The impact of highway construction on the volume and distribution of traffic flows: Case study for highway A2 in Serbia

In this paper, the total traffic flows on the old and new road were analyzed, after the construction of the new road. Traffic flows were analyzed on the example of the A2 highway (the Miloš Veliki highway) and the B-22 road (the so-called Ibarska Magistrala). The aim of the papaer is the analysis of the distribution of total traffic flows, as well as the analysis of traffic flows by toll categories between old and new road. Statistical analysis methods were applied in the paper. The obtained results show a significant increase in total traffic flows after the construction of the highway on the Belgrade - Čačak road direction. The analysis yielded very interesting data on the distribution of traffic flows. In further research, it is necessary to conduct a survey in order to reveal the realtions and influencing factors on the volume and distribution of traffic flows, as well as the category of traffic flows (newly created, diverted and normal traffic flows).

Impact of Highway Construction on Internal Migration: A Korea Perspective

Transportation facilities in the classical migration model expand the scale of population movement by reducing the physical distance and costs of travel between regions. This study empirically analyzes the effect of population inflow into a region near a highway construction using a migration model. The purpose was to examine whether large-scale transportation infrastructure such as highways contributes to the growth and balanced development of the connected regions. Four metropolitan transport-type and commuter transport-type highway routes constructed in South Korea after 2000 were used as study subjects. The results show that population inflow occurred in the region where commuter transport-type highways were constructed. However, no effect was observed in regions where metropolitan transport-type highways were constructed. The reason for these unique results is that factors affecting migration include not only transit facilities, but also parameters such as economic factors, housing, and amenities. Moreover, the findings show that the impact of population inflow is affected by the geographical characteristics of the highway construction areas and city size.

Evaluating the impact of highway construction projects on landscape ecological risks in high altitude plateaus

In China and other countries, many highway projects are built in extensive and high-altitude flat areas called plateaus. However, research on how the materialisation of these projects produce a series of ecological risks in the landscape is very limited. In this research, a landscape ecological risk analysis model for high-altitude plateaus is proposed. This model is based on the pattern of land uses of the surrounding area. Our study includes buffer analysis, spatial analysis, and geostatistical analysis. We apply the model to the Qumei to Gangba highway, a highway section located in the southeast city of Shigatse at the Chinese Tibet autonomous region. Through global and local spatial autocorrelation analysis, the spatial clustering distribution of ecological risks is also explored. Overall, our study reveals the spatial heterogeneity of ecological risks and how to better mitigate them. According to a comparison of the risk changes in two stages (before and after the highway construction), the impact of highway construction on the ecological environment can be comprehensively quantified. This research will be of interest to construction practitioners seeking to minimize the impact of highway construction projects on the ecological environment. It will also inform future empirical studies in the area of environmental engineering with potential affection to the landscape in high-altitude plateaus.

Research on the Impact of Expressway on the County Economy Based on a Spatial DID Model: The Case of Three Provinces of China

Infrastructure construction results in transportation cost and regional economy changes. Based on the exogenous infrastructure change of a county highway opening as a natural experiment, this paper uses the spatial difference-in-differences (DID) model to analyze the impact of highway construction in three different provinces of China from 2004 to 2017. It was proved that highway connectivity had no significant or negative impact on the economy of the counties in three provinces that the highway passes through. In addition, highway connectivity was claimed to have obvious spatial spillover effects, which could promote the economic development of the whole region. For counties belonging to provinces in different regions and stages of economic development, we establish a spatial DID model that integrates time and space dimensions to study the impact of expressways on county economic development, to make up for the traditional DID model’s dependence on SUTVA assumptions, and to obtain spatial spillover effects.

Research on the Economic Impact of Shandong Expressway Development

By obtaining the panel data of 16prefecture-level cities in Shandong Province from 2005 to 2018 for 14 years, this paper selects Shandong highway mileage as the core explanatory variable, GDP as the explained variable, urbanization rate, passenger volume, freight volume, government participation and fixed capital investment level as other explanatory variables, and adds economic lag effect on this basis. The fixed effect model or random effect model is tested according to the modified Hausman test. In order to make the results more accurate and reliable, the data are tested and corrected by inter-group heteroscedasticity, intra-group autocorrelation, cross-sectional correlation and multiple collinearity, and the spatial effect of Shandong economy is tested by Moran index. In-depth verification of the impact of highway construction on the economy of Shandong Province. The results show that the random effect model has passed the Hausman test. The revised model shows that highway construction has a positive effect on the overall economy of Shandong Province, and other explanatory variables also have varying degrees of pulling effect on the economy, but the spatial effect of economy is not significant, which provides a reference basis and example verification for highway construction in the future. To better promote the close ties between the regions of Shandong Province and make contributions to economic development.

Has highway construction narrowed the urban–rural income gap? Evidence from Chinese cities

AbstractUsing 2003–2016 panel data of 278 prefecture‐level Chinese cities, we analysed the relationship between highway construction, resource flow, and urban–rural income gap using multiple spatial econometric models. Overall highway construction has narrowed the urban–rural income gap owing to better population mobility and goods flow. However, while goods flow has narrowed the gap, population mobility has aggravated it. A regional difference in the impact of highway construction also exists, that is, the effect is negative in central and western cities, but positive for eastern cities. Moreover, China's “4 trillion” fiscal and currency stimulus plan has strengthened highway construction in narrowing the income gap.

Impact of highway construction on land surface energy balance and local climate derived from LANDSAT satellite data

Extensive construction of highways has a major impact on the landscape and its structure. They can also influence local climate and heat fluxes in the surrounding area. After the removal of vegetation due to highway construction, the amount of solar radiation energy used for plant evapotranspiration (latent heat flux) decreases, bringing about an increase in landscape surface temperature, changing the local climate and increasing surface run-off. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the D8 highway construction (Central Bohemia, Czech Republic) on the distribution of solar radiation energy into the various heat fluxes (latent, sensible and ground heat flux) and related surface functional parameters (surface temperature and surface wetness). The aim was to describe the severity of the impact and the distance from the actual highway in which it can be observed. LANDSAT multispectral satellite images and field meteorological measurements were used to calculate surface functional parameters and heat balance before and during the highway construction. Construction of a four-lane highway can influence the heat balance of the landscape surface as far as 90m in the perpendicular direction from the highway axis, i.e. up to 75m perpendicular from its edge. During a summer day, the decrease in evapotranspired water can reach up to 43.7m3 per highway kilometre. This means a reduced cooling effect, expressed as the decrease in latent heat flux, by an average of 29.7MWh per day per highway kilometre and its surroundings. The loss of the cooling ability of the land surface by evaporation can lead to a rise in surface temperature by as much as 7°C. Thus, the results indicate the impact of extensive line constructions on the local climate.

Impact of highway construction on water bodies: a geospatial assessment.

India has witnessed a massive infrastructure boom in the past few years. One of such projects is National Highway-7 (NH-7), a North-South highway connecting Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, traversing many water bodies. The present study aims to assess the pre- and post-construction impact due to existing, new and widened NH-7 on the physical status of the water bodies, using remote sensing techniques. Satellite images spanning 22years were procured and analysed for change detection in land use and land cover within the waterbodies. The study indicates that construction activities have led to transformation within the water bodies regarding reduction in area and inter-changing of land use and land cover classes, in turn leading to siltation and reduction of recharge.

Effects of Varying Functional Classification on Cost of Roadways

Weakened purchasing power and dwindling funds are causing transportation agencies to rethink their engineering practices in order to achieve more cost-effective designs. Increasing public awareness of the impact of highway construction on the surrounding environment has also resulted in pressure on transportation agencies to minimize impacts by incorporating context sensitive solutions in their designs. Major design criteria, such as design speed and design traffic volume, ultimately determine how expensive a project will be and the level of environmental impacts that it will have. Selection of design criteria, however, begins with the determination of the functional classification of the roadway. The purpose of this technical note is to determine the costs and impacts of several typical roadways with different functional classifications, using typical design criteria for each functional classification. This work is not presented as fundamental research, but is intended to provide decision makers with an estimated range of costs and impacts associated with different functional classifications in different types of terrain, for use in making early policy level decisions.

Effects of highway construction on soil quality in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region in Yunnan Province

The impact of highway construction upon surrounding ecosystems in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region of Southwestern China was detected based on field survey and experimental analysis. We conducted a study on Dali (from Dali City to Lijiang City) provincial road, Dabao (from Dali City to Baoshan City) highway and Baolong (from Baoshan City to Longling County) highway in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region to detect the effect of highway construction on surrounding soil quality using the method of space-for-time substitution, and predicted remediation of surrounding soil quality. The results showed that: (1) The effect of highway construction on both natural and cultivated soil quality is significant, and the effect is more significant in the period of highway construction than the period of highway in use. (2) The effects of highway construction is more apparent on downslope than upslope, and effect range was 200 m on downslope, while 150 m on upslope. (3) Soil remediation is mainly related to effect extent of highway construction, highway service time, vegetation restoration, soil organic matter and soil total nitrogen, among which, highway construction is the most important factor. (4) When vegetation coverage can be restored to 30% of the original condition, soil quality can be remedied to 44% of the original condition after 10 years, indicating that soil fertility remediation is rather difficult once it is destroyed.

Environmental Impact of Construction and Repair Materials on Surface Water and Groundwater: Screening and Evaluation Methodology

The 6-year NCHRP Project 25-9, titled Environmental Impact of Construction and Repair Materials on Surface and Ground Waters, concluded in March 2000. The main purpose of the study was to develop and demonstrate a methodology for identification of the possible impact of highway construction and repair (C&R) materials on the quality of surface water and groundwater in the immediate highway environment. The evaluation methodology consisted of an initial screening of a raw (unamended) C&R material leachate for aquatic toxicity by using bioassay tests and of further detailed testing and evaluation of those materials identified as potentially toxic. In the detailed evaluation, leaching source term tests were conducted to determine leachate composition under varying environmental conditions. Environmental tests were then conducted on the leachate to determine the effects of removal, reduction, and retardation (RRR) processes in the highway environment. The environmental processes included photolysis, volatilization, biodegradation, and soil sorption. The leaching and RRR tests identified interactions between specific environmental processes and leachate contaminants and yielded empirically derived functions for each process. The functions were coupled with selected reference environments in a computer model to simulate fate and transport for surface and subsurface pathways. Model results were reported as concentrations, loads, or fluxes of contaminants as a function of time at the highway boundary. Complete evaluation methodology results are presented for a standard asphalt cement concrete developed to serve as a reference asphalt concrete for interlaboratory comparisons.

Impact of highway construction on leaf processing in aquatic habitats of eastern Tennessee

Rates of leaf litter processing at eight sites were used in conjunction with other methods to evaluate the impact of highway construction on aquatic habitats. Monthly processing of white oak leaves from four different mesh size bags at unimpacted reference sites indicated that the three larger mesh sizes were useful for comparing sites, as they did not restrict invertebrate colonization and provided similar rates of processing within sites. Small mesh size (0.12 mm) prevented leaf shredding macroinvertebrates from colonizing bags, and caused significantly slower leaf processing in a riffle.

Highway Construction Impact on Water-Supply Lakes

A unique opportunity existed and was taken advantage of, in Halifax, to assess the environmental impact of highway construction on four water-supply lakes (Long Lake, First Chain Lake, Second Chain Lake, and Withrod Lake) two of which were as close as 30 ft (10 m) from the proposed highway. Although the water qualities of Long and Chain Lakes have not deteriorated significantly as a result of construction, certain parameters such as conductivity, chloride, and total organic carbon have been increasing throughout the study period indicating the increasing uses of the watersheds. The gabions, intended to be the pollution control devices, were not effective in reducing the suspended impurities in the runoff, because the surface runoff bypassed the gabions in some cases and the pore sizes of the gabion structures were too coarse to effectively filter the water in other cases. However, sand bags installed near the First Chain Lake were successful in diverting runoff from the construction site and, thus, reduced the pollution load entering that lake.
