Ranger Russet: A long Russet potato variety for processing and fresh market with improved quality, disease resistance, and yield

Ranger Russet, a new full-season potato variety, was jointly released to growers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado on May 14, 1991. Ranger Russet was tested in irrigated performance trials in the Western U.S. since 1979. It produces a large yield of high quality, long, russet-skinned tubers that are well suited for baking and processing into french fries. Ranger Russet is more resistant than Russet Burbank to Verticillium wilt, viruses X and Y, leafroll net necrosis, and Fusarium dry rot. It is highly resistant to hollow heart.

Frontier Russet: A new potato variety for early fresh and processing use with resistance to Fusarium dry rot

Frontier Russet, a new, medium-early potato variety, was jointly released to growers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado on April 9, 1990. It was tested in irrigated yield trials since 1979. Frontier Russet produces a moderately high yield of high quality, oblong to long, cylindrical, russet-skinned tubers. The tubers are well suited for baking and for processing into french fries at harvest. Frontier Russet is resistant to Fusarium dry rot and more resistant to Verticillium wilt than other early russets.

Gemchip: A new potato variety with chipping quality and verticillium resistance for the Western U.S.

Gemchip, a new potato chipping variety, was released jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado on August 9, 1989. Gemchip was tested in irrigated yield and chipping trials in the Western U.S. since 1982. It outyielded Norchip by an average of 23% and Atlantic by 14%, and it chipped well both out of the field and out of storage. Gemchip is moderately late in maturity and resistant to Verticillium wilt.

Verticillium wilt resistant potato germplasm: A66107-51 and A68113-4

Potato breeding selections A66107-51 and A68113-4 (Solanum tuberosum gptuberosum) are being released as germplasm that is highly resistant to Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae Kleb.) These selections have been extensively evaluated for resistance to Verticillium as measured by symptom severity and degree of colonization byV. dahliae. They combine outstanding wilt resistance with good tuber maturity characteristics, high yield, and french fry processing tuber type. A66107-51 has long-oblong, russeted tubers, with high yield and variable processing quality. A68113-4 has long-oblong, partially russeted tubers with high yield and good processing quality. Both selections are fertile as female parents, and A66107-51 is occasionally pollen fertile. The Verticillium resistance of these two clones has been transmitted to progeny. These selections were developed by USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station. Seed is available from USDA-ARS, Aberdeen, Idaho.

Pregnancy-Specific Protein in the Plasma of Captive Muskoxen

We collected plasma samples from 6 captive muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) before breeding and throughout gestation and tested them for the antigen that cross-reacts with antiserum to bovine pregnancyspecific protein B (PSPB). Presence of the antigen in muskoxen provided a reliable method for detecting pregnancy. It was detected in all muskoxen by 24 days of pregnancy but was not found in non-pregnant females or castrate controls. J. WILDL. MANAGE. 53(4):899-901 Accurate detection of pregnancy in free-living mammals is important to wildlife managers (Houston et al. 1986), but techniques developed for domestic species often prove impractical and costly when applied to field situations. This is particularly true of muskoxen, a species widely dispersed in an inhospitable environment. Blood samples collected during immobilization could provide the most practical means for pregnancy detection. Analysis of serum for progesterone has been used for pregnancy detection in a number of wild ungulates (Wood et al. 1986), but the technique requires knowledge of the threshold level for pregnancy determination (Wood et al. 1986) and breeding dates, or several blood samples taken at specified intervals (Sasser and Ruder 1987). Muskoxen are seasonally polyestrus and may normally cycle at least until the end of October (Rowell et al. 1987). Progesterone levels during the first 80 days of pregnancy are indistinguishable from those of the luteal phase (Rowell and Flood 1986), making a single progesterone value, collected during the fall or winter, particularly difficult to interpret. The ability to identify a pregnancy-specific protein in serum would alleviate these problems. Pregnancy-specific protein B has been isolated from bovine extra-embryonic membranes (Butler et al. 1982); it is produced in the binucleate cells of the bovine placenta (Eckblad et al. 1985, Reimers et al. 1985) and a double antibody radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed for its detection in bovine serum (Sasser et al. 1986). Pregnancy-specific antigens that cross-react in the RIA for bovine PSPB have been identified in sera from domestic sheep (Ruder et al. 1988), elk (Cervus elaphus) (Sasser et al. 1985), mule (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (0. virginianus) (Wood et al. 1986), and mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) (Houston et al. 1986). Our study was undertaken to determine if muskox plasma contained antigens that crossreacted with antiserum to bovine PSPB, assess the validity of PSPB assay for pregnancy diagnosis in muskoxen, and assess how soon after conception a positive reaction to PSPB could be detected. The captive muskox herd was established through a grant from the Donner Canadian Foundation and is currently supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Operating Grant A2759 and Infrastructure Grant A2793. Lemhi Russet: A new high yielding potato variety with wide adaptation, attractive tubers, and high internal quality

Lemhi Russet, a new oblong, russet-skinned potato variety, was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, California, Washington, and North Dakota on September 23, 1980. The tubers of Lemhi Russet have been blockier, larger, 6% higher in solids, 50% lower in reducing sugars, and 25% higher in vitamin C than those of Russet Burbank. Lemhi Russet has averaged 34% more U.S. No. 1 tubers than Russet Burbank in 6 years of trials in five states. It was superior to Norgold Russet in yield and specific gravity in early harvest trials. In pilot plant and laboratory trials, Lemhi Russet made excellent french fries, baked well with a mealy texture, but sloughed when boiled. Lemhi Russet has a high degree of resistance to scab and net necrosis, but is susceptible to potato viruses S, X, Y, and to the leafroll virus. It is also susceptible to bruising and blackspot.

Disease Resistance in Beans

The inefficacy and cost of many of the chemical bean-disease control measures and the susceptibility of many of the important snap and dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars to damaging diseases stimulated interest in the United States in the development of resistant bean cultivars through breeding. Early epidemics of bean diseases in certain sections of the country and the later discovery of physiological races or strains of many of the causal organisms proved the hopelessness of growing susceptible bean cultivars. None of the American bean cultivars used commercially before 1918 was disease resistant. The first disease-resistant cultivar, Robust, was developed by F. A. Spragg of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station in 1915 (117). A white, pea-bean type, it resisted the common bean mosaic virus. The next resistant cuitivar, Great North­ ern University of Idaho (VI) I, developed 'in 1929 by Pierce and Hungerford of the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station, was resistant to the same virus and was a selection from the mosaic-susceptible common Great Northern. Wisconsin Refugee and Idaho Refugee introduced in 1934 were the first mosaic­ resistant snap bean cultivars developed by hybridization (95). These were followed by the release of United States (US) 5 Refugee in 1935 (124). About 35 disease­ resistant dry bean cultivars and 120 snap bean cultivars have been developed in the United States by seed companies, State Experiment Stations, and the US Depart­ ment of Agriculture. The greatest progress in breeding for disease resistance in beans has probably been the development of common mosaic-resistant cultivars of both dry and snap bean types. Unless a newly released cultivar is resistant to the type strain of the virus and to a widespread variant strain, generally known as the New York 15 strain, it is not well accepted by growers, the seed trade, and the bean processing industry.
