Impact of Industrial Estate Development on Infrastructure Sustainability in the Wijayakusuma Industrial Area, Semarang

The trend of urbanization forms a sustainable urban urgency through the planning of land use and infrastructure. In fulfilling urban productivity, these plans are often fragmented. This phenomenon occurs surrounding the Wijayakusuma Industrial Area, Semarang City. As a generator/vibrant of the economy and surrounding area, industry coexists with uncontrolled and non-standard infrastructure. The research aims to analyze the impact of industrial development on the infrastructure sustainability within and surrounding the Wijayakusuma Industrial Area. The study used a qualitative approach with mapping techniques, document review, and in-depth interviews that were analyzed descriptively and spatially. The results show that the attractiveness and economic potential of the industry have a strong impact on increasing infrastructure needs. However, the authority for independent infrastructure planning has resulted in the industry only focusing on internal but has not considered the impact/system unity of the surrounding infrastructure, like slums, not-interconnected, and non-standard infrastructure so it is not sustainable. The novelty is an infrastructure impact solution considering vibrant concepts in industrial strategic areas, through the concept of handling existing infrastructure, alternative infrastructure provision, especially livable and sustainable housing for workers, increasing access through TOD/neighborhood units, also physical planning and control policies.

REMOTE WORK POLICIES: REDEFINING HR PRACTICES FOR THE DIGITAL ERA

This study investigates the impact of remote work policies and technological infrastructure on employee engagement and productivity at PT. Citra Mandiri Jaya Makmur. Using a quantitative approach with data collected from 75 employees, the research employs Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Smart PLS software to analyze the relationships between remote work implementation, technological infrastructure, employee engagement, and productivity. The results reveal significant direct effects of remote work implementation and technological infrastructure on both employee engagement and productivity, as well as a significant indirect effect of remote work implementation on productivity mediated by employee engagement. However, the indirect effect of technological infrastructure on productivity through employee engagement is found to be not significant. These findings highlight the critical role of effective remote work policies in enhancing employee engagement and productivity, while also suggesting the need for further exploration into the mechanisms underlying the relationship between technological infrastructure, employee engagement, and productivity. Overall, the study provides valuable insights for organizations seeking to optimize remote work strategies and technological investments to drive employee engagement and productivity in the digital era.

The impact of human resource management, learning, and academic infrastructure in pre-service teachers on pedagogical competence: A multifaceted analysis

This study investigated the influence of the learning process, human resources, and infrastructure on the pre-service teachers' competencies, particularly their pedagogical competence as future professional teachers. This study employed survey research, a type of quantitative investigation. The study's population consisted of all 182 Pre-Service Teachers from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Department, Mathematics, and English Education Department of the Teacher Professional Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Islam Malang. Primary and secondary data were the two data types used in this investigation: questionnaires and documentation. The main source of information was the assessment of the lecture process in Batches 1 and 2 of the Pre-Service Teacher of Teacher Professional Education Program. The course grades from LMS courses taken by pre-service PPG students made up the secondary data. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that the learning process and human resources positively influenced the pre-service teacher's competence, especially in the pre-service teacher professional education program. Meanwhile, the data showed that academic infrastructure did not impact pre-service teacher competence.

Influencing Factors of SME Export Performance: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Utilizing B2B Cross-Border E-Commerce Platforms

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence the export performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It primarily seeks to elucidate the mediating role played by business-to-business (B2B) cross-border e-commerce (CBEC). Design/Methodology – Following prior scholarly investigations, measurement factors influencing the export performance of SMEs through B2B CBEC were identified. Hypothesis testing was executed by structural equation modeling using Smart PLS 4.0 statistical software. Findings – This investigation demonstrated that the information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure and collaborative partnerships within supply chain management (SCM) significantly influence the export performance of SMEs. Furthermore, B2B CBEC was examined in terms of scalability, compatibility, and usability. As a result, it was found to play a mediating role in the impact of ICT infrastructure and SCM partnerships on export performance. Originality/value – This research highlights the crucial role of various factors in the establishment of a CBEC platform by SMEs. Specifically, the study emphasizes the importance of ICT infrastructures and SCM partnerships as pivotal elements affecting the export performance of SMEs. Furthermore, this study investigates the interplay between CBEC platforms and the influence of ICT infrastructure and SCM partnerships on SMEs’ export performance, with particular focus on factors such as scalability, compatibility, and usability. It underscores the capability of these platforms to effectively address challenges related to language barriers, ICT, order management, and logistics. Consequently, SMEs can attain efficient transaction performance without necessitating substantial additional resource investment.

Mitigating urban heat and air pollution considering green and transportation infrastructure

Global urbanization is causing an increase in population and transportation along with a reduction of green spaces. This phenomenon is leading to the development of Urban Heat Island (UHI) and Urban Pollution Island (UPI) effects, negatively impacting the urban environment. Numerous mitigation strategies have been proposed to reduce heat and air pollution. However, the combined impact of green and transportation infrastructure and their potential to mitigate heat and air pollution remains partially understood. This review aims to contribute by systematically investigating studies on mitigation strategies for urban green and transportation infrastructure from 2003 to 2023. These strategies are classified into two types: green infrastructure-related (greenery, green roofs, and green walls) and transportation-related (transportation fuel, transportation networks, and transportation organization systems). The findings are presented under five aspects: (1) Most research on transportation infrastructure adopts qualitative research methods, whereas research on green infrastructure tends to adopt quantitative methods; (2) Developed countries prioritize upgrading their transportation fuel, while developing countries remain inclined towards developing urban green spaces; (3) In subtropical and temperate zones, green roofs and green walls may cool the local ambient (within 1 m above the surface) by up to 10℃, whereas the cooling effect in other climate zones is within 5℃; (4) More focus was put on reducing the surface temperature rather than the air temperature. Green roofs and green walls are found to cool the former 2–3 times more than the latter; (5) Green infrastructure in the subtropical zone is 1.2 to 2 times more effective at adsorbing gaseous pollutants than in the temperate zone. This review can assist policymakers, urban planners and researchers in effectively mitigating urban heat and air pollution, and guide future research endeavors.

Infrastructure and economic growth in ECOWAS member states: The Westerlund co-integration approach

This research explores the impact of infrastructure on member states' economic growth in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Utilizing panel secondary data sourced from the World Bank Development Indicators (WDI) and the African Infrastructure Development Index (AIDI) across all fifteen ECOWAS Member States over eighteen years, the study employs the panel Non-linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model and the Westerlund co-integration test for analysis. The findings reveal that investments in infrastructure, improvements in the African Development Index, and enhancements in the Electricity Composite Index significantly contribute to the economic growth of ECOWAS countries. Specifically, infrastructure investment is associated with a 0.01 per cent increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the ECOWAS countries studied. In comparison, the African Development Index and the Electricity Composite Index are linked to increases in GDP by 0.292 per cent and 0.987 per cent, respectively, in the long term. Based on these outcomes, the study recommends that ECOWAS country authorities enhance policies to optimize government spending on infrastructure quality. Furthermore, adopting quality-enhancing and efficiency-driven financing policies in infrastructure is advocated to complement ECOWAS's ongoing infrastructural development efforts. The realization of these recommendations hinges on the availability of accurate data for informing decisions and guiding policymakers. Hence, the study underscores the need for the ECOWAS Commission to bolster its capacity for collecting reliable data on infrastructure variables and other indicators. It also proposes that future research should focus on promoting sub-regional peer-review mechanisms for infrastructure indicators among member states and establishing structures to fortify infrastructure in West Africa.

An analysis of the impact and mechanism of new digital infrastructures on travel consumption behaviours of middle-aged and elderly households in China

ABSTRACT The significant integration of the ‘internet’ with ‘tourism’ has changed visitor travel motivations and customer behaviour. New digital infrastructure currently provides substantial technical support for deep integration between ‘the internet’ and ‘tourism’. In this work, the HLM model is used to match and merge household-level microdata with regional-level data. The goal is to identify the mechanism underlying the impact of China’s new digital infrastructure on the travel consumption habits of Chinese households. Our analysis shows that: (1) Middle-aged and older households will be much more likely to travel, and their travel expenses will also be more intense, as the intensity of new digital infrastructure increases. (2) The development in the degree of new digital Infrastructure will effect the tourism spending behaviour of middle-aged and senior people by boosting their Internet usage.

Gendered migration infrastructure and socio-spatial rupture: Indian women’s migration experiences to the United Arab Emirates

ABSTRACT Increasing cross-border mobilities for employment and livelihood opportunities has resulted in greater institutional and regulatory controls over migration. In this paper, through an analysis of the migration infrastructure for women between India and the United Arab Emirates, socio-spatial ruptures are discerned. The paper asserts that in addition to economic and political frameworks, social and cultural mores have been significant in shaping differentiated migration pathways for Indian women, which are conceptualised as, “gendered migration infrastructure”. Gendered migration infrastructure for Indian women is founded on normative understandings of domesticity and femininity and consequently, has made migration for women restrictive, circuitous and cumbersome. The failure and interruptions of migration infrastructure has occurred across borders and the differentiated migration pathways thus created lie at the intersection of formal regulations and actors (migration laws, recruitment and skilling organisations, state agents, border controls, civil society and bureaucracy) and informal intermediaries and practices (subagents, bypassing emigration procedures, irregular channels and corruption). By drawing on the narratives of Indian migrant women, the paper highlights the negotiations undertaken by migrant women and the impact of gendered migration infrastructure on their (im)mobilities, migratory experiences, and outcomes. Further, socio-spatial ruptures due to the COVID-19 pandemic created cracks in the migration infrastructure, deepening the precarities faced by migrant women. Overall, the paper aims to contribute to the literature on gendered migration and transnationalism in addition to shedding light on the migration of Indian women across income and legal categories, an under-researched topic currently.

Transportation infrastructure upgrading and green development efficiency: Empirical analysis with double machine learning method

In order to deal with the environmental problems such as pollution emissions and climate change, sustainable development in the field of transportation has gradually become a hot topic to all sectors of society. In addition, promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of China's transportation is also an important issue in the new era. Thus, it is particularly important to correctly identify the green effect of high-speed rail. However, the traditional causal reasoning model faces several challenges such as ‘dimensional curse’ and multicollinearity. Based on the panel data of 283 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2019, this study uses the double machine learning model to explore the impact of transportation infrastructure upgrading on the efficiency of urban green development in China. The research shows that the upgrading of transportation infrastructure can effectively improve the efficiency of urban green development by 4%. Service industry agglomeration and green innovation are verified as two mediating channels. Moreover, the synthetic difference in difference model is employed to evaluate the regional impact of high-speed rail, and finds that the regional impact of transportation policies often exceeds the impact of individual cities. We further apply the conclusions of this paper to the research at the micro enterprise level. Goodman-Bacon decomposition and a variety of robustness tests confirm the validity of our conclusions. The study's comprehensive empirical analysis not only validates the positive effects of transportation upgrades on green development, but also offers novel insights into the underlying mechanisms and policy implications of transportation upgrading.

Transport and Electricity Infrastructures and Economic Growth and Development in Selected Sub-Saharan African Countries

Economic postulations suggest that the interrelationship between changes in incomes, capital and labour which can be substituted into macroeconomic neoclassical and steady-state growth theories drives economic development. Arising from the above economic axiom, this study investigated the impact of transport and electricity infrastructures on economic development and growth in sub-Saharan Africa. The study used panel data from fifteen (15) sub-Saharan African countries. Panel data were obtained from statistical bulletins of the various countries and World Bank Indicators (WBI) from 2000-2022. Data obtained were analyzed via descriptive, diagnostic and inferential statistics. Specifically, the fixed and random effects regression revealed that while there is a significant relationship between transportation and electricity infrastructures and economic growth, an insignificant relationship was found between transportation and electricity infrastructures and economic development in the selected sub-Saharan African countries. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that governments in sub-Saharan Africa needs to increase their contributions and support for electricity and transportation infrastructures; this can be done by increasing budgetary allocation for critical infrastructures in countries of sub-Saharan Africa

This study investigates the social and economic implications of the Yamuna Expressway in Indias Aligarh-Jewar region. Through the utilization of a combination of methods, the research examines the impact of this extensive infrastructure project on local job opportunities, trends in urban growth, and alterations in peoples means of living. The highway has greatly decreased commute times and has facilitated economic and social changes throughout the area. The results indicate that despite significant economic growth and infrastructure improvements, issues like environmental damage and social inequities also emerge. This study adds to the knowledge of how transport infrastructure affects regional development, providing important information for decision-makers and those involved in similar projects. It also examines the role of policy in managing these outcomes, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and inclusive growth strategies. Setting up a CFD model to evaluate the impact of green infrastructures on local air quality

AbstractGreen infrastructures have been pointed out as innovative solutions to deal with current and future challenges related to air pollution and climate change. Although the potential of green infrastructures, such as green walls and green roofs, to mitigate air pollution has been documented, evidence at a local scale is still limited. This work aims to increase knowledge about the potentialities of green infrastructures in improving local air quality, focusing on particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone pollutants, and by using a local-scale computational fluid dynamics model. The ENVI-met model was applied to a particular hour of a summer day over a built-up environment centred on a main avenue in the city of Lisbon (Portugal). The dimensions of the computational domain are 618 m × 594 m × 143 m, and it contains 184 buildings, with the tallest building being 56 m. In addition to the baseline simulation, modelling was also done considering the application of green walls and green roofs to specific buildings located near the main avenue, together with a green corridor. The overall results show no disturbances exerted by green walls on the turbulent flow dynamics and on the air quality levels when compared to the baseline scenario (without green walls). The integrated scenario, which includes green walls, green roofs and a green corridor, will lead to potential local benefits of green infrastructures on O3 concentrations, followed by variable impacts on NO2 and particulate matter concentrations.

Study on the Railway Effect of the Coordinated Development of the Economy and Environment in the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle

Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in economic development and significantly influences climate change, providing direct and indirect benefits towards the attainment of Goals 8 and 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study investigates the impact of railway infrastructure on the level of economic and environmental coordination development in the Chengdu–Chongqing economic circle, using panel data from 16 cities spanning from 2010 to 2020. The analysis employs a coupled coordination degree model and a panel fixed effects model. The findings reveal a gradual increase in the level of economic and environmental coordination development in each city during the study period. Notably, Chongqing and Chengdu exhibit significantly higher levels compared to other cities. Railway infrastructure construction can significantly promote the coordinated development of the urban economy and environment. In areas with a high level of coordinated development of the economy and environment, the promoting effect is relatively small, while in areas with a low level of coordinated development of the economy and environment, the promoting effect is relatively large. Over the long term, railways continue to significantly promote the coordinated development of the urban economy and environment. The construction of railways can stimulate the development of the urban private economy and marketization, thereby facilitating the coordinated development of the urban economy and environment.

How does ski infrastructure change soil erosion processes on hillslope?

AbstractSki tourism's popularity is driving a rise in the number of ski resorts. This study aims to present the impact of ski infrastructure on soil erosion processes in the example from a small catchment in the Gubałowskie Foothills in southern Poland, where landscape changes before (since 1879) and after the construction of the ski station (2007) are presented. The analyses of changes in flow accumulation, slope morphometry, and drainage ditches were conducted in the test area. Quantitative analyses were performed using repeated DEMs derived from aerial LiDAR survey and detailed geodetic measurements, complemented by geomorphological mapping done in the field. The study has revealed that the ski infrastructure has not only directly transformed the hillslope by flattening and constructing escarpments (up to 3 m high) but has also created alternating patterns of erosion and accumulation. In the test area, the drainage ditch was poorly designed. It was filled with materials (0.1–0.5 m), and two new outlets formed. The escarpment of the analyzed ski run has been diminished by 0.5 m. An alluvial fan (0.1–0.22 m thick) has developed on the flattened surface below the escarpment with drainage ditch outlets. This fan is eroded by subsurface flow that creates a piping system. The gully below the alluvial fan has retreated upslope, accelerated by subsurface erosion. This study enables the presentation of hillslope adjustments and processes in response to the new conditions caused by ski infrastructure. Such results may support more effective land management in regions changed by ski infrastructure.

Planned expansion of transportation infrastructure in Brazil has implications for the pattern of agricultural production and carbon emissions

High transportation costs have been a barrier to the expansion of agriculture in the interior of Brazil. To reduce transportation costs, Brazil launched the National Logistics Plan, aiming to expand its railway network by up to 91 % by 2035. Such a large-scale infrastructure investment raises concerns about its economic and environmental consequences. By combining geospatial estimation of transportation cost with a grid-resolving, multi-scale economic model that bridges fine-scale crop production with its trade and demand from national and global perspectives, we explore impacts of transportation infrastructure expansion on agricultural production, land use changes, and carbon emissions both locally and nationally in Brazil. We find that globally, the impacts on output and land use changes are small. However, within Brazil, the plan's primary impacts are impressive. PNL2035 results in the reduction of transportation costs by 8–23 % across states (depending on expansion's extent) in the interior Cerrado biome. This results in cropland expansion and increases in terrestrial carbon emissions in the Cerrado region. However, the increase in terrestrial carbon emissions in the Cerrado is offset by spillover effects elsewhere in Brazil, as crop production shifts away from the Southeast-South regions and accompanying change in the mix of transportation mode for farm products from roadway to more emission-efficient railway. Furthermore, we argue that the transportation infrastructure's impact on the enhanced mobility of labor and other agricultural inputs would further accentuate the regional shift in agricultural production and contribute to carbon emission mitigation. Upon its completion, PNL2035 is expected to result in the reduction of net national emissions by 1.8–30.7 million metric ton of CO2-equivalent, depending on the impacts on labor and purchased input mobility. We conclude that the omission of spillover effects due to infrastructure expansion can lead to misleading assessments of transport policies.

Transportation infrastructure and carbon emissions: New evidence with spatial spillover and endogeneity

Over the past two decades, China’s transportation infrastructure has expanded and emerged as a vital pillar of the national economy. In the context of commitments to carbon neutrality, it is imperative to assess how developing transportation infrastructure affects overall environmental goals. However, to the best of our knowledge, existing literature offers conflicting evidence about the overall impact of transportation infrastructure on carbon emissions. Using a novel spatial stochastic frontier model that accounts for spatial spillover and endogeneity, we find that previous research paradigms underestimated the contribution of transportation infrastructure to decarbonization: Instead of being a hindrance, the corrected effect substantially enhances decarbonization. These results remain robust in different weight matrices, instrumental variables, and distance function specifications. Furthermore, this study identifies economic agglomeration and technological innovation as key mechanisms of the decarbonization effect. From a regional perspective, we observe that western China shows the most pronounced emission reduction effect, followed by central China. In contrast, in eastern China, the transportation infrastructure does not support carbon emission reduction effectively. Therefore, policymakers should carefully consider the regional disparities in decarbonization and formulate distinct investment plans on transportation tailored to each region.

Renewable fuel production and the impact of hydrogen infrastructure — A case study of the Nordics

Hard-to-electrify sectors will require renewable fuels to facilitate the green transition in the future. Therefore, it is crucial to identify promising production locations while taking into account the local biomass resources, variable renewable energy sources, and the synergies between sectors. In this study, investments and dispatch operations are optimised of a large catalogue of renewable fuel production technologies in the open-source software SpineOpt, and this is soft-linked to the comprehensive energy system model Balmorel. We analyse future production pathways by comparing various levels of hydrogen infrastructure, including large-scale hydrogen storage, and assess system impacts. The results indicate that methanol may provide synergies in its multipurpose use as an early (2030–2040) shipping fuel and later as an aviation fuel through further refining if ammonia becomes more competitive (2050). We furthermore show that a hydrogen infrastructure increases the competitiveness of non-flexible, hydrogen-based fuel production technologies. Offshore electrolysis hubs decrease energy system impacts in scenarios with 105 TWh of Nordic hydrogen export. However, hydrogen export scenarios are much costlier compared to scenarios with no export unless a high hydrogen price is received. Finally, we find that emission taxes in the range of 250–265 €/tCO2 will be necessary for renewable fuels to become competitive.

Infrastructure Impact Assessment through Multi-Hazard Analysis at Different Scales: The 26 November 2022 Flood Event on the Island of Ischia and Debris Management

A multi-hazard analysis (seismic, landslide, flood) is conducted to verify the impact on the road network. The ENEA CIPCast platform is an innovative Decision Support System (DSS) that is used to implement the analyses using GIS. Using analytical and geoprocessing tools, the hazards were assessed and mapped. The overlapping of different geospatial layers allowed the implementation of a specific hazard map for the road network. Multi-hazard values were obtained using an appropriate matrix of single values, which were classified, and then summarized into four classes of values. The analyses were conducted at the regional (Campania region), provincial (Metropolitan City of Naples), and local scales (island of Ischia and municipality of Casamicciola Terme). In particular, the landslide event that struck Ischia island on 26 November 2022 and the municipality of Casamicciola Terme was considered as a case study to determine the impact on the road network, infrastructures, buildings, and jeopardizing inter-municipal connections. The results are mainly visualized through map processing and statistical summaries of the data. The management of the landslide debris, which can contain a multitude of fractions (waste, biomass and vegetation, sludge, soil, and rocks transported downstream by water), was also explored. This is a frontier issue for which international manuals and guidelines, as well as national and emergency acts, have been examined. A specific protocol for the sustainable management of the debris generated by floods and landslides is needed, and discussed in the present paper, to overcome emergencies after catastrophic events.
