led philosophers, cultural and social scientists to explore the ethical and societal implications of nanotechnologies. They often call for more realistic expectations with regard to the promotion of nanotechnologies in society. If governments, firms and scientists have taken this argument into account, they still emphasise that nothing should hinder the nanotechnological innovation process. How would citizens react to such a promotional strategy of governments, firms, scientists? To address this question, we have conducted a comparative survey in March and December 2008 among people living in the cities of Grenoble (France), and Hamburg (Germany). Our results show that French and German interviewees react with scepticism towards the promotion of nanotechnologies in society. Significantly different motivations legitimise their scepticism, as well as their different image of nanotechnologies.

Assessment of social implications of nanotechnologies in Japan: Application of problem structuring method based on interview surveys and cognitive maps

This paper aims at developing a problem structuring method based on interview surveys of key stakeholders and a well-known visualizing technique, called a “cognitive map.” We found that this new method, based on an interactive process with key stakeholders, was able to draw broader and more detailed issues than was previously anticipated. We also found that the proposed method was useful for the analysis of the societal implications of emerging technologies, such as nanotechnologies, which are not easily defined. It is confirmed that the proposed method can clarify common and diversified issues based on the perception of key stakeholders and identify additional stakeholders to be interviewed.

Can Nanotechnology Be Just? On Nanotechnology and the Emerging Movement for Global Justice

Because of the overly market-oriented way in which technological development is carried out, there is a great amount of hubris in regard to how scientific and technological achievements are used in society. There is a tendency to exaggerate the potential commercial benefits and willfully neglect the social, cultural, and environmental consequences of most, if not all innovations, especially in new fields such as nanotechnology. At the same time, there are very few opportunities, or sites, for ensuring that nanotechnology is used justly and fairly, or for that matter, contribute to alleviating any of the wide variety of injustices that exist in the world. Most of the public authorities responsible for the development and application of science and technology are uninterested and unwilling to “assess” the implications of nanotechnology, and there are few, if any spaces in the broader culture for assessment to take place. Within the various “social movements” that are, in one way or another, concerned with issues of global justice, there is as yet little interest in nanotechnology. By examining the relations between nanotechnology and the emerging movement for global justice this article attempts to understand the enormous gap between the potential for science and technology to do good and the actual ways in science and technology get developed, and what, if anything, might be done to help close the gap in relation to nanotechnology, so that it might better be able to contribute to global justice.

A role for nanoparticle surface reactivity in facilitating pulmonary toxicity and development of a base set of hazard assays as a component of nanoparticle risk management

Results of some lung toxicology studies in rats indicate that pulmonary exposures to ultrafine or nanoparticles produce enhanced inflammatory responses compared to fine-sized particles. Apart from particle size and corresponding surface area considerations, several additional factors may influence the lung toxicity of nanoparticles. These include surface reactivity or surface treatments/coatings of particles, and aggregation potential of aerosolized particles. Conclusions from three pulmonary bioassay hazard/safety studies are summarized herein and demonstrate that particle surface characteristics such as chemical reactivity often correlate better with pulmonary toxicity than particle size or surface area considerations. In the first study, fine-sized quartz particle exposures in rats (500 nm) produced similar effects (inflammation, cytotoxicity, cell proliferation, and/or histopathology) compared to smaller 12-nm nanoscale quartz particles. In another study, no measurable differences in lung toxicity indices were quantified when comparing exposure effects in rats to (1) fine-sized TiO2 particles (300 nm, 6 m2/g [surface area]); (2) TiO2 nanodots (6–10 nm, 169 m2/g); or (3) TiO2 nanorods (27 m2/g). In a third study, exposures to ultrafine TiO2 particles of similar sizes and different surface areas produced differential degrees of toxicity—based in large part upon surface reactivity endpoints—rather than particle size or surface area indices.Finally, in a related issue for nanotechnology implications, a concept for developing a risk assessment system for the development of new nanomaterials is presented. Embodied in a Nanorisk framework process, implementation of a base set of toxicity tests for evaluating the health and environmental hazards related to nanoparticle exposures is discussed.
