Slowed by commitment and hastened by obstacles: Exploring patterns of entrepreneur role exit in the EPOP dataset

Empirical understanding of why individuals become former entrepreneurs is not well-established. This investigation draws upon Identity Theory and Role Exit Theory to explore patterns in Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) Survey Project dataset. The key finding is a theory-consistent tension between commitment and obstacles encountered in predicting exit from the entrepreneur role. The likelihood of being a former entrepreneur is decreased by surrogate indicators of commitment such as having a business as primary personal income source. The likelihood is increased by proximal obstacles such as low levels of familial support. These patterns persist after statistical control for a wide swath of demographic and business characteristics. Based on these observed patterns, avenues for future research and implications for entrepreneurs, educators, and policymakers are considered.

Learning from success and failure: implications for entrepreneurs, SMEs, and policy

AbstractDespite the valuable contributions of earlier learning studies, the specific analysis of how entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) learn has been sidelined in the literature. Significant research opportunities remain open in various unexplored realms. By adopting a multidisciplinary perspective that combines a variety of frameworks (i.e., organizational, economic, and innovation management), the collection of 11 studies of this special issue dedicated to learning delivers valuable insights into how entrepreneurs and SMEs capitalize on learning processes, while identifying how these processes are affected by the type of experience (i.e., success and failure). This paper first overviews the contributions of the 11 papers included in the special issue. Next, we discuss a number of yet unresolved topics that deserve academic attention, paying special attention to entrepreneurs’ direct and indirect experiences, knowledge obsolescence caused by technology upgrading, and the role of digital technologies—i.e., Internet-of-things and artificial intelligence—in the learning processes.

The Airbnb case is our prime case study and it will be used to illustrate that most consumers benefit from 2-sided markets. Five major hypotheses are generated on the benefits of 2-sided markets, and implications for entrepreneurship are discussed.

Assessing the organizational and ecosystem factors driving the impact of transformative FinTech platforms in emerging economies

The financial market has been transformed by FinTech platforms, which offer innovative products and services. FinTech platforms use a combination of technologies to digitalize processes and introduce new business models with unique characteristics. The benefits of FinTech initiatives are not limited to boosting the economic development of emerging economies; they also have a transformative impact on society and stakeholders. The transformative impact enables the democratization of digital services, making them accessible to marginalized groups that the traditional financial banking system has excluded. Our study theorizes how FinTech organizational capabilities (digital technologies, digital infrastructures, and talented employees) and FinTech ecosystem conditions (competitors, regulations, digital gender gaps, and institutional gaps) impact inclusion, transparency, and market expansion inspired by transformative entrepreneurship. We tested it through a multilevel analysis using data from 333 worldwide large FinTech platforms combined with secondary data at the country level. Results provide insights into how digital infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and closing the gaps for disadvantaged groups are crucial determinant factors for increasing FinTech impacts in emerging economies. Several implications for entrepreneurs, society, and policymakers emerge as a call for fostering digital societies and FinTech industry in emerging economies.

The Influential Roles of Past Experience, Affective Attitude, and Destination Culture on Thai Tourists’ Likelihoods of Revisitation and Recommendation

Drawing upon tourism contribution, tourists’ visitations are the backbone of the country’s economic growth and development. This study thus aims to test a structural model for examining the relationship between tourists’ affection, cultural perceptions, their revisit, and recommendation intentions through the mediating role of past travel experience. To test our hypotheses, 547 questionnaires from Thai tourists were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that all hypotheses are substantially confirmed and statistically significant except for the affective attitude aspect which is not found to influence tourists’ revisit and recommendation intentions. Notwithstanding, we found that the tourist experience catalyzes revisit and recommendation intentions. However, tourists’ affection perception only nurtures their travel experience, but not for revisitation and recommendation. As such, this study sheds a new laser light on how tourists’ perceptions can influence future economic growth. The recommendations and suggestions on these findings are explained and can be an avenue for future research. Implications for entrepreneurs, policymakers, and the Asian business context are also presented.

Emotional Intelligence and Entrepreneurial Success: An Empirical Study of Entrepreneurs in the Saudi Market

This study empirically examines the influence of emotional intelligence on entrepreneurial success using a quantitative research survey administered to a sample of 306 Saudi entrepreneurs. The results revealed that emotionally intelligent entrepreneurs are more likely to succeed in their new venture. Furthermore, the research findings identified differences in the influence of emotional intelligence dimensions on entrepreneurship success. The findings of this study offer useful implications for entrepreneurs and practitioners who provide resources to entrepreneurial startups.

When Do You Enter? Entrepreneurial Firms’ Entry Timing and Product Performance in the Digital Platform Market

The digital platform market has evolved into a critical location for firms to engage in innovation and entrepreneurship. However, there is no clear answer to the question of when entrepreneurial firms should enter the digital platform market in order to gain a sustainable competitive advantage. A balanced panel and an individual fixed effect model were built using monthly product data from game developers on the Steam platform. Furthermore, in accordance with first-mover advantage theory, this study empirically investigated the impact of entry timing on product performance of entrepreneurial firms in the digital platform market, as well as the moderating effect of product updates. The results show that the impact of entrepreneurial firms’ entry timing on product performance in the digital platform market has a U-shaped relationship, which is moderated by product updates. These findings not only have implications for entrepreneurs looking to compete in the digital platform market, but also contribute to the sustainable development of the digital platform ecosystem.

RASCON: Future of Rehabilitation and Allied Health Sciences in Pakistan

Healthcare is a crucial aspect in our society. With the improvement in technology and education, more people are opting for this profession. In recent decades, rehabilitation, allied health sciences and emerging fields in biological sciences have received considerable attention at both international and national platforms. The Superior University has the largest and highly qualified faculty in the key disciplines of Rehabilitation & Allied Health Sciences. In Current Senior, Faculty of Allied Health has Organized RASCON, the first ever international conference, on 9th-11th December 2022 under the theme “Interdisciplinary approaches to create socio-economic impact through research, innovation and commercialization for healthcare professionals and scientists.” The conference has attributed to augmentation and expansion of research, education and commercialization in these domains. The main objective of this conference is to bring together the health care professionals, Allied Health care professionals, Rehabilitation specialists, Physical Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Nutritionists, Occupational Therapists, Leading scientists, Researchers, Educationists and allied health care professionals to exchange interdisciplinary approaches to contribute to socio-economic impact to achieve SDGs. It has been planned to provide an intercontinental platform for the sharing of scientific knowledge and hands on training sessions. Similar to other conferences, while the major audience included researchers around the globe, it specifically provided a research knowledge sharing venture for the students, which are going to be our future researchers In this regard, various workshops (26) were conducted on 9th December in collaboration with different hospitals and industries. The main objective of these workshops was to provide hands on training and facilitate students to grab emerging technologies relating to their respective fields. On 10 and 11 December, around 17 International and 56 National keynote speakers attended the conference to present their latest research in their specialized fields. . Our global speakers included professors from USA, Canada, Malaysia, Uk, Iran, China, Germany, Sri Lanka, Australia, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Thailand and South Korea. Furthermore, participants of this conference also presented scientific posters highlighting the outcomes of their recent projects. Additionally, several talk sessions were also conducted to answer the queries of the students and other participants. This conference was successfully held with the collaboration of National/Multinational industries including food industries, academic institutes and healthcare sectors. The prime knowledge products of RASCON 22 were: research articles, patents, books, research protocols, manuals, policies, advanced technologies in therapeutics, outreach and assessment resources, blogs on socio-economic impacts of research, and finally the entrepreneurial implications of research. Of all the planned undertakings, the greatest impact was seen in societal projects, followed by manuals, advanced therapeutic technologies, blogs, policies and protocols, in ascending order. The manuals provided information and necessary steps for improvements in physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Some key protocols included posture control, communication and swallowing management along with a stepwise diagnosis protocol for dyslexia – a learning disability that has affected more than 700 million people worldwide and 12 million children in Pakistan alone. Correspondingly, the advanced therapeutic technologies included robotic rehabilitation options in the fields of orthotics, cochlear implantation and prosthetics. Major polices focused on the investment and management so as to build a high-quality workforces and services for improving rehabilitation combined with a feedback system via data collection for continual improvement. All of these would ultimately have a strong societal impact in the form of community-based rehabilitation culminating in the better quality of life. Are seed accelerators status springboards for startups? Or sand traps?

AbstractResearch SummaryRecent research finds participating in seed accelerators can improve startups' access to growth and funding, but effects are highly heterogeneous. Less understood is whether accelerator participation can also help startups obtain higher‐status early partners. On one hand, participation may improve startups' quality and signal quality to desirable partners. Yet research suggests reasons any signaling effects might be quite small or even negative, since accelerators might be perceived as a “market for lemons.” Using two complementary and proprietary datasets of U.S. startups, we find many seed accelerators are indeed springboards—associated with startups raising from higher‐status investors—but that others have very limited and some slight negative effects. We examine contingencies and mechanisms, and conclude with contributions to literatures on accelerators and organizational status.Managerial SummaryRecent research has found that some seed accelerators help startups' grow and raise funds. In this research, we examine whether accelerators also help startups gain higher‐status investors, which are desirable for the advice, signals, and networks they offer. Yet there are conflicting reasons why accelerators may help or hurt startups in obtaining higher‐status investors. Using two proprietary datasets of U.S. startups, our results suggest many accelerators like Techstars and Y Combinator have notable benefits in helping startups raise from higher‐status investors. Yet we also see substantial differences across accelerators. Interestingly, effects do not appear sensitive to regional entrepreneurial activity. We conclude with implications for entrepreneurs, accelerators, and policy makers.

Tinkering or orchestrating? The value of country-level asset management capability and entrepreneurship outcomes

Drawing on entrepreneurship policy literature and resource orchestration theory, we ask whether asset management capabilities of countries explain differences in entrepreneurship outcomes. We define the term asset management capability as the orchestration of inputs and outputs to improve entrepreneurial activity. Using time-series data of 512 inputs and outputs in 219 countries (2000–2018), we model for non-linear dynamic latent variables, allow for inefficiencies and slack, deconfound the model to improve predictive inference, and use cross-validation. The results illustrate systematic variations in asset management capabilities across countries and have implications for entrepreneurship and policymakers.

A meta-analysis of green and sustainable business models: A comprehensive approach

Sustainable development is an essential purpose behind formulation of government policies because of its contribution to socio-economic and environmental well-being. The research conducted over the last few decades have emphasized that green and sustainable enterprises support this. As a result, it is imperative to ascertain the link between green and sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Thus, this study aims to examine how green entrepreneurship relates to the sustainable development and growth of a sustainable enterprise. It further studies the relationship between independent variables (economic (ECD), social (SD), strategic sustainability (SSD), and environment development (ED) with dependent variables (green (GE), sustainable entrepreneurship (SE), and sustainable development (SDG). Cause and effect relationship used to develop a conceptual model, and random-effect meta-analytic structural equation modeling (meta-SEM) used to evaluate latent relationships between this relationship. The work also analyses how ventures properties (venture age, venture size, and venture types) have moderating effects on this relationship. Secondary data used and data obtained from prior research publications. This study contains a comprehensive analysis of the sustainability literature, including one additional dimension with the current three dimensions of sustainability in a unified framework, and expanding its relationship with green and sustainable business. The study also provides significant theoretical contributions and implications for entrepreneurship and sustainability literature.

Complexity of Family Businesses in El Salvador: A Structural Equation Model

Family businesses play an important role in sustainable development in Latin American countries, providing economic benefits and leading to a reduction in violence. Until now, family businesses, their characteristics, and the factors that influence their economic development have not been studied in this region. Identifying the appropriate variables contributing to successful family businesses in this region and clarifying the relationships between these variables are important for developing a management model that supports the stability and growth of these businesses and their influence on sustainable development in the region. To this end, this study aims to understand the complexity of family businesses classified as small and medium-sized companies located in San Salvador, El Salvador. This study represents a first approximation and application of this model in one of the representative economies of Latin America. Our literature review allowed us to establish a basic management model incorporating the complexity of family businesses in this regional context. Using a partial least squares structural equation model (SEM-PLS) and a database of 181 family firms, we identify the variables that best explain the management model through the following structures: financial management, business management, family complexity, and company complexity. The results show that in conditions where high interest rates coexist with political conflicts and a complex economic situation, family businesses constitute a pillar for the development of the country towards sustainability. This study has practical implications for entrepreneurs and professionals. This research proposes a management model that allows us to identify the variables that increase or decrease the complexity of family businesses and guides entrepreneurs in taking concrete actions to reduce this complexity. In general terms, this model explains that financial performance depends on business management, the complexity of the family, and the complexity of the company. Finally, based on the results obtained in El Salvador, a clear direction for future research is established, through which it is possible to study the variables that may reduce the complexity of the family and the company in other countries with similar socioeconomic characteristics.

Strategic Analysis of Entrepreneurial Activities: An Evaluative Research Study of North East India

Indian Women are driving their foot in the fi eld of entrepreneurship and establishing successfully in the entrepreneurial world. They are breaking the walls of society and with their intelligence for notable performance as entrepreneur. Indian women are now outperformed men in many areas. Women have been recognized as key contributor for sustainable development. Women entrepreneurs signify the fastest growing category of entrepreneurship worldwide and have received, especially in recent years, the attention of many academics. Present research study was conducted with 120 women entrepreneurs selected from three districts of Assam which included both registered and unregistered women entrepreneurs. Data was collected through structured interview schedule. The study shown that personal motivational factor was found as one of the most infl uencing factors compared with other two motivational factors i.e. Economic and Social factor in the gainful profession of weaving. The conclusion of this study also have implications for entrepreneurs as well as the policymakers who work for the improvement of entrepreneurs

Paradox of diversity in the collective brain.

Human societies are collective brains. People within every society have cultural brains—brains that have evolved to selectively seek out adaptive knowledge and socially transmit solutions. Innovations emerge at a population level through the transmission of serendipitous mistakes, incremental improvements and novel recombinations. The rate of innovation through these mechanisms is a function of (1) a society's size and interconnectedness (sociality), which affects the number of models available for learning; (2) fidelity of information transmission, which affects how much information is lost during social learning; and (3) cultural trait diversity, which affects the range of possible solutions available for recombination. In general, and perhaps surprisingly, all three levers can increase and harm innovation by creating challenges around coordination, conformity and communication. Here, we focus on the ‘paradox of diversity’—that cultural trait diversity offers the largest potential for empowering innovation, but also poses difficult challenges at both an organizational and societal level. We introduce ‘cultural evolvability’ as a framework for tackling these challenges, with implications for entrepreneurship, polarization and a nuanced understanding of the effects of diversity.
