Regulatory greening: The impact of environmental legislation on corporate green innovation

China's New Environmental Protection Law (NEPL) is an important adjustment in the face of the “new normal of economic development”. Leveraging the Difference-in-Difference (DID) method, we discern the multifaceted positive effects of the NEPL on both the qualitative and quantitative dimensions of green innovation. The mechanism analysis indicates that the enactment engenders heightened environmental awareness among senior management, increased cash holdings, and released financing constraints, leading to enhance the green innovations. Interestingly, a positive tone of management discussion and analysis (MD&A) can amplify the NEPL’s effect on green innovation scale, but its moderating effect on the quality development is not significant. Furthermore, the NEPL can more comprehensively and significantly enhance the green innovation activities in capital-intensive industries and large corporations.

The Development and Effects of Environmental Law on Green Governance

Objective: The legal framework governing ecological preservation and sustainability is best appreciated via research into the history and impact of environmental legislation on the "green" notion. It explains how laws and regulations affect the environment, shifting business models, government regulations, and individual attitudes and actions in a more sustainable direction. In a world where environmental legislation, sustainable practices, and ecological challenges are on the rise, it is crucial to have this knowledge. There are several obstacles in the way of the growth and consequences of environmental law on the "green" idea, including the need to strike a balance between economic interests and ecological preservation, the need to ensure worldwide harmonization of rules, and the need to adjust legal frameworks to handle developing environmental difficulties.
 
 Method: This paper proposes the Contrastive Exploration and Influence of Environmental Law (CE&IEL), which will examine the development and current relevance of environmental law, focusing on its transformative effects on sustainable practices within the "green" framework. The research has a number of potential uses, including informing policy decisions by illuminating the ways in which environmental laws affect "green" practices, assisting industries in aligning with sustainable regulations to increase corporate responsibility, and assisting educational institutions in integrating legal and ecological perspectives to better prepare students for careers in environmental governance.
 
 Result: Computerized models (CM) are used in the growth and impacts of environmental law on green to foresee how shifting environmental legislation would affect green business practices.
 
 Conclusion: This strategy helps policymakers, industries, and researchers understand the dynamic interplay between legal reforms and their impact on developing ecological consciousness through the use of simulated trials of alternative legal approaches, revealing previously unknown insights.

Characterising heavy-duty fuel systems: a critique of industry practice and challenges

Fuel system components must perform optimally to ensure the maximum fuel economy and the minimum emissions. The key to optimised performance is effective characterisation of the system in the factory. This paper describes methods for discerning the features of a fuel injection system’s performance during built-unit testing. First, a background is given, highlighting the impact of environmental legislation. Next, specifications for a modern fuel system and key functionality characteristics are identified, and a brief overview of the alternative system configurations offered. The injector function is then discussed, with the importance of the key subcomponents being explained. Methods of testing and characterising the fuel injector performance in use are then described. Finally, there is discussion on the future of fuel system testing, and how developing challenges such as measuring the injection timing and the fuelling quantity in high-pressure, high-temperature and high-vibration environments might be overcome with better instruments and novel testing strategies including a paradigm shift away from steady-state testing to fully dynamic system testing.

An Evaluation of the Impact and Effectiveness of Environmental Legislation in Small and Medium‐Sized Enterprises: Experiences from the UK

ABSTRACTWith small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) accounting for 99.7% of the 4.7 million UK businesses, they can have a huge collective impact on the environment, which in turn is being increasingly regulated. This study investigated the impact and effectiveness of environmental legislation on UK SMEs as well as determining if ‘compliance’ results in improved environmental protection. Interviews were conducted with SME management, site staff, regulators, policy officials and support organisations. Forty‐four SMEs from the north‐west of England participated in the study, and overall a total of 99 individuals were interviewed. The study clearly indicates that the impact of environmental legislation on SMEs is overstated and impact increased commensurate with effort to comply and enforcement action. Only one of the SMEs studied had been prosecuted and only two had been inspected. Compliance issues identified in those SMEs subject to direct regulation did not correlate with previous compliance audits conducted. In general, SMEs had poor awareness of compliance issues; non‐compliance was only really recognised and acknowledged if identified by a regulator and only regarded as serious if prosecuted. Regulation of the environment is clearly only effective if complied with; understanding compliance levels can help measure the link between legislation and environmental protection. The effectiveness of environmental legislation can only be understood if SMEs are subject to regular regulatory contact. Recommendations to improve SME compliance control systems are provided. Assessment of Compliance Performance of Environmental Regulations of Industries in Tuzla (Istanbul, Turkey)

Although environmental management in Turkey is evolving, its performance needs to be assessed in terms of the extent to which polluters and dischargers are complying with their legal obligations. In spite of this necessity, however, not a single study evaluating the effectiveness of command-and-control strategy of environmental management has been conducted. It is for this reason that it was decided to conduct an analysis of the impact of environmental legislation on a major industrial area in Turkey. Accordingly, Turkish environmental legislation was analyzed and all relevant obligations and responsibilities of industry are identified. Based upon this appraisal, a questionnaire was prepared and used to conduct interviews in Tuzla, Istanbul. From the results, it can be concluded that environmental compliance performance of industry is low. The total of 92 parameters have been questioned. 53 parameters have been found as satisfactory compliance whereas 26 parameters have been classified as partial compliance and 13 as unsatisfactory compliance. The most important reason for inadequate performance is the lack of effective national and local environmental compliance management system. The other leading reasons are found to be low-level environmental consciousness of the people, absence of environmental management system at the sites, inadequacies in environmental subsidies and insufficiencies in public environmental infrastructure. Four recommendations are made to increase the effectiveness of compliance management: establishing an effective environmental compliance management system, accelerating public investment for environmental infrastructure, developing financial subsidies and incentive schemes for environmental investments and encouraging voluntary initiatives.

What's in it for us? Or: the impact of environmental legislation on competitiveness

The dispute on the impact of environmental legislation on international trade, national competitiveness, technological innovativeness and companies' profitability is as yet undecided. The predominant positions will be illustrated in the following meso/micro-study detailing the impact (European) environmental legislation has on the competitiveness of a large chemical company. This study draws important conclusions and outlines remarkable implications by employing an instrumental distinction between short-term costs/benefits and longer-term innovativeness. It can be argued persuasively that environmental legislation has created a rat race among the major players at the (longer-term) cost of smaller companies. PCB congeners in human milk in Germany from 1984/85 and 1990/91

Studies of so-called bioindicators clearly show the impact of environmental legislation on PCB contamination of the environment and of the food chain in the Federal Republic of Germany. This is evident from the results of studies performed in our laboratory on samples of muscle tissue from foxes that were submitted for post-mortem examination in the years 1983, 1987 and 1991. Whereas the concentration of low-chlorinated congeners of high-chlorinated biphenyls, with the exception of PCB no. 101, decreased. This trend may also be responsible for changes in the otherwise stable PCB concentrations in human milk. Consequently, in the study describe here, milk samples from 1990/91, from women in Middle-Hesse, Germany, were examined and the results compared to samples stemming from 1984/85. 11 refs., 3 tabs.

There can have been few periods in the history of the electronics soldering industry when the introduction of new technologies was so widespread and prevalent. Many of these changes have the objective of improving the efficiency of the process, and examples of this might be nitrogen soldering and the new developments in reflow soldering. Other changes, however, are being forced upon the industry by the impact of environmental legislation, and examples in this case include the ban on the use of CFCs and the growing pressure to replace lead‐containing solders with non‐toxic alternatives. The content of the soldering session reflected these concerns, with papers on nitrogen soldering, developments in reflow soldering and environmental issues.
