Radiative forcing from aerosol–cloud interactions enhanced by large-scale circulation adjustments

The impact of anthropogenic aerosols on clouds is a leading source of uncertainty in estimating the effect of human activity on the climate system. The challenge lies in the scale difference between clouds (~1–10 km) and general circulation and climate (>1,000 km). To address this, we use convection-permitting simulations conducted in a long and narrow domain, to resolve convection while also including a representation of large-scale processes. We examine a set of simulations that include a sea surface temperature gradient—which drives large-scale circulation—and compare these with simulations that include no gradient. We show that the effective radiative forcing due to aerosol–cloud interactions is strongly enhanced by adjustments of large-scale circulation to aerosol. We find that an increase in aerosol concentration suppresses precipitation in shallow-convective regions, which enhances water vapour transport to the portion of the domain dominated by deep convection. The subsequent increase in latent heat release in deep-convective regions strengthens the overturning circulation and surface evaporation. These changes can explain the increase in cloudiness under higher aerosol concentrations and, consequently, the large aerosol radiative effect. This work highlights the fundamental importance of large-scale circulation adjustments in understanding the effective radiative forcing from aerosol–cloud interactions.

Quantitative attribution of the temperature associated with winter extreme cold events in China

Extreme cold events exert enormous impacts on the ecosystems and human health. A quantitative attribution analysis of the surface temperature anomalies associated with extreme cold events in China is conducted using an updated version of the coupled atmosphere-surface climate feedback response analysis method. For both extreme warm and cold years, the effects of anomalous surface albedo, water vapor, atmospheric dynamics, and aerosols are the major positive contributors, and the processes associated with surface dynamics provide a major negative effect. Specifically, the effect of surface albedo (water vapor) is directly linked to the change in local snow cover (precipitable water) over China. More local snow cover (precipitable water) provides a cooling (warming) effect and vice versa. The process associated with atmospheric dynamics exhibits an asymmetric contribution for the extreme warm and cold years. It provides a warming effect over most of China in the extreme warm years, which is possibly related to the nation-wide warm air advection. On the other hand, the effect of atmospheric dynamics displays large regional and year-to-year variations for the cold cases. In addition, a considerable impact of anthropogenic aerosols is detected over central-southern China, which is possibly related to the emission reduction policies in China since 2013. Although clouds show only a moderate impact on the national-averaged temperature anomalies, they provide a considerable effect over southern China.

Anthropogenic aerosol impacts on Pacific Coast precipitation in CMIP6 models

Studies show anthropogenic aerosols (AAs) can perturb regional precipitation, including the tropical rain belt and monsoons of the Northern Hemisphere (NH). In the NH mid-latitudes, however, the impact of AAs on regional climate and precipitation remains uncertain. This work investigates the influence of AAs on wintertime precipitation along the North American Pacific Coast using models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). Over the early to mid-20th century, when U.S. and European AA and precursor gas emissions rapidly increased, a robust wintertime precipitation dipole pattern exists in CMIP6 all-forcing and AA-only forcing simulations, with wetting of the southern Pacific Coast (southward of ∼40∘ N) and drying to the north. A corresponding dynamical dipole pattern also occurs—including strengthening of the east Pacific jet southward of ∼40∘ N and weakening to the north—which is related to a Rossby wave teleconnection that emanates out of the tropical Pacific. Over the 21st century, when AAs are projected to decrease, an opposite hydro-dynamic dipole pattern occurs, including drying southward of 40∘ N (including California) and wetting to the north. Although Pacific Coast precipitation is dominated by natural variability, good multi-model agreement in the forced component of Pacific Coast precipitation change exists, with the AA pattern (north south dipole) dominating the greenhouse gas (uniform) pattern in the historical all-forcing simulations. A high level of agreement in individual model-realization trends also exists, particularly for the early part of the 20th century, suggesting a robustness to the human signature on Pacific Coast precipitation changes. Thus, historical precipitation responses along the Pacific Coast are likely to have been driven by a mixture of natural variability and forced changes. Natural variations appear to drive a large fraction of this change, but human influences (i.e. aerosols) are likely to have preconditioned the variability of the climate in this region.

Disentangling physical and dynamical drivers of the 2016/17 record-breaking warm winter in China

Understanding the physical and dynamical origin of regional climate extremes remains a major challenge in our effort to anticipate the occurrences and mitigate the adverse impacts of these extremes. China was hit by a record-breaking hot winter in 2016/17 with remarkable surface warming over the northern and southeastern regions. Here we made a quantitative attribution of this 2016/17 winter’s surface temperature anomalies utilizing an updated version of the coupled atmosphere-surface climate feedback response analysis method (CFRAM), that recently incorporates the effect of aerosols and more species of trace gases (CFRAM-A). The CFRAM-A analysis reveals that the overall warming pattern may be largely attributed to the effects of anomalous water vapor, atmospheric dynamics, and aerosols, followed by anomalies of surface albedo, clouds, solar irradiance, ozone, and carbon dioxide. The effect of methane turns out to be negligible. Anomalies in surface dynamics provides an overall cooling effect, compensating the warming associated with other processes to some extent. Among the three major positive contributors, effects of water vapor and atmospheric dynamics prevail over both northern and southeastern China while the impact of anthropogenic aerosols appears much more pronounced over southeastern China, likely due to the implementation of highly effective emission reduction policies in China since 2013. The CFRAM-A thus provides an efficient, model-free approach for quantitatively understanding sources of regional temperature extremes and for assessing the impacts of environmental policies regulating anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and atmospheric trace gases.

Anthropogenic Aerosols Effects on Ice Clouds: A Review

Since the ability of anthropogenic aerosols to act as ice nucleation particles has been recognized, the effect of anthropogenic aerosols on ice clouds has attracted increasing attentions. In recent years, some progress has been made in investigating the effects of anthropogenic aerosols on ice clouds. In this paper, we briefly review the study on the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on ice nuclei, properties and radiative forcing of ice clouds. Anthropogenic aerosols can form ice nuclei through homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation. Convective strength can modulate the response of ice clouds to anthropogenic aerosols by affecting the nucleation activities. There have been large uncertainties in calculating the radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols on ice clouds in climate models. Further studies on the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on ice clouds are imperative to provide better parameterization schemes and reduce the uncertainties of aerosol indirect effects.

Diurnal Evolution of Cloud Water Responses to Aerosols

AbstractClouds play an essential role in the global energy budget, but the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on clouds is still poorly understood. We use 15‐min temporal resolution geostationary satellite data to study the temporal evolution of polluted cloud tracks detected in the European part of Russia. Previous analysis of polluted cloud tracks shows that cloud water response to aerosols is bidirectional. Here, we show that cloud water gradually increases in the afternoon for polluted clouds in some cases. Aerosol‐induced cloud thickening is much more likely in the case of thin unpolluted clouds. However, on average, there is less cloud water in the polluted clouds compared to the nearby unpolluted clouds. The temporal evolution of cloud thinning is not observed, and polluted clouds are thinner than the nearby unpolluted clouds since the early morning. The physical mechanisms leading to the observed changes and the influence of retrieval bias on the detected changes need further clarification. Our findings highlight the need to research the temporal evolution of cloud responses to aerosols to estimate the aerosol radiative forcing more accurately.

Determination of the copper isotope composition of seawater revisited: A case study from the Mediterranean Sea

A new technique for the determination of dissolved copper isotope composition (δ65Cu) of seawater was applied to examine copper sources and internal cycling in the Mediterranean Sea along the GEOTRACES GA04N transect. A succession of chelating resin with nitrilotriacetic acid functional groups and strong base anion exchange resin, together with optimization of the multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry set-up allowed to isolate copper from seawater matrix and to measure the 65Cu/63Cu ratios in seawater with an external precision of 0.06‰ (2 s.d.). This method was first applied for inter-comparison measurements to surface and deep waters sampled at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series station (BATS) in the North Atlantic Ocean during the GEOTRACES Intercalibration Cruise 1. Disparities in δ65Cu reported here and in the literature over these samples showed a need to investigate whether a new inter-comparison sample should be decided upon, or whether the use of UV-oxidation can also affect the measurement of δ65Cu. We also measured total dissolved Cu concentration ([dCu]T) and δ65Cu for 12 stations in the Mediterranean Sea. The δ65Cu distribution showed significant variations in the euphotic zone, at the Chl a maximum and at bottom depths. Copper isotope ratios ranged from +0.21‰ to +0.76‰ (±0.06‰, 2 s.d.), yielding an average of +0.51‰ (±0.20‰, 2 s.d.; n = 96) for the Mediterranean Sea. A strong zonation between natural aerosol deposition to the South and anthropogenic aerosol deposition to the North was seen in the sample set (Dulaquais et al. 2017; Gerringa et al. 2017; Rolison et al. 2015). Natural dust deposits seemed to draw δ65Cu toward lower values and deeper in the euphotic zone whereas the impact of anthropogenic aerosols seemed restricted to an increase in [dCu]T. At the Chl a maximum, δ65Cu showed significant increase which we attributed to scavenging on and/or uptake by phytoplankton. The isotope signature of Cu sources to the Mediterranean Sea was also investigated and we inferred a significant source of isotopically heavy Cu in the Gibraltar area, potentially originating from a release of Cu sulfide leached in the mining area of Southern Spain (i.e. Iberian Pyrite Belt) in rivers and transported to the Mediterranean Sea in surface by seasonal water mass circulation. Conversely, marine sediments appear to be a source of isotopically-light Cu to deep waters. This study provides new hints on the use of copper isotopes to study sources and sinks of Cu in seawater. No Impact of Anthropogenic Aerosols on Early 21st Century Global Temperature Trends in a Large Initial‐Condition Ensemble

AbstractAnthropogenic‐aerosol (AA) radiative forcing modulates multidecadal greenhouse radiative forcing. However, decadal climate responses to AA are poorly characterized given AA forcing uncertainty and internal climate variability. This motivates revisiting a recent claim that AA drove a negative trend in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and an associated cooling influence in the 10–15 years following the late‐1990's El Niño. The average of a 50‐member initial condition ensemble of the second generation Canadian Earth System Model version 2 that was forced only with AA does not exhibit the negative‐Pacific Decadal Oscillation/slowdown response. However, spurious responses of this kind, that are artifacts of subsetting the large ensemble (LE) in a manner consistent with published literature, can readily be found. This illustrates the caution needed in interpreting regional‐ and decadal‐scale responses to AA and suggests that improved characterization of model uncertainty in AA over the recent period is required.

Aerosol Properties Observed in the Subtropical North Pacific Boundary Layer

AbstractThe impact of anthropogenic aerosol on climate forcing remains uncertain largely due to inadequate representation of natural aerosols in climate models. The marine boundary layer (MBL) might serve as a model location to study natural aerosol processes. Yet source and sink mechanisms controlling the MBL aerosol number, size distribution, chemical composition, and hygroscopic properties remain poorly constrained. Here aerosol size distribution and water uptake measurements were made aboard the R/V Hi'ialakai from 27 June to 3 July 2016 in the subtropical North Pacific Ocean. Size distributions were predominantly bimodal with an average integrated number concentration of 197 ± 98 cm−3. Hygroscopic growth factors were measured using the tandem differential mobility analyzer technique for dry 48, 96, and 144 nm particles. Mode kappa values for these were 0.57 ± 0.12, 0.51 ± 0.09, and 0.52 ± 0.08, respectively. To better understand remote MBL aerosol sources, a new algorithm was developed which decomposes hygroscopicity distributions into three classes: carbon‐containing particles, sulfate‐like particles, and sodium‐containing particles. Results from this algorithm showed low and steady sodium‐containing particle concentrations while the sulfate‐like and carbon‐containing particle concentrations varied during the cruise. According to the classification scheme, carbon‐containing particles contributed at least 3–7%, sulfate‐like particles contributed at most 77–88% and sodium‐containing particles at least contributed 9–16% to the total aerosol number concentration. Size distribution and hygroscopicity data, in conjunction with air mass back trajectory analysis, suggested that the aerosol budget in the subtropical North Pacific MBL may be controlled by aerosol entrainment from the free troposphere.

Local and Remote Impacts of Aerosol Species on Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall in a GCM

Abstract The HadGEM2 AGCM is used to determine the most important anthropogenic aerosols in the Indian monsoon using experiments in which observed trends in individual aerosol species are imposed. Sulfur dioxide (SD) emissions are shown to impact rainfall more strongly than black carbon (BC) aerosols, causing reduced rainfall especially over northern India. Significant perturbations due to BC are not noted until its emissions are scaled up in a sensitivity test, resulting in rainfall increases over northern India due to the elevated heat pump mechanism, enhancing convection during the premonsoon, and bringing forward the monsoon onset. Second, the impact of anthropogenic aerosols is compared to that of increasing greenhouse-gas concentrations and observed sea surface temperature (SST) warming. The tropospheric temperature gradient driving the monsoon shows weakening when forced by either SD or imposed SST trends. However, the observed SST trend is dominated by warming in the deep tropics; when the component of SST trend related to aerosol emissions is removed, further warming is found in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere that tends to offset monsoon weakening. This suggests caution is needed when using SST forcing as a proxy for greenhouse warming. Finally, aerosol emissions are decomposed into those from the Indian region and those elsewhere in pairs of experiments with SD and BC. Both local and remote aerosol emissions are found to lead to rainfall changes over India; for SD, remote aerosols contribute around 75% of the rainfall decrease over India, while for BC the remote forcing is even more dominant.

Impact of anthropogenic aerosols from global, East Asian, and non-East Asian sources on East Asian summer monsoon system

The impact of the total effects due to anthropogenic aerosols from global, East Asian, and non-East Asian sources on East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) system is studied using an aerosol-climate online model BCC_AGCM2.0.1_CUACE/Aero. The results show that the summer mean net all-sky shortwave fluxes averaged over East Asian monsoon region (EAMR) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) and surface reduce by 4.8 and 5.0Wm−2, respectively, due to the increases of global aerosol emissions in 2000 relative to 1850. Changes in radiations and their resulting changes in heat and water transport and cloud fraction contribute together to the surface cooling over EAMR in summer. The increases in global anthropogenic aerosols lead to a decrease of 2.1K in summer mean surface temperature and an increase of 0.4hPa in summer mean surface pressure averaged over EAMR, respectively. It is shown that the changes in surface temperature and pressure are significantly larger over land than ocean, thus decreasing the contrast of land-sea surface temperature and pressure. This results in the marked anomalies of north and northeast winds over eastern and southern China and the surrounding oceans in summer, thereby weakening the EASM. The summer mean precipitation averaged over the EAMR reduces by 12%. The changes in non-East Asian aerosol emissions play a more important role in inducing the changes of local temperature and pressure, and thus significantly exacerbate the weakness of the EASM circulation due to local aerosol changes. The weakening of circulation due to both is comparable, and even the effect of non-local aerosols is larger in individual regions. The changes of local and non-local aerosols contribute comparably to the reductions in precipitation over oceans, whereas cause opposite changes over eastern China. Our results highlight the importance of aerosol changes outside East Asia in the impact of the changes of anthropogenic aerosols on EASM.

Technical Note: On the use of nudging for aerosol–climate model intercomparison studies

Abstract. Nudging as an assimilation technique has seen increased use in recent years in the development and evaluation of climate models. Constraining the simulated wind and temperature fields using global weather reanalysis facilitates more straightforward comparison between simulation and observation, and reduces uncertainties associated with natural variabilities of the large-scale circulation. On the other hand, the forcing introduced by nudging can be strong enough to change the basic characteristics of the model climate. In the paper we show that for the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5), due to the systematic temperature bias in the standard model and the sensitivity of simulated ice formation to anthropogenic aerosol concentration, nudging towards reanalysis results in substantial reductions in the ice cloud amount and the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on long-wave cloud forcing. In order to reduce discrepancies between the nudged and unconstrained simulations, and meanwhile take the advantages of nudging, two alternative experimentation methods are evaluated. The first one constrains only the horizontal winds. The second method nudges both winds and temperature, but replaces the long-term climatology of the reanalysis by that of the model. Results show that both methods lead to substantially improved agreement with the free-running model in terms of the top-of-atmosphere radiation budget and cloud ice amount. The wind-only nudging is more convenient to apply, and provides higher correlations of the wind fields, geopotential height and specific humidity between simulation and reanalysis. Results from both CAM5 and a second aerosol–climate model ECHAM6-HAM2 also indicate that compared to the wind-and-temperature nudging, constraining only winds leads to better agreement with the free-running model in terms of the estimated shortwave cloud forcing and the simulated convective activities. This suggests nudging the horizontal winds but not temperature is a good strategy for the investigation of aerosol indirect effects since it provides well-constrained meteorology without strongly perturbing the model's mean climate.

The impact of Asian and non-Asian anthropogenic aerosols on 20th century Asian summer monsoon

[1] Studies into the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on regional summer monsoon rainfall have focused on a black carbon‐induced enhancement and a sulfate‐induced suppression. The latter encompasses significant Asian and non‐Asian sources, but their relative roles in forcing historical global and regional monsoon trends are largely unexplored. Using targeted 20th century coupled climate simulations, designed to isolate the impact from anthropogenic aerosols, we show that Asian aerosols induce a weak suppression of global summer monsoon, confined to the East Asian region. The addition of non‐Asian aerosols generates an enhancement and broadening of cooler temperatures over Europe and Asia relative to the ambient oceans, supporting stronger northerly flows that further suppress Asian monsoon rainfall. Furthermore, atmospheric convection is directed away from the Asian monsoon regions, resulting in an equatorward shift in rainfall. Our results highlight the importance of the non‐Asian aerosols in exacerbating the impact of Asian aerosols on global monsoon rainfall, particularly across Asia. Citation: Cowan, T., and W. Retrieval of dust aerosols during night: improved assessment of long wave dust radiative forcing over Afro-Asian regions

Abstract. Several investigators in the past have used the radiance depression (with respect to clear-sky infrared radiance), resulting from the presence of mineral dust aerosols in the atmosphere, as an index of dust aerosol load in the atmosphere during local noon. Here, we have used a modified approach to retrieve dust index during night since assessment of diurnal average infrared dust forcing essentially requires information on dust aerosols during night. For this purpose, we used infrared radiance (10.5–12.5 μm), acquired from the METEOSAT-5 satellite (~ 5 km resolution). We found that the "dust index" algorithm, valid for daytime, will no longer hold during the night because dust is then hotter than the theoretical dust-free reference. Hence we followed a "minimum reference" approach instead of a conventional "maximum reference" approach. A detailed analysis suggests that the maximum dust load occurs during the daytime. Over the desert regions of India and Africa, maximum change in dust load is as much as a factor of four between day and night and factor of two variations are commonly observed. By realizing the consequent impact on long wave dust forcing, sensitivity studies were carried out, which indicate that utilizing day time data for estimating the diurnally averaged long-wave dust radiative forcing results in significant errors (as much as 50 to 70%). Annually and regionally averaged long wave dust radiative forcing (which account for the diurnal variation of dust) at the top of the atmosphere over Afro-Asian region is 2.6 ± 1.8 W m−2, which is 30 to 50% lower than those reported earlier. Our studies indicate that neglecting diurnal variation of dust while assessing its radiative impact leads to an overestimation of dust radiative forcing, which in turn result in underestimation of the radiative impact of anthropogenic aerosols.

From brightening to dimming in sunshine duration over the eastern and central Tibetan Plateau (1961–2005)

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) with an average elevation of over 4,000 m asl is the highest and most extensive highland in the world. We used monthly mean sunshine duration from the Chinese Meteorological Administration to examine the spatial and temporal variability of sunshine duration at 71 stations with elevations above 2,000 m asl in the eastern and central TP during the 1961–2005 period. The temporal evolution of the mean annual sunshine duration series shows a significant increase from 1961 to 1982 at a rate of 49.8 h/decade, followed by a decrease from 1983 to 2005 at a rate of −65.1 h/decade, with an overall significant decrease at a rate of −20.6 h/decade during the whole 1961–2005 period, which is mainly due to the summer and spring seasons. This confirms the evidence that sunshine duration in the TP ranges from brightening to dimming in accordance with sunshine duration trends in the rest of China. The surface solar radiation downwards from ERA-40 reanalysis data in the same region confirms the brightening/dimming phenomenon shown by the sunshine duration before/after the 1980s. Otherwise, additional climatic variables such as low cloud amount, total cloud amount, precipitation, relative humidity and water vapor pressure, in most cases, exhibit significant negative correlation with sunshine duration in the TP on an annual and seasonal basis before and after 1982, respectively. The trends of these variables suggest that changes in some of them might be related to the brightening and dimming detected with the use of sunshine duration measurements over the TP. We also hypothesize that the impact of anthropogenic aerosols upon the climatic variables analyzed cannot be rejected, especially in the significant increase in low cloud cover since approximately 1980.

Impact of anthropogenic aerosols on Indian summer monsoon

Using an interactive aerosol‐climate model we find that absorbing anthropogenic aerosols, whether coexisting with scattering aerosols or not, can significantly affect the Indian summer monsoon system. We also show that the influence is reflected in a perturbation to the moist static energy in the sub‐cloud layer, initiated as a heating by absorbing aerosols to the planetary boundary layer. The perturbation appears mostly over land, extending from just north of the Arabian Sea to northern India along the southern slope of the Tibetan Plateau. As a result, during the summer monsoon season, modeled convective precipitation experiences a clear northward shift, coincidently in general agreement with observed monsoon precipitation changes in recent decades particularly during the onset season. We demonstrate that the sub‐cloud layer moist static energy is a useful quantity for determining the impact of aerosols on the northward extent and to a certain degree the strength of monsoon convection.

Historical evolution of radiative forcing of climate

We have compiled the evolution of the radiative forcing for several mechanisms based on our radiative transfer models using a variety of information sources to establish time histories. The anthropogenic forcing mechanisms considered are well-mixed greenhouse gases, ozone, and tropospheric aerosols (direct and indirect effect). The natural forcing mechanisms taken into account are the radiative effects of solar irradiance variation and particles of volcanic origin. In general there has been an increase in the radiative forcing during the 20th century. The exception is a decline in the radiative forcing in the 1945–1970 period. We have found that the evolution of anthropogenic particle emissions in the same period may have been a major cause of this decline in the forcing. We have discussed uncertainties in the various forcings and their evolution. The uncertainties are large for many forcing mechanisms, especially the impact of anthropogenic aerosols. In particular the indirect effect of aerosols on clouds is difficult to quantify. Several evolutions of their effect may have been possible, strongly influencing the evolution of the total anthropogenic radiative forcing.

Scavenging of atmospheric constituents in mixed phase clouds at the high-alpine site jungfraujoch part I: Basic concept and aerosol scavenging by clouds

Extensive field experiments were performed in April/May 1992 and October/November 1993 in order to investigate the aerosol–cloud relationship at the high-alpine site Jungfraujoch, 3450 m asl. Aerosol and cloudwater samples were collected simultaneously and analyzed for the major water-soluble anions and cations. In addition, the cloud liquid water content (LWC) and the aerosol size distribution were measured. A nearly complete activation of particles with diameter d⩾0.2 μm was observed, independent of the number concentration. Since there was only a slight variability of the LWC, it was concluded that higher aerosol concentrations at high-alpine sites are associated with smaller droplet sizes. Long-term measurements of LWC and of the aerosol concentration suggested that this may be true throughout the year, giving additional evidence for a possible impact of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud albedo.
