Genetic differentiation of two morphotypes of Piper regnellii (Miq.) C. DC. var. regnellii

Piper regnellii (Miq.) C. DC. var. regnellii, popularly known as "pariparoba", is used for therapeutic purposes. However, the morphological similarity among Piper species can lead to misidentifications, so molecular markers have been used to validate the identification of species and their morphotypes. Among the molecular markers used in plants, the intergenic spacer region trnL-trnF has proven effective in identifying plant species. For this reason, this region was used to evaluate two morphotypes of Piper regnellii var. regnellii. Studies with the trnL-trnF region have shown this region as a good marker for establishing phylogenetic relationships, distinguishing species, and identifying new species. We concluded that the trnL-trnF sequenced region show one indel of difference between the two morphotypes. It would be interesting to analyze these two morphotypes with a more variable region than the one used here, aiming to show intraspecific differences.

Assessment of Major Honey Bee Forage Resources and Floral Calendar Establishment in Selected Districts of Arsi Zone, Oromia Region State, Ethiopia

The study was conducted from 2015 to 2017 G.C. with the objective of identifying and documenting honey bee forage plant resource, establishing flowering calendar and recommending the necessary seasonal colony management practices in selected districts of Arsi zone. Semi-structured questionnaire tool was used to collect data. Ninety beekeepers were selected and involved in data collection. Traditional, transitional and modern bee hives were used for honey production. The overall mean of colony owned per household in the current study areas was found to be 5.2 + 5.2. Honey production was conducted during two seasons namely: major and minor seasons. The mean of honey yield per traditional, transitional and modern hive was 10.8 + 5.9kg, 19.8 + 17.3kg and 33.2 + 48.9kg, respectively. 61.1% of the respondents harvest honey two times a year, whereas 34.5% of them harvest honey once a year and 4.4% of respondents three times a year. Honeybee was found to be in critical shortage of forage during months ranging from December to August. A total of 98 plant floras including trees, shrubs, herbs, cultivated crops and animal feeds and grasses were identified in the current study areas. G uizotia scabra, equiliptus globules and vernonia species were the most frequently identified plant species . The knowledge in the identification of honey bee flora and their flowering time has therefore paramount importance in assisting beekeepers to establish appropriate colony management calendar and honey flow season. Further detail studies focusing on bee flora should be conducted and awareness creation of experts and farmers on seasonal management of beehives through training is required. Evaluation of the Air Pollution Tolerance Index of 12 Plant Species Growing in Environments with Different Air Pollution Levels

Background and objective Particulate matter (PM) is the most dangerous form of air pollution, and causes many diseases. Plants act as bio-filters to help reduce PM in the atmosphere. PM also influences the growth of plants, so selecting suitable plant species for specific environmental conditions is very important. The air pollution tolerance index (APTI) was used to determine the tolerance level of each plant species to air pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the tolerance to air pollution of various plant species in order to identify plant species that can be grown in polluted environments; this was achieved by evaluating the APTI of plants. This study analyzed the biochemical parameters of 12 plant species at two sites with different air pollution levels (urban forest and roadside) to assess and compare the APTI of plant species. Methods The healthy leaves of 12 plant species (6 broad leaves and 6 needle leaves) that are commonly used in landscapes in Korea were chosen for this study. The same plant species were collected from two sites with different pollution levels and were analyzed immediately; one site was an urban forest (Chungcheongbuk-do Forest Environment Research Institute) with an area of 25 ha and featuring high vegetation coverage, while the other was at a high-traffic roadside next to a crossroads near the Cheongju Express Bus Terminal. We used the leaf samples to analyze four biochemical parameters of each plant: leaf extract pH (pH), relative leaf water content (RWC), total chlorophyll (TChl), and ascorbic acid. Finally, based on these values, APTI values were calculated. Results The APTI values were different between all 12 plant species at both sites with different levels of pollution. APTI had a significant correlation with the biochemical parameters of plants. Plants in the urban forest and at the roadside showed APTI values ranging from 6.89–9.37 and 7.57–9.94, respectively. The APTI of the roadside plant species tended to be higher than that of the plants from the urban forest. Among 12 plant species, Acer palmatum, Acer buergerianum, and Pinus densiflora had high APTI values. These plant species can serve as biofilters in environments with high air pollution. Conclusion The APTI of the 12 plant species in this study can aid in the selection of suitable plant species from environments with different levels of air pollution. The high APTI of some roadside plant species may show their tolerance under environmental pollution-related stress, or demonstrate their adaptability to the polluted environment. In the future, we need to examine more plant species under various environmental conditions to understand their tolerance levels to air pollution and to correlate plants with air pollution. Further, more studies on other air pollutants that can influence plant growth, such as SO2 and NOx, should be conducted.

Municipal solid waste landfill: Evidence of the effect of applied landfill management on vegetation composition.

Proper management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is crucial to avoid pollution, environmental impacts and threat to public health. The problem of MSW is mainly arising from inadequate landfill site management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of management practices and environmental risks at two landfill sites. The landfills were subject to long-term (10 years) vegetation monitoring. The vegetation was assessed using a floristic survey of identified plant species. The vegetation analysis showed that significant differences existed between the two landfill locations, with neophytes, invasive and expansive species dominating on one of the landfill sites, which may be attributed to climatic and geomorphological differences between the two sites, but also to variations in landfill management. These environmentally problematic species can potentially spread from the landfill into adjacent ecosystems, displace native plants and degrade adjacent farmland areas. The study of vegetation monitoring data suggests that, in addition to other types of monitoring, landfills should be subjected to regular vegetation biomonitoring, too. Landfill management practices should target the regulation of unwanted species, create conditions that are favourable to native plant species and provide as early as possible the restoration of filled cells.

Biological and Agronomic Traits of the Main Halophytes Widespread in the Mediterranean Region as Potential New Vegetable Crops

Salinity is one of the oldest and most serious environmental problems in the world. The increasingly widespread salinization of soils and water resources represents a growing threat to agriculture around the world. A strategy to cope with this problem is to cultivate salt-tolerant crops and, therefore, it is necessary to identify plant species that are naturally adapted to high-salinity conditions. In this review, we focus our attention on some plant species that can be considered among the most representative halophytes of the Mediterranean region; they can be potential resources, such as new or relatively new vegetable crops, to produce raw or minimally processed (or ready-to-eat) products, considering their nutritional properties and nutraceuticals. The main biological and agronomic characteristics of these species and the potential health risks due to mycotoxigenic fungi have been analyzed and summarized in a dedicated section. The objective of this review is to illustrate the main biological and agronomical characteristics of the most common halophytic species in the Mediterranean area, which could expand the range of leafy vegetables on the market.

Using motifs in ecological networks to identify the role of plants in crop margins for multiple agriculture functions

Advances in network ecology offer new tools for the sustainable management of agroecosystems. Plants in field margins may be involved in different processes of agronomic importance - indirectly affecting crops by supporting shared pollinators, hosting natural enemies of pests or acting as pest reservoirs. In this work, we explored the use of motifs (patterns of interaction between a subset of species) in agricultural ecological networks incorporating multiple types of trophic interactions to identify plant species with a key role in field margins. We searched for plant species benefiting crops via (1) shared pollinators and (2) supporting parasitoids of crop pests; or (3) negatively affecting crops through attracting pest herbivore species. We focused on determining whether species’ showed consistent affiliation with these roles across the landscape and evaluated the potential of plant species to influence crops indirectly via shared insect partners. To showcase our framework, we used a unique data set of antagonistic and mutualistic interactions recorded in soybean crops and wild plant species in field margins, that despite its limitations (e.g., spanning one growing season) allowed us to test our approach using multiple types of interactions simultaneously. Here, we support the use of motifs in multi-trophic interaction networks in agroecosystems to reveal the role of key plant species in sustaining ecological functions involving crops and other plant species, enhancing the evidence base for management recommendations in the future.

Assessment of vegetation in Murchison falls national park five years after the completion of oil and gas exploration

Uganda discovered petroleum deposits in commercially viable quantities in 2006. Most areas such as Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) where petroleum has been discovered overlap with wildlife and nature conservation with high biodiversity and sensitive ecosystems. This study sought to study the vegetation frequency index, relative abundance and diversity in former oil pads five years after the completion of oil and gas exploration in MFNP. We counted all observed plant species following a systematic random sampling technique using a (1mx1m) quadrat for herbs, (5mx5m) quadrat for shrubs, and (10mx10m) quadrat for trees. Data was collected using a 60m line transect to record the identified plant species. The study used a total of eight quadrats per transect and the total number of transects were 32. A quadrat was placed every after 7m along the line transect in and outside the oil pads. Each transect begun from the center (placard) of the oil pad going in directions of center to north, center to south, center to east, and center to west. This was carried out for purposes of replication and the same procedure was carried out for the control area. The same procedure was conducted at a frequency of wet (4th-30th April 2019) and dry (1st-30th June 2019) seasons. The counted data was later transformed and analyzed using t-statistical tests and chi- square tests in SPSS version 20 software. The study recorded uniform and non-uniform plant species and the mean vegetation diversity of 1.9±0.06 in oil pads and 1.71±0.12 in control areas. The study identified 31 different plant species, and among these, seven plant species were recorded in oil pads, eight in control areas. The results of vegetation relative abundance and diversity between oil pads and control areas were generally similar. However, the study observed some plant species such as Desert date (Balanites aegyptiaca) in control areas that were completely absent in oil pads. Further studies focusing on edaphic assessments, soil chemical, and biological analysis to better understand the impacts of oil exploration in the protected area are recommended.

Visiting Plants of Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Inferred From Identification of Adhering Pollen Grains.

Numerous lepidopteran adults frequently pick up plant pollen when feeding. Identifying plant species visited by Mamestra brassicae moths could further strengthen our knowledge of their migratory trajectory and the interactions of M. brassicae moths with these plant species. Here, with morphological analysis and DNA metabarcoding of pollen carried by the moths, we determined these plant species visited by M. brassicae during 2015-2018. Pollen grains removed from M. brassicae moths were identified from 25 species (18 were identified to genus), representing at least 19 families, including Pinaceae, Oleaceae, Rosaceae, and Asteraceae, but mainly belonging to Angiospermae, Dicotyledoneae. There were noticeable interannual differences (maximum value: 35.31% in 2018) and seasonal differences (maximum value: 33.28% in April-(including May)-June) in the frequency of M. brassicae moths with adhering pollen, but no noticeable difference based on sex. Meanwhile, we also found pollen from some species such as Citrus sinensis (Rutales: Rutaceae) and Melia azedarach (Rutales: Meliaceae) that grow in southern China, indicating that M. brassicae moths might migrate northward in spring. Our results demonstrate that the M. brassicae moth visits a variety of plant species during migration, and these findings promote our understanding of the interaction between moths and these plant species.

Traditional use of medicinal plants in rural areas of Osijek-Baranja county, Republic of Croatia

In this study, the ethnobotanical use of medicinal plants in the rural areas of Osijek-Baranja County, Eastern Republic of Croatia, was analyzed by conducting an ethnobotanical survey with 200 informants. Our aim was to collect and identify plant species used for therapeutic purposes and to record information on traditional herbal medicine. According to our study, 72 plant taxa belonging to 34 families were identified and their usage has been recorded. The most commonly used plants belong to the Asteraceae family followed by species from Lamiaceae, Rosaceae, Apiaceae, and Alliaceae families. Well-known medicinal plant species such as chamomile, linden, nettle, sage, calendula, houseleek, and mint were the ones most often used for medical treatment purposes. Different pharmaceutical forms were prepared, starting from infusions, juices, medicinal baths, poultices, syrups, ointments, oils, solutions, and mixtures with honey. The most common indications were various inflammations, colds, skin diseases, insomnia, nervous problems, menstrual problems, as well as digestive and urinary system related problems. Folk medicine in Osijek-Baranja County is intended mainly as a mode of primary health care in the healing of minor illnesses.

Threat status of three important medicinal Himalayan plant species and conservation implications

A lack of precise information about the threat status of species hampers their effective conservation. The Target 2 of the Convention on Biological Diversity calls for evaluation of threat status at global, national and regional levels to identify plant species of urgent conservation concern. Here we have empirically assessed the threat status of three valuable medicinal plant species (Trillium govanianum, Rheum tibeticum, and Arnebia euchroma) through extensive field studies and herbarium consultations in Kashmir Himalaya and cold desert region of Trans-Himalayan Ladakh. In accordance with the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, each of the three target species turned out to be Near Threatened (NT). According to the NatureServe Conservation Status Assessment, each of these species faces the overall threat impact of «High» to «Very high». We found that the anthropogenic threats emanating from unplanned economic development, road construction and other infrastructure related projects contribute to a fast decline in natural populations of these three species. Keeping in view the value of these species, on the one hand, and growing threats to their survival in the wild, on the other one, we call for urgent conservation strategies in the vulnerable Himalayan habitats for regional socio-economic development.

A Review of African Medicinal Plants and Functional Foods for the Management of Alzheimer's Disease-related Phenotypes, Treatment of HSV-1 Infection and/or Improvement of Gut Microbiota.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder is the most common form of dementia globally. Several studies have suggested alteration in the gut microbiota and HSV-1 infection as contributing factors to the development of the disease. As at now, there are no AD attenuating agents and AD pharmacotherapy is focused on managing symptoms while plants used in ethnomedicine remain potential sources of drugs for the treatment of the condition. Here, we reviewed published databases for African ethnomedicinal plants and functional foods of African origin that are used in the management of AD-related phenotypes, treatment of herpes simplex virus −1 (HSV-1) and/or improvement of gut microbiota. A total of 101 unique plant species and 24 different types of traditionally prepared African functional foodstuff were identified. Of the 101 identified plant species, 50 species serve as functional foodstuffs. Twenty-three (23) of the ethnomedicinal plant families were successfully identified for the treatment and management of AD-related phenotypes and age-related dementia. Eighteen (18) African plant species from 15 families were also identified as potent remedies for HSV-1; while many African wild fruits (3 species), roots and tubers (7 species), leafy vegetables (14 species), and seaweeds (26 species) were functional foods for modifying AD-related phenotypes. It was concluded that African medicinal plants are potential sources of both AD attenuating agents and phytocompounds that may be used against HSV-1 infection and alteration of gut microbiota. Additionally, a number of African functional foods are important sources of prebiotics and probiotics.

AN ETHNOBOTANICAL STUDY ON INDIGENOUS FOOD FLAVOURINGS AND AROMATIC ENHANCING PLANTS USED BY THE NATIVE COMMUNITIES OF THE CENTRAL REGION OF SARAWAK

The uses of indigenous plants vary amongst native communities, from being consumed as vegetables, used as flavourings or added as an aromatic enhancer. However, records of their traditional use are sparse and most of the native knowledge on applications of these indigenous plants has not been passed down to later generations. The present study aims to record and identify communal knowledge from the Central Region of Sarawak with regards to the use of indigenous plants as food flavourings or aromatic enhancers. Face-to-face interviews with 150 respondents were conducted in a semi-structured manner to obtain the required information. A total of 27 plant species from 20 families were identified for their use by native people as food flavouring or aromatic enhancement. Zingiberaceae was found to be the most prevalent family of plants in this study with a representation of four species. Leaves were the part of the plants most commonly utilized by natives for flavouring purposes with 12 species being utilized in this manner. The mode of cooking varies within the community according to a preference for taste and aroma intensity as well as inherited oral knowledge passed down from older generations. This study recommends a full nutrient content analysis for the identified plant species shortly.

PLANT SPECIES USED IN PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS: USE IN OTHER DISEASES AND DISTRIBUTION IN THE PHILOGENETIC SYSTEM

The article proposes approaches to identifying plant species that are potentially useful in pulmonary tuberculosis, and identifies, in accordance with the proposed approaches, the range of plant species that deserve the greatest attention in this regard. Based on information on the use of 2834 species of medicinal plants, using the methods of mathematical statistics (Student's criterion), an increased occurrence of plant species used for pulmonary tuberculosis is revealed in sets of species used for other infectious diseases, and in plant families. This kind of focus is hypothesized as a sign of useful applications. 51 infectious diseases were revealed, reliably associated with pulmonary tuberculosis through intersections of the sets of used plant species. Part of this group consists of diseases that are far from pulmonary tuberculosis in terms of symptoms - malaria, dysentery, hepatitis, dermatomycosis, syphilis, chickenpox, amoebic dysentery, leprosy, etc. In 10 plant families (Polygalaceae, Dipsacaceae, Plantaginaceae, Pinaceae, Trilliaceae, Urticaceae, Urticaceae, Violaceae, Betulaceae, Araceae, Scrophulariaceae), the occurrence of species with use in pulmonary tuberculosis is significantly increased. A ranked list of 55 plant species promising for usefulness in pulmonary tuberculosis has been compiled.

Assessment of weed root extracts for allelopathic activity against Orobanche and Phelipanche species

Broomrapes (Orobanche and Phelipanche species) are holoparasitic weeds that infect roots of crop hosts from Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Apiaceae, Fabaceae, and Solanaceae. The parasitic weeds are difficult to control selectively without crop damage once attached to their roots. Identification of natural compounds with herbicidal activity against pre-attached broomrape stages can provide control alternatives. With the aim to identify plant species with efficacy for broomrape control, organic and residual aqueous phase extracts from roots of seventeen weed species common in south Spanish broomrape-infested fields were assessed as potential inducers of suicidal broomrape germination and as inhibitors of broomrape radicle growth. Assessments were carried out in vitro using seeds and seedlings of four noxious broomrape species, Orobanche crenata Forsk., Orobanche cumana Wallr., Orobanche minor Sm. and Phelipanche ramosa (L.) Pomel. While root extracts from all the weed species did not induce suicidal germination on O. crenata seeds, most of the extracts induced germination of P. ramosa except for those obtained from Amaranthus albus L., Amaranthus retroflexus L. and Convolvulus arvensis L. Moderate levels of germination activity were induced in O. cumana and O. minor seeds by some of the root extracts tested, with strongest induction obtained from Heliotropium europaeum L. on O. cumana seeds, and from Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. on O. minor seeds. For root extract inhibition of broomrape radicles, the extract from C. arvensis roots strongly inhibited radicles of all the broomrape species. While extracts from the other weed species induced low or negligible inhibition of O. cumana and O. crenata radicle growth, many inhibited P. ramosa and O. minor radicles. Exceptions were root extracts from Datura stramonium L., Heliotropium europaeum L., Malva sylvestris L., Solanum nigrum L. and Urtica dioica L., which did not inhibit P. ramosa radicles, and those from A. retroflexus, Datura stramonium L., Malva sylvestris L., Portulaca oleracea L. and S. nigrum, which did not inhibit O. minor radicles. Among the active organic extracts assessed, those showing promising chemical profiles were selected for future studies to characterize natural compounds with potential herbicidal activity on early stages of broomrape growth.

MedicPlant: A mobile application for the recognition of medicinal plants from the Republic of Mauritius using deep learning in real-time

<p>To facilitate the recognition and classification of medicinal plants that are commonly used by Mauritians, a mobile application which can recognise seventy different medicinal plants has been developed. A convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the TensorFlow framework has been used to create the classification model. The system has a recognition accuracy of more than 90%. Once the plant is recognised, a number of useful information is displayed to the user. Such information includes the common name of the plant, its English name and also its scientific name. The plant is also classified as either exotic or endemic followed by its medicinal applications and a short description. Contrary to similar systems, the application does not require an internet connection to work. Also, there are no pre-processing steps, and the images can be taken in broad daylight. Furthermore, any part of the plant can be photographed. It is a fast and non-intrusive method to identify medicinal plants. This mobile application will help the Mauritian population to increase their familiarity of medicinal plants, help taxonomists to experiment with new ways of identifying plant species, and will also contribute to the protection of endangered plant species.</p>

Ethnobotany of medicinal plants in the dayak limbai tribe

The use of medicinal plants by the Dayak Limbai tribe has been going on for a long time, it's just that knowledge related to the use of plants as medicinal ingredients has not been well documented. The aims of this study are 1) to identify plant species that have the potential as medicinal ingredients; 2) describe the part of the medicinal plant used; 3) describe how to use plants as medicine by the Dayak Limbai people. This research was conducted with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collected consisted of the diversity of medicinal plants (local names of medicinal plants, scientific names of medicinal plants, medicinal plant families, parts used, and their utilization). Data collection using structured interview sheets. Data analysis using content analysis. The results obtained as many as 82 types of plants used to treat 64 types of diseases. The most widely used plant species by the Dayak Limbai people are from the Zingiberaceae family.

Diversity of Flower Visiting Beetles at Higher Elevations on the Yulong Snow Mountain (Yunnan, China)

Background: Flowers are one of the important microhabitats promoting beetle diversity, but little is known about variation in the diversity of these insects at higher elevations. We do not know how divergent habitats influence the distribution of beetles among montane flora. Methods: We sampled beetles systematically in angiosperm flowers at 12 sites at two elevations (2700 m and 3200 m) and in two habitats (meadows and forests) for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) on the Yulong Snow Mountain in Yunnan, southwestern China. Beetle diversity among sites were compared. Their interactions with flowers of identified plant species were analyzed using bipartite networks approach. Results: We collected 153 species of beetles from 90 plant species recording 3391 interactions. While plant species richness was lower at the higher, 3200 m elevation regardless of habitat type, beetle species richness was not significantly different among sites. Plant-beetle interaction networks were strongly modular and specialized. The structure of networks showed greater differences between elevations than between habitats. The turnover of networks was determined by species composition showing a weak influence by interaction rewiring. Conclusion: Our study showed a high diversity of beetles in flowers at higher elevations within this mountain complex. The role of beetles in plant–insect interactions within some sections of temperate, montane sites appear to be underestimated and warrant further study.

Digital taxonomist: Identifying plant species in community scientists’ photographs

Automatic identification of plant specimens from amateur photographs could improve species range maps, thus supporting ecosystems research as well as conservation efforts. However, classifying plant specimens based on image data alone is challenging: some species exhibit large variations in visual appearance, while at the same time different species are often visually similar; additionally, species observations follow a highly imbalanced, long-tailed distribution due to differences in abundance as well as observer biases. On the other hand, most species observations are accompanied by side information about the spatial, temporal and ecological context. Moreover, biological species are not an unordered list of classes but embedded in a hierarchical taxonomic structure. We propose a multimodal deep learning model that takes into account these additional cues in a unified framework. Our Digital Taxonomist is able to identify plant species in photographs better than a classifier trained on the image content alone, the performance gained is over 6 percent points in terms of accuracy.

Bird nests as botanical time capsules: DNA barcoding identifies the contents of contemporary and historical nests.

Bird nests in natural history collections are an abundant yet vastly underutilized source of genetic information. We sequenced the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer to identify plant species used as nest material in two contemporary (2003 and 2018) and two historical (both 1915) nest specimens constructed by Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). A total of 13 (22%) samples yielded single, strong bands that could be identified using GenBank resources: six plants (Angiospermae), six green algae (Chlorophyta), and one ciliate (Ciliophora). Two native plant species identified in the nests included Festuca microstachys, which was introduced to the nest collection site by restoration practitioners, and Rosa californica, identified in a nest collected from a lost habitat that existed about 100 years ago. Successful sequencing was correlated with higher sample mass and DNA quality, suggesting future studies should select larger pieces of contiguous material from nests and materials that appear to have been fresh when incorporated into the nest. This molecular approach was used to distinguish plant species that were not visually identifiable, and did not require disassembling the nest specimens as is a traditional practice with nest material studies. The many thousands of nest specimens in natural history collections hold great promise as sources of genetic information to address myriad ecological questions.

Network-based geoforensics: Connecting pollen and plants to place

Despite the potential for pollen to provide key geographic information, law enforcement agencies have historically underutilized forensic palynology. Pollen samples are rarely collected at crime scenes or on objects of interest, and experts needed to manually identify pollen and its morphological characteristics are often in short supply. Fortunately, the advent of DNA barcoding and metabarcoding is poised to change this, enabling law enforcement agencies to easily and quickly identify individual plant species from mixed pollen samples. However, determining the location of pollen deposition based on identified plant species remains challenging, requiring comprehensive plant geodatabases and complex analytical approaches. This type of analysis is also complicated because pollen samples from forensic objects are not comprehensive. Furthermore, while detecting common plant pollen in a sample is likely, common plants provide less explanatory power due to their ubiquity. Thus, we propose a network-based approach to construct a categorization of ‘forensically-useful’ plants – those species that characterize geographically distinct plant mixes quickly for forensic applications and thus provide significant explanatory power to a geolocation model. The developed tool can better inform more detailed forensic search models, significantly reducing their overall computational burden and enabling high-fidelity forensic computational tools to operate faster, at a higher resolution, and over a more extensive study area.
