The transition of the 19th century to the 20th century known as the flowering period of the printed mass media in the West and the colonies. Similarly, in the Dutch East Indies, in the turn of the century, many publications are created, written and read by the architects who come to enjoy this print technology development in order to always be able to follow the progress in the Netherlands. At the turn of the century it was known four publications that circulated among architects in the Indies. Ideologies and interests with each of them carrying, mixing, and developed the ideas of architecture are increasingly different from the original. This process is in line with the development of the ideas of nationalism in a society that demands the assertion of identity in the form of nation-state nation Indonesia. This study surveyed the development of the contents of the four publications related to architecture in the Dutch East Indies, which is the method of Discourse Analysis, found patterns of discourse that lies behind the development of architectural identity discourse in the aftermath of Indonesia's independence.

“Im Taktischen”: Figures of Touch in the Work of Walter Benjamin

The essay aims to uncover the somehow overlooked sensorial faculty of tactility in Walter Benjamin’s epistemology of images. Not only is “Das Taktische” transposed into the critical mode of reception characterizing modernity, but the meaning of the tactile, inciting a destructive relation to the integrity of the optical, lies in a certain attention to organic and non-organic decay underlying Benjamin’s meditations on the inexpressive acoustical dimension of language. According to the “Work of Art” essay, the medium, or the idea of architecture is dominated by tactility. Tree physiology optimization on SISO and MIMO PID control tuning

The tuning of proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller is essential for any control application in order to ensure the best performance by step change or disturbance. This paper presents the tuning of PID controller for single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) control systems using tree physiology optimization (TPO). TPO is a metaheuristic algorithm inspired from a plant growth system derived based on the idea of plant architecture and Thornley model (TM). The basic principle of TM simplifies the plant growth into shoots and roots part. The plant shoots grow towards sunlight with the help of nutrients supplied by the root system in order to undergo photosynthesis process, a process of converting light photon into carbon. The carbon gain from the shoots extension will be supplied to the root system in order for the root to grow and search for water plus nutrients. As a result, the nutrients are supplied upwards towards shoot system for further extension. This concept runs iteratively in order to ensure optimum plant growth. The iterative search of shoot towards better light supported by the root counterparts leads to an optimization idea of TPO algorithm. TPO also has a unique exploration strategy due to its multiple branches and shoots that can be defined by user. This concept may improve the search mechanism with a better trade-off between diversification and intensification search. A simulation of SISO control system and an industrial application of MIMO control are applied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and compared with other optimization methods such as particle swarm optimization, Ziegler–Nichols, Tyreus–Luyben and Chien–Hrones–Reswick methods. The results clearly exhibit the capability of TPO algorithm towards finding the optimum PID parameters for SISO and MIMO process with faster settling time and better performance with respect to other methods.

Daydream Continent: Europe as a Space-Time Horizon in Architectural History

This article defends an attention to past meanings of ‘Europe’ as a prospective idea, focusing on the circulation of architectural ideas between European states and settler territories in late colonialism. It proposes research that questions the relation between present-day European architectural expertise and ‘Europe’ as a colonial space-time horizon. The latter term denotes how past colonial futures, understood as circulatory formations, entailed an imagination of social spaces that was never fully actualized, acting instead as a guiding device. Drawing on archival research in South Africa and in Mozambique, the article examines how during the Second World War architects in the region projected a ‘European’ space that, while being envisioned in contrast to an unequal non-European space, was not simply a propagation of coeval space-time in European cities. In addition, it notes how professional discourse in the 1960s articulated the hierarchies of development that structure the domain of Europeanness. However, the article does not stress the mere denunciation of ‘Europe’ as integral to colonial rationality, recalling instead the potential of prospective ideas as a form of open daydream.

Renewable Energy and Smart Hybrid Strategies for High Performance Architecture and Planning in Case of Tehran, Iran

It is significant to adopt renewable energy systems in building industry as one of the most important sectors in energy consumption. Level of energy consumption in building industry in contemporary architecture of developing countries such as Iran enjoys much more interest than other parts especially developed countries. Literature review of the research show that adoption of renewable energy systems has a lot to do with politics, policies, law, finances and market. While renewable energy finance and energy economics is in need of building sector to focus on adoption of renewable energy systems more than other sectors. It is very important to explain that high-performance architecture and planning requires some kinds of combined strategies to enhance the level of energy efficiency. The main scope of the research is to show concept of smart hybrid strategies for high-performance architecture and planning in case of Tehran, as one of the most important and efficient factors toward efficient adoption of renewable energy systems. The most important questions of the research are: 1- How socio-cultural and economic aspects of developing countries affect the idea of energy efficient architecture and planning? 2- What are the most important characteristics of high-performance architecture and planning for developing countries? Regarding to the hypothesis of the paper: 1- The idea of energy efficient architecture and planning in developing countries requires combined and smart hybrid strategies to meet energy efficient architecture and planning. 2- Smart hybrid strategies for high-performance architecture and planning consists of smart ventilation, photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, thermal storage, isolated building systems, low-e windows, efficient envelope and hyper - controlled openings.

THE SIMULATION OF NATURE EFFECT ON SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN

The idea of simulating nature and its impact on sustainable design is a useful idea to maintain ecological balance, which is a vital subject in the face of the phenomena that threaten our planet. The research discusses the effect of architectural thought on the simulation of nature and its impact on the sustainability of the urban environment. Which aims to measure and evaluate the simulation of modern environmental projects of nature in the Arab environment through compatibility with the principles and ideas of nature simulation architecture, and then practical application of the evaluation model to measure the nature simulation architecture on some projects The study ends with a comparative analysis of the selected projects in order to identify the most simulated nature and use it as a model for measuring environmental projects in the Arab region.

West of Japan/East of Europe: Translating Architectural Legacies and the Case of Bruno Taut\u2019s Hyuga Villa

Based on communications presented at the international symposium ‘West of Japan/East of Europe’, hosted by the Department of Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in concomitance with the exhibition ‘Bruno Taut’s Hyuga Villa in Atami, Japan’, this text discusses the question of cultural translation in architecture departing from the example of Hyuga Villa, realised by Taut in 1936. Despite the inherently immobile status of architecture, architectural ideas travel widely, as well as their conceivers, the architects. The cultural passage implicit to translation is never flawless, though. Hyuga Villa offers a good case in point, since it was conceived by an architect who had only a partial grasp of local culture and who tried to integrate elements of both Western and Japanese design. But what are the implications of ‘translating’ architecture? Can we translate not only words but also images, details, building conventions, even aesthetic sensitivities? And is everything translatable? Applied to an artifact recognised today as an important testimony to the encounter between Western and Eastern design cultures, these questions relate to issues that are central to the debate on both architectural history and built heritage, proposing an alternative approach in terms of method and scope.

The design of white and the architecture matter

La edición en arquitectura: cultura de la edición <em>vs</em> cultura del libro

Aunque existe una extensa bibliografía sobre la cultura del libro de arquitectura y pese a que el mundo de las revistas de arquitectura ha despertado gran interés en años recientes, la cultura de la edición de arquitectura en su conjunto es un vasto territorio aún por descubrir como objeto de estudio. Las identificaciones recurrentes de la edición con la publicación o el diseño gráfico y editorial han creado una nube de equívocos que dificulta su problematización. Aportando unas primeras reflexiones sobre el fondo, el alcance y las implicaciones –así como la diferencia– de la edición de arquitectura en particular, este texto se acerca a ella a través de seis «definiciones» complementarias: la edición como forma, como lógica antagonista, como exigencia, como lugar, como ensamblaje y como ensayo. Concebidas como invariables a través de las cuales reconocer la especificidad de la edición más allá de las transformaciones tecnológicas de la industria editorial –desde la aparición de la imprenta hasta el desarrollo de las nuevas tecnologías– y como guion para indagar en la especificidad de la edición de arquitectura en particular, estas aproximaciones buscan deshacer los mencionados equívocos, situándola y contextualizando sus aportaciones en el contexto más amplio de la edición como trabajo intelectual y labor cultural de poso histórico.

Realism Reflected in Aldo Rossi′s Architecture: Focusing on Rancière′s Discourse on Realism

This article examines realism in architecture based on Aldo Rossi′s architectural works and Jacques Rancière′s discourse on realism. Rancière views realism as an artistic capacity that gives impetus to new art rather than as a specific art movement. In addition, he considers realism not only in terms of this role in the history of art but also in terms of its aim even today to discover new aspects of art among art and non-art, that is everyday objects. This view is comparable to the idea of architecture espoused by Aldo Rossi. Rossi discovers the boundary between architecture and non-architecture in the process of searching for the architectural archetype, the hut (cabin). Furthermore, he proposes architecture that diverges from architectural methods, placing high value on his personal viewpoint and expression in architecture. In spite of the negative evaluation of his later architectural works, Rossi′s architecture can be viewed as realism since they connect architecture with ordinary objects that are beyond the level of architecture. This article elaborates why the discourse on realism in architecture and the prospect of Rossi′s architecture are still valid today.

Implicit in the development of parallel programming language using Visual Basic

Several studies have been performed to investigate the benefits of parallel programming models, and compared the models with same language family. The parallel technique is applicable only when the programmer has a single computer with multiple processors to perform various tasks individually or the programmer number of different computers connected by a single network. Parallel programming model in computing is an idea of parallel computer architecture. This research introduced the concept of parallel programming models and languages. The present research mainly focused on the different parallel programming models proposed by previous researchers using distinct programming languages. Through analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of various programming models used for parallel computing, a new model is developed. Along with this, the concept of OOP (Object-oriented programming) in the context of parallel computing is also discussed. This research proposed a model named as Asynchronous Dynamic load Balancing (ADLB). ADLB model used MPI as avehicle for library implementation rather as an end-user programming system.

Coupling architectural synthesis to applied thermal engineering, constructal thermodynamics and fractal analysis: An original pedagogic method to incorporate “sustainability” into architectural education during the initial conceptual stages

This paper describes an original didactic approach to integrate sustainability and building applied thermal engineering methodology with the architectural education. It presents the pedagogical and scientific dimension of a seminar-workshop that has been conceived in order to accomplish the aforementioned objective. Three educational models of architectural synthesis have been converged to common methodology. According to the present educational program's guidelines complex volumes have been produced, while an evaluation engine was created on the basis of simplified calculation models, in order to provide formal modifications, evaluate the formal solutions and choose the optimum solutions preserving the initial architectural idea. In its final stage, the project featured the refinement of the conceptual architectural design focusing on the energy consumption aspects. As a result of this pedagogical project, it was observed that the adopted methodology produced reliable results for the pedagogical purpose in the nine projects that consisted the direct output of the seminar, while the creativity of the participants has been preserved during the entire process. Furthermore employing constructal thermodynamics we investigated the architectural quality of the produced volumes. However, a direct perspective of the presented approach could be to extend this method until the detail scale in order to offer to it more temporal importance in the schedule of the discipline.

The Crux of Minimalist Architecture: A Local Strategy of Housing Design in Jakarta or a Break Free from Traditions?

During the 1950s, the idea of Minimalism presents itself as one of the response of the search of universal language in art and architecture. This particular style, which was started as an art movement, has received many critics in the relation to the loss of art but nevertheless Minimalism has spread all over the world and influenced many disciplines, including architecture. In minimalist architecture, elements of design convey simplicity, basic geometrical forms, with no decoration, and the use of white color, modern materials and clean spaces. The “less is more” movement in architecture, which can be seen in the works of Mies van der Rohe and also in the International Style that celebrates materiality and rationality, is also understood as Minimalism. Moreover, an important historical connection to minimalist architecture is the relationship to popular representations of how the upscale modern family lived. Recently, the idea of minimalist architecture appears in Indonesia as a preferable housing style. Adapting minimalist architecture to be suitable for a tropical climate can be done partly by modifying the forms and the microclimate such as using passive system approach or additional equipment that creates comfort in the building. This paper investigates the idea of minimalist architecture in Jakarta, Indonesia, and how the idea is widely used for housing. Some questions related to this study are investigating whether minimalist architecture in Jakarta shares the same principles with minimalist architecture in its earlier time or it is only a trend in housing design. Not only this study analyzes the moment when the idea of Minimalism develops in the history of modern architecture but also some important characteristics of minimalist architecture in different era and space. In addition, this study also discusses how minimalist architecture that happens in Jakarta becomes a way of dealing with both modern and local conditions, including a break free from traditions.

Drawing matter: Plan

Over the course of an intensive day-long session, the authors combed the Drawing Matter archives for exemplary plan drawings. Their selections are presented here in pairs, based on visual rhymes or striking contrasts, on cross-historical comparisons or the persistence of plan-making techniques over time.The architectural plan drawing is a paradoxical sort of object. In principle, an instrument that should be rendered obsolete by the act of construction, it nonetheless remains the most intensive and compact description of an architectural idea.‘Plan’ is a verb as well as a noun, and implies a path toward a specified outcome. The plan is fundamentally optimistic, countering entropy with order, and this anticipatory quality is embedded in the logic of the plan itself. Architects make drawings for buildings that do not yet exist. An architectural plan is an empty geometric scaffold that awaits both construction and inhabitation.But the plan also works retrospectively: it was the primary technical means employed in the measuring and recording of ancient architectures that was so fundamental to the education of a classical architect. And these drawings affirm that such reconstructions, far from being rote academic exercises, draw deeply on the architect's creative intelligence. In fact, we would argue that the conceptual power of the plan as a working instrument is precisely its capacity to function simultaneously as an analytical and projective device, poised between past histories and future possibilities.This collection of images makes a case for the continued relevance of the plan today as evidenced by the diversity, conceptual density and shear visual power of these artefacts.

Geometric abstraction in the architectural inspiration of nature (Vision of design assimilation)

The philosophy of the idea is one of the most important stages of architectural design. It is based on many sources of inspiration, such as nature, architecture, heritage, tools, languages, intellectual philosophies, civilizations and different cultures among the peoples. During the different stages of history, nature was the most important source of inspiration for design. Art, mathematics, astronomy and various different sciences, and man is still trying to excavate in order to know its inherent secrets and learn from them what is useful in the affairs of his daily life, and architecture is one of the most scientific science of nature and the deduction of nature. The architectural form inspired by abstract nature is one of the most glamorous and attractive forms for the recipient to read its mysterious and surprising design content, and some buildings designed in this way have become a symbol and icon known by these countries, such as the Sydney Opera House. Architecture in the Arab world in general and Yemen in particular, suffer from the scarcity of these unique and inspired models of nature, and in some Arab countries, they are almost finger-shaped. Western architects design them. Some of these models are inspired as transport and Tradition. Which contributes to the dissolution of this architectural style, and makes the designers try to move away from it. For fear of failure resulting from the weakness of the process of inspiration. Because there is no general framework. For how to use architectural abstraction in the inspired design of architectural ideas (and here is the research problem). In order to achieve this objective, the descriptive analytical approach was applied to the process of architectural abstraction and comparative analysis of different projects to produce a general framework for understanding and understanding how abstraction is used in the process of design inspiration of nature. The importance of research lies in the discussion of abstraction in architecture in general and architectural design in particular. In addition, its multiple roles in different design practices to lay the foundations and rules for understanding how abstraction can be used to draw inspiration from nature, for the designer to take advantage of them in the production of designs that meet different human needs.

The Identity of Iranian Architecture and the Formation of Fashion Design Ideas

Throughout history, fashion and architecture have repeated each other in terms of form and appearance. It seems quite natural that they share not only their initial function, which is to provide shelter and protect human; but also show skills in creating space and volume beyond the two-dimensional plates and materials. In recent years, the relationship between clothing design and architecture has become more significant. Computer tools and software have changed the borders of designing each one. Buildings are more fluid and clothes are more architectural. The architectural alphabet in fashion from one hand, and on the other hand the fashion ideas and methods used in architecture as well as experiencing similar themes in both domains are among the features of these arts. The exploitation of such common points among the two areas challenges the conventional ideas and pre-defined concepts of design, putting forward new solutions and experiences for designers. In this research, some of these common ideas have been studied and how these ideas are linked within both of these domains. The method of this research is descriptive and analytical; and data are collected from documents and research materials including books, articles, photos and electronic resources. This research seeks the common ideas in architecture and fashion and their mutual interaction with each other and provides some examples in both arts. The results of this research show that architecture has an effective role in shaping fashion and the attitude to the clothing design.

Gambaran Arsitektur dan Teknik Konstruksi Candi Simangambat, Kabupaten Mandailing Natal, Provinsi Sumatera Utara

AbstractSimangambat temple is an unique temple in Northern Sumatera. The research on the temple has been done throughout 2008 until 2010. It successfully revealed the structure of brick and stone building of the temple. Its result is expected to give an idea of temple architecture and construction technique. It is considering that the architecture and construction of the temple can be associated with the character and relative periodization of the temple building .

THE INTRA-NATIONAL STYLE OF CLASSICIST HISTORIOGRAPHY WITHIN AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE

The discovery of Horatio Greenough, the “pioneer of functionalism,” and the reevaluation of his architectural ideas in the mid-1930’s would subsequently affect the architectural debates in the U.S. in the field of historiography. The history of history, as it is called, of national identification in architecture is traced here, through extensive research on the references to him in narratives by the classicist camp towards the first establishment of coherent images of the classic tradition of American architecture both in theory and in practice in 1947, with the investigation into the prehistory when the two they considered contradicted each other.
