Seven new Helicopsyche (Feropsyche) Johanson, 2002 from the Neotropical region and Nearctic Mexico (Insecta: Trichoptera: Helicopsychidae)

Seven new species of Helicopsyche (Feropsyche) Johanson 2002 (Helicopsychidae) are described from Mexico (H. curvipalpia new species), Panama (H. blantoni new species, H. chiriquensis new species, H. linguata new species, and H. sanblasensis new species), and Brazil (H. paprockii new species and H. cipoensis new species) based on adult material borrowed from the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution), Washington, D. C. and the Illinois Natural History Survey, Champaign, Illinois, USA. New records are given for H. sinuata Denning & Blickle from Mexico, and H. incisa Ross and H. woldai Johanson from Panama.

Fire Effects on Community Structure, Composition, and Diversity in a Dry Sandstone Barrens

Soc. 130:170-192. 2003. Fire effects on canopy, shrub/sapling, and ground-cover species composition, structure, and diversity patterns were examined following two burns in a dry sandstone barrens remnant in southern Illinois. Vegetation was monitored at a fire treatment site and a nearby fire-free control site for three years following the first fire and two years following the second fire. Fire effects were most pronounced in the ground-cover stratum and least in the tree stratum. At the fire treatment site, tree species richness was unchanged while tree density (stems 26 cm dbh) declined 10.6% from a baseline total of 945 stems/ha to 845 stems/ha. There was additional tree mortality the second growing season following each fire. Quercus stellata remained by far the most dominant species. Fire effects were limited to small-diameter trees ('15 cm dbh) while total tree basal area increased at the treatment site from 17.8 m2/ha to 18.22 m2. Stem density in the shrub/sapling stratum significantly declined immediately following each fire while recovery to preburn levels was underway in four years just prior to the second burn. After two burns, stem density was about 45% the baseline amount. In the ground-cover stratum there were significant increases in diversity, species richness, species density, and percent cover at the fire treatment site while at the control site these variables remained unchanged or slightly declined. Noteworthy differences occurred among C3 and C4 graminoid species as many C3 species (e.g., Dichanthelium spp., Carex spp.) increased greatly in frequency and percent cover with fire while C4 species (e.g., Schizachyrium scoparium, Sorghastrum nutans) had parallel decline in the treatment and control sites.

Winter Stoneflies of Illinois (Insecta: Plecoptera)

Winter stoneflies (Insecta: Plecoptera) are an aquatic group of insects whose adults emerge in IIlinois from late November to early April. Twenty-one species have been reported from Illinois. Extensive collections of winter stoneflies were made in Illinois during the 1920s and 1930s by Frison, the 1960s by Ross and “the winter stonefly club’, and the 1990s by Webb. These specimens are housed in the Insect Collection of the Illinois Natural History Survey and allowed for an evaluation of the current status of these species following a century of environmental change.Over the past century (1900-2000), the species diversity of winter stoneflies averaged 2.5 species per county with species reported from every county but 3 (Carroll, DuPage, Ford) and with 10 counties recording 5 or more species. Pope County (13 species) reported the greatest species diversity. During the recent resurvey (1976-2000), species diversity average 1.9 species per county withspecimens not collected in 11 counties, and only 3 counties (Hardin, Pope, and Saline) exhibited 5 or more species.Four species are considered extirpated from Illinois: Allocapnia illinoensis, Nemocapnia carolina, Paracapnia angulata, and Taeniopteryx parvula. Seven species were found to be common (known from more than 15 localities): Allocapnia forbesi, A. granulata, A. mystica, A. rickeri, A. vivipara, Taeniopteryx burksi, and T: nivalis. Four species are considered uncommon (known from 4—15localities): Allocapnia recta, Strophopteryx fasciata, Taeniopteryx metequi and Zealeuctra claasseni. Six species are considered rare (known from 1-3 localities): Allocapnia nivicola, A. smithi, Prostoia completa, Taeniopteryx lita, Zealeuctra fraxina, and Z. narfi. Significantly reduced patterns of distribution were noted in three species: A. granulata, A. mystica, and Strophopteryx fasciata. OnlyTaeniopteryx nivalis, previously rare, is now spreading its distribution across northern Illinois.There has been a modest decline during the past century in the diversity of stonefly species within various counties. Also, a trend was observed toward an increase in pollution-tolerant, “generalist” species with a decrease in pollution-sensitive, habitat “specialists.”

Comparing the Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera Specimen Databases at the Illinois Natural History Survey and Using Them to Document Changes in the Illinois Fauna

Abstract Databasing of all Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera specimens in the Illinois Natural History Survey Insect Collection has recently been completed. Both databases are Internet-searchable in a simplified format (http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/cbd/EPT/index.html). Analysis of the databases shows that the Plecoptera are at a much better level of determination than the Ephemeroptera, with 88% of the specimens determined to the species level. Only 22% of Ephemeroptera specimens have been determined to species. The Ephemeroptera collection is also much more narrow in geographic scope, with 74% of determined specimens from Illinois. In contrast, only 30% of determined Plecoptera specimens are from Illinois, with most of the remainder being from across the United States. Four new Illinois records were uncovered in the Ephemeroptera database: Caenis diminuta Walker, C. punctata McDunnough, Pseudocloeon ephippiatum (Traver), and Serratella deficiens (Morgan). A tool for multipurpose use of online flora and fauna: The Biological Information Browsing Environment, BIBE

) is a facility to help novices and experts find information about plants and animals in digital collections. The Project is funded by the National Science Foundation Biological Databases and Informatics Program and is a collaboration between the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, Illinois Natural History Survey, Missouri Botanical Garden, Flora of North America Project at the Harvard Herbarium, and Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The objectives of the Project are to facilitate access to online flora and fauna by both novices and experts through enhanced indexing, searching, and visualization techniques. Specific search facility and content will be added to help users with different levels of domain knowledge identify species based on the augmentation of professionally developed taxonomic treatments or species descriptions. This is a novel use of taxonomic descriptions. In the course of development the system will undergo a series of qualitative and quantitative evaluations and re-designs by several communities of users, including professional entomologists and botanists as well as citizen scientists performing biodiversity surveys.

Local knowledge, environmental politics, and the founding of ecology in the United States. Stephen Forbes and "The Lake as a Microcosm" (1887).

Stephen Forbes's "The Lake as a Microcosm" is one of the founding documents of the science of ecology in the United States. By tracing the connections between scientists and local fishermen underlying the research on floodplain lakes presented in "The Lake as a Microcosm," this essay shows how the birth of ecology was tied to local knowledge and the local politics of environmental transformation. Forbes and the other scientists of the Illinois Natural History Survey relied on fishermen for manual labor, expertise in catching fish, and knowledge of the natural history of the fishes. As Forbes and his colleagues worked in close contact with fishermen, they also adopted many of their political concerns over the privatization of the floodplain and became politically active in supporting their interests. The close connection between scientists and local knowledge forced the ecologists to reframe the boundaries of ecology as objective or political, pure or applied, local or scientific.

Application of an index of biological integrity (IBI) to fish assemblages of the rivers Khan and Kshipra (Madhya Pradesh), India

1. A multimetric index of fish assemblage integrity was developed and similarity analyses were conducted on fish species in two central Indian rivers and the effects of distance from municipal and industrial effluents on those indices then evaluated.2. Five metrics from Karr et al. (1986 , Illinois Natural History Survey Special Publication 5, Urbana, IL) were adopted: intolerant species richness, % omnivorous individuals, % top carnivore individuals, total number of individuals and % individuals with anomalies. Seven new metrics (native species richness, native family richness, benthic species richness, water column species richness, % non‐native individuals, % tolerant individuals and % herbivorous individuals) were added.3. Non‐native individuals represented 1–55% of the assemblages at sampled sites which held fish.4. Fish were present at eleven sites and not collected at two sites, despite heavy metal concentrations exceeding U.S. Environmental Protection Agency acute criteria at all sites.5. Two types of metric scoring were examined. The traditional 5–3–1 method showed the same pattern as continuous scoring from 0 to 10, but produced a higher integrity class at one site.6. Scores on our modified index of fish assemblage integrity increased with distance downstream from a major effluent source in each river. Jaccard similarity scores between the least disturbed downstream site and all other sites decreased with increasing distance and disturbance.7. It was concluded that Karr’s original index and its theoretical foundations are easily adaptable, even to an ichthyofauna containing no species, and only two families (Cyprinidae, Poeciliidae), in common with the midwestern United States.

Annotated Catalog of Type Specimens in the Illinois Natural History Survey Fish Collection

The Fish Collection of the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) dates back to the late 1800s and the extensive surveys of Illinois fishes led by Dr. Stephen A. Forbes, director of the Survey's predecessor, the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History (ISLNH). From 1876 to 1903 Forbes, assisted by his esteemed colleague Robert E. Richardson and numerous field and laboratory personnel, collected and preserved over 200,000 specimens from more than 450 localities distributed in 93 of the 102 counties of Illinois. During this time, the ISLNH Collection served as the basis for several catalogs of Illinois fishes (Nelson 1876; Jordan 1878a; Forbes 1884; Large 1903), and provided material for the description of at least 25 species. This work culminated in the classic Fishes of Illinois written by Forbes and Richardson, published by the Survey in 1909 and reprinted in 1920 (although no publication date is given for the original volume, H.C. Oesterling, former INHS editor, lists the date as 1909 in Howard 1932:46). Accompanied by a separate atlas of distribution maps of 98 species, this comprehensive treatment of the state's ichthyofauna still is recognized as one of the finest publications on fishes. The INHS Fish Collection was expanded by Dr. Philip W. Smith, who worked as a systematic biologist at the Survey from 1942 until his retirement in 1979 (Burr and Page 1987). Over a period of 1 1 years from 1962 to 1972, Smith assembled a large collection of fishes from Illinois and neighboring states. The ichthyological surveys conducted by Smith, his students, and INHS staff led to the publication of a second Fishes of Illinois (Smith 1979). Smith's monograph provided identification keys, information on the ecology and taxonomy of Illinois fishes, and detailed distribution maps that documented changes in the state's fish fauna that had occurred since the survey of Forbes and Richardson. The size and geographic scope of the INHS collection have been considerably expanded in the past three decades; the collection now contains about 7 1 1 ,000 cataloged specimens (over 7 1 ,000 lots) of more than 1,800 species. A recent literature survey identified over 250 publications citing the use of INHS specimens over the past 40 years. Included are two publications that have greatly advanced both the professional and popular understanding of North American fishes: the Handbook of Darters (Page 1983) and A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of North America North of Mexico (Page and Burr 1991).

Dormancy in Invertebrates

The ability to survive in a dormant state is a widespread, yet unevenly distributed feature among invertebrates. Organisms belonging to classes and phyla that include fresh-water or terrestrial representatives are more likely to possess a dormant stage than those in groups that are exclusively marine. Moreover, within taxa where has evolved, it is more common among fresh-water and terrestrial species than in marine species. This correlation between and habitat across 29 free-living invertebrate phyla raises the question of cause and effect. Are dormant stages more commnon in fresh-water and terrestrial habitats because there is greater selection for in those environments, or is a prerequisite for the successful invasion of non-marine systems? The mechanism of varies among species and ranges from a specialized diapausing embryo to a quiescent adult. Dormancy has most likely arisen multiple times in invertebrate life histories, both within and between phyla. Although may facilitate the invasion of fresh-water and terrestrial habitats, it is not always a requirement: many non-marine species do not exhibit dormancy. Additional key words: diapause, quiescence, life history, fresh-water, marine All natural environments vary, and organisms may occasionally experience conditions that are limiting for growth, survival, or reproduction. The form and nature of this variability differ among habitats, however, and this has led to the evolution of a wide array of life histories (reviewed by Roff 1992; Stearns 1992). For example, some species are iteroparous and offset the negative effects of temporal variation with long-lived adults that reproduce multiple times (Murphy 1968; Goodman 1984). Alternatively, other organisms avoid deleterious environmental conditions with reliable migration (Dingle 1978; Levin et al. 1984; Wiener & Tuljapurkar 1994). However, many species without either of these traits persist in variable environments. Often, these taxa inhabit relatively isolated, transient systems that can support life only for a fraction of the year (e.g., arctic tundra, deserts, temporary ponds). When organisms cannot migrate away from declining environmental conditions, and active adults cannot survive, the only viable option is persistence through dormancy. Dormancy has evolved in numerous bacterial, fungal, protist, plant, and animal species, but is completely unknown in many groups. E-mail: caceres@mail.inhs.uiuc.edu in some type of metabolic and/or developmental depression, the term dormancy actually encompasses a wide range of physiological states (see Hand 1991). Therefore, the form and duration of the dormant state vary widely among taxa. Whereas some species remain dormant only as long as conditions are unfavorable, others remain dormant for time periods much longer than the unfavorable environmental conditions, in :some cases for a century or more (Harper & White 1974; Henis 1987; Hairston et al. 1995; Caiceres 1997). ]Dormancy that extends beyond the duration of the environmental hardship introduces potential costs and benefits. When is not terminated upon the return of favorable conditions, there is the potential cost of lost reproduction. However, when the dormant prcpagules from a single cohort continue to introduce recruits into the active population for several years, populations of short-lived adults can sample different environments much in the same way as a long-lived iteroparous species (Seger & Brockmann 1987). Thus, overlapping generations are established in populations that might otherwise consist of discrete cohorts (Templeton & Levin 1979). ]In theory, the evolution of prolonged should be an alternative to either iteroparity or dispersal (Venable & Lawlor 1980; Levin et al. 1984; Rees 1994). Effects of Forest Patch Size on Nesting Success of Wood Thrushes

-Declines of many forest-dwelling Neotropical migrants have been attributed, in part, to fragmentation of forest habitat on the breeding grounds in North America. During 1990-1991, we determined reproductive success of Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) nesting within contiguous forest habitat (>10,000 ha) and in nine forest fragments ranging in size from 9.2 to 126.5 ha in Berks County, Pennsylvania. We located 171 Wood Thrush nests. Nesting success differed significantly among forest size categories, with 86% of the nests successful in contiguous forest, 72% successful in large fragments (>100 ha), and 43% successful in small fragments (<80 ha). The variable that best predicted nest survival was forest area (R2 = 0.86). Rates of predation differed significantly among forest size categories, and predation was the primary cause of nesting failure. We found 56% of the nests in small fragments were lost to predators as compared to 22% in large fragments and 10% within the contiguous forest. Visitation by mammalian predators to scent posts was significantly different between small and large forest sites (41 vs. 14%, respectively), and relative abundance of avian nest predators was significantly higher in small forest fragments than in the large forest sites (x = 1.04 vs. 0.41 birds per census point). Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) parasitized 9% of the nests. Rates of brood parasitism did not differ significantly among forest size categories and had little influence on nesting success. Our results suggest that reproductive success of Wood Thrushes nesting within contiguous forest is high and that severe reproductive dysfunction as a result of high rates of nest predation is an important consequence of forest fragmentation. MANY FOREST-DWELLING NEOTROPICAL migrant songbirds have undergone population declines in eastern deciduous forests of North America (Robbins et al. 1989a, Askins et al. 1990). Most declining forest species are found less commonly than expected in small areas of forest than in large (area sensitive), and some of these songbirds have decreased in abundance or disappeared completely from small forest patches (Ambuel and Temple 1983, Blake and Karr 1984, Askins et al. 1987). Because forest fragmentation results in smaller forest patches or fragments separated from each other by nonforest habitat, these declines have been attributed, in part, to fragmentation of forest habitat in North America (Robbins 1979, Askins et al. 1990). Numerous hypotheses have been proposed to explain why forest-dwelling Neotropical migrants decrease in abundance or disappear from small forest patches (Askins et al. 1990). Mammalian nest predators such as eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) and raccoons (Procyon lotor; Bider 1968, Forsyth and Smith 1973) tend to be more abundant along the forest edge than in the forest interior. Whitcomb et al. (1981) suggested that avian nest predators, such as Blue Jays (Cyanocitta cristata) and American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), show a similar pattern. The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothus ater), a brood parasite, also is more abundant along edges (Brittingham and Temple 1983). In addition, rates of both nest depredation and brood parasitism are higher near forest edges than within the forest interior (Gates and Gysel 1978, Chasko and Gates 1982, Brittingham and Temple 1983, Temple and Cary 1988). Consequently, one hypothesis is that forest birds decline in number in small forest patches as a result of poor reproductive success due to high rates of predation on eggs and nestlings, and to brood parasitism (Brittingham and Temple 1983, Wilcove 1985, Askins et al. 1990). Experiments with artificial nests indicate that nest predation is more frequent in small forest patches than within extensive areas of forest, thus supporting this hypothesis (Wilcove 1985,

George C. Decker

George C. Decker, 92, died 23 May 1993, in Miami, FL. He was a Miami resident for the past 28 years. He was born 5 September 1900, at Elkton, MI, attended secondary schools in the “thumb” section of Michigan and received a B.S. (1924), M.S. (1927), and Ph.D. (1930) at Iowa State University. From 1925-1926, he served as research entomologist with the Georgia Plant Board. He joined the staff of the Iowa Agricultura Experiment Station as research assistant, 1926-1935, assistant professor, 1935-1938, and associate professor, 1938-1944. While on leave of absence in 1938, he served as general supervisor of the Grasshopper Control Program for the USDA Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. From 1944 to 1965, he was entomologist and head, Section of Economic Entomology, Illinois Natural History Survey and professor of Entomology, University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. He retired in July, 1965.

What really impresses me is to see the width of the floodplain like this, said Farabee, who coordinates the Missouri Department of Conservation's research and management programs along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. I see quite a few nursery areas off to the sides where fish are feeding. We're going to see production that we haven't seen on the river in 50 years. While most people in the region, including some on his staff, struggled with flood damage to human interests, Chuck Theiling, a river ecologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey, launched an intensive research project. At the height of the flood, he was studying littoral zone productivity on the Illinois River north of where it meets the Mississippi. Bob Hrabik of the Missouri Department of Conservation, who like Theiling runs a long-term monitoring station, also was conducting productivity studies 170 miles downstream on the Mississippi, near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This is a great opportunity to determine exactly what happens during a large disturbance like this, Hrabik says. We've long made the assumption that fish go into the shallow areas, that they're spawning out there, and that productivity generally goes way up. But nobody ever really measured it. The Continuing Population Decline of Torreya taxifolia Arn.

Torrey Bot. Club 120: 275-286. 1993.-Torreya taxifolia is a federally endangered dioecious conifer endemic to ravine bluffs along the east side of the Apalachicola River in Gadsden and Liberty Counties, Florida and Decatur County, Georgia (plus one outlying population in Jackson County, Florida). Torreya taxifolia experienced a catastrophic population decline, presumably fungal in origin, in the late 1950's. Within 10 years virtually no adults remained in the wild, a situation that persists to the present. Size measurements of trees indicate that the mean length of the longest stem is less than one meter. In a census population of over 100 trees, 10% died in four years, mostly from small size classes. Extension of terminal buds along the primary stem was infrequent, with only 47% of all trees experiencing any growth in length during the four year census period. With 32% of all trees losing their primary stem during the census interval, the mean size of individuals within the population is decreasing. Most individuals are multi-stemmed and continue to carry symptoms of disease. Although no causative agent for the decline has been identified, the most prevalent symptoms of disease are needle spots, needle necrosis and stem cankers. Growth fate does not appear to be strongly related to habitat or the incidence of disease symptoms, although stem mortality was higher among trees with heavy foliar pathogen loads. With no sexually mature trees and no seed production, this species faces continued decline.

Catalog of Types of the Illinois Natural History Survey Mycological Collections (ILLS)

The Survey's mycological collection now contains approximately 300 type specimens, 800 Myxomycetes, 1,200 lower fungi, 10.000 Ascomycetes, 13,200 Fungi Imperfecti, 17,000 Basidiomycetes. and 5.000 lichens, for a total of 47.500 specimens. This catalog provides information for each type specimen on the binomial, the full name and initials of the authorities, the place of publication, the category of type, substrate or host, locality data, date of collection, collector, and accession number. The categories of type specimens follow the Botanical Code (Grueter et al. 1988. Article 7).
