Effect of Solid Waste Disposal on Chemical Quality of Groundwater in Ife North Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria: A GIS-Based Assessment

Indiscriminate waste disposal is a major environmental challenge in developing countries, especially as thewastes often end up downstream. The present study investigated the vulnerability of selected groundwatersources in semi-rural communities in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria, tocontamination by adjacent waste dumpsites. The specific objective was to assess the chemical quality of thegroundwater in the area. Data used were results of the laboratory investigation of selected water samplesfrom sampled groundwater sources and information about the uses of the groundwater by the residents. Theparameters pH, conductivity, and TDS were assessed in situ and chemical parameters such as Lead, Iron,Copper and Sulphate were assessed in the laboratory. Results showed that the groundwater sources close tothe dumpsites were more contaminated than the sources farther from the dumpsites. At distances less than50m to the dumpsites, the concentration of the chemical metals did not meet the WHO standard, however, itdecreased with distance from the dumpsite. For instance, although sulphate concentration was below therecommended maximum, sulphate concentration decreased with distance from the dumpsite. The studyconcluded that groundwater sources around dumpsites were contaminated and unfit for potable use in thearea.

A Geo-Statistical Analysis of the Impact of Ecological and Environmental Risks on Epidemiology in the South-west, Nigeria

Introduction: The probability of contamination is frequently elevated in scenarios where a well and pit latrine coexist, or in situations where heavy rain causes the overflow of open excreta dumps, which in turn flush into wells and surface water. Many possible negative health effects might arise from exposure to various ecological and biological agents in the environment. Therefore, there is a need to examine the risk of disease transmission in Ife North Local Government Area (LGA) of Osun state, using epidemiological, environmental, and ecological factors.
 Materials and Methods: Geostatistical analysis was used to examine the epidemiological risk, based on various environmental, biological, and ecological variables. The technique employed demonstrated the complexity and multiple parameters that raise the probability of an epidemic. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine whether or not the data were normally distributed. Fuzzy logic, correlation, and spline surface interpolation analysis were conducted using ArcGIS 10.3 and ENVI 5.0 software. Three levels of epidemic risk were used to construct the disease surveillance and projection maps.
 Results: According to the final susceptibility map, 8.08 km2 of 460.12 km2 of the research area were considered to be at very low risk for an epidemic, followed by 364.98km2 of low risk and 87.06km2 of moderate risk areas, with percentages of 1.75%, 79.32%, and 18.92%, respectively.
 Conclusion: A very substantial correlation was observed between biological and ecological components and water-borne diseases. It is, therefore, advised that all water sources be treated before consumption, and community involvement be encouraged in environmental sanitation programs.

The study assessed women's involvement in palm oil processing in Ife North Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 120 women palm oil processors. Primary data collected with the aid of wellstructured interview schedule were subjected to frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Chi-square analysis. The results reveal that majority (73.3%) of the palm oil processors were married, with the mean age of 50.2±15.173 years and years of palm oil processing experience averaged 24.713+13.670. Oil drying, x̅=3.87, ranked 1st of all the processing activities the respondents were involved in. Close to half (47.5%) of the women palm oil processors were at a medium level of involvement. High cost of labour and transportation ranked 1st with a weighted mean score of x̅=3.04 of all the constraints. There was significant association between age (ch2=18.730, p=0.001), marital status (ch2=15.663, p=0.047), primary occupation (ch2=20.207, p=0.003), level of education (ch2=15.821, p=0.045), experience (ch2=16.607, p=0.034) and involvement in palm oil processing. The study concluded that there was medium level of involvement in palm oil processing among the women. It was recommended that governmental and non-governmental agricultural agencies should introduce modern method of palm oil processing to the women palm oil processors in the study area.

Assessment of adoption of improved processing techniques among palm oil processors in ife north local government area, osun state, nigeria

The study was carried out to assess the adoption of improved processing techniques among palm oil processors in Ife North local government area of Osun state, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 120 respondents from the study area and data was collected through a well-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The result shows that majority of the respondents (74.2%) are female, 42.5% are between the age range of 31-40 and 54.2% are married. The result also shows that some improved techniques have been introduced to the farmers while some have not been introduced to them. A large number of the respondents have access to information mostly from neighborhood farmers, but there was variation in their level of adoption. Majority (75.8%) adopted hydraulic presser which is the highest technology adopted while Malaysian knife have not been adopted by 100% of the respondent. There was high level of challenges faced by the processors in the study area. Therefore it is recommended that more awareness and sensitization on improved processing technique should be given to palm oil processors and also the materials should be constructed by local crude and less sophisticated materials that can be constructed and repaired locally

Potential Benefits of Indigenous Earth as Building Materials for Shelter Provision in Socio Economy Development in Nigeria: A Case Study of Origbo Communities in Osun State South West of Nigeria

Improved indigenous shelter performance play an important role in quality of living and socio-economic activities. Finding support that substandard shelter situated at the rural area encourages rural urban drift and discourages local industrial developments, this generated unemployment problem. Interaction with rural dweller reveal that the quality of life developments is affected because of appreciable rural development need, such as quality shelter system that will enhance quality of living, education system, health system and industrial development. This research focuses on how indigenous earth as building material can be adopted and improved to provide adequate and appropriate building performance for a variety of purpose that will enhance socio economy development. Data were obtained through the stratification of the study area which comprises of seven communities of Origbo in Ife North Local Government area of Osun state south Nigeria, data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis variance (ANOV) to determine the relationship of earth as building material and potential benefits that associated with it which include cost, affordability and availability.The research concludes, which indicates the significance of shelter to improve both local and national economy and development of capacity of socio-economic base of the nation especially in the poorly developed economic communities

Effects of Aquacultural Practices on the Sediment Characteristics of Certain Type of Earthen Fishponds

The effect of aquacultural practices on the bottom sediment quality of six selected earthen fishponds in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State was investigated for a period of two years. The fishponds were grouped with regard to fertilization practice and water flowage regime into three sets comprising two fertilized non-flow-through ponds (FNF); two fertilized flow-through ponds (FF) and two unfertilized flow-through ponds (NFF). The investigated sediment quality parameters include color and textural composition, salinity parameters, major ions, organic parameters and heavy metals using standard methods. The parameters were not statistically different (P > 0.05) for the three sets of fishponds with the exception of calcium which was significantly available in the fertilized flow-through pond. The fertilized ponds were however richer in nutrient and of better drainage quality than the unfertilized ponds. The parameters with higher mean in the fertilized ponds (FNF and FF) were 16% higher on average and flow-affected parameters were 67% higher on average in the flow-through ponds (FF and NFF), of which 7.00-fold higher lead concentration contributed most to this situation. Of these parameters, cations, anions, micronutrients were found to be of highest mean concentration in fertilized flow-through ponds. However, the presence of significant levels of calcium ions as well as minimal accumulation of clay, silt and nutrients in fertilized flow ponds made this fish culture method most suitable.

OCCURRENCE AND PATTERN OF DISABILITY IN RURAL SETTINGS IN NIGERIA

Background and objectives: Disability is a major public health problem in the developing countries. Yet studies and census reports from developing countries provide insufficient information on disability profiles. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess occurrence, patterns and socio-demographic correlates of disability in selected rural settings in Nigeria. Materials and methods: This house to house cross-sectional survey was conducted among 200 residents in Moro and Edunabon communities in Ife North Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. Disability was classified according to the World Health Organization International classification with criteria based on functional limitation. Households were considered as the Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) in this study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the analysis of the data obtained. The alpha level was set at p< 0.05. Results: The total occurrence of disability was 16%. Visual disability was the most prevalent (6%) and it was significantly associated with age (χ2=11.702; p= 0.010). The recorded locomotor, mental, speech and hearing disabilities constituted 5%, 2%, 1% and 2% respectively of the total population surveyed. The overall occurrence was found to be higher among males and the middle-aged group (31-50) and significantly correlated with low socioeconomic status. There was a significant association between visual impairment and age (χ 2=11.702; p= 0.010); hearing disability and marital status (χ2=21.747; p= 0.003); as well as mental disability and marital status (χ2=21.747; p= 0.003). Conclusion: A high occurrence of disability was identified among rural residents in Nigeria, especially among males, those with low socio-economic status, those educated up to secondary school, unemployed and married partners. Visual disability, followed by locomotor disability, is the most common type. It is related to age, while marital status significantly correlates with hearing and mental disability.

Evaluation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Health Risk Assessment of Surface Water and Sediments of River Sasa, Ife North Local Government Area, Nigeria

This study determined the extent of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination of the surface water and sediments collected during the dry and wet seasons from River Sasa in Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria. This was with a view to establishing the pollution status of the studied surface water with PAHs and its safety for drinking. The health risk assessment of the water samples was also established. Water and sediment samples were collected from three sampling points along River Sasa and analysed using standard techniques. Concentration of PAHs in the samples were determined using GC-FID. Fluoranthene (a 4-ring PAH) was the most dominant congener in the sediment for dry (454.35 ng/g) and wet (490.27 ng/g) seasons, while the highest concentrations in water samples for dry and wet seasons respectively were phenanthrene (3-ring) (349.47 ng/L) and fluoranthene (4-ring) (100.68 ng/L). The total PAHs concentrations in the surface water ranging from 777.68 to 2431.39 ng/L (dry season) were significantly greater than 295.46 to 521.16 ng/L (wet season). Sediment samples also showed higher concentrations of PAHs in the dry season with overall mean 3463.52 ± 785.72 ng/g compared to 3247 ± 2427.57 ng/g (wet season). Higher mean concentration of PAHs recorded in the water and sediment samples for dry season was attributed to pyrolytic (or pyrogenic) sources. The study concluded that River Sasa was polluted with PAHs to a level that made the water not safe for drinking and other domestic activities. The health risk assessment results indicated that continuous uses of the surface water over a prolonged period of time could result in grave health challenges such as cancer among the people of the community.

Vulnerability to food insecurity among rural households in Sub-Saharan Africa

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that affect food shocks and how vulnerable are people to food shocks using Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State Nigeria as a case study. &#x0D; Methodology / approach. Data were collected from 150 households through multistage sampling from ten political wards in Ife North Local Government Area. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the socio-economic characteristics and profile food shocks experienced and identify the coping strategies employed among rural households in the study area. &#x0D; Results. The study revealed that majority of the household age range of between 40 to 59 (62.0 %), married (77.3 %). Also, majority of the respondent own their farm (85.3 %). The result shows that the shocks that are prevalent in the study area include high price of input (66.6 %), loss of close relatives (72.0 %), low agricultural production (64.6 %), pest and disease (66.6 %), hash economic time (54.0%), and Ill health (50%). The other shocks experienced having low prevalence among households are non-availability of labour (23.4 %), accident (32.0 %), flood (31.4%), and theft (35.4 %).&#x0D; Originality / scientific novelty. The age categorization of vulnerability to food insecurity indicates that household heads aged 80 and above are more vulnerable to food insecurity (0.7158) followed by those within age 21–39 (0.6895). Also, the distribution of household head by their educational level shows that the household that have no formal education (0.5123) are more vulnerable to food insecurity.&#x0D; Practical value / implications. The implication of this study is that Government should regulate price fluctuation of agricultural goods and inputs. The use of pesticides should be encouraged to prevent pests and disease prevalence. Also, agricultural credit should be made available to farmers.

Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon levels of groundwater in Ife north local government area of Osun state, Nigeria.

This study determined the presence and levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) of groundwater in Moro, Edun-Abon, Yakoyo and Ipetumodu communities in Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State. This was with a view to create public awareness about the safety of groundwater as a source for domestic purposes (e.g., drinking, cooking etc.) in non-industrial area. Water samples were collected on seasonal basis, comprising of three months (August–October) in the wet season and three months (December–February) in the dry season. The PAHs in the water samples were extracted with n-hexane using liquid–liquid extraction method, while their qualitative identifications and quantitative estimations were carried out with the use of gas chromatography. Levels of PAHs detected showed predominance of light PAHs (less than four fused rings) for both wet and the dry seasons. Higher concentrations of PAHs were recorded during the wet season than the dry season. The study concluded that the groundwater in the communities was contaminated with light PAHs and the total PAHs in this area exceeded the maximum permissible limit of 10 μg L−1 recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for safety of groundwater.

Investigation of Some Moulding Properties of a Nigerian Clay-Bonded Sand

Abstract Moulding properties of Isasa River Sand bonded with Ipetumodu clay (Ife-North Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria) were investigated. American Foundry men Society (AFS) standard cylindrical specimens 50mm diameter and 50mm in height were prepared from various sand and clay ratios (between 18% and 32%) with 15% water content. The stress-strain curves were generated from a universal strength testing machine. A flow factor was calculated from the inclination of the falling slope beyond the maximum compressive strength. The result shows that the flowability of the samples increases from 18% to 26% clay content, its maximum value was attained at 26% and then it decreases from 30% to 32% clay content. The green compressive strength, dry compressive strength and air permeability values obtained from the mould samples were in accordance with standard values used in foundry practice. The x-ray diffraction test shows that the sand contains silicon oxide (SiO2), Aluminium oxide (Al2O3), and Aluminium silicate (Al6Si2O13). The mould samples were heated to a temperature of 1200 °C to determine the sintering temperature; fussion did not take place at this temperature. The results showed that the sand and clay mixture can be used to cast ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.

Moral Intelligence: An Antidote to Examination Malpractices in Nigerian Schools

Moral intelligence is the capacity to apply moral principles to one's own values, goals and actions (or the ability to see what is right and integrate it into one's life and actions) It is considered as the individual capacity to understand right from wrong, to have strong ethical convictions and to act on them to behave in the right and honourable. This study examined the level of moral intelligence among senior secondary school students in Osun State. It also investigated whether there is a relationship between moral intelligence and students' perception of examination malpractice as well as examined the influence of variables such as students' gender and family structure on their moral intelligence. The study adopted survey method. The sample size was 240 Senior Secondary School class two students (Mean Age =15.62, SD =1.26)in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun state, Nigeria . Two instruments were used to collect data for the study. They were: Students' Moral Intelligence questionnaire adapted from Moral Competency Inventory (MCI) by Martin and Austin (2008) and Students Perceptions of Examination Malpractice in the Society (SPEM) which was adapted from Ejide (2005). Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Test, t-test and ANOVA. The results showed that 2.6% of the students had low level of moral intelligence, 12.6% of them had moderate level, 38.7% of them had high level while 46.1% of the students had very high level of moral intelligence. Result also showed that moral intelligence significantly correlated with students' perception of examination malpractices (N = 230, r = -.371 p < 0.05). Also, significant difference were found in male (M=86.27, SD=14.144) and female students (M= 80.87, SD= 16.61; t (228) = 2.637, p =.009) moral intelligence while there was also a statistically significant difference at the p < .05 level in moral intelligence scores for students under the five different living arrangement: F (4, 221) = 3.90, p =.004. The result of Post-hoc comparisons using the Turkey HSD test indicated that the mean score for students living with mother only (M=77.18, SD=19.81) was significantly different from those living with father and mother together (M=85.89, SD=14.39). Mean score for students living with father only (M=73.69, SD=18.79) was significantly different from those living with father and mother together (M=85.89, SD=14.39). It therefore concludes that moral intelligence enhancement training could have positive and an enduring impact on their decision making process regarding involvement in examination malpractices.

PS-010a Effect Of Training Programme On High School Teachers’ Knowledge And Attitude Towards Adolescent Reproductive Health Education In Rural Schools In Ile-ife, Sw Nigeria

Aims Adolescents in Nigeria as in other Countries of the world are facing many reproductive Health problems nowadays which includes high rate of risky sexual activities, unintended pregnancy, abortion and STIs/HIV/AIDS. To address these problems, constant suggestions and recommendations have been made for the introduction of compulsory adolescent reproductive health education (ARHE) at all levels of educational institutions in Nigeria. Previous studies in Nigeria showed that teachers themselves had poor knowledge of and negative attitude towards ARHE. This study assessed the effect of training programme on teachers’ knowledge and attitude towards ARHE in five randomly selected rural schools in Ife- North local government area (IFLGA), SW Nigeria. Methods All the 84 teachers in the selected schools in the LGA were voluntarily recruited for the study. They (84 Teachers) were all given training in ARHE for one month. Their knowledge and attitude towards ARHE was assessed pre- and post- training programme. Results The results showed a significant increase in percentage of those who had good knowledge in general areas of ARHE at post- training assessment compared with pre- training assessment (from 14.3% to 53.6%, p = 0.0001). Also, pre-post attitudinal disposition assessments showed that there was an increase in percentage of those who were favourably disposed to the teaching of ARHE in Nigeria Schools at post- training assessment (from 17.9% to 45.2%, p = 0011). Conclusions The study suggests that teachers should be equipped in handling the teaching of ARHE in Nigeria schools.

Effect of Computer-Use in Teaching on Acquisition of English Language Skills among Secondary School Students in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State

The paper examined the pattern of English language teaching in the secondary schools in Osun State. It also assessed the impact of the use of computer in teaching the subject on the acquisition of English language skills among students. A total of 150 students were involved in the study. This sample was drawn from three secondary schools in Ife North Local Government Area of the State in southwestern Nigeria. The schools were split into two groups with one group exposed to the use of computer as the experimental group and the other as the control group. An inventory to determine the effect of the computer use was employed to collect data. The study found out that the common pattern of English language teaching in secondary schools in Osun State was the conventional chalk and talk approach. It also found out that the use of computer in teaching English language brought significant improvement in students’ learning of the subject. The study concluded that the use of computer in teaching provides an avenue to enhance students’ learning of English language. DOI: 10.5901/jesr.2014.v4n6p443

Prevalence and pattern of overweight and obesity in three rural communities in southwest Nigeria.

BackgroundLimited data exist on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Nigerian adult rural population. This study therefore assessed the prevalence and pattern of overweight and obesity in adults in three rural communities of the Ife North Local Government Area, Nigeria.Materials and methodsA total of 777 adults between 20 and 90 years of age were recruited into this cross-sectional study, which was performed over a 6-month period using a multistage proportional stratified random sampling technique. Sociodemographic data and anthropometric variables were obtained.ResultsA total of 385 (49.5%) men and 395 (50.5%) women participated in the study. The mean age and body mass index of the participants were 36.3±14.3 years and 23.53±4.6 kg/m2, respectively. The overall crude prevalence of overweight and obesity in the total population were 20.8% and 8.4%, respectively. Obesity increased across the age gradient, peaking in the 51- to 60-year age-group in men and women. Among the overweight and obese subjects (n=227), 70.9% of them were overweight and the remaining 29.1% were obese, with class I obesity accounting for 20.7% of these overweight and obese subjects.ConclusionThe prevalence of overweight and obesity in these communities was 20.8% and 8.4% respectively, indicating a trend towards increased prevalence. Class I obesity is the most common obesity pattern, and obesity increased across the age gradient, peaking in the 51- to 60-year age-group. There is a need for regular community education on healthy lifestyles, and regular health screening to control the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity, as well as to prevent or reduce the risk of obesity comorbidities in these communities.

Prevalence of hypertension in three rural communities of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, South West Nigeria.

BackgroundThe prevalence of hypertension is increasing rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa, but data are limited on hypertension prevalence. In addition, few population-based studies have been conducted recently in Nigeria on the prevalence and correlates of hypertension in both urban and rural communities. Therefore, we determined the prevalence of hypertension in adults in the three rural communities of Ipetumodu, Edunabon, and Moro, in South West Nigeria.Materials and methodsOne thousand adults between 15 and 90 years of age were recruited into this cross-sectional study, over a 6-month period, using a multistage proportional stratified random sampling technique. Sociodemographic data and anthropometric variables were obtained, and resting blood pressure (BP) was measured using an electronic sphygmomanometer. Diagnosis of hypertension was based on the JNC VII guidelines, the WHO/ISH 1999 guidelines, and the BP threshold of 160/95 mmHg.ResultsFour hundred and eighty-six men (48.6%) men and 514 women (51.4%) participated in the study. Their mean age, weight, height, and body mass index were 32.3±14.7 years, 62±13 kg, 1.5±0.1 m, and 23.02 kg/m2, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension, based on the 140/90 mmHg definition, was 26.4% (Male: 27.3%; Female: 25.4%). The prevalence of hypertension, based on the 160/95 mmHg definition, was 11.8% (Male: 13.5%; Female: 10.1%). There were significant positive correlations between BP and some anthropometric indicators of obesity.ConclusionThe prevalence of hypertension in the three rural communities was 26.4%, indicating a trend towards increasing prevalence of hypertension. There was also a significant positive correlation between anthropometric indicators of obesity and BP in this population.

Women’s perception of safety and utilization of herbal remedies during pregnancy in a local government area in Nigeria

This descriptive study examined the perception of safety and utilization of herbal remedies during pregnancy using a convenience sampling of 300 women. The women who participated in the study were selected at household level from rural communities in Ife-North local government area of Osun state in Nigeria. Data was collected with the aid of semi-structured questionnaire using interviewer-administered method after informed consent had been taken from each participant. The results show that the women had positive perception about the safety and efficacy of herbs over conventional drugs in pregnancy. Greater percentage of the participants studied had used herbs at one point or the other during pregnancy. Local concoction also referred to as “ Agbo ” was the most used herbs by the women. The need for laboratory exploration of these herbs was emphasized by this study because of the high usage by pregnant women without any empirical evidence on its safety and efficacy.

Zooplankton abundance and diversity of fishponds exposed to different management practices

The taxonomic composition and community structure of zooplankton faunae of selected earthen fishponds in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria were investigated for a period of two years sampling every other month. The study was based on three sets of fishponds with regards to fertilization practice and water flow regime. These include non flow-through ponds that received organic and inorganic fertilizers (FNF); flow-through ponds that received organic and inorganic fertilizers (FF) and unfertilized flowthrough ponds. The zooplankton fauna of the fishponds comprised of 81 species belonging to three phyla namely Rotifera (62 species belonging to 16 families and two orders), Arthropoda (6 cladocerans, 2 copepods, 6 ostracods, 4 insecta and one arachnid species) and Protozoa which was represented by only one species. Zooplankton species richness indices were generally higher in the flow-through ponds than in the non flow through ponds with some species occurring only in the fertilized flow-through ponds. The flow-through pond had the highest number of species 54, while the least number of species 37 was recorded from the non flowthrough pond. The fertilized non-flow-through ponds also had the .highest mean abundance of 36762 ± 56162 ind/m 3 , followed by fertilized flow-through ponds (34346 ± 40784 ind/m 3 ) and non-fertilized flow-through ponds (16006 ± 41263 ind/m 3 ) descending order. The means in zooplankton abundance among the ponds were, however, not statistically significant. The fertilized ponds supported zooplankton abundance while continuous water flow as observed in the flow-through had direct influence on diversity and species richness. Hence to achieve the desired effect of pond fertilization on its primary productivity, this must be accompanied by adequate water flowage especially in shallow fish ponds.
