IEEE SBC at VJEC Co-Organizes Arduino-Themed Workshop

On 29 July 2022, the IEEE Student Branch Chapter (SBC) at Vimal Jyothi Engineering College (VJEC) co-organized a workshop with the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES), IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), and IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Student Branch Chapters. The theme of the workshop was “Pinch Your Spark” and highlighted Arduino, which is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software ( <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 1</xref> ).

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is one of the largest international professional organizations dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests to a career in engineering. In 2021, Greg Lyons, then-president of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), launched a task force to focus on mentoring, diversity, and inclusion in the Society. Women in Microwaves (WIM) Chair Sherry Hess was appointed as the lead for the task force, and the global slate of members included Charlotte Blair, Ana Inês Inácio, Sridhar Kanamaluru, Qiaowei Yuan, and Anding Zhu as well as Fred Schindler and Goutam Chattopadhyay as advisors.

Changing the World, Step by Step [History

History is about people, places, and things. It is also about change. Historically, women in engineering have rarely been regarded as valued equals and at times were not welcomed into the engineering profession, whether in academia or industry. Women had to prove themselves over and over again to their male counterparts and superiors to achieve recognition for their many contributions. To change this paradigm, IEEE women engineers organized under the umbrella of IEEE Women in Engineering to support, mentor, and lobby for their equal place in the technical world. Lucia Pía Torres is one such advocate whose life experiences and career development are presented in this very personal and inspiring history article. I want to thank her for sharing her experiences, thoughts, and meaningful career objectives. I’m sure you will enjoy reading her story in this article.

Each year, the IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) hosts the IEEE WiE International Leadership Conference (ILC) as a forum to support diversity in technology. This year, the IEEE PELS WiE committee had two committee members as speakers and sponsored committee members to attend the virtual conference for professional development.

The Women in Power Sector Professional Network in South Asia Initiative: Increasing the participation of women in South Asia’s energy and power sector [Pipelining: Attractive Programs for Women

When the World Bank was looking to build an initiative aimed at promoting female engineering in South Asia, it contacted Ramalatha Marimuthu for assistance. Marimuthu is world renowned for her support of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields as a retired professor, an IEEE Impact Creator, former chair of IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), founder of IEEE’s international talent show Youth Endeavours For Social Innovation Using Sustainable Technology (YESIST12) and the Returning Mothers Conference, and a leader of and participant in numerous other women’s-empowerment activities. All of this work made Marimuthu the perfect central contact with whom to kick off the idea for the Women in Power Sector Professional Network in South Asia (WePOWER).
