Extracellular Matrix Protein Signatures of the Outer and Inner Zones of the Rat Adrenal Cortex.

This study analyzes the extracellular matrix (ECM) signatures of the outer (OF = capsule + subcapsular + zona glomerulosa cells) and inner fractions (IF = zona fasciculata cells) of the rat adrenal cortex, which comprise two distinct microenvironment niches. Proteomic profiles of decellularized OF and IF samples, male and female rats, identified 252 proteins, with 32 classified as ECM-component and ECM-related. Among these, 25 proteins were differentially regulated: 17 more abundant in OF, including Col1a1, Col1a2, Col6a1, Col6a2, Col6a3, Col12a1, Col14a1, Lama5, Lamb2, Lamc1, Eln, Emilin, Fbln5, Fbn1, Fbn2, Nid1, and Ltbp4, and eight more abundant in IF, including Col4a1, Col4a2, Lama2, Lama4, Lamb1, Fn1, Hspg2, and Ecm1. Eln, Tnc, and Nid2 were abundant in the female OF, while Lama2, Lama5, Lamb2, and Lamc1 were more abundant in the male IF. The complex protein signature of the OF suggests areas of tissue stress, stiffness, and regulatory proteins for growth factor signaling. The higher concentrations of Col4a1 and Col4a2 and their role in steroidogenesis should be further investigated in IF. These findings could significantly enhance our understanding of adrenal cortex functionality and its implications for human health and disease. The Biomolecular Basis of Gut Microbiome on Neurological Diseases

The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract harbors many microorganisms, including viruses, protozoa, archaea, fungi, and bacteria. Altogether, these microbes constitute what we know as the gut microbiome (GM). These commensal communities have important implications for human health. They influence physiological processes through different mechanisms, including synthesizing neurotransmitters, regulating enzymatic pathways, and releasing molecules responsible for different signal pathways. The interaction between GM and brain function has been associated with the development and pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric diseases. This review discusses current studies targeting the regulation and modulation of GM in nerve, neuroendocrine, and immune pathways. Thus, we analyze current evidence on transcription, changes in composition, and specific interactions between the gut and brain from a biomolecular perspective. Special attention is paid to mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effects and remediation of heavy metals contamination in soil and vegetables from different areas: A review

Heavy metals are non-biodegradable and thus persist in the environment, potentially infiltrating the food chain via crop plants and accumulating in the human body through biomagnification. Due to their toxic nature, heavy metal poisoning poses a severe threat to human health and the environment. Consuming vegetables contaminated with heavy metals can lead to increased accumulation of these metals in the human body. This review discusses the risks of heavy metal contamination in various areas, as reported in some research studies, and the implications for human health. Data obtained from several journals indicated that levels of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in vegetables were generally within permissible limits, though cadmium concentrations were found to be low in some studies. High concentrations of lead (Pb) can affect metabolic functions, growth, and photosynthetic activities. Cadmium (Cd) levels, which are lower than the permissible limit of 0.2 mg kg−1 set by WHO, can lead to chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges in cells. Zinc (Zn) levels were within permissible limits except in lettuce and spinach in some findings. Low zinc content in vegetables impacts human health, plant health, and agricultural productivity. Addressing zinc deficiency requires integrated approaches such as soil management, crop biofortification, and dietary diversification. Ensuring adequate zinc levels is essential for improving public health and achieving sustainable agricultural practices. Addressing heavy metal contamination in vegetables requires a combination of remediation and preventive strategies. Implementing soil and water management practices can mitigate these risks and ensure the safe production of vegetables.

Spatial distribution, bioaccessibility, and human health implications of potentially toxic elements in mining-impacted topsoils in Obuasi Municipality of Ghana.

Potential toxic elements emanating from extracted ores during gold processing present occupational and unintentional health hazards in communities, the general populace, and the environment. This study investigated the concentrations and potential health effects of metal content in the topsoils of Obuasi municipality, which has been mined for gold over the past century. Surface topsoil samples, sieved to 250µm, were initially scanned for metals using x-ray fluorescence techniques, followed by confirmation via ICP-MS. In vitro bioaccessibility assays were conducted using standard methods. The geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) indicate high enrichment of As (Igeo = 6.28) and Cd (Igeo = 3.80) in the soils, especially in the eastern part of the municipality where illegal artisanal mining is prevalent. Additionally, the southern corridor, situated near a gold mine, exhibited significant levels of As and Mn. Results obtained for the total metal concentrations and contamination indices confirmed the elevation of the studied potential toxic elements in the Obuasi community. A hazard index value of 4.42 and 3.30 among children and adults, respectively, indicates that indigens, especially children, are susceptible to non-cancer health effects.

Conversion of Retinoids along the Marine Food Chain Contributes to Adverse Impacts on the Spine, Liver, and Intestinal Health of the Marine Medaka (Oryzias melastigma).

Marine microalgae serve as an aquaculture bait. To enhance algal cell growth and breeding profits, high-intensity light conditions are standard for cultivating bait microalgae, potentially altering microalgal metabolite production. This research revealed that Thalassiosira pseudonana, when subjected to high-intensity light conditions, accumulated significant quantities of retinal (RAL) that transferred through the food chain and transformed into all-trans retinoic acid (atRA) in marine medaka. The study further explored the toxic effects on individual fish and specific tissues, as well as the mechanisms behind this toxicity. The accumulation of atRA in the liver, intestine, and spinal column resulted in structural damage and tissue inflammation, as well as oxidative stress. It also down-regulated the gene transcription levels of key pathways involved in immune function and growth. Furthermore, it disrupted the homeostasis of the intestinal microbial communities. The implications for wildlife and human health, which are influenced by the regulation of microalgal metabolite accumulation and their transfer via the food chain, require further investigation and could hold broader significance.

Distribution of microplastics in (sub)urban soils of Serbia and Cd, As, and Pb uptake by Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik.

Omnipresent in terrestrial ecosystems, microplastics (MPs) represent a hazard to soil biota and human health, while their relationship with other environmental contaminants remains poorly acknowledged. This study investigated MPs prevalence in (sub)urban soils of Serbia and its impact on Cd, As, and Pb mobility in the soil-medicinal plant Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik system. Soil physicochemical parameters (pH, Eh, SOM, and texture) were analyzed alongside the Cd, As, and Pb pseudo-total (aqua regia) and phytoavailable (EDTA) contents. Toxic elements' concentrations in soil fractions and C. bursa-pastoris roots and shoots were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Pseudo-total Cd, As, and Pb contents in soils ranged from 0.16 to 2.23 μg g-1, 2.00 to 36.92 μg g-1, and 0.18 to 65.54 μg g-1, respectively. Using an optimized density separation method with 30% H2O2 and 5% NaClO, we found an average abundance of 489 MPs per kg of soil. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of seven polymer types, whereby the main contributors were polystyrene (PS) – 28.57% and cardanol prepolymer (PCP) – 23.81%. The dominant associated pollution sources were road networks and industrial activities. Spearman correlation analysis revealed the interconnection among soil MPs, physicochemical variables, and Cd, As, and Pb mobility. We identified significant positive correlations between MPs' abundance and phytoavailable concentrations of Cd, As, and Pb (ρ = 0.82, 0.95, and 0.63). Moreover, soil MPs strongly positively correlated with Cd contents in roots (ρ = 0.61) and shoots of C. bursa-pastoris (ρ = 0.65). These findings underscore the synergistic effects of MPs and toxic metals in urban environmental pollution, with possible implications for human health. Further research is required to deepen our understanding of the impact of MPs on element mobility in complex plant-soil systems and to elucidate the broader consequences of induced alterations.

Unraveling the Intricacies of Cold-Inducible RNA-Binding Protein: A Comprehensive Review.

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is a versatile RNA-binding protein, pivotal in modulating cellular responses to diverse stress stimuli including cold shock, ultraviolet radiation, hypoxia, and infections, with a principal emphasis on cold stress. The temperature range of 32-34°C is most suitable for CIRP expression. The human CIRP is an 18-21kDa polypeptide containing 172 amino acids coded by gene located on chromosome 19p13.3. CIRP has an RNA-recognition motif (RRM) and an arginine-rich motif (RGG), both of which have roles in coordinating numerous cellular activities. CIRP itself also undergoes conformational changes in response to diverse environmental stress. Transcription factors such as hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) have been implicated in coordinating CIRP transcription in response to specific stimuli. The potential of CIRP to relocate from the nucleus to the cytoplasm upon exposure to different stimuli enhances its varied functional roles across different cellular compartments. The different functions include decreasing nutritional demand, apoptosis suppression, modulation of translation, and preservation of cytoskeletal integrity at lower temperatures. This review explores the diverse functions and regulatory mechanisms of CIRP, shedding light on its involvement in various cellular processes and its implications in human health and disease.

Seasonal dynamics, tidal influences, and anthropogenic impacts on microplastic distribution in the Yangtze River estuary: A comprehensive characterization and comparative analysis

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants with significant ecological and human health implications. This study examines the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of MPs in the Yangtze River estuary, focusing on seasonal variations, tidal cycles, and anthropogenic influences. Surface samples were collected using the Manta trawl method to ensure consistency with previous marine MP research. The study found an average MP concentration of 1.01 (± 0.65) n m−3, predominantly comprising low-density polymers such as polystyrene (38 %), polypropylene (33 %), and polyethylene (29 %). MPs were mainly fragments (34.9 %) and foam (30.7 %), with a prevalence of white particles. Seasonal analysis indicated significantly higher MP concentrations during flood seasons (1.32 ± 1.09 n m−3), nearly 1.9 times higher than during non-flood seasons (0.70 ± 0.28 n m−3). Tidal cycles also impacted MP distribution, with ebb tides showing increased concentrations (2.44 ± 1.30 n m−3) compared to flood tides (1.48 ± 2.07 n m−3). Furthermore, MP abundance showed a decreasing trend with increasing distance from urban centers, with significant correlations (0.52 < R2 < 0.65, P < 0.001). These findings underscore the necessity for seasonally adjusted monitoring and robust management strategies to combat MP pollution. The study advocates for the integration of diverse sampling methods and the consideration of environmental factors in future MP assessments, laying the groundwork for understanding the MP transport mechanism in the Yangtze River estuary and similar estuarine systems worldwide.

Spatial distribution of physicochemical parameters and drinking and irrigation water quality indices in the Jhelum River, Pakistan.

Sustainable management of river systems is a serious concern, requiring vigilant monitoring of water contamination levels that could potentially threaten the ecological community. This study focused on the evaluation of water quality in the Jhelum River (JR), Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and northern Punjab, Pakistan. To achieve this, 60 water samples were collected from various points within the JR Basin (JRB) and subjected to a comprehensive analysis of their physicochemical parameters. The study findings indicated that the concentrations of physicochemical parameters in the JRB water remained within safety thresholds for both drinking and irrigation water, as established by the World Health Organization and Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency. These physicochemical parameters refer to various chemical and physical characteristics of the water that can have implications for both human health (drinking water) and agricultural practices (irrigation water). The spatial variations throughout the river course distinguished between the upstream, midstream, and downstream sections. Specifically, the downstream section exhibited significantly higher values for physicochemical parameters and a broader range, highlighting a substantial decline in its quality. Significant disparities in mean values and ranges were evident, particularly in the case of nitrates and total dissolved solids, when the downstream section was compared with its upstream and midstream counterparts. These variations indicated a deteriorating downstream water quality profile, which is likely attributable to a combination of geological and anthropogenic influences. Despite the observed deterioration in the downstream water quality, this study underscores that the JRB within the upper Indus Basin remains safe and suitable for domestic and agricultural purposes. The JRB was evaluated for various irrigation water quality indices. The principal component analysis conducted in this study revealed distinct covariance patterns among water quality variables, with the first five components explaining approximately 79% of the total variance. Recommending the continued utilization of the JRB for irrigation, we advocate for the preservation and enhancement of water quality in the downstream regions.

Unraveling the anti-androgenic mechanism of tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanurate (TBC) via the non-classical testosterone pathway and steroidogenesis: potential human reproductive health implications

The decline in male reproductive health, characterized by diminishing sperm count and testosterone levels, has raised concerns about environmental influences, particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate (TBC), a novel brominated flame retardant widely used in electronics, textiles, and furniture, has emerged as a significant environmental contaminant with potential reproductive health implications. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying TBC-induced reproductive toxicity, particularly focusing on its impact on steroidogenesis and androgen signaling pathways using the GC-1 spg cell line as an in vitro model.Exposure of GC-1 spg cells to TBC, alone or in combination with testosterone or the anti-androgen flutamide resulted in decreased metabolic activity and increased lactate dehydrogenase release, indicating cytotoxic effects. Furthermore, TBC exposure led to a reduction in progesterone synthesis, while testosterone production remained unaffected. Interestingly, estradiol synthesis was diminished after TBC exposure, suggesting a disruption in steroid hormone balance critical for spermatogenesis. Mechanistic investigations revealed alterations in key proteins involved in the non-classical testosterone pathway and steroidogenesis. TBC exposure downregulated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), protein kinase B (AKT), and phosphorylated cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (p-CREB), indicating suppression of non-classical androgen signaling. Additionally, decreased levels of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD3β1) suggest impaired steroidogenesis. Here we uncover the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying TBC-induced reproductive toxicity, highlighting its potential to disrupt steroid hormone synthesis and androgen signaling pathways. Understanding the adverse effects of TBC on male reproductive health is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate its environmental impact and safeguard human fertility.

Evaluation of Ambient Air Quality Level at Various Locations within Lead City University, Ibadan

BACKGROUND: Air quality in university environment is strongly affected by the student population explosion, climatic conditions and industrial activity within the institution. Monitoring the main air pollutants such as carbon dioxides, carbon monoxide and particulate matter may help control the most polluted areas of the institution and take measures to reduce the pollution.Universities are big metropolitan institutions with sizable populations of students, employees, and visitors. However, university settings can contribute to air pollution, with diverse activities such as lab work, cooking in dorms, and vehicle traffic, among others, causing interior and ambient air pollution. It is impossible to estimate how much air pollution affects the health and happiness of students without embarking on this type of research work. PURPOSE/AIM: Evaluation of meteorology parameters (i.e. temperature and relative humidity (RH)) and ambient air quality (CO, CO2 and particulate matter (PM2.5)) level at various locations within Lead City University, Ibadan is essential. METHODOLOGY: Ambient concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), Relative humidity (RH), Temperature (TEMP), and Particulate Matter (PM2.5) were measured in 15 locations across Lead City University over a two-week period (between 25th of June 2023 and 3rd of August 2023) with Bosean air quality detector -T-201. RESULTS: Morning temperatures in all the locations measured ranging from 23.7°C to 29.2°C while afternoon temperature fluctuates more significantly, with the lowest recorded at 27.2°C and the highest at a notably warmer 35.8°C in all the locations measured. The morning RH levels ranging from 63.8% to 74.7% while afternoon RH values, ranging from 58.2% to 63.4%. The finding also shows that afternoon CO2 levels range from 468.5 ppm to 971.6 ppm, with Location 13 having an unusually high average. Morning CO levels ranging from 4.1 ppm to 49 ppm, with location 13 showing the most highest figure of 184.2 ppm. CO2 and CO levels are mostly within acceptable ranges as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) that CO2 concentration levels in school buildings should kept below 1000 ppm and CO be below an average of nine parts per million (ppm) for any eight-hour period, and below 25 ppm for any one-hour period as an indicative benchmark of good indoor air quality (IAQ). Morning RH values range from 63.8% to 74.7%, with Location 1 having the highest average while afternoon RH values are between 58.9% and 67.7%, with Location 6 having the highest average. The relatively narrow variance in RH indicates that the dataset predominantly represents conditions with moderate humidity levels. Morning PM levels vary from 8.9 to 17.1µg/m³, suggesting diverse air quality conditions across the samples. In the afternoon, PM concentrations display a broader range, from 8.9 to an exceptionally high 436.1 in Location 13. Interestingly, all the air pollutants measured are still within the USA EPA permissible level of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for PM2.5, which is 35 μg/m3, and CO, which is 40 mg/m3 and CO2 between 400 - 1,000ppm CONCLUSION: Variability in these parameters has implications for human health therefore, adequate ventilation and pollution control measures is thereby recommended for the university management in order to improve indoor air quality.

Integrated Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Urban Road Dust: Implications for Human Health and Ecosystem Sustainability in Abeokuta, Nigeria

This research aims to comprehensively investigate the heavy metal contamination in road dust within the rapidly expanding urban area of Abeokuta, Nigeria. Focusing on potentially hazardous metals such as Cr, Co, As, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, and Pb, the study employs multivariate statistical techniques to identify sources, assess ecological and health hazards, and determine metal concentrations. Through the analysis of twenty road dust samples, variations in metal concentrations are observed, leading to the application of the geo-accumulation index, contamination factor, contamination degree, and pollution load index for contamination assessment. The results reveal varying degrees of contamination, with notable concentrations of Pb and Ni, indicating a deteriorating urban environment. Ecological risk assessments underscore potential threats to local flora and wildlife, while health risk evaluations emphasize urgent corrective actions needed, particularly for children exposed to heightened carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards. Factor analysis and correlation studies unveil common anthropogenic origins for several metals, shedding light on the need for pollution mitigation techniques in the face of rapid urbanization and industrialization. The research contributes valuable insights to environmental and public health evaluations in the Abeokuta region, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making for policymakers and the public.

Assessment of potentially toxic metals in selected local and foreign rice brands from Southwestern Nigeria: Implications for human health

This study evaluated the presence of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in different local and foreign rice brands from southwestern Nigeria. Eight brands were purchased in four states: Oyo, Osun, Ogun, and Lagos. A total of sixty-four rice samples were analyzed for PTMs (Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data collected were analyzed for descriptive and inferential statistics. Health risk assessments were conducted to evaluate non-carcinogenic risks, including hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR). The results revealed high concentrations of Pb (7.13±5.40 mg/kg) and Cd (8.71±3.81 mg/kg) in the local brand and a high Cr (5.91±3.71 mg/kg) in the foreign brand, which exceeded the WHO permissible limits of 0.2, 0.3, and 1.0 mg/kg, respectively. The health risk assessment revealed that the HQ values exceeded the permissible limit of 1.0 for Pb, Cd, and Cr in most of the rice brands, indicating adverse health effects. The CR data revealed health concerns for Cd, Cr, and Ni, with values exceeding the limit of 1.0 × 10−4. This suggests a potential risk of cancer development associated with consuming the locally produced and imported rice in the states under study.

Non-coding RNAs are pivotal regulators of gene and protein expression, exerting crucial influences on diverse biological processes. Their dysregulation is frequently implicated in the onset and progression of diseases, notably cancer. A profound comprehension of the intricate mechanisms governing ncRNAs is imperative for devising innovative therapeutic interventions against these debilitating conditions. Significantly, nearly 80% of our genome comprises ncRNAs, underscoring their centrality in cellular processes. The elucidation of ncRNA functions is pivotal for grasping the complexities of gene regulation and its implications for human health. Modern genome sequencing techniques yield vast datasets, stored in specialized databases. To harness this wealth of information and to understand the crosstalk of non-coding RNAs, knowledge of available databases is required, and many new sophisticated computational tools have emerged. These tools play a pivotal role in the identification, prediction, and annotation of ncRNAs, thereby facilitating their experimental validation. This Review succinctly outlines the current understanding of ncRNAs, emphasizing their involvement in disease development. It also highlights the databases and tools instrumental in classifying, annotating, and evaluating ncRNAs. By extracting meaningful biological insights from seemingly "junk" data, these tools empower scientists to unravel the intricate roles of ncRNAs in shaping human health.

Impact of Agricultural Practices on Nitrate Pollution in Groundwater in India

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine impact of agricultural practices on nitrate pollution in groundwater in India Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: a significant environmental concern with far-reaching implications for human health, ecosystem integrity, and water resource management. It is evident that agricultural activities such as fertilizer application, irrigation methods, and land management practices play a pivotal role in exacerbating nitrate contamination of groundwater. The studies highlighted the complex interactions between agricultural activities and hydrological processes, elucidating the pathways through which nitrates migrate from soil to groundwater. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Diffuse Pollution Theory, Hydrological Connectivity Theory &amp; Sustainable Agriculture Theory may be used to anchor future studies on impact of agricultural practices on nitrate pollution in groundwater in India. Encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that minimize nitrate pollution while maintaining agricultural productivity. This includes promoting precision agriculture techniques, cover cropping, and integrated nutrient management systems to optimize fertilizer use and reduce nitrate leaching. Strengthen regulations and enforcement mechanisms to limit nitrate pollution from agricultural activities. This may include setting stringent water quality standards for nitrate concentrations in groundwater and implementing monitoring programs to assess compliance.

Impact of food additives on neurodevelopmental processes in zebrafish (Danio rerio): Exploring circadian clock genes and dopamine system.

Assessing the impact of food additives on neurodevelopmental processes extends beyond traditional acute toxicity evaluations to address subtler, long-term effects. This study investigates the impact of common food additives (tartrazine, sunset yellow, sodium benzoate, and aspartame) on neurodevelopment in zebrafish embryos, observed from 18hours postfertilization (hpf) to 91 days postfertilization (dpf). Results show reduced 96hpf locomotor activity after aspartame exposure, with elevated additives correlating with decreased heart rates and induced neurodegenerative phenotypes, including bent tails and abnormal pigmentation. Although locomotor activity decreases at 7 days postexposure, a gradual recovery is observed. Transcriptome analysis indicates alterations in clock genes (Cry2 and Per2) and dopamine-related genes (NURR1 and tyrosine hydroxylase) in zebrafish larvae. Dietary additive exposure during embryonic development impacts clock genes, influencing dopamine activity and resulting in neurobehavioral changes. This study underscores potential risks associated with dietary additive exposure during critical developmental stages, warranting reconsideration of consumption guidelines, especially for expectant mothers. Observed neurodevelopmental toxicity, even below recommended levels, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding neurodevelopmental health in early life. Our findings contribute to understanding the neurotoxic effects of dietary additives, emphasizing the necessity of protecting neurodevelopment during vulnerable periods. This study is the first to demonstrate a direct correlation between food additives and the dysregulation of key circadian rhythm and dopaminergic genes in zebrafish, providing new insights into the neurodevelopmental impacts of dietary additives. These findings pave the way for further research into the molecular mechanisms and potential implications for human health.

Comprehensive assessment of water and sediment quality to support sustainable management practices and mitigate potential risks of trace metal pollution in the Johor River Basin, South Peninsular Malaysia

Human activities have caused concerns over the contamination of trace elements in aquatic systems due to their toxicity, long-lasting nature, and ability to accumulate in living organisms. This study evaluated the spatial pattern, environmental hazard, and potential health hazard of 13 trace metals in water and sediment samples collected from the Johor River basin using multivariate statistical techniques in order to identify the impact of both natural and human-related factors on the presence of trace metals in the area. The increased levels of metals in Station S1 indicated a significant impact from municipal, domestic, and industrial waste. The Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo) values for pollution and ecological indices in the sediment of the Johor River Basin ranged from -9.44 to 6.27. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values ranged from 0.05 to 0.18, and the Potential Ecological Risk Assessment (RI) values ranged from 2.15 to 11.18. These results indicate that the sediments in the Johor River Basin have a low risk of contamination from trace metals. The water's hazard quotient (HQ) had an average value of 0.0001, while the hazard index (HI) had an average value of 0.0003. It is important to increase stakeholders' understanding and concerns regarding the potential long-term human health and ecological implications associated with trace metals in Johor River water. The results of this study offer essential initial information for government entities to implement sustainable management strategies, reducing the likelihood of future trace metal contamination issues in the Johor River basin and similar regions.

Biosynthesis and Biotechnological Synthesis of Hydroxytyrosol.

Hydroxytyrosol (HT), a plant-derived phenolic compound, is recognized for its potent antioxidant capabilities alongside a spectrum of pharmacological benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. These attributes have propelled HT into the spotlight as a premier nutraceutical and food additive, heralding a new era in health and wellness applications. Traditional methods for HT production, encompassing physico-chemical techniques and plant extraction, are increasingly being supplanted by biotechnological approaches. These modern methodologies offer several advantages, notably environmental sustainability, safety, and cost-effectiveness, which align with current demands for green and efficient production processes. This review delves into the biosynthetic pathways of HT, highlighting the enzymatic steps involved and the pivotal role of genetic and metabolic engineering in enhancing HT yield. It also surveys the latest progress in the biotechnological synthesis of HT, examining innovative strategies that leverage both genetically modified and non-modified organisms. Furthermore, this review explores the burgeoning potential of HT as a nutraceutical, underscoring its diverse applications and the implications for human health. Through a detailed examination of both the biosynthesis and biotechnological advances in HT production, this review contributes valuable insights to the field, charting a course towards the sustainable and scalable production of this multifaceted compound.

Sustainable Napier Grass (Pennisetum purpureum) Biochar for the Sorptive Removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) from Water

The unregulated discharge of synthetic dyes from various anthropogenic and industrial activities has resulted in the contamination of different environmental compartments. These dyes can contaminate water bodies, soil, and even the air, resulting in many environmental and health issues. True colors may persist for long periods, thereby affecting the aesthetics and ecology of dye-contaminated areas. Furthermore, they pose potential risks to aquatic life and human health through the ingestion or absorption of dye-contaminated water or food. Acid orange 7 (AO7) is a synthetic azo dye used in the textile, tanning, food, pharmaceutical, paint, electronics, cosmetics, and paper and pulp industries. AO7 can have various human health implications, such as dermatitis, nausea, severe headache, respiratory tract irritation, and bone marrow depletion, due to its high toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. Efforts to regulate and mitigate dye pollution (AO7) are crucial for environmental sustainability and public health. Therefore, this study aimed to remove AO7 from water using sustainable biochar. This objective was accomplished by pyrolyzing dried Napier grass at 700 °C to develop affordable and sustainable Napier grass biochar (NGBC700). The developed biochar was characterized for its surface morphology, surface functional groups, surface area, and elemental composition. The yield, moisture content, and ash content of the NGBC700 were approximately 31%, 6%, and 21%, respectively. The NGBC700’s BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) surface area was 108 . Batch sorption studies were carried out at different pH levels (2–10), biochar dosages (1, 2, 3, and 4 ), and AO7 concentrations (10, 20, and 30 . The kinetic data were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) equation (R2 = 0.964–0.997) than the pseudo-first-order (PFO) equation (R2 = 0.789–0.988). The Freundlich isotherm equation (R2 = 0.965–0.994) fitted the sorption equilibrium data better than the Langmuir equation (R2 = 0.788–0.987), suggesting AO7 sorption on heterogenous NGBC700. The maximum monolayer AO7 adsorption capacities of the NGBC700 were 14.3, 12.7, and 8.4 at 10, 25, and 40 °C, respectively. The column AO7 sorption capacity was 4.4. Fixed-bed AO7 sorption data were fitted to the Thomas and Yoon–Nelson column models. The NGBC700 efficiently removed AO7 from locally available dye-laden wastewater. NGBC700 was regenerated using different NaOH concentrations. Possible interactions contributing to AO7 sorption on NGBC700 include hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and π–π electron donor–acceptor attractions. The estimated total preparation cost of NGBC700 was US$ 6.02 kg−1. The developed sustainable NGBC700 is potentially cost-effective and environmentally friendly, and it utilizes waste (Napier grass) to eliminate fatal AO7 dye from aqueous media.

Use of Metallic Mercury in Artisanal Gold Mining by Amalgamation: A Review of Temporal and Spatial Trends and Environmental Pollution

The introduction of mercury (Hg) into the environment by anthropogenic activities has resulted in negative implications for ecosystem functions and human health. Unlike the legacy of huge environmental pollution left by historic gold rushes in several developed countries, gold-rich nations in the developing world are currently witnessing what could qualify as a “new gold rush”, conducted primarily by small-scale mining operators and characterized by the use of metallic Hg (Hg0) in the amalgamation process to extract gold from crude ores. Once introduced into the environment, Hg0 can undergo biogeochemical transformations to produce Hg species such as methyl-Hg, with well-established adverse impacts on living organisms. This review summarizes published data on both historical and recent trends of the use of Hg0 in artisanal gold mining (AGM) on a global scale and emphasizes the impacts of AGM on the environment. To achieve this, we used citations from research conducted in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, obtained from several search engines and databases. Our findings show that, in addition to the well-known environmental and human health adverse effects of gold mining with Hg0, gold extraction by the Hg amalgamation technique is boosting the economy in parts of Africa, South America, and Asia. Unfortunately, this appealing aspect of AGM may not be easily halted, pending the creation of alternative employment. Therefore, there is a clear need for the development of safe and affordable gold extraction and purification technologies. Ultimately, the growth of this specific economic sector should be regulated to help protect both the environment and human health. Information compiled in this review should help to (i) improve the mapping of AGM-impacted soil and aquatic systems on a global scale and (ii) stimulate discussions and research on how to take down current barriers to the development and implementation of safe AGM methods.
