A modification of the BEI method previously introduced by the author is described. The main feature of this modification is the utilization of a new extraction-filter the use of which shortens considerably the time required for serum extraction with no loss of over-all methodological precision. Average time required for analyzing 6 samples is 3.5 hr, and 24 samples can be run in 7 hr. With this modified procedure, quantitative recoveries of thyroxine iodine or free iodide added to sera were effected. A normal range for 250 patients was established between 3.0 and 7.0 μg per 100 ml serum with a mean ± S.D. of 4.5 ± 1.1 μg per 100 ml. Bilirubin was found not to interfere with the analysis although in highly icteric serum (total bilirubin 16.3 mg per 100 ml) recovery of added thyroxine iodine was slightly lower than in normal serum.
