Evaluation of sustainable manufacturing performance – A case illustration with multistakeholder perspective

Increasing awareness on achieving the targets of sustainable development goals led to the various discussions on sustainability in manufacturing applications. Sustainable manufacturing has been considered as one of the key factors for achieving sustainable consumption and production. Considering the advantages, sustainable manufacturing has been discussed with various perspectives in order to improve the sustainable manufacturing performances. This study considers one of the perspectives where other studies are limited within the context of sustainable manufacturing performances, multi-stakeholder perspectives. The sustainable manufacturing performances has been collected and evaluated with multi criteria decision making methodology, best worst method. The three multi stakeholder perspectives have been considered for this study which includes manufacturer perspective, customer perspective and government perspective. The collected sustainable manufacturing performances were evaluated based on these different multi-stakeholder perspectives, in order to understand the similarities and differences among multiple stakeholders in the implementation of sustainable manufacturing through its performances. The detailed discussion of obtained results was explored and acknowledged with existing literature support along with the response from case industrial managers. The similarities and differences of opinion among different stakeholders has been explored to provide fruitful contributions to both academic and scientific community. The key managerial implication of this study is that assisting the industrial managers to focus on influential sustainable manufacturing performances instead of focussing less influential ones based on the opinions of different stakeholders.

A Review on Sustainable Value Creation Factors in Sustainable Manufacturing Systems

Abstract This article describes in detail the elements of value creation through the transformations and flexibility, which is carried out in the implementation of sustainable manufacturing. The purpose of this study is to generate the criteria or elements that build the sustainable value creation process through a literature review analysis. The overall classification of sustainable manufacturing implementation discussed shows several essential factors that support this. The process of review studies on selected papers strengthens the classification carried out to obtain the necessary elements of sustainable value creation. The value created can later be a hallmark of the company's superiority to survive the market competition. Besides, the role of partnerships, such as collaboration indicates a positive influence in generating value creation to increasing the company's competitive rate. In addition, the importance of partnership processes such as collaboration and cooperation between stakeholders, is needed to generate value creation to increase the company's competitive level. The partnership process is one of the critical factors in creating sustainable value in achieving sustainable manufacturing in the future.

Sustainable electronics product design and manufacturing: State of art review

ABSTRACT The paper reviews the studies on sustainable electronics reported in the literature and determines opportunities through which the expansion of sustainable electronic products is possible. The sustainable growth of electronics products from product, process and material dimensions, and modelling of sustainable electronics were reviewed based on 57 papers from the literature. The review findings were used to identify the methods for improvement of the sustainability of electronic products. The study proposes a sustainability framework for electronic product design. The significant finding of the investigation reported in this review is that the deployment efforts of sustainability in electronics design and manufacturing are in the nascent stages and the attempts enhance the effectiveness of the implementation of sustainable manufacturing. The study investigates research studies from the viewpoint of implementing sustainable electronics product design and manufacturing. Besides, the deployment of the proposed framework to other organisations could also be validated. The findings of this literature investigation specified the need for enhancing the usefulness of sustainable electronics design and manufacturing approach. This study logically presents sustainable electronics product design and manufacturing under four critical perspectives. The study recognises research gaps and proposes methods for improvement.

Experimental investigation on analysis of performance of vortex tube through implementation of sustainable manufacturing

Sustainable manufacturing is the process of creating manufactured product that reduce harmful environmental impact, conserve energy and resources. It brings eco-friendly environment and are safe for employee, communities and consumers. Awareness of sustainable manufacturing is increasing in competitive world. Many industries have taken steps for green growth ensuring that process is environmentally and economically sustainable. Importance of this study is to attain sustainable in milling. Cutting fluid is used in CNC machine to reduce heat generation in metal cutting process but usage of cutting fluid causes hazardness to environment and employee. To minimise the hazardness cooling air technique is used. Cooling air technique is achieved using vortex tube. Taguchi optimisation technique was used to find optimal cutting parameters. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is also applied to analysis the data obtained. The process was optimised for minimal flank wear considering environmental concern as a prime importance.

Application of Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision-Making for Selecting the Best Sustainable Orientation

Sustainability is an idea encompassed with various aspects still under exploration in addition to its vibrant and comprehensive nature. The Brundtland commission articulated that sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. A plunge for supporting the ideology of sustainability orientations with respect to manufacturing and their implementation are still in need, but the quantum of factors increases in the process of sustainability orientation selection during the implementation of sustainable manufacturing. Several undecided factors are intrinsic in the implementation of new sustainable manufacturing. Decision-making methods using probabilities to represent the three orientations such as alternate material change, manufacturing process change and design change of achieving sustainability cannot be used to prioritize them. Therefore, a fuzzy multiple attribute decision-making (FMADM) method was developed with a three-level hierarchical decision-making models based on the economic, environment and social aspects of sustainable development, to evaluate the three orientations involved in sustainable manufacturing. A case study was conducted in an Indian automotive component manufacturing organization with the FMADM model developed and the results effectively reflected the characteristics of the three orientations of sustainable manufacturing.

A CASE STUDY ANALYSIS OF SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING PRACTICEIN MALAYSIAN MANUFACTURING FIRM

The aim of the present study is to explore the implementation ofsustainable manufacturing practice in Malaysian manufacturing firms. Inspecific, there are three research questions that guide the study such as: (i) which type of sustainable manufacturing practice is being implemented by the studied firms?;(ii) why do the studied firmstend to implement sustainable manufacturing practice in theiroperations?;and (iii) what are the impacts of implementing sustainable manufacturing practice on the firms. An electrical and electronic firm located in Penang was chosen as the study sample, and the data was collectedfrom the firmby using semi-structured questions.A manager who had both technical and management knowledge and experience inoperational and business activitiesin the chosen firm was interviewed.The interview was recorded,transcribed, and analysedbased on the research questions.Thefindings of the present study discover the varioustypes of sustainable manufacturing practices beingimplemented by the firm, two drivers (i.e. internal and external drivers) that motivate the firm to implement sustainable manufacturing practice, andthe impacts of sustainable manufacturing implementation in the aspect of economic, environmental, and social sustainability of the firm. The present study is very useful as it offers some theoretical and practical contributions.

Sustainability in Manufacturing through Distributed Manufacturing Systems (DMS)

A growing number of manufacturing companies are working on the implementation of sustainable manufacturing and business processes. The objective of sustainable manufacturing initiatives is the creation of products by means of energy-efficient and resource-saving manufacturing systems. Furthermore, customer satisfaction will be achieved in future not only through the creation of products, but also through socially and environmentally responsible as well as economically efficient concepts of manufacturing avoiding negative effects for society. Distributed manufacturing systems (DMS) are currently discussed in science as a possible approach for the realization of sustainable manufacturing. Decentralized networks of adaptable and flexible mini-factories are not only helpful to reduce emissions through reduction of transports, but also serve for the growth and development of regional economic cycles. This paper gives an overview of trends towards DMS as well as reasons and arguments why Distributed Manufacturing Systems are appropriate concepts for more sustainable manufacturing.
