Research on energy storage charging piles based on improved genetic algorithm

Aiming at the charging demand of electric vehicles, an improved genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the energy storage charging piles optimization scheme. Firstly, the characteristics of electric load are analyzed, the model of energy storage charging piles is established, the charging volume, power and charging/discharging timing constraints in the charging process are considered, and the optimization is carried out by the improved genetic algorithm, and the profit of charging piles and user charging electricity charges are calculated, so as to obtain the possible optimal parameters, as well as the impact of the energy storage system on the stability of the power grid. Secondly, the analysis of the results shows that the energy storage charging piles can not only improve the profit to reduce the user’s electricity cost, but also reduce the impact of electric vehicle charging on the power grid load.

SWOT analysis of electric transport and V2G implementation for power system sustainable development in the terms of Ukraine

An analysis was carried out to examine the prospects for the integration of smart charging technologies, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), into the power system in Ukraine. The country is experiencing a growing concern regarding greenhouse gas emissions. The transport sector in Ukraine is one of the most energy-intensive sectors of the economy and contributes significantly to environmental degradation. The use of internal combustion engines in transport also increases the country’s dependence on imported fuel due to the high demand for petroleum products. The integration of electric transport and smart charging technologies, particularly V2G, is seen as a critical solution with immense potential to mitigate climate change. V2G technology is becoming increasingly relevant as the world transitions towards a more sustainable energy future. V2G refers to the bi-directional flow of energy between electric vehicles (EVs) and the grid. With V2G, EVs can not only consume energy from the grid but also supply energy back to the grid during peak demand periods, helping to stabilize the grid and increase its resilience. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a stable policy to promote these technologies and compare the features of the policy of integrating electric vehicles and the energy system in Ukraine. A qualitative strategic planning methodology, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, was used to evaluate the diverse measures and initiatives related to electric transport development and infrastructure while integrating them into the power system. This analysis identified problems associated with the impact of EV charging on the power system, such as the inability to provide increased energy needs or limiting the EV charging infrastructure load. However, a high percentage of renewable energy sources, increased social awareness of climate change, and reduced prices of electric vehicles could provide the necessary opportunities for developing electric transport in Ukraine.

Analysis and mitigation of the impact of electric vehicle charging on service disruption of distribution transformers

The transition to electric mobility could overload distribution transformers to unprecedented levels. Sustained overloads produce excessive heat within the transformer and hasten insulation deterioration. As EV deployment rises and the severity of overloads increases, the focus shifts from long-term effects that reduce transformer life to more immediate impacts that can disrupt normal functioning. The latter typically manifest as the blowing of protection fuse, the triggering of pressure relief device, or the breakdown of winding insulation, each of which could result in transformer outage. The transformer’s vulnerability can be monitored in terms of its apparent power flow, top-oil temperature and hottest-spot temperature. The IEEE C57.91 standard specifies the permissible range for these parameters, beyond which the transformer operation could get interrupted. A study to determine the range of EV penetration that can be accommodated by a distribution transformer without any discontinuity in its operation is presented in this paper. The non-linear nature of EV charging is incorporated in the analysis to account for the effect of higher-order harmonics on the transformer’s internal temperature. The effectiveness of a controlled charging strategy, which seeks to regulate transformer loading by minimizing its variance, in preventing service disruption is also validated in this simulation study.

Power Quality Issues of Electro-Mobility on Distribution Network—An Overview

The journey towards sustainable transportation has significantly increased the grid penetration of electric vehicles (EV) around the world. The connection of EVs to the power grid poses a series of new challenges for network operators, such as network loading, voltage profile perturbation, voltage unbalance, and other power quality issues. This paper presents a coalescence of knowledge on the impact that electro-mobility can impose on the grid, and identifies gaps for further research. Further, the study investigates the impact of electric vehicle charging on the medium-voltage network and low-voltage distribution network, keeping in mind the role of network operators, utilities, and customers. From this, the impacts, challenges, and recommendations are summarized. This paper will be a valuable resource to research entities, industry professionals, and network operators, as a ready reference of all possible power quality challenges posed by electro-mobility on the distribution network.

Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure on the Electric Load Profile of Power System: The Case of Latvia

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly, and charging infrastructure must keep up with that pace. With increasing charging load, a power system must adapt to the increasing power demand. The research question of this study is: what impact of EV charging on electric load profile is depending on the number of EVs and the mix of charging units (slow, medium, fast)? How much of the total power demand of EVs can be supplied from renewables, i.e., wind and solar power, considering the installed capacities of these technologies, and the match between power production and consumption. Energy system modeling on an hourly basis for different scenarios of the mix of charging units, number of EVs, and installed capacities of wind power plants and solar PVs was used as the method. EnergyPLAN software was used as the modeling tool. The results show the total power demand, peak load, and share of EV charging power demand that can be covered by renewable power technologies for Latvia’s power system in the year 2050. The results are obtained for scenarios of different combinations of EV charging units.

SITUATION ANALYSIS OF ELECTRIC TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS AND ITS INTEGRATION INTO UKRAINIAN POWER SYSTEM

An analysis of the prospects for the development of electric transport and its integration into the energy system in the conditions of Ukraine was carried out using strategic planning methods. It was found that the transport sector in Ukraine has a significant impact on the environment, is one of the most energy-consuming sectors of the economy, and, in addition, transport with internal combustion engines is a significant factor in increasing dependence on imported fuel due to a steady and significant demand for petroleum products. Instead, it is electric transport and technologies for its interaction with the power system that are one of the key technologies that offer great potential for mitigating the effects of climate change. Thus, at the current stage, there is an urgent need to develop a stable policy of promoting these technologies, for which it is necessary to determine and compare the features of the policy of integration of electric vehicles and the energy system in the conditions of Ukraine. This study uses a qualitative strategic planning methodology using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis to take into account as much as possible the multifaceted activities and initiatives related to the development of electric transport and its infrastructure while integrating them into the power system. The research conducted reveals problems related to the impact of electric vehicle charging on the power system, for example, the inability to provide for increased energy needs or to limit the electrical load of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure. On the other hand, a high percentage of the share of RES, increasing social awareness of climate change and lowering the prices of electric vehicles can provide the necessary opportunities for the development of electric transport in the conditions of Ukraine.

Cyber-Physical Architecture of Intelligent Interaction Between Electric Vehicle and Power Grid

With the increasing penetration rate of electric vehicles, their charging is random and intermittent in space and time, which put forward higher requirements for the safe, stable operation and power quality of the power grid. The information flow and energy flow exist at the same time in the vehicle pile network linkage, and the degree of integration of the three is also getting higher and higher. Based on the hierarchical architecture of cyber-physical system, the fusion model for V2G is established, which is helpful to study relevant strategies to minimize the impact of electric vehicle charging and discharging on the main power grid.

Charging Behavior Analysis Based on Operation Data of Private BEV Customers in Beijing

Charging behavior is essential to understanding the real performance and evaluating the sustainability of battery electric vehicle (BEV) development and providing the basis for optimal infrastructure deployment. However, it is very hard to obtain the rules, due to lack of the data support, etc. In this research, analyzing the charging behavior of users with private charging piles (PCPs) is carried out based on the real vehicle data of 168 BEV users in Beijing, covering 8825 charging events for a one-year duration. In this study, the charging behaviors are defined by five indexes: the starting state of charge (SOC) of batteries, charging location selection, charging start time, driving distance, and duration between two charging events. To further find the influencing rules of the PCPs owning state, we setup a method to divide the data into two categories to process further analysis and comparison. Meanwhile, in order to better observe the impact of electric vehicle charging on the power grid, we use a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to predict the charging load of different users based on the analysis. In addition, an agent-based trip chain model (ABTCM), a multinomial logistic regression (MLR), and a machine learning algorithm (MLA) approach are proposed to analyze the charging behavior. The results show that with 40% or lower charging start SOC, the proportion of users without PCPs (weekday: 55.9%; weekend: 59.9%) is larger than users with PCPs (weekday: 45.5%; weekend: 42.6%). Meanwhile, users without PCPs have a certain decrease in the range of 60–80% charging start SOC. The median charging time duration is 51.44 h for users with PCPs and is 17.25 h for users without PCPs. The charging peak effect is evident, and the two types of users have different power consumption distributions. Due to the existence of PCPs, users have lower mileage anxiety and more diverse charging time choices. The analysis results and method can provide a basis for optimal deployment and allocation of charging infrastructure, and to make suitable incentive policies for changing the charging behavior, targeting the carbon neutral objectives.

The Influence of the Electric Vehicle Charging Station on the Power Supply Network with Regard to Power Quality

The European Union (EU) aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and therefore a proposal has been accepted to improve publicly accessible charging and refueling infrastructure for alternative fuels. This will result in an increasing number of electric vehicles charging stations, which can negatively impact the power grid. Therefore, this paper investigates the impact of electric vehicle charging by a particular charging station on the grid from a power quality perspective. The charging station's harmonic components, reactive power, and power factor during different operating conditions are analyzed. The harmonic analysis for one period of supply voltage and current consumed by the charging station during maximum load, graphs of active power, reactive power, first harmonic power factor, and total power factor for different operating conditions are shown in this paper.

Energy storage for mitigating grid congestion caused by electric vehicles: A techno-economic analysis using a computationally efficient graph-based methodology

This paper studies the impact of electric vehicle charging on congestion in low-voltage networks and the economic feasibility of energy storage as an alternative to conventional network upgrades. To this end, we propose a computationally efficient graph-based methodology and employ it on a GIS data set of over 6,500 low-voltage networks. We provide insights regarding the types of networks that are most congested due to electric vehicle charging, the typical location of overloaded network components, and the types of networks in which a storage-based upgrade is profitable. A main result is that the number of networks in which it is profitable to use energy storage grows exponentially as the cost of energy storage decreases, regardless of the electric vehicle penetration level and charging power. Our findings also show that using energy storage to alleviate congestion can incur substantial savings, conditioned with a cost reduction of stationary energy storage to 200 US$/kWh and below.

Grid reactive voltage regulation and cost optimization for electric vehicle penetration in power network

Expecting large electric vehicle (EV) usage in the future due to environmental issues, state subsidies, and incentives, the impact of EV charging on the power grid is required to be closely analyzed and studied for power quality, stability, and planning of infrastructure. When a large number of energy storage batteries are connected to the grid as a capacitive load the power factor of the power grid is inevitably reduced, causing power losses and voltage instability. In this work large-scale 18K EV charging model is implemented on IEEE 33 network. Optimization methods are described to search for the location of nodes that are affected most due to EV charging in terms of power losses and voltage instability of the network. Followed by optimized reactive power injection magnitude and time duration of reactive power at the identified nodes. It is shown that power losses are reduced and voltage stability is improved in the grid, which also complements the reduction in EV charging cost. The result will be useful for EV charging stations infrastructure planning, grid stabilization, and reducing EV charging costs.

Impact of electric vehicle charging on the power demand of retail buildings

• Fast charging for electric vehicles will be more common at retail sites in the future. • Electric vehicle stations with high power levels can dwarf a building's power demand. • Electric vehicles may arrive at sites to charge when building AC loads are high. • Electricity bills increase most for cold climates and in high-demand-charge scenarios. As electric vehicle penetration increases, charging is expected to have a significant impact on the grid. Electric vehicle charging stations will greatly affect a building site's power demand, especially with the onset of fast charging with power levels as high as 350 kW per charger. Here, we assess how electric vehicle charging stations would impact a retail big box grocery store, exploring numerous station sizes, charging power levels, and utilization factors in various climate zones and seasons. We measure the effect of charging by assessing changes in monthly peak power demand, electricity usage, and annual electricity bill, computed using three distinct rate structures. We find that an electric vehicle station has the potential to dwarf a big box building's power demand if behind the same meter, increasing monthly peak power demand at the site by over 250%. Cold-climate areas paired with rate structures incorporating high demand charges are most susceptible for significant changes to the annual electricity bill, with increases as high as 88%.

The Impact of Electric Vehicle Density on Local Grid Costs: Empirical Evidence from Norway

While a rapid shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) will contribute to reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector, there are concerns that uncoordinated charging of EVs might impose challenges for the local electricity grid. Our study is the first to investigate this empirically in a country-wide analysis, using data from the country with the highest market share of EVs, namely Norway. We present the regulatory framework in which Norwegian grid companies operate and discuss the possible impact of EV charging. Using panel data on 107 grid companies over the period 2008-2017, we then estimate the effect of local growth in EVs on local grid costs. We find that increases in EV stock are associated with increases in costs which are both statistically and economically significant. However, there is a lot of heterogeneity in these results, where the effect on grid costs are higher for small grid companies in rural areas.

Smart Charging of Multiple EVs in Smart Grid Radial Low Voltage Distribution Networks

Abstract The harsh emissions constraints have pushed the Automotive industry to introduce Electric Vehicles (EV). Since the beginning of this millennia the numbers of EVs have increased from thousands to millions nowadays. The impact of EVs charging, over the Electrical networks has been studied in many publications, and everybody reached the same conclusion: if EV’s charging is not managed, the energy industry will suffer; increased investments, new energy production facilities will lead to increased energy prices. The concept of managing the EV’s charging process is connected to Smart Grid concept, and many publications are stating that a single centralized entity should regulate the chargingprocess. As such, in this paper a similar centralized EV charging control algorithm in low voltage distribution networks (LVDN) is proposed. The proposed algorithm, is regulating the EV charging power, while considering the LVDN network constraints. Specifically, the voltage constraints are taken into account, because the voltage levels within the network are a power supply quality indicator.

Impact of electric vehicle charging – An agent‐based approach

Several European countries have launched programs to increase the market penetration of battery electric vehicles (BEV). Similarly, politicians in Switzerland have targeted a 15% BEV share of new car registrations by 2022. As each electric car increases the power demand, new challenges are posed to the operation of existing distribution grid infrastructure. Here, a new bottom-up physical approach is presented that couples agent-based traffic simulations through an unsteady vehicle power consumption model with distribution grid power flow simulations. The impacts on hourly powerline loads from charging a car fleet with an 8.5% BEV share are quantified in the real distribution grid for the canton of Zurich. The grid is composed of 12,000 buses and 9,800 powerlines, providing power to 398,000 individual customers. Results indicate that the risk of overloaded powerlines is highest in low-level distribution grids. In our most critical future scenario, with simultaneous 8.5% BEV charging at 8 pm with 11 kW, peak line loads reach up to 132% of rated capacity. Hence, in a potential energy transition towards a decarbonised future, each individual distribution grid could face critical loads at specific temporal and spatial bottlenecks. Thus, grids should be assessed individually to limit uncertainties and risks of critical power system situations.

Electric Vehicle Charging System

Electric vehicles are a new and upcoming technology in the transportation and power sector that have many benefits in terms of economic and environmental. This study presents a comprehensive review and evaluation of various types of electric vehicles and its associated equipment in particular battery charger and charging station. A comparison is made on the commercial and prototype electric vehicles in terms of electric range, battery size, charger power and charging time. The various types of charging stations and standards used for charging electric vehicles have been outlined and the impact of electric vehicle charging on utility distribution systems is also discussed. The methodology presented here was time-and cost-effective, as well as scalable to other organizations that own charging stations. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular in many countries of the world. EVs are proving more energy efficient and environmental friendly. But the lack of charging stations restricts the wide adoption of EVs in the world. As EV usage grows, more public spaces are installing EV charging stations.

Optimized Strategic Planning of Future Norwegian Low-Voltage Networks with a Genetic Algorithm Applying Empirical Electric Vehicle Charging Data

This article outlines methods to facilitate the assessment of the impact of electric vehicle charging on distribution networks at planning stage and applies them to a case study. As network planning is becoming a more complex task, an approach to automated network planning that yields the optimal reinforcement strategy is outlined. Different reinforcement measures are weighted against each other in terms of technical feasibility and costs by applying a genetic algorithm. Traditional reinforcements as well as novel solutions including voltage regulation are considered. To account for electric vehicle charging, a method to determine the uptake in equivalent load is presented. For this, measured data of households and statistical data of electric vehicles are combined in a stochastic analysis to determine the simultaneity factors of household load including electric vehicle charging. The developed methods are applied to an exemplary case study with Norwegian low-voltage networks. Different penetration rates of electric vehicles on a development path until 2040 are considered.

The Simultaneous Impact of EV Charging and PV Inverter Reactive Power on the Hosting Distribution System’s Performance: A Case Study in Kuwait

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have become an increasingly important topic in the field of sustainable transportation research, alongside distributed generation, reactive power compensation, charging optimization, and control. The process of loading on existing power system infrastructures with increasing demand requires appropriate impact indices to be analyzed. This paper studies the impact of integrating electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) into a residential distribution network. An actual case study is modeled to acquire nodal voltages and feeder currents. The model obtains the optimal integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with charging stations while considering reactive power compensation. The impact of EV integration for the case study results in two peaks, which show a 6.4% and 17% increase. Varying the inverter to the PV ratio from 1.1 to 2 decreases system losses by 34% to 41%. The type of charging is dependent on the maximum penetration of EVCSs that the network can install without system upgrades. Increasing the number of EVCSs can cause an increase in power system losses, which is dependent on the network architecture. Installing PV reduces the load peak by 21%, and the installation of PV with consideration of reactive power control increases system efficiency and power delivery.

Research on the impact of different charge and discharge modes of electric vehicles on power grid load

The rapid development of the economy has made the scarcity of traditional fossil energy increasingly prominent. At the same time, with the proposal of the beautiful China strategy, electric vehicles have become an important choice for people to travel. Different charging and discharging modes of electric vehicles have different impacts on the power grid load production. Reasonably controlling the impact of electric vehicle charging and discharging loads on the power grid, narrowing the peak-to-valley difference, and ensuring the reliability of grid operation have become urgent issues to be resolved. This paper selects electric private cars and electric buses that have a large effect on the power grid load as the research object, and uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to extract the main influencing factors of electric vehicle charge and discharge. A charge and discharge daily load calculation model for electric vehicles under three modes of disorderly charging, one-way ordered charging and bidirectional ordered charging and discharging was constructed, and a typical Tianjin electric vehicle charging behavior research sample was selected. Monte Carlo method was used to predict the daily load of Tianjin electric vehicles under three charging and discharging modes, and the results were analyzed and discussed, and the corresponding management inspiration was given.
