Competition between sympatric hare species in the Alps is boostered by climate change and hybridisation

Climatic variation along the elevation gradient promotes the natural parapatric occurrence of the European hare (Lepus europaeus) and Alpine mountain hare (Lepus timidus varronis) in the Alps. Recent data indicate a displacement of mountain hares caused by competition with the European hare. Competitive exclusion might take place at a fine spatial scale and hybrids may sharpen competition. Genetic non-invasive sampling (gNIS) demonstrates to be effective to retrieve information from wild animals. However, based on the accuracy of the differing genetic analysis methods, the selection of the method might decisively influence results. To examine habitat preferences of Alpine mountain hares, European hares and their hybrids with particular interest in the influence of the accuracy of the genetic analysis method on the results, we performed gNIS in Grisons (Switzerland) for four years and compared habitat associations of the genotyped samples. We recorded 137 individuals (i.e., 35 hybrids, 49 European hares, 53 Alpine mountain hares). Combined nuclear and mitochondrial DNA analysis including individual identification revealed to be the most accurate indirect method for the study of habitat preferences of hares. Alpine mountain hares had a narrow habitat breadth and used little habitat diversity. Hybrids showed great similarities in their habitat preferences to European hares. Hybrids might increase the competition in favour of European hares and the displacement of Alpine mountain hares, since they show similar patterns of habitat use to European hares. Ongoing climate change potentiate the niche overlap between species, increasing the risk of Alpine hare decline due to hybridisation and displacement.

Phylogeography of apomictic and outcrossing individuals in invasive and native populations of Ardisia crenata (Primulaceae)

AbstractPhylogeography of invasive exotic plant species is crucial for identifying the source population from which a given invading population has originated. Ardisia crenata Sims, a shade tolerant shrub native to East Asia, is one of the most serious invasive exotic plants in Florida, North America. The objective of this study is to investigate the genetic differentiation and phylogeographical relationships among A. crenata native populations in Japan and invasive populations in Florida. We analyzed DNA from 188 individuals gathered from eight populations in Japan and four subpopulations in Florida using double‐digestion restriction‐associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD‐seq) and estimated a maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree among them. The results revealed four genetic clusters, with a striking dominance of genetically identical clonal individuals within the invading populations in Florida and four Honshu populations in Japan. These groups were genetically close to each other and to one cultivated individual sampled in Japan. In contrast, the individuals from Miyazaki, Yakushima, Kochi, and Iriomote in southwestern Japan were genetically distinct from Honshu and Florida individuals, showing high genetic diversity indicative of outcrossing. Given that A. crenata does not exhibit a vegetative clonal habit and all wild and cultivated plants regenerate from seeds, these results suggest that Honshu and Florida populations exclusively reproduced with seeds produced by apomixis.

Teacher identity ambiguity and where to find it? A narrative inquiry of ELT teachers in rural areas

Commitment and efficiency of teachers are supposed to closely link with the perception of their own identity, which determine their working motivation and job satisfaction. The past few years have seen many teachers, particularly those in less developing regions, leaving their profession due to low pay regardless of affluent nations, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, or developing countries like Vietnam. In fact, the problem could only be addressed when the root cause is revealed. Using the narrative inquiry approach with semi-structured interviews and researchers’ voice on eight English teachers, this study positions and examines the identity of rural language teachers in various intertwined interactions at personal and societal discourses. Research results unveiled the dominance of external factors in shaping and shifting teacher identity, including students, policies, school leadership and socio-cultural systems. Also, personal identity was more likely to be suppressed while professional identity was vaguely expressed. A comprehensive understanding of teacher identity would give policymakers and teacher educators some justification to revisit current policies and teacher training programs by taking into account individual identities, experiences, and concerns of rural teachers.

Secure and Privacy-Protected Bioinformation Implementation in Air Passenger Transport Based on DLT

Aviation information systems are a key component in ensuring efficient and smooth air transport operations. In this regard, the transfer of passenger information between parties is of paramount importance. With the continuous improvement of biometrics technology, this kind of individual identification that can provide accurate and unforgeable identification is widely used in various fields. This research presents the significance and effective application scenarios of facial recognition in biometrics in air transport operations. Due to the characteristics of aviation information systems, Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is used in this study for secure and private transmission of facial recognition information. Distributed systems can give a transparent and secure platform to multiple parties to access sensitive passenger data. This study uses the Corda framework as the DLT that supports CorDapp development. Based on the above techniques, this study proposes two feasible application scenarios. One is a baggage match detection system to prevent misplaced baggage, and the other is an iAPIS system that transmits passenger information in real-time communication between airlines and border control agencies. This article details how to apply the research in these two scenarios, as well as the benefits and implications of the applications. Finally, this article presents an outlook for future development and feasible directions for improvement.

Tracking dynamic evolution of low- and intermediate-risk differentiated thyroid cancer: Identification of individuals at risk of recurrence.

The generally good prognosis of low- and intermediate-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) underscored the need to identify those few patients who relapse. Records of 299 low- or intermediate-risk DTC patients (mean follow-up 8.2 ± 6.2 years) were retrospectively reviewed. The sample was classified following the American Thyroid Association (ATA) dynamic risk stratification (DRS) system. After classifying patients according to DRS at the first visit following initial therapy (FU1), structural recurrence occurred in 2/181 (1.1%), 5/81 (6.2%) and 13/26 (50.0%) with excellent, indeterminate and biochemical incomplete response to treatment, respectively. All relapses but one happened within 5 years from FU1. Univariate analysis comparing excellent, indeterminate and biochemical incomplete with structural incomplete responses at the end of the follow-up, identified tumour size (p < .001), T status (<0.001), positive lymph nodes (N) (p < .01), multifocality (p < .004), need of additional radioactive iodine (RAI) (p < .0001) and first DRS status (p < .0003) as risk factors of recurrence. In the multivariate analysis, only RAI remained statistically significant (p < .02). Comparison between excellent and indeterminate with biochemical and structural incomplete responses, identified tumour size (p < .0004), T (p < .01), N (p < .0001), bilaterality (p < .03), first DRS status (p < .0001) and RAI (p < .001) as recurrence risk factors. T (p < .01) and first DRS (p < .0006) were confirmed in the multivariate analysis. Patients with DTC classified as low- or intermediate-risk of recurrence with excellent response to treatment at FU1 rarely develop structural disease and this occurs almost exclusively in the first 5 years. Initial DRS status is an accurate tool for determining the risk of recurrence.

Primary Hypertension in Children and Adolescents

The incidence of primary hypertension is on the rise in the pediatric population, with an approximate prevalence ranging from 3% to 5%. The most significant risk factors for the onset and development of primary hypertension are well-known, and some of them are preventable, including increased salt consumption and obesity. Connected with metabolic risk factors, elevated blood pressure in childhood is carried into adulthood. Primary hypertension is associated with attenuated vascular responses to various physiological stimuli in both peripheral microcirculation and systemic macrocirculation in adults and children. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the most important features of arterial hypertension, together with an increased level of oxidative stress – both determinants significantly contribute to all the pathophysiological changes observed in hypertension. Systemic arterial hypertension has emerged as a prevalent cardiovascular risk factor associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Hence, the timely identification of individuals with elevated blood pressure and early-life blood pressure management could serve as a crucial strategy to mitigate the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in adulthood.

Clinical and echographic parameters as risk factors for atrial fibrilation in patients with hypertophic cardiomyopathy

Abstract Introduction Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most prevalent inherited cardiomyopathy characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy and manifests with atrial fibrillation in 25% of patients, correlating with heightened morbidity and mortality rates. Purpose To investigate the clinical and echocardiographic parameters associated with the occurrence and progression of atrial fibrillation in patients diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Material and Methods The study sample consisted of 72 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy attending the Hereditary Heart Disease Unit at a tertiary cardiac surgery center. Thorough examination of patients' medical records was conducted. Results Myocardial fibrosis was observed in 68.1% of the patients. Analysis of the data revealed that atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes were more prevalent in older individuals (p=0.035) with a lower ejection fraction (p=0.003). Additionally, a larger left atrial diameter of 49.8mm (p&amp;lt;0.001), functional stage according to NYHA III (p=0.015), a history of syncope/pre-syncope events (p=0.018), patients with an implanted pacemaker/defibrillator (p=0.003), and those with known coronary artery disease factors (p=0.032), particularly dyslipidemia (p=0.049) and diabetes mellitus (p=0.027), were associated with higher AF incidence. Conclusions . This study underscores the importance of recognizing clinical and echocardiographic factors that contribute to atrial fibrillation risk in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, enabling early identification of high-risk individuals and implementation of preventive strategies to reduce the frequency of atrial fibrillation episodes and associated complications.

Genetic Testing Uptake among Ovarian Cancer Survivors in the Genetic Risk Analysis in Ovarian Cancer (GRACE) Study.

Recommendations state all people with ovarian cancers (OCs) receive genetic counseling, but testing uptake is only between 15 and 31%. Those with a prior diagnosis of OC who have not received genetic testing represent a missed opportunity for life-saving genetic risk information. The Genetic Risk Analysis in ovarian CancEr (GRACE) study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the retrospective identification ("Traceback") of individuals diagnosed with OC. This nonrandomized intervention study within two integrated health care systems identified participants with a history of OC between 1998 and 2020 who did not have genetic testing or testing limited to BRCA1/2. Participants received clinical genomic sequencing via a custom 60 gene panel. This study measured the feasibility of the Traceback methodology in OC survivors. The initial cohort included 929 individuals, of which 57% had no prior genetic testing. Of the 302 eligible for recruitment, 88 consented to participate. We were able to outreach 97% of the eligible population using contact information from medical records. The stage at diagnosis was the only factor associated with consent. Of the 78 who returned their saliva sample, 21% had pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants, and 79% had negative results. The GRACE study resulted in a 29% uptake of genetic testing in OC survivors. The time since diagnosis did not have an impact on consent or ability to contact. GRACE can inform the implementation of future Traceback programs, providing guidance on how to prevent and mitigate the burden of OC and other hereditary cancers.

Re-mediating The Female American: Collaboration and Situated Knowledges in the Digital Humanities Classroom

ABSTRACT The Female American, published pseudonymously in 1767, has drawn scholarly attention in recent decades as a novel that raises questions about anonymity, gender, authorship, Indigeneity, settler colonialism, and the American literary canon. Yet access to the text has remained limited, dependent on subscription databases and print scholarly editions. In 2022, as part of a graduate seminar on eighteenth-century literature, science, and colonialism, we produced the first open-access digital edition of volume 1; a subset of the class also recorded a public domain audiobook of the full novel. This article presents an account of our process and the connections drawn between these projects and course content, with attention to conversations and tensions that arose as we drafted a land acknowledgment for the edition. Moving beyond the “how we built this” genre common in digital humanities, this article offers a critical reflection on the ways our individual interests, identities, commitments, and institutional embeddedness shaped the knowledge we could cocreate. Our aim is to demonstrate that the benefits of digital pedagogy extend far beyond technical skill-building—especially in graduate education, where digital projects provide an opportunity for emerging scholars to reflect critically on material and social entanglements that conventional humanities workflows often obscure.

Investigation of sorptive interactions between volatile organic compounds and supramolecules at dynamic oscillation using bulk acoustic wave resonator virtual sensor arrays

Supramolecules are considered as promising materials for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensing applications. The proper understanding of the sorption process taking place in host-guest interactions is critical in improving the pattern recognition of supramolecules-based sensing arrays. Here, we report a novel approach to investigate the dynamic host-guest recognition process by employing a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator capable of producing multiple oscillation amplitudes and simultaneously recording multiple responses to VOCs. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were modified on four BAW sensors to demonstrate the gas-surface interactions regarding oscillation amplitude and SAM length. Based on the method, a virtual sensor array (VSA) type electronic nose (e-nose) can be realized by pattern recognition of multiple responses at different oscillation amplitudes of a single sensor. VOCs analysis was realized respectively by using principal component analysis (PCA) for individual VOC identification and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for VOCs mixtures classification.

The incidence, risk factors, and prognosis of acute kidney injury in patients after cardiac surgery.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) represents a significant complication following cardiac surgery, associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. Despite its clinical importance, there is a lack of universally applicable and reliable methods for the early identification and diagnosis of AKI. This study aimed to examine the incidence of AKI after cardiac surgery, identify associated risk factors, and evaluate the prognosis of patients with AKI. This retrospective study included adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery at Changhai Hospital between January 7, 2021, and December 31, 2021. AKI was defined according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. Perioperative data were retrospectively obtained from electronic health records. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for AKI. The 30-day survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and differences between survival curves for different AKI severity levels were compared using the log-rank test. Postoperative AKI occurred in 257 patients (29.6%), categorized as stage 1 (179 patients, 20.6%), stage 2 (39 patients, 4.5%), and stage 3 (39 patients, 4.5%). The key independent risk factors for AKI included increased mean platelet volume (MPV) and the volume of intraoperative cryoprecipitate transfusions. The 30-day mortality rate was 3.2%. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a lower survival rate in the AKI group (89.1%) compared to the non-AKI group (100%, P < 0.001). AKI was notably prevalent following cardiac surgery in this study, significantly impacting survival rates. Notably, MPV and administration of cryoprecipitate may have new considerable predictive significance. Proactive identification and management of high-risk individuals are essential for reducing postoperative complications and mortality.

Introducing dadness

ABSTRACT Based on interviews and a focus group with fathers 1 who attended four dads’ groups in the South of England, this paper introduces the concept of ‘dadness’. Dadness is in circulation in the public sphere and has been noted in a handful of published sources, yet it has not received academic attention. This article conceptualizes ‘dadness’ and presents it as a useful concept within contemporary fatherhood and family studies, as well as noting the term’s accessibility. The term dadness is understood by men in this study as combining their individual fathering identity and their values about the fathering role, with actual day-to-day fathering practices. Interpretation of the data infers eight aspects of dadness that draw together existing conceptualizations of fathering and fatherhood in terms of accessibility, engagement and responsibility; ‘active fathering’; warmth, positive engagement activities, decision-making, responsiveness, care; intimacy; and embodiment. Dadness describes both how men think about fatherhood and enact their fathering practices, and is accessible (it is a term men readily understand and feel able to use). This article invites a debate about whether the concept of dadness has a wider potential outside of the specific context of a small-scale study in southern England.

Exploring design and technological aspects of digital fashion: a systematic review of recent innovations

ABSTRACT This study examines the state of research in the field of digital fashion, specifically focusing on design and production. The authors propose a definition for digital fashion as the ‘virtual creation, production, and depiction of an individual's identity, in particular in the field of clothing and footwear, through computer-aided design’. Using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 386 publications from the Web of Science database have been selected for the systematic review. A keyword map was created based on bibliographic data, and a cluster analysis of the publications revealed five main clusters. The analysis of articles shows that the most frequently mentioned topics are design, fashion, social media, and technology. Sustainability, digital fashion, and performance are also frequently discussed.

Access to test selection in children’s athletics – Prediction of reaching maximum speed level and result in sprint based on dynamickinematic parameters, speed-strength abilities and morphological characteristics

Running speed in the form of sprinting is one of the most important abilities that can significantly define performance success in many sports. From the perspective of genetically inherited motor functions, running speed can be classified as a primary phylogenetic human movement, manifested in the form of a “threesegment model” consisting of speed, power, and coordination. By comprehensively analyzing the general and partial predictive contributions of dynamic-kinematic parameters of running, speed-power abilities, and morphological characteristics, on a sample of 80 boys aged 10-12 years, it can be concluded that regardless of the choice of criteria, achieved maximal speeds (KVMAX) or results in children’s athletic sprint over 50 meters (KT50m), the same or related predictor variables contributed to the explanation. The variable running time for 20m from a flying start (KTLS20m) has the greatest predictive contribution (β=0.83, p&lt;0.001) to explaining both criteria, which may indicate the importance of conducting this test in the identification and selection for athletic sprint. Additionally, the selection of tests to assess speed-power abilities is extremely important for the identification and selection for athletic sprint. It can be concluded that tests of horizontal and vertical jumps are significant for identification, as well as tests for assessing neuro-muscular excitation. Tests for assessing continuous horizontal jump are also important, although there is an impression that, in boys aged 10-12 years, coordinatively simpler tests should be used. In the analysis of morphological characteristics, variables that significantly contributed to the explanation of criteria at a partial level were body height, back skinfold, and ankle diameter, indicating that in the identification of talented individuals, it should be considered that elite sprinters are characterized by light bones, optimal muscle mass, and low levels of subcutaneous fat tissue.

Evaluating the potential importance of individual identity, maternal traits, and environment as predictors of egg characteristics in walleye Sander vitreus

Individual and environmental factors may influence gamete characteristics and contributions to recruitment in fishes. We tested for the influence of maternal, abiotic, and biotic factors on egg diameter and quality (i.e., oil droplet diameter) for walleye Sander vitreus in Escanaba Lake, Wisconsin, during 2018–2023 (omitting 2020). Analyses were conducted on fish captured once and for the same individuals captured multiple times during our study period. In the single-capture analysis, increasing maternal length was weakly related to larger egg diameter and oil droplet size. Increased yellow perch abundance was somewhat related to increased intra-clutch variation, whereas a later ice-off date was related to reduced intra-clutch variation. Fish that spawned later had more variable egg and oil droplet diameters. Among fish that were sampled over multiple years, individual identity was a strong predictor of egg and oil diameter. Our results suggest that regulations that preserve among individual variation in egg traits could increase the chances that environmental conditions will be favorable for spawning and recruitment for at least some fish.

Writing the Self: Identity Formation in Dalit Women’s Life Writings

The formation of self in Dalit women’s writings is a historical process which is based on their lived experiences, centuries of suffering and resistance against the atrocities meted out on them because of untouchability and being women. They depict their struggle for survival and protest through the experiences from their daily lives of poverty, hunger, humiliation and exploitation. Uniquely, Dalit women’s ‘Self’ stands for individual identity as well as the collective identity of the community they belong to. At the intersection of class, caste and gender they are considered as ‘Dalit among Dalits’. In the pages of history, they remained neglected and suffered the ‘triple’ subjugation of caste, class and gender. Presently, they have embarked their self-identity on the literary canon through their life writings as resistance against their subordination – both caste and patriarchy. Their writings are mostly in form of autobiographies, biographies, memoirs and autobiographical fiction and most of them have been written in regional languages which lead to the formation of Dalit ‘Self’. Recently, a few Dalit women’s writings have been translated into English and have got access to the wider range of readers. These translated works, though few in number, have paved ways for Dalit women’s formation of self and have succeeded in establishing a standpoint for themselves – a Dalit Feminist Standpoint. Taking up the analysis of three groundbreaking Dalit women’s autobiographies namely The Prisons We Broke by Baby Kamble, The Weave of My Life by Urmila Pawar and Karukku by Bama, the focus of the paper centers around Dalit women’s suffering and how they successfully combat the hegemony of their oppressors and formed a separate branch of identity for themselves on the literary canon as Dalit feminism.

Self-efficacy mediation of spiritual well-being and work-family balance

ABSTRACT Work and family are two of the most important aspects of individual identity, but conflict can occur when these domains fall out of balance. Through the conceptual lens of job demands-resource theory, this study examines how spiritual well-being can help employees balance competing roles by strengthening self-efficacy in managing work-family conflict. A quantitative, correlational research design was used to analyze responses from 475 working adults in a mediated multiple regression model. The results indicated that the positive relationship between spiritual well-being and satisfaction with work-family balance is fully mediated by self-efficacy in managing work-family conflict. These findings empirically support the influential roles spiritual well-being and self-efficacy have in balancing conflicting demands in the work-family interface. For organizations and managers, this research underscores the importance of supporting spiritual well-being in a diverse workforce to reduce stress and sustain employee engagement.

Mental Manifestations and Biomarkers of Alcohol Consumption.

The purpose of this study is to examine healthcare usage, morbidities, and alcohol consumption monitoring in patients before a diagnosis of mental manifestations to assist in the early identification of individuals at risk. Biological markers of alcoholism are separated into two groups: those biological variables that highlight with great confidence and validate the presence of a predisposition to alcoholism, also called trait markers, or those that highlight alcohol consumption, called markers of alcoholism ("status markers"). Biomarkers are the true "gold standard" for the diagnosis of alcoholism. They are valuable for tracking evolution and progress during biological and psychological therapy and for highlighting relapse. This review compiles the existing data from research on healthcare utilization, comorbidities, and alcohol consumption monitoring in patients before a diagnosis of mental manifestations to aid in the early identification of individuals at risk. This documentary study took place over three to four months by searching for terms on the Science Direct platform, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar such as alcoholism, alcohol use disorders, alcohol abuse, and biomarkers. Studies reporting on the development, characteristics, and utilization of blood biomarkers for alcohol consumption were included in the search. The initial search included a number of 11.019 articles that contained the keywords biomarkers and alcohol. Finally, a total of 50 research articles were considered. I am involved in clinical studies, meta-analyses, reviews, and case studies regarding alcohol consumption detection, as well as potential alcohol markers.

Polygenic risk score of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease amplifies the health impact on severe liver disease and metabolism-related outcomes

BackgroundAlthough the inherited risk factors associated with fatty liver disease are well understood, little is known about the genetic background of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its related health impacts. Compared to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), MASLD presents significantly distinct diagnostic criteria, and epidemiological and clinical features, but the related genetic variants are yet to be investigated. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the genetic background of MASLD and interactions between MASLD-related genetic variants and metabolism-related outcomes.MethodsParticipants from the UK Biobank were grouped into discovery and replication cohorts for an MASLD genome-wide association study (GWAS), and base and target cohorts for polygenic risk score (PRS) analysis. Autosomal genetic variants associated with NAFLD were compared with the MASLD GWAS results. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to assess associations between MASLD and metabolism-related outcomes.ResultsSixteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified at genome-wide significance levels for MASLD and duplicated in the replication cohort. Differences were found after comparing these SNPs with the results of NAFLD-related genetic variants. MASLD cases with high PRS had a multivariate-adjusted hazard ratio of 3.15 (95% confidence interval, 2.54–3.90) for severe liver disease (SLD), and 2.81 (2.60–3.03) for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
