The National Service Framework for Long-Term Conditions states that people with long-term neurological conditions are to receive a comprehensive range of palliative care services when they need them. It has been estimated that around 300?000 people with neurological conditions in the UK have unmet palliative care needs. Parkinson's disease is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases and patients could benefit from palliative care to help control symptoms at an early stage in the disease. For this to happen a more effective interface must be developed between specialist neurological, palliative care and primary healthcare teams. More research is needed to determine trigger points when palliative care input is needed for patients with neurodegenerative disease, as well as better coordination of health and social care services. None of this will be achievable unless there is significant additional investment in specialist palliative care and primary care services.
