The Impact of Information Sharing and Inventory Management Practices on Firms’ Performance in Supply Chain Practices

This study’s aim is to conduct an empirical investigation of the impact of supply chain practices on firm performance. The prime objective of the paper is to study the impact of information-sharing practices and inventory management on firm performance. To realize the specified objective of the study, data were gathered from 170 individuals who are familiar with the supply chain practices of the companies and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The result shows a significant direct and indirect effect of information sharing and inventory management practices on firm performance. Generally, the results show that higher information-sharing practices and better inventory management practices lead to greater firm performance; and higher information-sharing leads to improved inventory management, which in turn leads to greater firm performance. Theoretically, the result provides evidence of the effects of information sharing and inventory management on the supply chain practices’ performance in a firm. The managerial implications of the results are enhancing information sharing and inventory management practices by adopting, internalizing, and building information technology into all the business operations to enhance information sharing and inventory management practices to enhance firm performance.

A Relationship between Supply Chain Practices, Environmental Sustainability and Financial Performance: Evidence from Manufacturing Companies in Jordan

Pursuing sustainable development creates competitiveness for manufacturing firms in the market, however the financial pressure of adopting sustainable environmental practices is still a major concern. Few studies were found on the inter-relationships between supply chain management practices, environmental sustainability, and firm financial performance. Moreover, manufacturing companies are compelled by different pressure groups across the globe to maintain environmental standards while conducting their business and supply chain activities. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the impact of supply chain practices on environmental sustainability and financial performance. In addition, the role of environmental sustainability as a mediator between supply chain management and financial performance was analyzed to improve sustainable development. A well-designed questionnaire was administered to manufacturing companies in Jordan for data collection. A total of 376 responses were analyzed and the proposed hypotheses were tested by using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach. The results reveal that environmental sustainability was tested significantly and influenced by supply chain practices such as relationship with customers, postponement, level of information sharing, and information quality. Whereas environmental sustainability had a significant direct effect on financial performance. Finally, environmental sustainability mediated the relationship of all supply chain management practices with financial performance except strategic supplier partnership dimension. The study provides policy guidelines to decision makers while simultaneously assists the managers to improve sustainability practices in manufacturing companies.

The role of company competitiveness as mediation variable the impact of supply chain practices on operational performance

This study aimed to explain the role of supply chain practices on operational performance, and supply chain practices on company competitiveness and to analyze the impact of company competitiveness on operational performance. In addition, we also investigate the impact of supply chain practices on operational performance through role of company competitiveness as mediation variable. The study was conducted in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Primary data were collected by questionnaire instrument from 108 food and beverage companies. Method of analysis was both descriptive statistical analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The study also used Sobel test to determine significance level of mediation role in the model. The results show that supply chain practices could give a positive impact on operational performance. Supply chain practices also gave a positive impact and significant on company competitiveness. Then, company competitiveness had a positive impact and significant on operational performance. Additionally, supply chain practices also had a positive impact on operational performance indirectly through the role of company competitiveness as mediation variable. Hence, supply chain practice was the most important variable to increase both company competitiveness and operational performance. Each company is recommended to implement this variable as competitive weapon in order to get a better operational performance and competitiveness as well.

This study was conducted through an online based questionnaire. Data were collected from 283 manufacturing companies that presented different industrial sectors in Egypt. The data was analysed using partial least squares technique. The results indicated that strategic supplier partnership, customer relationship practices and information sharing are the three SCMPs which positively affect supply chain flexibility. Moreover, the supply chain risk management culture positively moderated the impact of strategic supplier partnership, customer relationship practices and information sharing on supply chain flexibility.

Impact of Supply Chain Practices on Competitive Advantage: Evidence from Ethiopian Brewery Industry

Supply chain (SC) rehearses assume a significant role for getting a competitive position in worldwide environment. This research study intends to explore the impact of SC practices/rehearses on the competitive advantage (CA) on account of the Brewery Industry in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Data for investigation were collected through field survey through questionnaire based on five-point Likert scale from 119 respondents from one industry. Current study employed the variance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis by utilizing Smart-Partial least squares (PLS) 3.0 software for data analysis. The results showed that SCM practices have significant impact on competitive advantage. The results show that customer relationship and strategic supplier partnership are significantly and positively related to competitive advantage of the manufacturer but not relationship between information sharing and competitive advantage. The findings of the current study give experiences into mangers with respect to how to expand the SC rehearses for getting additional advantages. The outcome of this study analysis adds to the literature on SC practices by breaking down the impact of association between customer/client relationship, information/data sharing, and strategic supplier partnership on the CA towards a firm capacity in a particular Ethiopian Brewery Industry context.

The impact of supply chain practices and quality management on firm performance: Evidence from China's small and medium manufacturing enterprises

In China, small and medium enterprises (SME) contribute to more than 75% of urban employment opportunities and more than 50% national fiscal revenue. This study uses survey data from 138 small and medium firms in China to explore the impact of supply chain practices and quality management on firm business performances. Business performances include market share performance and innovation performance. The analysis results show that (1) supply chain information sharing has significant positive impact on quality management practices and supplier specific investment; and (2) quality management practices and supplier specific investment have significant positive impact on both market share performance and innovation performance. This study also finds that not only the market share performance and innovation performance but also the level of quality management practice and supplier's specific investment are higher at the coastal Zhejiang province than seven inland provinces. Regarding the supplier specific investment, firms facing severe intense competition tend not to invest as much as those facing fair level of competition. For the firms with different levels of supplier specific investment (i.e. low, and high), this study finds no difference in quality management practice, supply chain information sharing, and business performances. Finally, innovation performance is found to be positively correlated with market share performance. Hopefully, this study reveals the factors how the sample firms achieved sustained success as the average number of years the sample firms existed was 17.5 years which is much longer than the 3.7 years average life cycle of Chinese SMEs.

How do suppliers address stringent environmental requirements from buyers? An exploratory study in the Bangladesh ready-made garment industry

PurposeStakeholders such as customers, governments and environmental organisations are more concerned than ever about the impact of supply chain practices on the environment, leading firms to introduce environmental requirements into their supply contracts. While the extant literature on supply chains acknowledges this trend, it fails to inform comprehensively on the concept of “stringent environmental requirement” and its consequences. The purpose of this paper is to investigate this concept and explore how such requirements may translate into supplier environmental performance.Design/methodology/approachQualitative methodology was adopted by the study and data were collected through conducting eight case studies in the Bangladesh ready-made garment (RMG) industry.FindingsA number of factors were found to be influencing suppliers’ perception of stringency, such as uncertainty relating to the newness and deadline of buyers’ environmental requirements, the complexity of implementing the requirements, and the use of buyer-specific frameworks. The research also shows that suppliers’ efforts in building environmental capability play a vital role in dealing with stringent environmental requirements.Research limitations/implicationsThe case studies are limited to the Bangladesh RMG industry. Given that environmental regulations vary across different countries and industries, the data may not reflect all the possible variations in stringent environmental requirements.Practical implicationsThe new insight proposed by this research can guide firms to further understand how supplier environmental performance and the sustainability of their supply chain can be achieved. The research provides broad insight into how suppliers can address stringent environmental requirements and improve their environmental performance.Originality/valueThis research establishes evidence for the relatively new phenomenon of “stringent environmental requirements”, and develops a theoretical framework to demonstrate the relationships among the critical determinants relevant to this phenomenon.

TQM, SCM and operational performance: an empirical study of Indian pharmaceutical industry

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of total quality management (TQM) and supply chain management (SCM) practices on operational performance, and their interlinkage between each other.Design/methodology/approachConstructs those are critical to pharmaceutical quality and supply chain have been identified with the help of literature and experts from industry. The impact of TQM practices on supply chain practices and on operational performance has been evaluated. Similarly, the impact of supply chain practices on operational performance has been evaluated. Further, alternate models are tested and evaluated through structural equation modeling.FindingsIt was observed during testing of alternate models that TQM practices have a direct impact on operational performance. However, TQM practices also directly impact supply chain components, which, in turn, influence overall operational performance. In comparison of alternate models, the model in which TQM practices affect supply chain practices and supply chain practices further affect the operational performance is found most appropriate.Practical implicationsThis study provides some useful implications from industry point of view. TQM practices are critical to pharmaceutical industry. TQM practices are the core of attaining a smooth supply chain, which will have greater impact to achieve operational performance. Strategic supplier partnership, procurement management, information sharing, and quality and inventory management practices are driven by TQM practices. This tri-linkage helps to achieve the desired operational performance.Originality/valueThere are very limited studies that have considered both the areas together to achieve better operational performance. In pharmaceutical industry, both TQM and SCM are the critical areas for any organization to drive its growth.

Investigating and analyzing the supply chain practices and performance in agro-food industry

ABSTRACTThe goal of this study is to empirically examine the potential impact of supply chain practices on the supply chain performances of the agro-food industry. The constructs of interest are three-dimensional, including supplier partnerships, customer relationships and level and quality of information sharing, thus representing supply chain practices, flexibility, agility and innovation as the main characteristics of supply chain performance. To gain better understanding of the possible impact of the supply chain practices on the supply chain performances of the agro-food industry we use structural equation modelling. The analysis has revealed statistically significant positive impact of customers’ relationships as well as statistically significant negative impact of a supplier partnership on the supply chain performance. From a theoretical point of view, this study has indicated contribution of different supply chain practices on supply chain performances. The results obtained from this study provide practical implications that assist managers in improving supply chain performance and highlight limitations for implementation of supply chain practice for the improvement of business operations.

Achieving triple bottom line sustainability in supply chains

PurposeCompanies are increasingly challenged by sustainability-related supply chain risks. Research has developed linking supply chain sustainability priorities, practices and triple bottom line performance; however, risk is rarely included in these models. The purpose of this paper is to understand the link between sustainable supply chain strategies, practices and performance, and to test the importance of risk management practices in this relationship focusing on the product category level.Design/methodology/approachThe paper includes a survey of supply managers in four countries with 305 responses, with a focus on upstream supply chain strategies at the product category level.FindingsThe environmental and social sustainability strategies lead to sustainable supply sustainable performance, through focused practices in either area, but the effect on operational and cost performance is not significant. Social supply chain strategies positively impact environmental and cost performance when mediated by risk assessment practices.Originality/valueThis paper shows a more nuanced view of the impact of supply chain practices on the strategy–performance link. It is one of the first papers to empirically test the role of risk practices in sustainable supply chain management and emphasize the importance of alignment across the main dimensions of sustainability to achieve positive sustainable performance outcomes, but not necessarily cost and operational performance. Unlike other studies, social sustainability priorities may positively impact environmental and social performance and is linked to cost advantage when implemented with risk assessment practices.

An empirical study on supply chain practices and their effect on financial performance: a case from Egypt

Managing supply chain is a challenge for enterprises to sustain the competitiveness that reflected in their bottom-line financial figures. This research aims at exploring the impact of supply chain practices on the financial performance of different manufacturing companies in the Egyptian market. Qualitative and quantitative approaches have been followed to use theories and literature to cover the supply chain to test it empirically. Research data was collected from 98 managers who are representing 14 manufacturers, which are registered in Egypt's Stock market between 2005-2010. The secondary data on financial performance of the participated companies were obtained from official publications. Findings indicate a strong relationship between supply chain practices and bottom-line profits of an organisation. Supply chain managers decrease the use of large fixed assets in the supply chain. Results yield useful insights to both academics, and corporate practitioners about the importance of synthesising supply chain with financial performance.
