Impact of industrial effluents on buringanga river and its tributaries

Many rivers throughout Bangladesh are now under threat due to both human-made and natural causes. In this context, we describe the Buriganga river system, its uses of the river, its level of pollution, and its sources of pollution. The present condition of the Buriganga water and its surrounding areas soils and plants might not be suitable for fisheries and irrigation; it has been observed that sampling points of 9,10,11 were highly polluted, with sampling point 7 with the highest water pH value (7.19), in sampling point 11 EC value was found (799 μS/cm) with other physicochemical parameters and Fe, Cd, Cr and Zn content in plant and soil samples were comparatively high at sampling point 9 and 11. In the studied area, the correlation coefficient of heavy metal content among soil and water, the Cr concentration (0.0289mg/l), was highly significant; it has been indicated that heavy metals were uptake by soil. Heavy metal toxicity arising from the industrial effluents repercussions on oxidative stress, liver enzymes and antioxidant activity in brain homogenates of Oreochromis niloticus

Industrial effluents reaching to the aquatic ecosystem is one of the major causes of environmental pollution and exposure to industrial effluents containing harmful substances may be a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the sub-lethal (1/5th of predetermined LC50) impact of industrial effluents from Sundar Industrial Estate on Oreochromis niloticus with proper negative control. The physicochemical analysis of industrial effluents showed enormous loads of inorganic pollutants and exhibited high mean levels of heavy metals, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cr, Hg, As, Zn and Fe with statistically significant differences at p < 0.05. Highest level of Mn and Fe was detected in effluent’s samples as 147.36 ± 80.91 mg/L and 90.52 ± 32.08 mg/L, respectively. Exposure led to increase in serum biochemical parameters alanine aminotransferase + 25%, aspartate aminotransferase + 20% and alkaline phosphatase + 7% over control although superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione significantly increased as 3.42, 2.44, 4.8 and 8 folds, respectively in metabolically active tissue brain which indicated stress caused by industrial effluents. The results concluded that industrial effluent has potent oxidative stress inducers on one hand whereas histoarchitectural and physiological toxicity causing contaminants on the other. This condition may adversely affect the health of aquatic organisms, the fish and ultimately the human beings.

Impact of Industrial Effluent on Physico-Chemical Properties of Soil in Unnao District of Uttar Pradesh, India

A study was carried out during 2021-22 considering various vegetable growing farmers in Unnao District (U.P.) to find out the effect of using industrial effluents as the only source of irrigation to their crops. 250 surface soil samples collected from farmer’s field were analyzed for physical as well as chemical parameters. The physical properties of soils improved due to industrial effluent irrigation. Among the physical properties bulk density ranged from 1.15 to 1.55 Mg m-3 and particle density ranged between 2.61 to 2.86 Mg m-3. Chemical Parameters of soil such as pH , EC, OC, Available N, P &amp;K were also analyzed and the results indicated that soils had a mean pH of 8.1, E.C. of 1.25 dSm-1, O.C. of 0.756 %, available nitrogen ranged from 377 – 1035 kg ha-1 with mean of 658.26 kg ha-1.The Phosphorus availability was found ranging from 20.5 – 48.80 kg ha-1 with a mean of 35.97 kg ha-1, while Potassium was found with a mean of 204.12 kg ha-1 in range of 163 – 302.2 kg ha-1.

Causes and Impact of Industrial Effluents on Receiving Water Bodies: A Review

Industrial development has begun to have a negative impact on the entire environment. The constant need and agreed of humans has resulted in the formation of massive polluting industries. Manufacturing, chemical and fertilizer industries are among those that are depleting the earth’s resources while also putting enormous strain on the environment and ecological system. Water pollution is well-known to be a growing problem of 21st century all over the earth. The planet’s natural diversity is affect seriously by any human activity. Rapid industrialization is an index of development of a nation, however; a rising in population growth alters it unfavorably. India, a developing nation has a challenge of maintaining a balance between these and the environment. In India, there has been a rapid growth in industrialization after freedom. The aims of this review paper represent the link between industrial effluents and define sources of water pollution present development in the research on the fresh water aquatic ecosystems.

Impact of industrial effluent on morphological characteristics of maize fodder

Industrial effluent (IE) is a serious threat to human, plant and aquatic lives. This study was carried out to assess the impact of IE on morphological characteristics of maize fodder at different stages of growth. The pot experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design using five treatments with eight replications at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur and IE was collected from the discharge points of the nearest garments located at BSMRAU. The treatments were T1, 100% FW (fresh water); T2, 75% FW + 25% IE; T3, 50% FW + 50% IE; T4, 25% FW + 75% IE; T5, 100% IE. The results indicated that IE decreased plant height and plant dry weight for all stages. Leaves number was reduced at the maturity stage in the IE treatments. No influence was observed on leaf length by IE. Higher concentrations of IE also influenced smaller leaf width at the vegetative stage. Root length was reduced for the application of IE at the maturity and vegetative stage. Root dry weight was higher for T1 and T3 at the flowering stage and T3 at the maturity stage. Hence, it may be concluded that IE had negative effect on the morphological characteristics of maize fodder. Bangladesh Journal of Animal Science 52 (1): 38-44, March 2023

Impact of industrial effluents on the environment and human health and their remediation using MOFs-based hybrid membrane filtration techniques

The hazardous risk posed by industrial effluent discharge into the ecosystem has raised a plethora of environmental issues, public health, and safety concerns. The effluents from industries such as tanning, leather, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and textiles are create significant stress on the aquatic ecosystem, which induces significant toxicity, involved in endocrine disruptions, and inhibits reproductive functions. Therefore, this review presented an overall abridgment of the effects of these effluents and their ability to synergize with modern pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetic chemicals, nanoparticles, and heavy metals. We further emphasize the metal organic framework (MOF) based membrane filtration approach for remediation of industrial effluents in comparison to the traditional remediation process. The MOF based-hybrid membrane filters provide higher reusability, better adsorption, and superior removal rates through the implication of nanotechnology, while the traditional remediation process offers poorer filtration rates and stability.

Impact of Industrial Effluents on Spatial Distribution of Soil Chemical Properties In Gazipur

Rapid industrialization contributes to the rising economic growth rate in Bangladesh. Gazipur district is one of the largest industrial zones in Bangladesh. Every day a huge amount of untreated industrial effluents is produced and delivered to the nearby crop field or water body. These effluents might have influenced the major chemical properties of soils. Hence, the present study was conducted to assess the impact of untreated industrial effluents on soil chemical properties expressed through a spatial distribution pattern map of the industrial zone of Gazipur district. A total of one hundred and four agricultural soil samples were collected with grid basis from different unions of the industrial areas of Sreepur and Gazipur Sadar upazilas. In Sreepur upazila, the mean values of soil pH, organic carbon (OC), N, P, S, K, Ca and Mg were 4.85, 0.81%, 0.11%, 6.08 ppm, 26.5 ppm, 0.13 meq/100g soil, 0.53 meq/100g soil and 0.19 meq/100g soil, respectively in uncontaminated soil, while the mean values of soil pH, OC, N, P, S, K, Ca and Mg were 5.15, 1.96%, 0.23%, 14.2 ppm, 187.61 ppm, 0.15 meq/100g soil, 0.64 meq/100g soil and 0.2 meq/100g soil, respectively due to industrial contamination. In both the upazilas, soil pH was strongly to slightly acidic while soil organic carbon was low to medium and N content was low. A weak spatial variation was detected for soil pH and N in these industrial areas indicating less influence on both the parameters by the effluents. Similarly, the contents of K, Ca and Mg were low in most of the areas of these two upazilas and a very little or no spatial variation was observed. Impact of industrial effluents on physico-chemical parameters of water and fatty acid profile of fish, Labeo rohita (Hamilton), collected from the Ramsar sites of Punjab, India.

In this contemporary era, wetlands and the entire aquatic diversity are suffering from major pollution problem. Not only the aggregation of higher population in metropolitan causes the production of plenty of solid, liquid and gaseous wastes, but also the high-technological industries contribute to a mammoth of wastes in the ecosystem. During the process of industrial effluent discharge into the water bodies, the toxic substances available in these wastes can affect the aquatic flora and fauna, resultantly disturbing the entire system and constituting human health hazards indirectly or directly. The objective of this study was to estimate the nutritional value of the liver and intestine of fish which is being discarded as waste during fish processing and pollution status by calculated water quality index (WQI) and comparison of both wetlands during diverse seasons. WQI of Harike Wetland was observed to be 56.68 which indicates that water quality in this wetland is “poor”, while at Nangal Wetland WQI was calculated to be 39.54 and comes under “good” water quality and safe for the entire ecosystem. HPI (heavy metal pollution index) for Harike Wetland was observed 144.9 and for Nangal Wetland was 3.12, indicating heavy load of heavy metal pollution at test sample site. MI (metal index) value was also detected higher at test sample site (4.76) as compared to that at control site (0.22). The mean total n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) declined in the liver of test fish samples (Harike Wetland) as compared to control fish (Nangal Wetland) samples except in winter season. Similarly, mean total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were also found to decline significantly (p<0.05) in the liver of test fish sample as compared to control fish sample during autumn and winter seasons. Significant (p<0.05) decline of mean total n-3 PUFAs (except winter) and total n-6 PUFAs (except rainy) in the intestine of test fish sample was observed during all the seasons when compared to control fish samples. However, total SFAs were found to increase in the intestine of test fish samples as compared to control fish samples during all the studied seasons. In the present investigation, fluctuations recorded in the water quality parameters and major groups of FAs in the tissues were due to the geographical location and pollution load in the fish samples taken from Harike Wetland.

Microorganisms Involved in the Bioremediation of Pentachlorophenol and Lignin Discharged by the Pulp and Paper Industry

Pulp and paper industry are one of the fastest-growing industries due to increased demand in paper products which are proved to affect our environment negatively. Global consumption of paper has increased by 400% in the last four decades and this suggests that more research is required to assess the impact of industrial effluents on our environment and public health. Paper products are generally biodegradable, however, the processes involved in its production which involve the use of mainly bleaching agents and other non-biodegradable substances pose a serious problem to the environment. There are more than 250 chemicals released in paper mill waste and some are xenobiotics. Different methods such as physical and chemical methods can be adopted for the remediation of the effluents but are proved to be costly and not safe to the environment. On the other hand, the biological method is shown to be less costly and environmentally friendly. Microorganisms and their enzymes have shown a promising future for bioremediation of effluents related to the paper mill. Pentachlorophenol is extremely hazardous to living cells and therefore need to be removed from the environment. Microorganisms including bacteria and fungi have the potential to degrade phenolic compounds e.g. Bacillus stearothermiphilus, Pseudomonas putida, Coricus versicolor, Sphingomonas chlorophenol, Fusarium sp, Bacillus subtilis and P. aeroginosa.. Enzymes used for the degradation include phenol hydrooxylase, polyphenoloxylase, laccase, peroxidase among others. Lignin is another important pollutant and is resistant to microbial degradation, but it has been proved that certain bacteria and fungi like can degrade it. This review focused on use of microorganism to reduce or eradicate pollutants released from the paper industry. It can serve as a review for further research to be conducted especially in the field of biotechnology.

Impact of industrial effluent on macrobenthic diversity: A case study of Thannirbhavi and Chitrapur coastal area of Mangalore

In view of understanding the impact of effluents and on the occurrence and distribution of macrobenthic organisms, an investigation has been carried out for a period of 8 months from October 2006 to May 2007 in the nearshore water of Thannirbhavi and Chitrapur receiving treated industrial effluents and Bengre coast having estuarine influences. The quality composition of benthic organism revealed the presence of hydroids such as Obeliasp,Cordylophorasp and companularia sp. Polychaetes belonging to 15 diferent families have been identified and their distribution revealed variation with respect to the type of the effluents. 24 different types of molluscss have been identified and their occurrence and distribution was found to be related to type of sediment and the quality of the effluents. Bulks of crustaceans were formed mainly due to species of Gammarus, Caprellids and Tanaidaceans. The great abundance and diversity of benthic organisms was observed in the Thannirbhavi receiving effluents from a fertilizer industry, when compare to the Chitrapur receiving treated effluents from a dye industry and an oil refinery industry. Silty-clayey sediment harbored higher density of polychaetes where as sandy-silty sediment supported greater abundance of molluscs.

Impact of industrial effluents on geotechnical properties of soil

The paper discuss the study on contaminants of the effluents from the industries affect the soil’s physical and engineering properties. Hence the soil properties are to be enhanced for strengthening of soil for the constructional and other activities. In metropolitan areas and highly populated cities the volume of pollutants produced by industries like dyeing, tanneries etc were enormously high. The chemical and physical properties very highly affected by those pollutants which make the soil unfit for any activity. In this study dyeing industry waste is taken as pollutants and laboratory experiments are carried out to determine soil properties. Physical properties like natural moisture content (NMC), Specific gravity (Sg), grain-size distribution (Gsd), Constant head permeability (CHP) are performed for both polluted and conventional soil samples. Engineering properties such as shear strength and permeability characteristics are taken. Comparison was made for both the samples and presented. The polluted soil contains 30% increase in manganese, 9.1% increase in copper content, 2% increase in lead and 10% increase in iron. Industrial effluents have affected the soil of about 11.9% in shear strength, from non-polluted soil which is been collected. Industrial effluents have affected the soil and an decrement of about 76.1% in permeability.

Impact of industrial effluents and simulated acid rain on growth, productivity and metal contamination in mungbean (Vigna radiate L.)

Environmental pollution poses a great health hazard to human beings, animals and plants. Industrial effluents and acid rain are the major pollutants that have a strong influence on the growth of crop plants. A pot trial was conducted to investigate the influence of industrial effluents and simulated acid rain (SAR) on the growth, productivity, biochemical and quality attributes of mungbean crop. The experiment was comprised of various treatments i.e. T0 = Control; T1 = industrial effluents (25%) + distilled water (DW) (75%); T2 = industrial effluents (50%) + DW (50%); T3 = industrial effluents (75%) + DW (25%); T4 = pure industrial effluents (100%) and T5 = acid rain (HCl at pH 3.5). Results revealed that maximum increase in chlorophyll contents (12.88%), pods per plant (27.90%), nodules per plant (34.78%), number of grains per pods (33.33%), 1000-seeds weight (8.53%) and seed yield (47.65%) was observed in T2 as compared to control. Significant increase in the grain metals contents was observed in the T4. However, application of SAR significantly decreases chlorophyll contents (14.11%), pods per plant (30.23%), nodules per plant (47.82%), number of grains per pods (33.33%), 1000-seeds weight (7.01%) and seed yield (51.40%) as compared to control. In crux, simulated acid rain and pure form of industrial effluents have toxic effect on the growth, yield and quality of mungbean. The adequate dilution of effluents treatment is therefore needed before the disposal and reuse of wastewaters for irrigation purposes. Chromium pollution assessment of water in the Hindon River, India: Impact of industrial effluents

The objective of the study is to reveal the seasonal variations in the Hindon River water pollution with respect to chromium contamination. The study was carried out from December 2014 to January 2017 by selecting twelve sampling stations of River Hindon. To get the extend of trace and ultratrace chromium contamination, water samples were collected from twelve different sites along the course of the River and its tributaries for summer and winter seasons. Higher concentrations of chromium (0.096mg/L) in summer and (0.088) in winter at Mohannagar (Ghaziabad) were recorded, thus indicating very high pollution of chromium at this sampling station. The concentration of chromium was determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). In the past decades the increased use of chromium in several anthropogenic activities and consequent contamination of soil and water have become an increasing concern. Cr exists in several oxidation states but the most stable and common forms are Cr(0), Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species. Cr (VI) is a notorious environmental pollutant because it is a strong oxidant and much more toxic than Cr (III) and also carcinogenic.

Impact of industrial effluents on Alaro river in Oluyole industrial estate, Ibadan and its suitability for aquatic life

Human activities involving urbanization, agricultural development, overuse of fertilizers, inadequate management of land use and waste disposal can affect the quality of water and making it unfit for both aquaculture and domestic purposes. Thus, overexploitation and its attendant pollution is dangerous and threatening to spoil freshwater and aquatic ecosystems. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate quality of water around an industrial area in order to assess its suitability for aquatic life and to evolve policies for use and protection of water resources. A total number of thirty (30) water samples were collected from six (6) different sites and were subjected to hydrochemical analysis using various standard methods to determine their conformity to World Health Organization (WHO) maximum allowance concentration. As against the WHO recommendation of absence of colouration for drinking water, the water samples were not all colourless but had varying colours ranging from light green to greenish brown. The mean values of Conductivity (387.27uS), pH (7.38), Total Suspended Solids [TSS] (423.87mg/L) and Total Dissolved Solids[TDS] (212.97mg/L) fall within the WHO standard, those of Salinity (0.18%), Turbidity (149.00 NTU), Biochemical Oxygen Demand[BOD] (106.80mg/L), Chemical Oxygen Demand[COD] (187.10mg/L) and NH4 (4.44mg/L) were higher than the WHO standard while Dissolved Oxygen[DO] (3.49mg/L) and CL-(39.48mg/L) fall below the standard. These parameters make Alaro river unsuitable for aquatic life (fish) and therefore recommended that government and other stakeholders should take overdue steps in the development and implementation of waste water and industrial effluent receiving facilities in order to prevent discharge of untreated effluents into water bodies.Keywords: Fresh water, Hydrochemical, Pollution, Standard, Urbanization

Assessment of the Impacts of Refinery Effluent on the Physico-chemical Properties of Ubeji Creek, Delta State, Nigeria

Ubeji Creek in Delta State, Nigeria is an important source of surface water for residents in Warri area is continually being polluted by the regular introduction of wastes and effluents from industries. The impact of industrial effluent on the physico-chemical properties of Ubeji creek in Warri, Delta State was investigated to determine the quality of the water body as well as the extent of pollution. The data that were used in this study were generated from direct field measurements and laboratory analyses. Results of measured parameters showed variation in pH (7.04-7.22), total hardness (32.75-127.63 mg/l), turbidity (26.18-69.75 NTU), THC (2.61-9.37 mg/l), TDS (78.20-615.30 mg/l), TSS (12.63-13.34 mg/l), COD (12.85-49.10 mg/l), BOD (7.34-15.62 mg/l), EC (158.06-1270.80 μs/cm), DO (3.12-4.37 mg/l), phosphate (<0.01 mg/l), bicarbonate (1.23-17.85 mg/l), sulphate (6.52-37.44 mg/l) and nitrate concentrations ranging from 0.28-39.01 mg/l. The results were compared with the DPR and FEPA permissible limits as well as the WHO allowable limits for potable water. The major sources of pollution were observed to be effluents from the industries and dump sites within and around the creek catchment. This is indicative of the ineffective treatment systems and illegal waste disposal practices. These effluents were observed to have negative impact on the creek’s ecosystem and pose a health risk to several rural communities which rely on the receiving water body as their source of domestic water. In order to improve the ecological status of the creek, waste management practice of effluent treatment and strict enforcement of existing legislation to ensuring compliance.

Impact of industrial effluents on geochemical association of metals within intertidal sediments of a creek

Metal speciation studies were carried out on three intertidal core sediments of the industrially impacted Dudh creek located along west coast of India. Metals indicated a drastic increase in the bioavailable fraction towards the surface of the cores, suggesting an increase in anthropogenic metal input in recent years as compared to the past. Also, when compared with Vaitarna estuary and Khonda creek of Thane district, the speciation of metals in Dudh creek sediments was observed to have been highly modified in recent years. High concentrations of metals associated with bioavailable fractions therefore suggested a risk of toxicity to sediment associated biota of Dudh creek.

Impact of industrial effluent on growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in silty clay loam soil

Degradation of soil and water from discharge of untreated industrial effluent is alarming in Bangladesh. Therefore, buildup of heavy metals in soil from contaminated effluent, their entry into the food chain and effects on rice yield were quantified in a pot experiment. The treatments were comprised of 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% industrial effluents applied as irrigation water. Effluents, initial soil, different parts of rice plants and post-harvest pot soil were analyzed for various elements, including heavy metals. Application of elevated levels of effluent contributed to increased heavy metals in pot soils and rice roots due to translocation effects, which were transferred to rice straw and grain. The results indicated that heavy metal toxicity may develop in soil because of contaminated effluent application. Heavy metals are not biodegradable, rather they accumulate in soils, and transfer of these metals from effluent to soil and plant cells was found to reduce the growth and development of rice plants and thereby contributed to lower yield. Moreover, a higher concentration of effluent caused heavy metal toxicity as well as reduction of growth and yield of rice, and in the long run a more aggravated situation may threaten human lives, which emphasizes the obligatory adoption of effluent treatment before its release to the environment, and regular monitoring by government agencies needs to be ensured.

Variability in the Structure of Phytoplankton Assemblages in relation to Human Disturbance in Southern Coast of Tunisia

We investigated the impact of industrial effluents on phytoplankton assemblage in southern Tunisia (Skhira). We specifically addressed changes in microalgae composition caused by this anthropogenic interference. A hierarchical sampling design was used to compare planktonic microalgae structure between one disturbed station and one control station. Samples were collected by scuba diving at 5 m depth in August 2012. A total of 76 microalgae taxa were identified. Dinoflagellates abundance was low in the disturbed station, especially Gonyaulacales and Prorocentrales due to P-limitation, whereas diatoms and cyanobacteria abundance were low in control station which is characterized by Si-limitation.
