The current treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) involves the use of thrombolytic therapy and, in selected cases, invasive cardiology techniques. l Published therapeutic trials involve highly selected groups. It is therefore important to determine the impact of new therapies on a population-wide basis. We report the results of a study of all AMIs recorded for the Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease (MONICA project) in the French region of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, Southwestern France) from 1985 to 1990. In this study, we examined trends in AM1 frequency and prognosis from 1985 to 1990. We also compared treatment among hospitalized patients during the same period. This study allowed us to assess the practices of effective therapies in randomized trials on a population-wide basis.2 METHODS
