Presentation of DeMa (Decision Support Software and Database for Wellfield Management) and Its Application for the Wadi Al Arab Wellfield

This article aims to present the structure and the workflow of a new software DeMa (Decision Support Software and Database for Wellfield Management), to support wellfield managers in their decision-making processes. There is a recognized need to improve the management of groundwater resources, especially with the increased demand for fresh water in arid and semi-arid regions. DeMa differentiates from other available software, by combining data collected for the well’s maintenance, operation, design, installations, and cost data with the collected hydrological field measurements. Additionally, DeMa links the different information and provides an effective graphical representation of the data. We applied the software to the Wadi Al Arab wellfield case study to support wellfield managers in the decision-making process of three typical problems: identification of missing data and information concerning the wells, identification of maintenance needs for a well, and identification of a suitable location for a new well. In the application to the Wadi Al Arab wellfield (Jordan), we collected data and documents from the Yarmouk Water Company (YWC), the Jordan Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI), and private drilling companies. The software application highlights the beneficial effects of the digitalization of water resources management by improving data availability and management and achieving data and research-based decisions on the wellfield.

Natural Language Processing of Aviation Safety Reports to Identify Inefficient Operational Patterns

With the growth in commercial aviation traffic and the need for improved environmental performance, strategies to lower emissions that can be implemented in the near term are necessary. Since novel technology takes time to enter the market, operational improvements that employ existing aircraft and require no new infrastructure are fit for this goal. While quantified data collected throughout aviation, such as arrival/departure statistics and flight data, have been well-utilized, text data collected through safety reports have not been leveraged to their full extent. In this paper, a methodology is presented that can use aviation text data to identify high-level causes of flight delays and cancellations, using delays as a metric of operational inefficiency. The dataset is extracted from the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), which includes voluntary safety incident reports in text narrative and metadata formats. The methodology uses natural language processing tools, K Means clustering, and dimensionality reduction by t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) to categorize and visualize narratives. The method identified 7 major clusters and a total of 23 sub-clusters. A comparison between the subclusters’ topics and the causes of flight delays revealed by the quantified data shows that the ASRS database provides a unique safety perspective to delay cause identification, as illustrated by the method’s identification of maintenance as the main cause of delays, rather than weather.

The Hotel is able to maintain the plant condition. The purpose of this research is to identify the vertical garden maintenance system at the Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali. The research method uses survey and literature study methods. Data collection techniques are observation, interview, and literature study. Data analysis methods with descriptive methods and scoring tables. The results about the identification of vertical garden maintenance systems consist of watering, water disposal system, trimming, fertilizing, replanting plants, media replacement, sanitation, pest and disease control. Watering in 2 hours creating high humidity in the media. The volume of water released is not fully experienced evapotranspiration. The planting media do not experience drought during the day, so the plants keep fresh. In the calculation of plant suitability values, the corresponding values are Hemigraphis alternata. Plants with adequate value are Epipremnum aureum, Asparagus densiflorus, Ananas bracteatus tricolor, Schefflera Arboricola, and Portulaca grandiflora. In the maintenance process requires a fertigation system to facilitate fertilization. The use of automated systems such as timmers will simplify the maintenance and a more scheduled.

Standardization of quality control plans for highway bridges in Europe: COST Action TU 1406

In Europe, as all over the world, the need to manage roadway bridges in an efficient way led to the development of different management systems. Hence, nowadays, many European countries have their own system. Although they present a similar architectural framework, several differences can be appointed. These differences constitute a divergent mechanism that may conduct to different decisions on maintenance actions. Within the roadway bridge management process, the identification of maintenance needs is more effective when developed in a uniform and repeatable manner. This process can be accomplished by the identification of performance indicators and definition of performance goals and key performance indicators (KPI), improving the planning of maintenance strategies. Therefore, a discussion at a European level, seeking to achieve a standardized approach in this subject, will bring significant benefits. Accordingly, a COST Action is under way in Europe with the aim of standardizing the establishment of quality control plans for roadway bridges.

Identification of Maintenance Related Issues as Noise Strategy in Building Design

Design of a building focuses on meeting basic needs and cost. It lacks in performance evaluation of the building which is normally translated as the ease of building operation and maintenance. Robust Engineering (RE) method has the ability for building design to focus on clients’ expectation. It improves building performance as it significantly influences product performance in use. High engineered quality is achieved by evaluating the interaction between user environment or noise with control factors. The aim of this research is to identify user environment which is also known as noise during building use and important consideration for better building performance. The research design in this study included an expert panel interview and a questionnaire based survey. Respondents of the expert panel interview are professionals who have experience in building design and maintenance. The questionnaire survey was conducted to identify current design focus, main problems during building operation and key factors to improve maintenance related needs of a building. Findings suggest that improving maintenance related needs in building design seeks collaborative design effort in sharing and translating design information, efficient use of information and effective analysis method, focus on product performance on user environment, sustainable use of resources as an integrated system with low waste generation and development of designer competency. Noise in building design consists of space planning, material selection, equipment selection and integration, and control factor(s) to suit the authorities' approval and supply chain support consideration.

Identification and Tracking of Highway Bridge Maintenance

An overview of practices for highway bridge maintenance of state transportation departments (DOTs) in the United States is presented. DOT practices are given in the areas of identification of maintenance needs, numbering systems for maintenance actions, performance and priority measures related to maintenance, and data systems engaged by maintenance. The overview finds that DOTs have similar work procedures for identification and tracking of maintenance needs and somewhat similar approaches to performance and priority measures, but dissimilar practices in numbering systems for maintenance actions. Most DOTs use one or more individualized data systems to track maintenance work, monitor network-level performance, and evaluate maintenance work plans. The information presented is one product of studies of bridge maintenance decision making and bridge database development.

Inspection and risk assessment of slopes associated with the UK canal network

Abstract Canals in the UK typically comprise artificial channels, with a wide range of embankments and cuttings. These structures often suffer from a range of problems unique to the canal environment including age, wide variation in construction methods and, in the case of embankments, a requirement to retain water. It is the responsibility of British Waterways to regularly inspect and evaluate these slopes with regard to long-term safety and identification of maintenance requirements. A system of slope inspection procedures has been developed which is tailored to aspects of slope stability related to canal structures. This is used in conjunction with a risk evaluation procedure to identify areas of concern on a proactive basis. The results are used to co-ordinate maintenance effort, and identify requirements for more detailed ground investigation.

THE PERA (SS) ROLE IN SUBMARINE LIFE‐CYCLE MAINTENANCE PLANNING

ABSTRACTSubmarine Life‐Cycle maintenance and modernization planning has undergone dramatic and far reaching changes in recent years contributing significantly to the readiness, availability and quality of submarines. These changes emanated through innovative thinking at NAVSEA, the Submarine Type Commanders and PERA (SS). This paper deals specifically with the role of PERA (SS) in conceiving, developing and implementing those changes.The paper outlines a brief history of PERA (SS), discusses submarine life‐cycle maintenance and modernization methodology, and provides a glimpse of evolving innovations that will set the pace for the 1980's and beyond.The paper describes the major programs and products provided by PERA (SS). These include technical maintenance standards for restoration of submarine components; overhaul and restricted availability work packages which consolidate, integrate and define all work authorized by the various customers; hardware and specifically applicable engineering drawings to modernize submarines; complex components for direct change‐out during overhauls; identification of maintenance and modernization material needs; and standarized test documents.
