This study aimed to analyze marriage readiness factors among young adults and to analyze its influences on the marriage age. Samples in this study were 110 college students. Qualitative data of marriage readiness was analyzed using content analysis approach, revealed seven factors that are emotional, role, financial, social, age, spiritual, and sexuality readiness. Quantitative data of marriage readiness was analyzed by using analysis factor, and revealed ten factors that are emotional control, empathy ability, financial, role, age, and sexuality readiness, communication skill, social ability, social cognitive, and tolerance. Based on the two analysis, marriage readiness factors among young adults were emotional (emotional control and empathy), social (social ability, social cognitive, and tolerance), role, communication, age, financial, and sexual. Marriage readiness between male dan female was different, for male the most important was financial readiness, but female was emotional readiness. Ideal marriage age for male was 26,3 and for female was 23,9 years old, but expected age to marriage of male was 26,1 and female was 24,2 years old. Statistic regression analysis showed that marriage readiness influence the marriage age. The increasing of empathy ability and financial readiness influenced on increasing age of marriage. Meanwhile, the increasing of age readiness, sexuality, and communication ability influenced on the decreasing of marriage.

Social Norms and Aspirations: Age of Marriage and Education in Rural India

Summary Using a unique dataset that I collected in three villages in semi-arid India, I analyze the role of perceived returns to education and social norms regarding the ideal age of marriage in the educational plans, i.e., aspirations, parents have for their children. I show that perceptions of the ideal age of marriage significantly constrain the education that parents aspire to have for their daughters, but not their sons. Furthermore, aspirations are sensitive to the perceived returns to higher education in the case of boys, but not in the case of girls.

Social Norms and Aspirations: Age of Marriage and Education in Rural India

Using a unique dataset that I collected in three villages in semi-arid India, I analyze the role of perceived returns to education and social norms regarding the age of in the educational plans parents have for their children. I elicit from parents their perceptions of the returns to various levels of education and their educational aspirations for each child, as well as their perception of the ideal age of marriage for boys and girls. The aspirations data indicate that only 39% of the girls would be allowed to pursue education, compared to 71% of the boys, and that the socially acceptable age of is perceived to be, on average, 18.3 years for girls and 22.7 years for boys. I show that perceptions of the age of significantly constrain the education that parents aspire to have for their daughters, but not their sons. Furthermore, perceived low returns do not appear to explain low educational aspirations for girls. Instead, aspirations are sensitive to returns in a specific way: I find that the returns to higher education are significant determinants of educational aspirations in the case of boys, whereas only the returns to lower education matter for educational aspirations in the case of girls.

Spouse Selection: Important Criteria and Age Preferences of an Iranian Sample

Importance of different criteria and age preference in spouse selection for single and married young Iranian adults was examined. The sample included 104 married (49 male, 55 female) and 112 single (51 male, 61 female) students. A 26-item scale developed for this study included 4 items related to demographic factors, 3 items on preferences for the ideal age of marriage, and 19 Likert-type items asking about criteria important for spouse selection. Analysis indicated that, in Iran, commitment, chastity, refinement, and health are four important criteria for spouse selection among male and female and single and married persons. Also, experience of marriage for married males may increase maturity, social prestige, family background, having a job, and age as criteria for choosing a spouse. On the other hand, marriage experience for females may decrease the importance of social skills, housekeeping, and autonomy for selecting a spouse.

Assessing the correlates of desired family size in Shaanxi, China.

This exploratory analysis of factors associated with Chinese women's fertility desires uses data on married women between the ages of 18 and 35 who live in Shaanxi Province, China. Analyses using an economic framework found that both rural and urban couples who intended to sign, or who had already signed, the one-child certificate reported wanting significantly fewer children. However, in rural areas (where 80 per cent of the provincial population lives), education level, living arrangements, participation in an arranged marriage, attitudes regarding the ideal age for marriage, and knowledge of the reasons for the government's fertility policies appear to play a relatively larger role in shaping fertility preferences.

An investigation into the problems of the ages of marriage and reproduction.

Using results of a 6 month 1981 extensive social survey in urban districts of Beijing Municipality this paper shows that there is not only a tendency for young people to shift their actual marriage age to an earlier time but also, their earlier marriage does not necessarily result in earlier reproduction. The key to the success of this work of separating marriage and giving birth after a proper interval lies in propaganda and education. Based on their answers to the question "what do you think is the ideal age for marriage," most young males preferred to get married at 24, 25, and 26 years, with 25 as the peak of desired marriage age. Young females mostly choose to get married at 22 through 26; the desire to get married after 26 declines sharply. The ideal marriage ages indicated by the unmarried youth, though earlier than the actual marriage ages of the married young people, are later than what the married ones desire. The overwhelming majority of people become pregnant and give birth promptly after marriage. More than 70% of the married young couples investigated became pregnant and gave birth within 1 year of their marriage; those who believed it "ideal" to get pregnant and give birth within 1 year of the marriage only account for 25% of those surveyed. 1 of the main factors for both husbands and wives to delay giving births is their need to save some money to avoid economic hardship cause by immediate births after marriage. Overall, there exists a marked difference between the actual times of the 1st births of married young people and their ideal times of 1st births.
