Visitor Perceptions on the Impacts of Tourism Activities, Development and Infrastructure on the Environment of Perhentian Islands

Tourism is one of the leading contributors to service industry in Malaysia and is gradually growing. The growth of this industry brings impact towards the environment, specifically islands. This study views into the tourists’ perception on the impact of tourism activities, development and infrastructure to the environment of Perhentian Islands. A total number of 258 questionnaires were distributed to tourists in Perhentian Islands which is a popular tourist island destination in Malaysia. The results indicate that there is a significant number of moderate and high level of agreement that tourism activities, development and infrastructure are effecting the island’s environment. It was also found that foreign tourist had significantly higher level of agreement for both variables than local tourist. However, it was found that there was no significant difference among gender for both variables. Establishing carrying capacity and embedding environmental education in sustainable tourism management would help broaden the perception of tourists.

The Evaluation of Tourism Festival Activities Impact on Water Environment in Dongping Forest Park Based on the Grey Relational Recognition Model

This paper takes Shanghai Chongming Dongping Forest Park as the studying area; and takes the water environment in park which has the most intensive tourism activities as the research objects; selects the grey relational recognition model to analyze the temporal variation of the water environment before and after the Dongping Forest Festival, and uses PCA ordination with the ecological software CANOCO to analyze the spatial variation of water quality, so as to evaluate the impact of human tourism activities on water environment in temporal and spatial scale. The results show that: (1) the impact of agglomeration effect during the tourism festival on water environment is very obvious; the large number of tourists greatly affects the water environment near the Farmhouse Restaurant during the festival, causing substantial change of all kinds of indexes of water quality, and short-term rapid deterioration of water quality; (2) It seems from the analysis on monitoring results that after a large number of tourism activities, the self-purification capacity of water has improved, the ecological recreation activities (such as artificial ship) can effectively reduce the impact of tourism activities on the environment; it should be advocated energetically in the development and management of tourism resources; (3) From the spatial variation analysis of water quality, main pollutants of each water area can be determined through PCA ordination, the waters show three groups of feature type distribution: Group 1 (Farmhouse Restaurant, Background2, Fishing area) shows that the content of COD and the pollutants of organic increased; Group 2 (Background1) shows that the content of TN and the pollutants of organic increased; Group 3 (Barbecue area, Cruise area, Around waterway, Viewing area ) shows that the content of TN increased but the TP decreased.

Estimating the direct and indirect water use of tourism in the eastern Mediterranean

The impact of tourism activities on local water resources remains a largely understudied issue in environmental and sustainable tourism management. The aim of the paper is to present a simple methodology that allows an estimate of direct and indirect local water use associated with different holiday packages and to then discuss relevant management implications. This is explored through the creation of five illustrative examples of holidays to semi-arid eastern Mediterranean destinations: Cyprus (2), Turkey, Greece and Syria. Using available data on water use associated with different forms of travel, accommodation and tourist activities, indicative water footprints are calculated for each of the illustrative examples. Food consumption by tourists appears to have by far the most significant impact on the overall water footprint and this aspect of water use is explored in detail in the paper. The paper also suggests a way of employing the water footprint methodology along with import/export balance sheets of main food commodities to distinguish between the global and local pressure of tourism demand on water resources. Water resource use is likely to become an increasingly important issue in tourism management and must be considered alongside more established environmental concerns such as energy use, using methodologies that can capture direct as well as supply chain impacts.

The Assessment of Human Activities Impact on Spatial Heterogeneity of Soil Environment - Taking DongPing Forest Park as an Example

Research of the impact of tourism activities on the soil has been a focus in domestic and foreign environmental impact research. Targeted at spatial heterogeneity that domestic and foreign soil environment impact research seldom touches, this paper took Dongping Forest Park on Shanghai Chongming Island as a sample land and made Chongming Forest Tourism Festival the major driving factor. Through comparative analysis of bulk density, organic matter of soil and soil available nutrient before and after the festival, the paper adopted PCA ranking to study the spatial distribution and law of heterogeneity of soil environment evolution in Dongping Forest Park under the impact of human tourism activities, and concluded that: (1) bulk density, organic matter, available nitrogen and available phosphorus showed regular changes, but the change of available potassium was not evidently regular. (2) As for the impact strength on large spatial scale, active area＞buffer area＞background area; and from the aspect of sample land scale, the sample lands of floating bridge and stage performances in the active area were under the greatest impact from tourists, while amusement park and tea house were not so strongly affected; the flower viewing2 sample land in buffer area was more affected than the flower viewing3 sample land; the background area was the least affected. (3) Bulk density, organic matter and available nitrogen in sample lands show regular changes in spatial heterogeneity, while the change of available phosphorus and available potassium was not regular enough. The impact of tourism activities on overall spatial heterogeneity of soil showed a homogeneity tendency.

Ecological Security Research of Shanghai Hangzhou Bay North Shore under the Impact of Tourism Activities

The ecological security of coastal area has been a focus in the research of coastal wetlands ecosystem. However, with the development of China’s coastal tourism, the research of coastal wetlands ecological security under the impact of tourism activities seems not updated enough. Therefore, this paper selected Fengxian and Jinshan District on Shanghai Hangzhou Bay North Shore, and made tourism activities the major driving factor for ecological security of tourism environment in coastal area, thus establishing an ecological security evaluation system of costal tourism environment, based on DPSIR Model. The result showed that tourism development would enhance the ecological security level of regional tourism environment, and tourism activities would exert positive impact on regional tourism environment. The conclusions include: (1) Before 2003, the tourism environment of Fengxian District was in an insecure state, but with tourism development, in 2007, its ecological security level was largely elevated; (2) The tourism ecological security of Jinshan District was higher than that of Fengxian District, but due to industrial development and tourism downturn, ecological security witnessed a trough in 2003.

Behavioural Responses of the Australian Fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) to Vessel Traffic and Presence of Swimmers in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia

A largely unregulated seal-swim industry exists in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia. This study has documented four fur seal behaviours in response to vessel traffic and presence of swimmers in order to determine the impact of tourism activities on Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus). Behavioural responses of fur seals to the presence of a total of 135 vessels (tour = 61 and recreational = 74) were collected on 42 research trips over the peak austral summer tourist period (November 2007 to February 2008). After considering all studied variables, vessel distance, the number of swimmers undertaking sealswim activities, and the number of recreational vessels were found to influence seal behaviour. Aggressive behaviour displays by fur seals were influenced by the presence of recreational vessels within close proximity to the study site (< 200 m); haul-out events initially increased as a result of the presence of swimmers undertaking seal-swim activities; and occurrences of fur seals entering the water increased in response to the distance of approaching tourism vessels to the study site. Statistical analyses found no clear indicator influencing the number of threat postures displayed by fur seals. While a weak linear relationship was identified between the indicators (i.e., presence of recreational vessels, presence of swimmers, and the distance of tour vessels) and the three behaviours displayed by fur seals, post hoc tests failed to achieve significantly different means for each of the indicators. This preliminary research into the impact of swim-with tourism upon A. pusillus doriferus will provide valuable baseline data for the future. The long-term research into the effects of this particular tourism industry on fur seal behaviour may ensure wildlife managers develop appropriate regulations for seal tourism interactions that promote a sustainable marine tourism industry within Port Phillip Bay.

A Brush up on Water Quality Studies of Port Dickson, Malaysia

Port Dickson is the only coastal district in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia which is a favourite weekend getaway for people from Malaysia as well as Singapore. Impacts of tourism activities, shipping, refineries, land reclaiming activities, coastal zone management construction and insufficient sewage water treatment are the most pressing environmental problems that have caused deterioration of water quality in Port Dickson. Thus, bearing in mind all the impacts towards water quality of Port Dickson, water quality studies related to Port Dickson are briefly reviewed. This is to provide an overall viewpoint of current situation of water quality status, identify and prioritize future studies and regulatory plans in Port Dickson. Extensive Port Dickson water quality studies were done from 1999 to 2002 so far, Port Dickson waters have been analyzed in terms of physico-chemical parameters, nutrients, organic carbon, microbiological and heavy metals to indicate environmental pollution. However, limited studies were available on heavy metal concentration in coastal waters of Port Dickson. After 2002, fewer studies were conducted in terms of water quality in Port Dickson. This review output showed that water quality related studies in Port Dickson are clearly needed to be increased and strategized in terms of research objectives. Looking into pollution factors in Port Dickson, accumulation of heavy metals in water, sediment and biomonitors studies are crucial at this point of time. Future studies on heavy metals are crucial to understand impacts of different ecological compartments from various anthropogenic sources. Future studies in Port Dickson should also give a focus in utilization of this resource in order fill in the knowledge gap and provide clear direction in sustainable development of this precious resource. Amid these findings, real extent of contamination in Port Dickson will give direction helpful recommendations on environmental management and pollution control in this area.

Spatial–temporal variations of travertine deposition rates and their controlling factors in Huanglong Ravine, China – A world’s heritage site

Abstract Huanglong, well known for its unique natural travertine landscape, was listed by UNESCO as an entry in the World’s Nature Heritage in 1992, and attracts more than one million of tourists from all over the world each year. However, the landscape has undergone significant degradation (notably, serious decay of travertine) during the past two decades as the tourist numbers have increased remarkably. To understand the variations of travertine deposition rates and their controlling factors, especially the impact of tourism activities, paired water and modern travertine samples deposited on plexiglass substrates were taken along the Huanglong stream at regular intervals from early May to early November in 2010 (i.e., in the wet season). The travertine deposition rates have declined significantly compared to those in early 90s in all four subsystems in the Huanglong Ravine. The largest decrease (89.5%) occurred at the lowest sampling site. The reduction in travertine deposition most likely resulted from the phosphate pollution caused by the tourism activities. In spite of an increase in concentrations of Ca, calcite saturation, and water temperature, which facilitate calcite precipitation, deposition rates decreased because of inhibition by PO 4 3 - ions. Seasonally, three control patterns of travertine deposition rates were distinguished along the Ravine. They are control by water-temperature, control by dilution of rainwater and snow-melting water and control by PO 4 -inhibition of calcite precipitation.

Study Of Marine Ecotourism Potency In Batubara Regency

Ecotouris m is nature-based tourism that involves education and concern on natural environment and ecological sustainability. Pandang Island area is 7 hectares, with potential natural resources that can be developed to be ecotourism destination. The island’s zonation and its surrounding waters have been established by considering natural condition, such as shore line, shore type, substrate, temperature, coral reefs and coral fish’s type. The first zone is allocated for conservation purpose especially for turtle nesting and coral reefs; the second zone is allocated for supporting and facilitates for tourism activities, and the last zone is buffer zone for preventing direct impact of tourism activities on the conservation zone (the first zone). Tourism activities recommended in the utilization zone are: diving, snorkeling, swimming, sport fishing, beach tracking, other beach sports, camping and other reasonable ecotourism activities.

Methodological Aspects of Preparing the German TSA, Empirical Findings and Initial Reactions

In 2003, the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS mbH) developed a tourism satellite account (TSA) for the Federal Republic of Germany relating to the year 2000. The TSA framework facilitates systematic measurement of the direct economic impact of tourism activities. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the German TSA calculation procedure. It explains how the data of tourism statistics can be consistently combined with the national accounts framework. In 2000, the gross value added of tourism activities of private households in Germany amounted to nearly €57.5 billion, corresponding to a share of 3.2% of the total gross value added. In the final part of the paper, some initial reactions and objections to the results are discussed.
