The Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure of the Multicenter Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research Biobank: A Potential Blueprint for Other Biobanks.

Objective: Biobanks play a crucial role in fundamental and translational research by storing valuable biomaterials and data for future analyses. However, the design of their information technology (IT) infrastructures is often customized to specific requirements, thereby lacking the ability to be used for biobanks comprising other (types of) diseases. This results in substantial costs, time, and efforts for each new biobank project. The Dutch multicenter Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research (AOCR) biobank has developed an innovative, reusable IT infrastructure capable of adaptation to various biobanks, thereby enabling cost-effective and efficient implementation and management of biobank IT systems. Methods and Results: The AOCR IT infrastructure incorporates preexisting biobank software, mainly managed by Health-RI. The web-based registration tool Ldot is used for secure storage and pseudonymization of patient data. Clinicopathological data are retrieved from the Netherlands Cancer Registry and the Dutch nationwide pathology databank (Palga), both established repositories, reducing administrative workload and ensuring high data quality. Metadata of collected biomaterials are stored in the OpenSpecimen system. For digital pathology research, a hematoxylin and eosin-stained slide from each patient's tumor is digitized and uploaded to Slide Score. Furthermore, adhering to the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles, genomic data derived from the AOCR samples are stored in cBioPortal. Conclusion: The IT infrastructure of the AOCR biobank represents a new standard for biobanks, offering flexibility to handle diverse diseases and types of biomaterials. This infrastructure bypasses the need for disease-specific, custom-built software, thereby being cost- and time-effective while ensuring data quality and legislative compliance. The adaptability of this infrastructure highlights its potential to serve as a blueprint for the development of IT infrastructures in both new and existing biobanks.

Understanding the impact of technological flexibility at different decision levels to reap enterprise resource planning benefits

PurposeThis paper aims to provide a framework regarding Information Technology (IT) Flexibility in Supply Chain and its relationship with the benefits we could see from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Furthermore, this research explores the moderating effect of Process Integration Capability in the relationship between IT flexibility and ERP benefits.Design/methodology/approachThis research model will help organizations get additional benefits from their ERP systems that incurred huge costs, time and multiple resources at their implementation. The technique used for analyzing data is structural equation modeling (SEM), and data is collected from 107 respondents through a questionnaire from Business and IT Professionals.FindingsThe study findings reveal a positive and significant relationship between IT flexibility and ERP systems benefits; moreover, results also confirmed that the organization's process integration capability significantly increased the benefits of ERP systems. The findings also highlight empirical evidence about the significance of the top-to-bottom approach investing in IT flexibility and the bottom-to-top approach during the implementation of IT systems for successful implementations.Practical implicationsThis study has various implications for practitioners that help them successfully implement and long-term viability of their IT infrastructure.Originality/valueThis study's findings will help IT managers and strategists make effective decisions for creating IT flexibility in alignment with the strategic goals to realize the desired results expected from ERP systems and implementations of new IT systems.

Targeting zero medication administration errors in the pediatric intensive care unit: A Quality Improvement project

BackgroundMedication errors and adverse drug events have a significant impact on mortality and morbidity among hospitalized children, and are more likely to occur in critical care settings due to the fast-paced environment and patient vulnerability. There is no exception to this rule in our pediatric intensive care unit, a 28-bed unit at a tertiary care children's hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Problem assessmentA medication administration error rate of 6.25–8.05/1000 patient days was reported in our unit (48 errors), taking into account only errors that reached patients. Toward improving patient safety, a project was launched to reduce medication errors. DesignMultidisciplinary quality improvement team reviewed baseline data and analyzed medication errors that occurred in 2019. Five Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles were implemented. As an outcome measure, the medication error rate was monitored. ResultsThe outcome measure of medication administration error rates was monitored quarterly. An improvement of 75% during the first quarter of 2021 to a rate of zero medication errors/1000 patient days during the first quarter of 2022. A decrease in medication errors was attributed to improved situational awareness and increased compliance with assisted technology. ConclusionMedication errors can be decreased by deploying various interventions utilizing human- and technology-based approaches. When it comes to reducing medication errors in the pediatric intensive care unit, a multidisciplinary approach is paramount. Implications for clinical practiceThis study suggests several ways to reduce medication errors. Implementing information technology systems and involving pharmacists in medication management can help prevent errors. Enhancing teamwork, communication, and collaboration among healthcare professionals is also important. Clinical risk management strategies, nursing interventions, and adherence to medication safety guidelines are essential, especially for pediatric and neonatal populations. Considering these clinical implications can guide healthcare professionals and organizations in addressing medication errors and enhancing patient safety.

THE OBJECTIVE NEED TO IMPLEMENT AN INFORMATION SYSTEM TO AUTOMATE DAILY TASKS IN RECRUITMENT WORKFLOW

This article emphasizes the demand and significance of the implementation and integration of an information system for the nowadays recruitment process optimization. The article introduces the inherent characteristics and nature of information systems and outlines an essential range of tasks they can perform in the context of recruitment. This research examines and determines the direction of implementation of information technology systems, automation, and regular recruiters' routine tasks and processes optimization using artificial intelligence assistance. The primary objectives of the implementation of the proposed information system are quality improvements, human resources saving, unification of the processes, and introduction of the end-to-end solution for candidate interviewing. The weak sides of existing processes, solutions, and the correlation between the effectiveness of the recruitment workflow and work automation are determined. The article conclusively proves that the introduction and utilization of new information system tools and solutions are indispensable conditions for successful up-to-date recruitment and it would be significant input into business development strategies since it will help to not only save human resources but as well work for the company's market brand, reputation gain and significantly decrease risks of wrong hiring.

Analisa Pengaruh Penerapan Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) terhadap Kinerja Supply Chain Management (SCM) pada PT Toyota Astra Motor

Technological developments in the world have changed companies to participate in using technology as a means of improving company performance. Companies can implement information technology systems that assist in terms of finance, company audits, and supply chain management (SCM) performance which is called enterprise resource planning (ERP). This study will discuss the effect of implementing ERP on SCM performance at the company PT Toyota Astra Motor. The method used is a qualitative approach and also a study of literature. PT Toyota Astra Motor has implemented an ERP application that is used, namely SAP (Standard Application Product in Data Processing) version ECC 6.0 and also has supply chain management which helps in expediting and accelerating the company's production and marketing processes to meet the needs of their consumers.

Utilizing e-learning and user loyalty with user satisfaction as mediating variable in public sector context

The advent of information technology has caused people to consider how they can make effective and efficient decisions in various activities. The implementation of information technology systems is expected to be advantageous in facilitating these activities because such systems can provide decision-making support and contribute to the success of endeavors in areas such as business, economic, social politics, and education. One common tool used in learning systems is e-learning applications. This research aims to analyze the effect of e-learning on user loyalty with user satisfaction. This research, conducted in Jakarta, is explanatory in nature, targeting individuals who have utilized e-learning applications in their activities, particularly in the field of public sector activities, with a sample size of 163 public sector employees. Data was collected through online questionnaires, and hypothesis testing was conducted through the PLS-SEM method. The results indicate that service quality and perceived value have positive impacts on user satisfaction, which in turn, positively influences user loyalty.

Electronic applications in the field of government, commonly referred to as e-Government, to optimize the service of certain tasks and functions. Government Resources Management System (GMRS) of Central Java Province, is an integrated system of government of Central Java Province. One of the implementations of the e-Government application available, is the vehicle tax application service, which is named SAKPOLE. The results of the study concluded that the SAKPOLE application for the administration of motor vehicle tax payments had not been fully utilized by motor vehicle taxpayers in Central Java Province. The SAKPOLE application has no effect on motor vehicle tax revenues in Central Java Province.</span></em></p>

Efforts to improve the quality of education in Indonesia are carried out in various ways. One of them is by changing conventional education into technology-based education. The strategy in improving the quality of education is done by applying information technology in learning in schools. With this application, it will support the learning process that produces skilled students in anticipating the progress of science and technology. The purpose of this study was to find out how teachers and the application of information technology in improving the quality of learning. The research used is a qualitative approach from the results of observations, interviews and documentation. The subject used in this study is the MI Miftahul Ulum Bago Pasirian institution. Based on research conducted by researchers, the roles played by teachers in learning are: first, encouraging students to interact with learning resources or learning media; second, encouraging students to have discussions with their friends; third, asking questions from the teacher to students or students to their friends; fourth, monitoring students' perceptions and thinking processes; fifth, monitor and observe the learning outcomes; sixth, as a mediator in student discussions; and seventh, evaluating to always improve student learning outcomes. Information technology systems implementation and processes of integration and disintegration: case study evidence from Air Greenland

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the impact of information technology (IT) system implementation on the integration of data and information between sales and accounting departments, and how data integration affects relations with supplier and customers.Design/methodology/approachThe change between three different reservation and distribution systems in an airline company was assessed over 20 years based on qualitative data collected while events unfolded and interviews that traced events retrospectively.FindingsThis study finds that data integration challenges affect the capacity to use revenue and sales data for control purposes and integrating with suppliers and customers. The systems either facilitated the ability to integrate sales and accounting data or enabled integration in wider supplier and customer networks. The implementation of different reservation and distribution systems resulted in a trade-off between integration within the firm and into wider customer and supplier networks.Research limitations/implicationsData were mainly obtained from the focal firm, Air Greenland. The protracted study period meant that the data were not as concentrated as they would have been had the analysis been performed over a shorter duration or had the focus been on one implementation process.Originality/valueExtant research suggests that integration challenges when implementing IT systems are caused by differences in information needs between groups with different logics. The authors illustrate how data integration is also a crucial challenge when implementing IT systems.

Stakeholders’ different perspectives of critical success and risk factors in a case of large-scale system implementation across Africa

Background: Most large information technology (IT) projects fail, costing businesses billions of rand while delivering limited benefits. This has stimulated considerable, yet inconclusive, research into the reasons for project success and failure. Objectives: The study explores a massive IT system implementation project, throughout Africa, that cost the organisation almost four times its annual profits and taken more than 10 years. The majority of South African and other African companies in the financial services sector still run on old legacy IT systems and will have to undergo similar exercises. The conceptual model of critical success factors presented here could be used as a high-level blueprint for these future large information system implementations. Method: The research questions required in-depth exploration of circumstances and incidents during the project life cycle and the case study method was the most appropriate design. Thirteen stakeholders were interviewed in a semi-structured interview format. Results: This exploratory case study delivers a comprehensive conceptual model that covers the high-level phases of successful large IT project delivery. It shows that project success only occurs when all critical tasks across the effectiveness and efficiency dimensions of a project are planned, performed and measured accurately. Conclusion: The differences in perspectives between stakeholder groups in the project ecosystem are highlighted, as well as their consequences. The study also contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive formula for the accurate identification of overall project risk.

The final result expected is the design of the service-oriented architecture based project management system which built through top-down approach that focuses on improving the effectiveness of business process.

Downtime in Digital Hospitals: An Analysis of Patterns and Causes Over 33 Months.

The use of health information technology (IT) is increasing around the world. However, as complex IT systems are implemented, new types of errors are introduced. These can disrupt workflow and care delivery, and even lead to patient harm. The purpose of this paper is to examine the patterns and causes of IT system downtime in a hospital setting. We examined all the downtime events that were recorded by a hospital IT department from February 2010 to October 2012. On average downtime disrupted care delivery for 49 hours per year with 51% of total downtime between 9 am and 5 pm. These results show that there is a need for safer design and implementation of IT systems. Further studies are required to measure the effects of downtime on care delivery and patient outcomes in digital hospitals.

Improving the quality of cancer care in America through health information technology

A recent report from the Institute of Medicine titled Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis, identifies improvement in information technology (IT) as essential to improving the quality of cancer care in America. The report calls for implementation of a learning healthcare IT system: a system that supports patient-clinician interactions by providing patients and clinicians with the information and tools necessary to make well informed medical decisions and to support quality measurement and improvement. While some elements needed for a learning healthcare system are already in place for cancer, they are incompletely implemented, have functional deficiencies, and are not integrated in a way that creates a true learning healthcare system. To achieve the goal of a learning cancer care delivery system, clinicians, professional organizations, government, and the IT industry will have to partner, develop, and incentivize participation.

Involve Users or Fail

Repeated surveys, and most notably those by the Standish Group, suggest that a substantial proportion of Information Technology (IT) projects fail. The literature suggests that this is in part due to a lack of user involvement in the project. The authors’ research describes the case study of a major IT system implementation project in East Africa. The paper reports on the results of both an online questionnaire and interviews with key participants. The authors’ findings suggest that the subsequent failure of this project was in large part attributable to a lack of user involvement in the definition of requirements and implementation of the system. There did not appear to be an organisational culture that recognised the significance of such participation in the project. Although there are issues of definition raised, such as the definition of success and failure, this work supports previous findings that user involvement is a key factor in IT project success and failure.

Toward Zero Faults In Passenger Flights: A Proposed Framework

The purpose of this paper is the creation of a new framework for airlines to implement information technology systems that will aid in the prevention of service failures and passenger complaints during air travel. This framework can lower the amount of service lapses and subsequent customer complaints, helping to improve service quality and the airline’s reputation through proactive monitoring of the services provided to passengers and avoiding failures. The proposed system is based upon IT systems that are used extensively to continuously monitor the airline’s service infrastructure in the following ways: 1) detecting and preventing service lapses, 2) notifying passengers of malfunctions, and 3) following up with customers. The value of implementing these systems is illustrated through various scenarios that are likely to occur on commercial flights and typically result in complaints from - and discomfort for - travelers.

This research aims to formulate a catalog of ERP implementation benefits to measure ERP implementation success in the organizations. The benefits catalog was developed by using the five dimensions from Shang and Seddon of ERP benefits framework and 73 subcategories of dimension from Ranti’s Generic IS/IT value. Initiated in an agricultural company Indonesia, the research identify the ERP bring benefit to the company in five dimension: operational, managerial, strategic, IT infrastructure, and organizational with the total of 25 categories and 41 subcategories were accepted.

Evaluating Bar Coding‐Aided Medication Administration through Identification of Nursing Work Deficiencies

AbstractHealth care information technology (IT) systems manage administrative and clinical processes more accurately and efficiently. However, their effects on clinical work flow are still not fully understood. In this article, we investigate the bar‐coded medication administration (BCMA) system for its effect on nurses working in inpatient departments. Evaluation is applied by examining work deficiencies before and after the IT system implementation based on a proposed nursing work model. A list of nurse‐perceived risks of work deficiencies related to the current BCMA system has been identified. Results show five main deficiencies that are mainly related to aspects of the IT environment and work schedule/process, including increased workload, IT systems downtime, unclear orders/task schedules, reduced time for patient‐care tasks, and redundant documentation. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the reciprocal relationship between IT implementation and health care work system. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Health Care Reform Requires Rethinking on the IT Strategy

True Health Care Organization (THC) was a national leading health care organization. Its CEO and the management team were concerned with the implications of multiple laws, aimed at improving health care in the United States, passed that impacted the health care insurance industry including the THC Company. The CEO and the management felt that the company faced many challenges as it looked for solutions to the requirements of the new laws. Their industry was going through an unprecedented change due to the new laws and a general consensus that health care should be improved. They had concluded that the solution to the new challenges faced by their company laid in implementing the new Information Technology systems. The CEO and management were acutely aware that it was not easy to implement these changes by implementing Information Technology systems. The challenges that they were concerned about included skillsets of their work force, the disjointed nature of their current information technology infrastructure and the urgency of implementing all the changes within a short period.
