The neurobiology of curiosity as a lesson for teachers

The central idea of the present text is to show that in the formation of the students of tomorrow's world, a fundamental role belongs to the idea of curiosity. Scientific knowledge has recently become, thanks to technological development and the increasingly computerized era, a way of life in which the skills to understand and handle the applications and software increasingly present in everyday life have become inherent requirements of a life quality. Therefore, there is a need for education based on scientific knowledge to be much more present in the school curriculum of the students who will form tomorrow's society. Perhaps one of the most effective means by which students benefit from a science education is the systematic stimulation of native curiosity. We show some ethological and neurological foundations of curiosity that we consider sufficient for a reformulation of standard pedagogy.

Comparative Analysis of the Most Frequent Verbs and Their Derivatives in the Text of the Qur’ān and Modern Standard Arabic

In the current paper basing on the available online resources the morphology and semantics in the Qur’ān as well as the distribution of morphological models in suras and their role in depicting basic ideas of the sacred text are analyzed. Every stage of the study of the Qur’ān requires appropriate approaches and often unparalleled solutions as well as new research tools. The study of the peculiarities of the Qur’ānic text in some cases is possible only with the use of the methods of the interdisciplinary research, both traditional ones as well as newly emerging digital technologies. The current research is a continuation of the earlier works of the authors which address the quantitative analysis of the morphology of the language of the Qur’ān. The indicators obtained earlier are compared with the new results about frequency of masdars and participles of the derived forms in the sacred text. The results of a comparative analysis are illustrated by graphs and diagrams. In this research authors analyze the development of the vocabulary of the Arabic language in diachrony on the basis of various thematic corpuses of texts. As an object of the corpus research the most frequent 15 verbs in derivatives in the text of the Qur’ān are considered. Using the Arabic language corpus, the frequency of these lexemes, as well as in subsections related to the media and Islamic discourse, is analyzed. The results of this research allow to take a new look at the verbal morphology of the sacred text of the Qur’an as well as to set new goals and research objectives.

An Investigation into the Textual Meaning in Academic IELTS Sample Essays

The textual meaning, which is embodied in the structure of a clause as a message, is one of three types of meaning that all natural languages possess. Textual meaning relates to the construction of text, the organization of ideas in a coherent text. The research is intended to identify the textual meaning manifested in Academic IELTS sample essays with band scores of 7 - 7.5 in the light of Functional Grammar. The linguistic components realizing the textual meaning include cohesion and thematic structure. A descriptive method accompanied by qualitative and quantitative approaches is used to give a detailed description of the textual meaning in relation to the IELTS band descriptors. 90 sample essays with band scores of 7.0-7.5 from published books and official IELTS websites are selected as data for text analysis. The findings reveal that cohesive devices are properly used and information is logically arranged in different thematic patterns in the sample essays. It is noticeable that the prevailing types of Themes deployed in the essays are multiple Themes, demonstrating high levels of English proficiency of IELTS writers in constituting a message. It is hoped that the findings of this research will provide insights into salient thematic patterns of Academic IELTS sample essays and appropriate use of cohesive devices, whereby IELTS test-takers can make good use of appropriate strategies in order to produce concise and coherent pieces of writing.

Fact-Driven Abstractive Summarization by Utilizing Multi-Granular Multi-Relational Knowledge

Abstractive summarization generates a concise summary to capture the key ideas of the source text. This task underpins important applications like information retrieval, document comprehension, and event tracking. While much progress has been achieved, state-of-the-art summarization approaches often fail to generate high-quality summaries to reproduce factual details accurately. One of the key limitations of existing solutions is that they are primarily concerned about extracting facts from the source text but overlook other crucial factual information, such as the related time, locations, reasons, consequences, purposes, participants and involved parties. Furthermore, the current summarization frameworks are inadequate in modeling the complex semantic relations among facts and the corresponding factual information, leaving much room for improvement. This paper presents <sc xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">FFSum</small> , a novel summarization framework for exploiting multi-grained factual information to improve text summarization. To this end, <sc xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">FFSum</small> constructs an individual fine-grained factual graph with multiple relations among facts and the corresponding factual information. It employs a fact-driven graph attention network to integrate multi-granular factual representations at the encoding stage. It then uses a hybrid pointer network to retrieve factual pieces from the graph for the summary generation. We evaluate the <sc xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">FFSum</small> by applying it to two real-world datasets. Experimental results show that the <sc xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">FFSum</small> consistently outperforms a state-of-the-art approach across evaluation datasets.

Embodying Narratives of Altered Protagonists: A Reading of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Adapted by Tanika Gupta

The need to revisit Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations in an adaptation as a play by Tanika Gupta serves as a renewal of the classic story that signifies the depiction of complex human relationships and its accompanying emotional turmoils. The play in its artistic capacity effectuates a profound rendition, proving to be a workmanship whittled in the fine art of storytelling. It is a story that is redrawn and retold in a compelling tale of love andsearch for identity and its accompanying erasures as its major leitmotif. The plot of the play foregrounds individual tales that we encounter in the consequence of colonial history. In the play, Pip’s centrality as a protagonist, is of someone whose journey of life is mired in the upheavals of love and poverty. Though his decision towards a realisation to become “a gentleman”, in terms of acquiring ‘mannerisms ‘like that of the English, appears to be life changing. However, for Pip, the act of ‘becoming’is a self-defeating act and a decision that has tragic ramifications. The paper focusses on the idea of literary texts and their parallel adaptive coherence that gives impetus to the origination of qualitative ideas as art forms that find a natural embrace with each other. The adaptation also seeks to embody a certain theatrical origination by way of putting the novel within the scope of a vibrant discourse of life’s meanings through stage space. Texts finding a mutual correspondence, is in a way directed to dilate progressive ideas through the stage, is bestexemplified through Tanika Gupta’s adroitness as a playwright.

Immediate recall as a secondary text: Referential parameters, pragmatics and propositions

Since the process of recalling combines comprehension and speech production, it is viewed as an extremely complex though understudied linguo-cognitive phenomenon. Recalls as secondary texts or text derivatives are also considered to be a good material to explore cognitive aspects of secondary texts production, information conversion procedures and types of transformations of primary texts. The notion of secondary texts also implies multiplicity, as an original text may be retranslated into numerous secondary texts different in quality and degree of completeness. The purpose of the study is to model the propositional secondary retold texts and to identify the specifics of the recipients interpretation of the main event in the text. It is aimed at discriminating the differences between the primary expository text and its 134 immediate recalls produced by 15-year old native Russian speakers. In order to reveal the specifics of the propositional content of a primary expository text and its recalls, their recipients used the following methodological operations: the description and interpretation of the semantic roles of the first and second arguments aligned to predicates on the basis of the verbs semantic properties; the employment of the psycholinguistic model of the utterances generation; the characteristic of memory as a complex of cognitive and mnemic processes; the definition of cognitive-semantic discourse structures; and the understanding of a proposition as a stable component of an utterance independent of the surface grammar. The comparison of the original text and its recalls with the use of innovative denotative maps enabled us to define successful and unsuccessful expression of propositional structures and the main idea of the original text. The classification of texts includes four groups based on the number of the reproduced propositions and types (weak or successful) of the reflection of the primary text denotative card. The authors designed and successfully implemented an innovative 11 stage-algorithm of revealing patterns of a printed text comprehension and its immediate recalls including the primary visual perception of the text, its primary interpretation, reading, encoding, reflection, preparation for an oral presentation, desobjectivation (distribution of semantic roles), interpretation, reflection, oral implementation and text. The work fills in certain gaps in the research, such as the specifics of immediate recalls production, identification of changes in propositional structures of immediate recalls, and expanding the corpus of semantic roles similar to Frame Net. The findings can be successfully applied in natural language processing and linguistic didactics.

An analytical translation study of social linguistic aspects in Dominiga's Arabic version

The aim of our current research is to analyze the socio – linguistic aspects such as (age, gender, place, time, race, proper names, food names, moral and educational values) in the translation of Dominiga's novel by the Spanish writer Gonthaloa Torrenta Payster (1999). The translator's way of conveying those values to readers of young ages and youth. In this analysis, we have relied on the classification of the humanities and English translation, Andrew Chesterman. This classification includes sixteen variables, and each of these variables has a default value that has been classified into 4 groups which are (balance variables, language variables, translator variables and finally structural frame variables for the translated text). We raise several questions, including:&#x0D; - What are the considerations that the translator should take into account when translating for children and youth?&#x0D; - What knowledge and sciences must a translator possess in order to convey the main idea of the original text to readers of young ages and youth?&#x0D; - Is it possible for anyone with sufficient linguistic knowledge to translate a work directed at children and youth, or does he need to be familiar with the psychological, mental and social aspects of this category of readers?&#x0D; Each society has its own customs, traditions, ideas and beliefs that distinguish it from other societies. Here , the translating must take into account these aspects when translating any literary work from one language to another , especially if this work is intended for children , adolescents and youth , due to the importance and danger of these age stages and their impact on the formation of the personality of the child and young person , and directing it towards the right direction and avoiding all stories and novels that carry ideas that contradict the concepts and beliefs of the society in which the young reader lives . Therefore, the researcher wants to present through this research information, observations, analysis and strategies that the translator used when translating these aspects, and whether he used the correct method in translation or not.

The Use of Metadiscourse Markers in English Applied Linguistics Research Proposals by Vietnamese Postgraduate Students

Metadiscourse (MD) markers are of great importance in expressing the writers’ stance, and the use of MD markers can be diverse in different genres of writing. This study endeavors to scrutinize the use of MD markers (major groups: interactive markers and interactional markers) in research proposals by Vietnamese postgraduate students in English Applied Linguistics (EAL). A cohort of 20 EAL research proposals was analyzed using AntConc software and descriptive statistics. The results unravel that regarding interactive markers, transition markers are the most used in EAL research proposals while endophoric markers are the least commonly used. Concerning interactional markers, self-mentions markers are the most popular MD markers while attitude markers are the least popular ones used in EAL research proposals. It is further found out that the most common functions of MD markers used in EAL research proposals are to link ideas in texts and texts to readers and show the writer’s presence in the text. Reception through Polemics: The Internalization of Theological Otherness in Jerome’s Heresiology

Abstract Early Christian heresiology is, like polemics in general, a genre that has commonly been negatively perceived in scholarship. There is an idea of heresiological texts as not only historically unreliable, but also unproductive, in contrast to the creative thinking that can be found in theological treatises. Considering the understanding of heresiology as reactive and exclusive, it is not surprising that heresiological works have seldom been examined in reception studies. The present article wants to challenge the idea of heresiological work as merely rejecting heresies in the defence of a pre-existing orthodoxy, by applying a dialogical reading to the work Adversus Iovinianum by Jerome of Stridon, a treatise in which he defended the superiority of virginity over marriage against Jovinian’s idea of the equality of all the baptized. Building on the understanding of dialogue expressed by Mikhail Bakhtin, as well as his concept of hybridity, the article analyses how Jerome, instead of simply rejecting core elements of Jovinian’s ideas, such as the goodness of marriage and the natural condition of human beings, rather reappropriates them and integrates them into his making of orthodoxy. The result is a hybrid construction in which anti-ascetic arguments are integrated in a rhetoric of asceticism.

Multi-Document Text Summarization using Fuzzy Logic and Association Rule Mining

Information is very necessary. The huge quantity of information on the Internet makes text summarization research increase rapidly. Text summarization is the process of choosing significant sentences from one or multi-document without losing the main ideas of the original text. In this paper a new multi-document English text summarization was proposed, which is based on linguistic and statistical features of the sentences. The extracted features fed to the fuzzy logic system, then the Apriori algorithm used for association rule extraction. The proposed model is performed using dataset supplied by the Text Analysis Conference (TAC-2011) for English documents. The results were measured by using Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation(ROUGE). The obtained results support the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Difficulties faced by 11th grade students in the production of summaries: redefinitions for teaching practices in the classroom

The summary genre is considered an important tool for the retextualization process. Students are the protagonists when building their knowledge and learning, the functioning of texts in favor of development of metacognitive processes to ensure autonomous and permanent learning. The objective of this work is based on research that uses interpretative procedures of a qualitative nature on the teaching–learning process. The methodology involved 17 students in the eleventh grade of a public school in north Portugal and the textual and discursive strategies used by these students within a perspective of autonomy of the summary genre, aiming at observing the relationship with language learning. The analysis presented judgment difficulties regarding the essential and secondary ideas of the source text used. It was observed that 62% of the students presented an unsatisfactory level of appropriation of the source text and only 32% had a satisfactory level of reading comprehension

IMPACT OF MACHINE TRANSLATION ON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION ABILITY: SOUTH EASTERN UNIVERSITY OF SRI LANKA AS A MODEL

Machine Translation (MT) is a unique tool in the field of translation. It is used all over the world. In accordance with, the undergraduates who are following Specialization in Linguistics and Translation at the department of Arabic language from South Eastern University of Sri Lanka face obstacles when they translate between Tamil, English &amp; Arabic. Due to, they focus on MT to translate. According to this, the current research aims to identify the impact of MT on their translation activities. This research uses the descriptive analysis methodology. Primary data were collected from observation and questionnaire that was given to the undergraduates who are following Specialization in Linguistics and Translation at the department of Arabic language from South Eastern University of Sri Lanka in the academic year 2018/2019. Secondary data were gathered from research papers, books, research articles, and websites. The findings of this research declares that the undergraduates in the selected area have desires in the translation field and face the obstacles when translating. Thus, they try to use MT for getting accurate translation, idea of the source text, understanding the unknown words. Due to it, they couldn’t omit the MT in their translation activities. Because, it is easy to use and helps to save the time. At the time, they assume that non-use of MT will effect negatively in their translation ability.

المقدس الشکلي في النص الکرافيکي الحديث The formal sanctity in the modern graphic text

تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى البحث والتعرف على المقدس الشکلي وفکرته في النص الجرافيکي، ولکون رموز المقدس الشکلي من الأمور المهمة الداخلة في النص الکرافيکي لأغلفة المجلات، فضلا عن کونه وسيلة اتصال بصرية تعکس فکرة المعتقد وقدرة المقدس الشکلي، وانتظم البحث في فصول عدة، جاء الفصل الأول بتحديد لمشکلة البحث: ما هو المقدس الشکلي في النص الجرافيکي الحديث. تتضح أهمية البحث من خلال إفادته للجهات ذات العلاقة بالتصميم والإخراج الجرافيکي, فيما حدد هدف البحث في تعرف المقدس الشکلي في النص الجرافيکي الحديث. واهتم الإطار النظري بثلاثة مباحث: المبحث الأول: المقدس والمفاهيم المرتبطة به، المبحث الثاني: مفهوم المقدس الشکلي، المبحث الثالث: المقدس الشکلي في النص الجرافيکي، وختم الفصل بمؤشرات الإطار النظري. أما الفصل الثالث: لقد تضمن وصف وتحليل (3) عينات بحثية، وجاء المنهج الوصفي التحليلي کمنهج متبع في البحث، ولغرض تحليل العينات تم الاعتماد على محاور التحليل، وکانت على النحو الآتي: 1-بنية تصميم المقدس الشکلي والعناصر الشکلية في النص الجرافيکي. أما الفصل الرابع، فقد تضمن عرضا للنتائج والاستنتاجات التي توصلت إليها الباحث: 1-ارتکزت بنية المقدس الشکلي لأغلفة المجلات على (الصور-النص الکتابي-اللون-الفضاء) في جميع العينات؛ إذ تضامنت هذه العناصر فيما بينها لتشکل بيئة تصميمية مناسبة لإنتاج المقدس الشکلي. 2-حقق حضور المقدس الشکلي في الرموز الدينية والاجتماعية من خلال تعبيرات متباينة ترکز في أعماق العقيدة الإنسانية. Abstract: This study aims to search and know the formal sanctity and its idea in the graphic text because the symbols of formal sanctity are very impotant which are implied in the graphic text of magazines, paper covers,Also, its being visual communicatior means which reflects the idea of ideology. Benefit to the the authorities who may concern with designing and grapgic direction,other wise, it indicates the aim of the research in getting acquainted with the modern graphic text. The theoretical framework focuses on three themes,the first theme/the concepts and the concepts which relate to it, the second theme:the concept of the the formal sanctity,the third theme/the formal sanctity in the graphic text/the chapter is ended with indications of the theoretical framework. Thus,the third chapter include description and analysis of (three)researchable samples in order to analyse the samples,in order to analyse the samples,we have depended on axes of analysis,It appears in this way: 1-Structure of deaign of the formal sanctity and formal sanctity and formal elements in the graphic text. The fourth chapter,it also include presentation to the results and conclusions which the researcher get them. 1-The structure of formal sanctity pf the magazines, paper covers on (pictures,texts,colours open space)in all samples,the elements equally to form suitable designing environment to form the formal sanctity. 2-The presence in of formal sanctity in the religious and social symbols by different expressions focuson humanterian creed.

Defining Aspects of the Logical Subject into the Sentence

Although linguistics, the science of language, has reached a high level of development, anyway in syntax there are still many unsolved problems. A very important problem is the one that identifies the parts of the sentences. Therefore, because of inconsistent application of principles, at the analysis of language acts, at the syntactic level, sometimes the extreme structural-grammatical formalism is reached, which, as a result, superimpose parts of sentences over parts of speech, the criterion which conducts to a morphological interpretation of syntax. Such a syntactical analysis is useless, because it makes impossible the real identification of text ideas. Grammarians, situated on morphological positions in syntax, are launching different methodological versions this way. One of them would be that the grammar case form is decisive for identification of the parts of sentences. Such a method is less applicable in Romanian, because at the same grammatical form of the case we have several syntactic functions and at the same function - several forms. In this study the author tries to analyze these morphological and syntactic aspects by demonstration, referring, in particular, to the semantic-syntactic status of the logical subject in the sentence.

Problems Faced by the Students at Grade Eight of SMPN 14 Palu in Reading Recount Text

The purpose of this research is to investigate the reading recount text problems faced by grade eight students of SMPN 14 Palu. In this research applied descriptive design. The research subject was grade eight students of SMPN 14 Palu. The number was 24 students taken from eight classes by using random sampling technique. The data of the research were collected by carrying out the interview, test, qustionnaire and observation activities. The result of this research indicate that students lack of vocabulary, students find it difficulty to determine main idea in reading text and students find it difficulty to pronounce words when reading texts.

A Case Study of Critical Approach Based Ideological and Political Teaching in English Text

Based on the content of the Critical Approach and category of text in the textbook, this paper attempts to discuss how to use the Critical Approach to explore the writer’s intention in the text which also indicates the ideological and political idea in the text. In order to find out the feasible teaching method, this paper chooses the excerpts as the case study. From the detailed analysis of the case, we conclude that the Critical Approach can help us find out the ideological and political ideas in learning text.

An Analysis Reading Difficulties of Narrative Text in Online Learning at the Tenth Grade Students of SMKN 4 Jambi in Academic Years 2019/2020

Reading is the process of receiving interpreting information in language from via the medium of print. The purpose of this research is to analysis reading difficulties of narrative text in online learning by using Edmodo. The objective of this research is to identify the students’ difficulties. The research conducted at SMK N 4 Jambi in academic years 2019/2020. The population of this research is tenth grade students of fashion class II. Type of the research is qualitative the data were obtained by using online interview. Overall, the result of this research is most of the students have difficulties in understanding narrative text by using Edmodo application which the students argued that the explanation of the generic structure, language feature, finding main idea of the narrative text and students’ vocabularies are limited. But the difficulties could be solved by Edmodo communication tools which the teacher and all students could make the discussion about their difficulties, especially in learning reading narrative text.Keywords: Reading difficulties, Narrative text, Online Learning.

Islamic Poems by Rukun Nasution (1928-1998): Themes and Social Relevance

This study analyzes two poems written by Rukun Nasution (1928-1998), namely Syair Pengajak Solat (Invitation to Prayer) and Doa/Syair Menjelang Pajar (Invocation/Poem before Dawn). This manuscript only came to the attention of the authors in 2018, and this is the first time the book of poetry is being studied and described. The main objective of this study is to analyze the content of the poems, with reference to their socio-religious relevance and some philological aspects. Rukun (the popular name of Rukun Nasution) wrote his poems in the 1960s using Latin script, and the fact he had no formal education other than a three-year of elementary school made his creative productivity more interesting. He presented his ideas in a well-structured text while applying the 'aa-aa' rhyme consistently. The poems contain Islamic messages, with prayer procedures being the most dominant theme. These poems are relevant to document religious information, disseminate Islamic teachings, while remains artistically creative.

Translation quality in English-Arabic translation of tourist texts: A product perspective

Translation of tourist texts engenders textual, linguistic and cultural hurdles before achieving translation quality, which has not been given due account in translation studies. To bridge this gap, this study aimed to assess postgraduates' performance in translation of tourist texts from English to Arabic and vice versa, using a translation task (Arabic and English tourist texts) and a questionnaire. The questionnaire took a form of a 5-point Likert scale in which the students rated the texts they translated. Further, it retrieved information about translation time and postgraduates' translation experience. Findings revealed low translation quality and inappropriate use of translation procedures in rendering the tourist texts into English and Arabic. The postgraduates encountered hindrances in formulating the main ideas of the source text (ST), composing the target text (TT) and communicating the TT to the target language (TL) readers. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications have been discussed.
