Challenges of scaling agile in large enterprises and implications for project management

PurposeThis study seeks to illuminate the managerial tensions inherent in implementing scaled agile (on the organizational, top management, middle management and team levels) and to frame these challenges within the broader context of project management.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a grounded theory approach and delves into a qualitative dataset sourced from 34 interviews with subject matter experts actively engaged in scaling agile initiatives within large organizations spanning various industries. Additionally, the data have been enriched through a comprehensive literature review of the existing body of knowledge on scaling agile.FindingsAs a result of our investigation, we propose a framework of managerial tensions in scaling agile in large corporate settings and a series of research propositions and questions that may contribute significantly to the body of knowledge surrounding the phenomenon of “deprojectification” and propose agenda for the future studies in the field of project management.Research limitations/implicationsThe study also carries significant managerial implications. Firstly, based on the insights from the practice of scaling agile in large corporate setting, management can build awareness of the challenges inherent of transitioning to agile practices. This may help to anticipate the possible problems and proactively develop strategies how to address them. Secondly, management can be instructed about contingencies inherent in scaling agile, along with the potential disfunctions and side effects (unintended outcomes) that may emerge during the transition process. Thirdly, project management practitioners can gain insights on how scaling agile may cause shifts in the approach to managing projects, project team management and competencies that need to be developed to cope with environments where various approaches to managing projects coexist.Practical implicationsThese insights can aid in the agile transition process, beginning with directing managerial attention toward contextual factors and progressing through potential challenges at the organizational, top management, middle management and team levels. Furthermore, the study highlights possible dysfunctionalities and side effects of scaling agile, shedding light on the “dark side” of agile.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the expansion of the empirical database on the implementation of agile practices in large organizational settings. It plays a role in defining and delineating the phenomenon of scaling agile within the context of project management and outlines a research agenda for future project management studies. Additionally, our study adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the “deprojectification” effect that can occur during the scaling of agile. Lastly, it establishes connections between project management and software development literature regarding the implementation of agile at scale.

Exploring the Implementation of Agile Project Management in the United States Construction Industry: Benefits, Challenges, and Success Factors

This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the implementation of agile project management methodologies in the construction industry in the United States. The research utilized a review of literature methodology to examine the benefits, challenges, and success factors associated with adopting agile practices in construction projects. By analyzing past studies and scholarly publications, a comprehensive understanding of the topic was achieved. The study highlighted several key benefits of agile project management in the construction industry. These benefits included improved adaptability to changing project requirements, increased client satisfaction through enhanced collaboration and continuous feedback, and greater project transparency and visibility. Additionally, agile methodologies were found to foster more effective risk management and improved project delivery timelines. Challenges encountered during the implementation of agile practices in the construction industry were also identified. These challenges encompassed resistance to change, inadequate stakeholder buy-in, difficulties in integrating Agile with traditional construction practices, and the need for skilled agile practitioners. Understanding these challenges can assist project managers and stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate potential obstacles. By synthesizing the existing literature, this research provides valuable insights into the implementation of Agile project management in the United States construction industry. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the benefits, challenges, and success factors associated with agile practices, enabling construction professionals to make informed decisions and adopt effective strategies when implementing agile methodologies in their projects. When Agile Harms Learning and Innovation: (and What Can Be Done About It)

Originally developed for software development, Agile approaches are increasingly adopted by organizations that seek flexibility in the face of rapid change. However, little attention has been paid to the potential negative consequences of the implementation of Agile in large-scale settings. This article presents the results of a multi-site study of a multinational telecom company over five years during its implementation of Agile practices in the context of large-scale software development. The article points to six potential pitfalls of implementing such practices that may negatively influence individual learning, ideation, and exploitation capabilities. It offers advice on how to avoid these consequences in large, established firms.

Principles and Practices of Agile Techniques in Automotive Product Operations

Agile approach and its practices are becoming more and more critical to many organisations in the face of accelerating global competitive pressure and customers' growing demands. While agility promises to bring values to business, organisations are facing a range of challenges in their agile transformation journey. This article aims to examine the principles and practices of Agile techniques in automotive product operations. The results find that Agile implementation helps automotive organisations increase customer satisfaction due to the more emphasis on customer preferences and frequent value delivery. Also, Agile promotes feedback loops, and continuous improvement across multi-layers within the organisation resulted in higher-quality automotive products. The implementation of Agile practices leading to higher productivity and efficiency in automotive operations is another finding. Agile approach and practices transform multifaceted aspects within the automotive organisation in terms of strategy, organizational structure, management methodology, processes, people, and technology, which resulted in the sweeping changes across the agile-based company. The final finding is that existing automotive organisations may face a wide range of challenges in their agile transformation journey. By contrast, it is easier for start-up companies as they begin with the blank page and do not need to obliterate anything.

Impact and Challenges of Requirement Engineering in Agile Methodologies: A Systematic Review

Requirement Engineering is one of important stage in development life cycle. All requirements required for development of product is collected in this phase. A high standard product can be developed by agile methodology in less budget and time. Importance of agile practices have been enhanced since it offers assist cooperation too software engineering. Being basic phase of software engineering, requirement engineering has different processes. The elements of direct correspondence is one of spry way which not at all like to other conventional and traditional approaches .Although a lot of research has been done on agile practices and role of requirement in agile methodologies but still there is need of studies on change manage management ,requirement prioritization, prototyping and nonfunctional requirement in agile methodologies. Aim of this review paper is to present the limitations in presentation of requirement engineering phases in agile practices and what are the issues and challenges that agile person faces in implementation of agile practices. Many research studies from different sources have been reviewed on basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Most RE activities has been discussed in review. Evidence helps to prove that how RE process was performed in scrums. Mostly research has been conducted on general agile methodologies, few authors specified RE practices in other methodologies of agile. Finding of this research is the work of researchers that will be beneficial for those who are interested in finding interesting area of research in this field because many techniques of agile (extreme programming, crystal methodology, lean ) requires further study and practical results as clarified by studies.

Influential Factors on the Awareness of Agile Software Development Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review

Agile software development methodology has been implemented by software industries over a decade ago and well accepted in the practitioner community. However, there is limited understanding on how agile practitioners aware towards implementation of agile practices in software development. Lack of awareness will lead to misunderstandings among agile practitioners and misuse the agile practices. In order to understand the awareness of agile practices, this paper aims to investigate the factors that affect awareness of agile practitioners in implementing agile practices. A systematic literature review (SLR)was conducted in order to classify and define the factors of awareness in agile software development methodology. The review was based on papers between 2002 and December 2014 from seven electronic databases. The relevant papers were included 20 journal articles, 24 conference papers,16 book chapters, 9 workshop papers. Consequently, 69 papers were identified that closely related with awareness in agile software development methodology. From the thematic analysis, 13 factors were classified from 42 elements. Based on the review result, understanding the influential factors on the awareness of agile practices will provide benefit to researchers and agile practitioners.

AbstractThe U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and its clients have historically used a structured, plan‐driven approach to provide continuity, direction, and control to large, multi‐year programs. Projects within these programs vary greatly in size, complexity, level of maturity, technical risk, and clarity.On a recent program one of our clients employed hierarchical requirements methodologies for technology development projects, with complex interfaces and tight project schedules, which necessitated frequent end‐to‐end product demonstrations throughout system development. In response PNNL embedded Agile engineering practices into the plan‐driven project life cycle to benefit from the Agile principle of delivering frequent, interim, and functioning products regularly throughout the project's period of performance.This paper describes the application of those Agile practices on a large command and control system development effort. It discusses how the project team benefitted from both the plan‐driven project execution and the rapid prototyping, integration, and client feedback made possible with the implementation of Agile practices. Furthermore, this paper discusses the tools and implementing mechanisms used to transition between each methodology.

Group Process Losses in Agile Software Development Decision Making

The importance of effective decision making in organisations has been well documented. Despite the many benefits associated with groupwork, groups are often subjected to process losses such as groupthink, which in turn have a negative impact on group decision making. Limited prior research has suggested that such process losses may be even more prevalent in agile software development characterised by highly cohesive, self-managing teams. This study is one of the first to rigorously investigate the group process losses most prevalent in agile software development teams and assesses how the implementation of agile practices can reduce the impact or occurrence of such losses.

Effective Implementation of Agile Practices - Ingenious and Organized Theoretical Framework

Delivering software in traditional ways is challenged by agile software development to provide a very different approach to software development.
