Long-term Satellite-derived Bathymetry of Arctic Supraglacial Lake from ICESat-2 and Sentinel-2

Abstract. The polar ice sheets serve as natural thermostats, regulating Earth’s temperatures. The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), the second-largest ice sheet, is a critical indicator of climate change and global warming. Estimating the volume of supraglacial lakes on the GrIS, which is directly linked to the extent of melting in the Arctic ice sheet, requires information on both lake area and water depth. Conventional bathymetric methods (i.e., airborne bathymetric LiDAR, shipborne echo-sounder) are commonly used for accurate water depth measurement. However, polar supraglacial lakes face challenging conditions, leading to uncertainties in their spatial and temporal distribution. To overcome the limitations, this study combines Sentinel-2 and ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2) to estimate bathymetry and detect changes in lake volume on the GrIS from 2019 to 2023. Firstly, Sentinel-2 images were pre-processed, and ICESat-2 single-photon LiDAR points were extracted using the DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) method, followed by the bathymetric corrections as the training data. Subsequently, three bathymetry models (i.e., log-linear, log-ratio, and BP (Back Propagation) neural network) were constructed using Sentinel-2 images and ICESat-2 data. Lastly, the highresolution ArcticDEM (Arctic Digital Elevation Model) was used as the validation data to assess the satellite-derived bathymetry accuracy. In this study, the log-ratio model yielded the best results with the R2, RMSE, and MAE of 0.92, 0.79 m (lower than 10% of the maximum depth), and 0.62 m. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the integrated active and passive remote sensing approach for bathymetry in Arctic supraglacial lakes.

Surface Elevation Change Monitoring Based on ICESat-2 Satellite Altimetry Data

The ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2), launched by NASA on September 18, 2018, offers higher precision in surface elevation monitoring. This study aims to investigate the surface elevation changes over different time periods in the Delong and Bulianta open-pit mines in Wulanmuren Township, Ordos City, using ICESat-2 laser data. The study utilizes the spatial distribution information of each photon from ATL03 (terrain elevation data) and the classification information of each photon from ATL08 (vegetation canopy height and surface elevation data) to extract surface photon elevation data for different periods in the same area. The precision of ICESat-2 satellite elevation data is validated using the on-board radar data from Henan Polytechnic University's Feima unmanned aerial vehicle D2000 in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province.Results indicate that in the No.1 area of the Delong open-pit mine, the surface subsided by approximately 16.3 meters between November 14, 2019, and November 10, 2021, due to soil removal operations. In the No.2 and No.3 areas of the Bulianta open-pit mine, the surface was uplifted by 3.1 meters and 13.6 meters, respectively, between May 16, 2019, and August 13, 2020, due to backfilling after mining. Additionally, the No.4 area was uplifted by about 10.5 meters between November 14, 2019, and November 10, 2021.Furthermore, the accuracy assessment yielded the following results: R2=0.956, RMSE=0.324, and MAE=0.105 meters, indicating that ICESat-2 data can be used as scientific data for inverting surface elevation changes.

Potential and performance for classifying Earth surface only with ICESat-2 altimetric data

The huge volume of data from the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), designed for mapping polar ice, sea ice, and continental vegetation, requires a highly automated data analysis and reliable terrain classification. In particular, we have developed a method to identify 4 distinct terrain categories in observed terrain, namely ocean, land, sea ice, and ice sheets. This study performed the following efforts: first, the spatial distribution characteristics for each of the 4 categories within individual ICESat-2 “major frames” along the orbit were extracted; second, these features were fed into Classification and Regression Tree (CART) and Random Forest (RF) for training; and lastly, post-processing enhancement was used to improve the classification results. Based on the 76,891 major frame samples (10,764,740 m along track) acquired via various ICESat-2 datasets, the accuracy of the two model were calculated using ten-fold cross-validation. The results indicate that the RF algorithm obtained higher classification accuracy (average accuracy [AA] = 0.9353, overall accuracy [OA] = 0.9342, and Cohen’s Kappa coefficient [kappa] = 0.9122) when compared with the CART algorithm (AA = 0.9066, OA = 0.9057, and kappa = 0.8743). Overall, our approach can effectively reduce the workload of human field investigation or visual inspection of altimetry data, improve the accuracy for Earth surface classification, and add to the variety of ways to obtain global surface information from ICESat-2 data.

Signal Photon Extraction and Classification for ICESat-2 Photon-Counting Lidar in Coastal Areas

The highly accurate data of topography and bathymetry are fundamental to ecological studies and policy decisions for coastal zones. Currently, the automatic extraction and classification of signal photons in coastal zones is a challenging problem, especially the surface type classification without auxiliary data. The lack of classification information limits large-scale bathymetric applications of ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2). In this study, we propose a photon extraction–classification method to process geolocated photons in coastal areas from the ICESat-2 ATL03 product. The basic idea is to extract the signal photons using an adaptive photon clustering algorithm, and the extracted signal photons are classified based on the accumulated histogram and triangular grid. We also generate the bottom profile using the weighted interpolation. In four typical coastal areas (artificial coast, natural coast, island, and reefs), the extraction accuracy of a signal photons exceeds 0.90, and the Kappa coefficients of four surface types exceed 0.75. This method independently extracts and classifies signal photons without relying on auxiliary data, which can greatly improve the efficiency of obtaining bathymetric points in all kinds of coastal areas and provide technical support for other coastal studies using ICESat-2 data.

Extracting shallow water depth from the fusion of multi-temporal ICESat-2 data and multi-spectral imageries

With the development of satellite remote sensing and laser altimetry data, the fusion of laser altimetry data and multi-spectral images for shallow water depth inversion has become an economically convenient way. However, there are few methods that take into account the temporal dimension of data to integrate the results of water depth inversion in multiple temporal phases. In response to this issue, this article proposed a shallow water depth inversion method that integrates multi-source and multi-temporal remote sensing data. This method utilized the random forest (RF) algorithm to estimate the water depth values at different time, taking into account the contextual information of Sentinel-2 imagery and using the overall least squares as the theoretical model to fuse the multi-temporal water depth inversion results. This article took the Yongle Islands in the South China Sea as the research area and conducted the shallow water inversion experiments using ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite 2) data from 5 temporal phases and one Sentinel-2 imagery. The results show that the mean value of RMSE (root mean square error) and R2 (determination coefficient) of the proposed method using single temporal imagery was 1.53m and 0.7610, which outperformed the inversion accuracy of traditional methods that ignore image context information. The RMSE and R2 of the multi-temporal fusion model was 1.15m and 0.8622, which was 0.08m and 0.0199m higher than existing median filtering fusion method.

Deriving high-accuracy lake water-level changes from multi-source satellite datasets

ABSTRACT Satellite data have exhibited a great potential to track lake water-level changes. By integrating multi-source satellite datasets (i.e., Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) lidar datasets, Landsat imagery, and Global Surface Water Dataset (GSWD)), we proposed a method to track annual water-level changes of Lake Mead, USA over 1984–2018. Specifically, we first extracted ICESat-2 profiles as elevation information. Second, we used Landsat imagery to extract annual lake boundaries and calculate lake areas. Third, we constructed the relationship between elevations and inundation frequencies provided by the GSWD for ICESat-2 points, and applied it to extract annual water levels by using inundation frequency of Landsat derived lake boundaries. Finally, we created the relationship between lake water level and lake areas via a cubic polynomial model to refine the annual lake water levels. Our water level results agreed well with the in-situ data (R 2 = 0.99, p < 0.01, RMSE = 0.64 m). Our results showed that the ICESat-2 data performed well in providing accurate elevation information around the shore of lake. Using satellite datasets, our proposed method has the potential to derive water levels for water bodies worldwide in the future.

Genetic Programming Guided Mapping of Forest Canopy Height by Combining LiDAR Satellites with Sentinel-1/2, Terrain, and Climate Data

Accurately mapping the forest canopy height is vital for conserving forest ecosystems. Employing the forest height measured by satellite light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems as ground samples to establish forest canopy height extrapolation (FCHE) models presents promising opportunities for mapping large-scale wall-to-wall forest canopy height. However, despite the potential to provide more samples and alleviate the stripe effect by synergistically using the data from two existing LiDAR datasets, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), the fundamental differences in their operating principles create measurement biases, and thus, there are few studies combining them for research. Furthermore, previous studies have typically employed existing regression algorithms as FCHE models to predict forest canopy height, without customizing a model that achieves optimal performance based on the current samples. These shortcomings constrain the accuracy of predicting forest canopy height using satellite LiDAR data. To surmount these difficulties, we proposed a genetic programming (GP) guided method for mapping forest canopy height by combining the GEDI and ICESat-2 LiDAR data with Sentinel-1/2, terrain, and climate data. In this method, GP autonomously constructs the fusion model of the GEDI and ICESat-2 datasets (hereafter GIF model) and the optimal FCHE model based on the explanatory variables for the specific study area. The outcomes demonstrate that the fusion of the GEDI and ICESat-2 data shows high consistency (R2 = 0.85, RMSE = 2.2m, pRMSE = 11.24%). The synergistic use of the GEDI and ICESat-2 data, coupled with the optimization of the FCHE model, substantially improves the precision of forest canopy height predictions, and finally achieves R2, RMSE, and pRMSE of 0.64, 3.38m, and 16.08%, respectively. In summary, our research presents a reliable approach to accurately estimate forest canopy height using remote sensing data by addressing measurement biases between the GEDI and ICESat-2 data and overcoming the limitations of traditional FCHE models.

Effect of leaf-on and leaf-off canopy conditions on forest height retrieval and modelling with ICESat-2 data

ABSTRACT Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) provides effective photon-counting light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data for estimating forest height across extensive geographical areas. Although prior studies have illustrated canopy conditions during leaf-on and leaf-off phases may influence ICESat-2 derived forest heights, a comprehensive understanding of this effect remains incomplete. This study seeks to comprehensively assess how varying canopy conditions (leaf-on/leaf-off) affect ICESat-2 forest height retrieval and modelling. First, the accuracies of ICESat-2 terrain and canopy heights under leaf-on and leaf-off conditions were validated. Second, random forest algorithm was utilized to model forest height by integrating ICESat-2, Sentinel-2, and other ancillary datasets. Finally, we evaluated the influence of leaf-on and leaf-off conditions on forest height retrieval and modelling. Results reveal higher consistency between ICESat-2 and airborne LiDAR-derived terrain heights compared to the agreement between two canopy height datasets. Accuracies of ICESat-2 terrain and canopy heights are higher under leaf-off conditions in contrast to leaf-on conditions. Notably, the accuracies of ICESat-2 terrain and canopy heights under various conditions are closely linked to canopy cover. Furthermore, the accuracy of forest height modelling can be enhanced by combining ICESat-2 data collected during both leaf-on and leaf-off seasons with further eliminating low-quality samples.

Signal Photon Extraction Method for ICESat-2 Data Using Slope and Elevation Information Provided by Stereo Images

Laser altimetry data from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) contain a lot of noise, which necessitates the requirement for a signal photon extraction method. In this study, we propose a density clustering method, which combines slope and elevation information from optical stereo images and adaptively adjusts the neighborhood search direction in the along-track direction. The local classification density threshold was calculated adaptively according to the uneven spatial distribution of noise and signal density, and reliable surface signal points were extracted. The performance of the algorithm was validated for strong and weak beam laser altimetry data using optical stereo images with different resolutions and positioning accuracies. The results were compared qualitatively and quantitatively with those obtained using the ATL08 algorithm. The signal extraction quality was better than that of the ATL08 algorithm for steep slope and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. The proposed method can better balance the relationship between recall and precision, and its F1-score was higher than that of the ATL08 algorithm. The method can accurately extract continuous and reliable surface signals for both strong and weak beams among different terrains and land cover types.

Evaluation and Comparison of ICESat-2 and GEDI Data for Terrain and Canopy Height Retrievals in Short-Stature Vegetation

Two space-borne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) missions, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), have demonstrated high capabilities in extracting terrain and canopy heights in forest environments. However, there have been limited studies evaluating their performance for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation. This study utilizes airborne LiDAR data to validate and compare the accuracies of terrain and canopy height retrievals for short-stature vegetation using the latest versions of ICESat-2 (Version 5) and GEDI (Version 2). Furthermore, this study also analyzes the influence of various factors, such as vegetation type, terrain slope, canopy height, and canopy cover, on terrain and canopy height retrievals. The results indicate that ICESat-2 (bias = −0.05 m, RMSE = 0.67 m) outperforms GEDI (bias = 0.39 m, RMSE = 1.40 m) in terrain height extraction, with similar results observed for canopy height retrievals from both missions. Additionally, the findings reveal significant differences in terrain and canopy height retrieval accuracies between ICESat-2 and GEDI data under different data acquisition scenarios. Error analysis results demonstrate that terrain slope plays a pivotal role in influencing the accuracy of terrain height extraction for both missions, particularly for GEDI data, where the terrain height accuracy decreases significantly with increasing terrain slope. However, canopy height has the most substantial impact on the estimation accuracies of GEDI and ICESat-2 canopy heights. Overall, these findings confirm the strong potential of ICESat-2 data for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation areas, and also provide valuable insights for future applications of space-borne LiDAR data in short-stature vegetation-dominated ecosystems.

Retrieving Sub-Canopy Terrain from ICESat-2 Data Based on the RNR-DCM Filtering and Erroneous Ground Photons Correction Approach

Currently, the new space-based laser altimetry mission, Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), is widely used to obtain terrain information. Photon cloud filtering is a crucial step toward retrieving sub-canopy terrain. However, an unsuccessful photon cloud filtering performance weakens the retrieval of sub-canopy terrain. In addition, sub-canopy terrain retrieval would not be accurate in densely forested areas due to existing sparse ground photons. This paper proposes a photon cloud filtering method and a ground photon extraction method to accurately retrieve sub-canopy terrain from ICESat-2 data. First, signal photon cloud data were derived from ICESat-2 data using the proposed photon cloud filtering method. Second, ground photons were extracted based on a specific percentile range of elevation. Third, erroneous ground photons were identified and corrected to obtain accurate sub-canopy terrain results, assuming that the terrain in the local area with accurate ground photons was continuous and therefore could be fitted appropriately through a straight line. Then, the signal photon cloud data obtained by the proposed method were compared with the reference signal photon cloud data. The results demonstrate that the overall accuracy of the signal photon identification achieved by the proposed filtering method exceeded 96.1% in the study areas. The sub-canopy terrain retrieved by the proposed sub-canopy terrain retrieval method was compared with the airborne LiDAR terrain measurements. The root-mean-squared error (RMSE) values in the two study areas were 1.28 m and 1.19 m, while the corresponding R2 (coefficient of determination) values were 0.999 and 0.999, respectively. We also identified and corrected erroneous ground photons with an RMSE lower than 2.079 m in densely forested areas. Therefore, the results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of sub-canopy terrain retrieval, thus pioneering the application of ICESat-2 data, such as the generation of global sub-canopy terrain products.

High-resolution forest age mapping based on forest height maps derived from GEDI and ICESat-2 space-borne lidar data

Forest age is a key parameter for estimating forest growth and carbon uptake and for forest management. Remote sensing provides indirect but useful information for mapping forest age at large scales. However, existing regional and global forest age products were generated at low spatial resolutions (often 1000 m) and are not useful for most forest stands in China that are smaller than 1000 m. This study aims to map forest age at the 30 m resolution based on forest height maps mainly derived from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data, and analyze the roles of auxiliary data including temperature, precipitation, slope, and aspect in forest age mapping. Forest age is defined as the average age of dominant tree species within a pixel. Five commonly-used stand growth equations and twelve machine learning methods were tested for their suitability for mapping forest age of different tree species. We found that the Logistic equation performed the best among the tested stand growth equations and the Random Forest (RF) was the best among the tested machine learning methods. According to RF, forest height contributed predominantly to the variance in forest age mapping, while temperature, precipitation, slope, and aspect also had an overall non-negligible and variable contribution among different tree species. By integrating the climate and topographical variables, RF was applicable for forest age mapping without classifying the tree species. These results show that forest height maps derived from space-borne lidar data such as GEDI and ICESat-2 data are highly useful for mapping forest stand age, and the methodology developed in this study highlights a perspective for generating national and global forest age products at a high spatial resolution.

Spatially-explicit mapping annual oil palm heights in peninsular Malaysia combining ICESat-2 and stand age data

Oil palm is the most efficient oil-producing crop but its extension leads to increased deforestation in Southeast Asia. Oil palm height enables the quantitative estimation for carbon stock or palm oil yield. Nevertheless, there are still no accurate characterization of oil palm height providing information for the tradeoff between forest damage and carbon stock of oil palm in Southeast Asia. The new generation of spaceborne LiDAR provides large-extent canopy height samples, offering an opportunity for mapping the oil palm height at the regional scale yet with challenge to extrapolate the footprint heights to spatially coherent maps. Here, we proposed a new method by combining Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) footprint data with stand age that is closely related to tree height. We first developed a semi-automatic filtering algorithm to filter the low-quality ICESat-2 data, and used a change detection algorithm to optimize the planting year map of oil palm. Then, an empirical age-height model was derived by linking ICESat-2 footprint canopy height with oil palm age that was used to estimate spatially and temporally oil palm height for the whole Peninsular Malaysia. A validation with independent ICESat-2 footprint data suggests a high agreement for the height estimates in 2020 from the age-height model (R2 = 0.63; RMSE = 1.64 m) with a bias within ±3 m for >90% of the height estimates. Using the age-height model and planting year map of oil palm, we produced the first comprehensive wall-to-wall maps of long-term yearly oil palm height at a spatial resolution of 30 m in Peninsular Malaysia during 2001 through 2020. Our results suggest that the mean height of oil palm in all and regionally-disturbed areas have increased by 10.82 m and 9.29 m respectively during the last two decades in Peninsular Malaysia. Our results indicate that combining stand age and ICESat-2 footprint data has great potential in spatially-explicit mapping regional oil palm height that contributes to a better quantification for regional plantation carbon stock.

A methodological framework for specular return removal from photon-counting LiDAR data

The Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data may contain abundant noise photons induced by specular reflection, which make the signal photon detection and surface elevation extraction challenging, especially on flat surfaces with high reflectivity. However, no efficient algorithm for specular return noise removal has been proposed. Therefore, this study aims to propose a novel methodological framework based on statistical features to remove noise photons induced by specular reflection. First, ICESat-2 data preprocessing was performed to improve the speed and accuracy of subsequent processing. Second, the statistical features of outlier distance were calculated and utilized to filter out noise photons. Third, the specular return noise was removed according to the extreme points in the elevation distribution histogram. Finally, the manually labeled of photons and in-situ data were utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed framework. Additionally, the proposed framework was compared with three existing signal photon extraction algorithms (ATL03, ATL13, AVEBM) for further assessment. The experimental results show that the F1-score of the proposed framework is 99.9 % and the accuracy of water level estimation is extremely high (bias = 0.041 m, and RMSE = 0.082 m). Further analysis demonstrates that our framework has the high robustness because it is not sensitive to input parameter. Meanwhile, the weak beam achieved higher water elevation accuracy than that of the strong beam. Besides, the proposed framework performs better than the existing methods in extracting water surface photons and water level. All in all, the proposed framework has been shown to effectively remove noise photons of specular returns in the raw ICESat-2 data and reduce the underestimation of the water level.

Assessment of ICESat-2’s Horizontal Accuracy Using an Iterative Matching Method Based on High-Accuracy Terrains

The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), launched in September 2018, has been widely used in forestry and surveying. A high-accuracy digital elevation model (DEM)/digital surface model (DSM) for terrain matching can effectively evaluate the ICESat-2 design requirements and provide essential data support for further study. The conventional terrain-matching methods regard the laser ground track as a whole, ignoring the individual differences caused by the interaction of photons during flight. Therefore, a novel terrain-matching method using a two-dimensional affine transformation model was proposed to describe the deformation of laser tracks. The least-square optimizes the model parameters with the high-accuracy terrain data to obtain the best matching result. The results in McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV), Antarctica, and Zhengzhou (ZZ), China, demonstrate that the proposed method can verify geolocation accuracy and indicate that the average horizontal accuracy of ICESat-2 V5 data is about 3.86 m in MDV and 4.67 m in ZZ. It shows that ICESat-2 has good positioning accuracy, even in mountainous areas with complex terrain. Additionally, the random forest (RF) model was calculated to analyze the influence of four factors on geographic location accuracy. The slope and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are considered the crucial factors affecting the accuracy of ICESat-2 data.

Satellite-derived bathymetry combined with Sentinel-2 and ICESat-2 datasets using machine learning

Most satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) methods developed thus far from passive remote sensing data have required in situ water depth, thus limiting their utility in areas with no in situ data. Recently, new Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) observations have shown great potential in providing high-precision a priori water depth benefits from range-resolved lidar. In this study, we propose a combined active and passive remote sensing SDB method using only satellite data. An adaptive ellipse DBSCAN (AE-DBSCAN) algorithm is introduced to derive a priori bathymetric data from ICESat-2 data to automatically adapt to the terrain change complexity, and then we use these a priori bathymetric data in Sentinel-2 images to help build a model between remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) and water depth. Three machine learning (ML) methods are then employed, and the performances compared with conventional empirical SDB models are presented. After that, the results using different Sentinel-2 Rrs band combinations and the effects with and without atmospheric correction on ML-based SDB are discussed. The results showed that our AE-DBSCAN method performs better than the standard DBSCAN method, and the ML-based SDB can achieve an overall RMSE of less than 1.5 m in St. Thomas better than the traditional SDB method. They also indicate that ML-based SDB can obtain a relatively high-precision water depth without atmospheric correction, which helps to improve processing efficiency by avoiding a complex atmospheric correction process.

DEM Generation from GF-7 Satellite Stereo Imagery Assisted by Space-Borne LiDAR and Its Application to Active Tectonics

China’s first optical stereo mapping satellite with a sub-meter resolution, GaoFen-7 (GF-7), launched in November 2019, shows significant potential for providing high-resolution topographic and geomorphic data for quantitative research on active tectonics. However, no studies have evaluated the capability of the GF-7-generated digital elevation model (DEM) for quantitatively studying active tectonics. This study aimed to validate the accuracy of the DEMs extracted from GF-7 stereo imagery, with or without ground control points (GCPs), and evaluated the potential of applying GF-7 DEMs to active tectonics. First, GF-7 stereo images were processed to obtain DEMs with a spatial resolution of 2 m, utilizing three different methods, including block adjustment without GCPs, block adjustment with the aid of Google Earth images and SRTM DEM, and block adjustment with GCPs derived from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data. These three generated DEMs were called GF-7 DEMMethod1, GF-7 DEMMethod2, and GF-7 DEMMethod3, respectively, and were verified by the airborne LiDAR data in the Hasishan section of the Haiyuan fault. Second, the capability of the GF-7 DEMs for identifying active faults, fault scarps, and horizontal offsets was evaluated. Finally, 8 vertical and 13 horizontal offsets were measured based on three different GF-7 DEMs, and airborne LiDAR data were used to verify the measurements’ accuracies. The results indicated that the accuracy of GF-7 DEMMethod1 was the worst and that of GF-7 DEMMethod3 was superior to that of GF-7 DEMMethod2. The GF-7 DEMs could effectively identify the apparent fault scarps and horizontal offsets. The RMSE values of the vertical offsets measured based on GF-7 DEMMethod1, GF-7 DEMMethod2, and GF-7 DEMMethod3 were 0.55 m, 0.55 m, and 0.41 m, respectively. The horizontal offsets yielded RMSE values of 3.98 m, 2.52 m, and 1.37 m, respectively. These findings demonstrated that vertical and horizontal offsets could be accurately measured using the DEMs generated from GF-7 stereo images. Meanwhile, our study indicated that the GCPs derived from ICESat-2 data could be utilized to improve the accuracies of the GF-7 DEM, and the measurements of vertical and horizontal offsets.

A noise removal algorithm based on adaptive elevation difference thresholding for ICESat-2 photon-counting data

Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) has shown great potential for near-shore bathymetry. Unavoidably, the photon data acquired has a lot of noise. In order to remove noise more accurately, a photon denoising algorithm based on adaptive elevation difference thresholding (AEDTA) is proposed under the assumption that the terrain is continuously changing. The algorithm uses a Gaussian function obtained by fitting an elevation histogram to ICESat-2 data for the extraction of underwater photons. Repeatedly count the elevation difference histogram of underwater photons and adaptively determine the threshold. And the final denoised underwater signal photons are obtained. Compared with the conventional clustering method of ordering points to identify the clustering structure (OPTICS), our algorithm achieves better photon detection results for underwater topography for different densities of ICESat-2 data and has the advantage of parameter adaption without human intervention. ICESat-2 data from Ganquan Island, Dongdao Island and Oahu Island were selected for testing, and the ICESat-2 bathymetry results calculated by the algorithm were compared with in situ bathymetry data to assess the reliability and accuracy of the proposed denoising algorithm. The results show that the MAE of the bathymetry results calculated using the ICESat-2 signal photon data extracted by the method ranged from 0.54 to 1.57 m and the RMSE ranged from 0.64 to 1.74 m in different seas. The algorithm can provide high quality denoised data for bathymetric mapping around coastal areas and islands. Meanwhile, the AEDTA algorithm also has a good denoising effect on terrestrial photons, and the effect of cloud shading on the Gaussian fit analysis of ICESat-2 data cannot be ignored.

ICESat-2 Bathymetric Signal Reconstruction Method Based on a Deep Learning Model with Active–Passive Data Fusion

When carrying out SDB (satellite-derived bathymetry) in island area based on ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2) data, it is often found that the ICESat-2 bathymetric signals are partially missing due to the influence of thick aerosols such as clouds and fog. This not only hinders the accurate extraction of the along-track underwater topography, but also restricts the active–passive fusion bathymetry based on ICESat-2 data and multi/hyperspectral remote sensing images. In this paper, aiming at the partially missing ICESat-2 bathymetric signals, combined with passive optical remote sensing images, and based on an LSTM (long short-term memory) deep recurrent neural network model, an ICESat-2 bathymetric signal reconstruction method based on active–passive data fusion is proposed. It is found that this method can effectively reconstruct the local missing bathymetric signals. When the reconstructed ICESat-2 bathymetric data are applied to carry out active–passive fusion and bathymetric inversion, the accuracy indices are better than those of the inversion results of the data with partial missing signals, and the performance is comparable to that of the original data without missing data, which is of great value for the bathymetric application of ICESat-2 data in island and reef areas.

Exploring Photon-Counting Laser Altimeter ICESat-2 in Retrieving LAI and Correcting Clumping Effect

The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) employs a unique multibeam photon counting approach to acquire a near-continuously sampled profile and provides more precise technology for mapping the leaf area index (LAI) at the global scale. The inversion accuracy of LAI is affected by the clumping effect, which has been an open question for spaceborne laser scanning (SLS). Here, we present a segmented method based on the path length distribution model to calculate the clumping-corrected LAI independently using ICESat-2 data. The results showed that the LAI derived by the proposed method with a 200 m segment was consistent with the airborne laser scanning (ALS)-derived LAI, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.37. A satisfactory agreement (RMSE <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$=1.03$ </tex-math></inline-formula> ) was also shown between moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI and ICESat-2 LAI. Moreover, the LAI derived by the proposed method was on average 31.72% higher than the LAIe derived by Beer’s law, which indicated that the proposed method achieved the purpose of correcting the clumping effect. The gap probability was calculated by the 200 m moving window and the path length distribution was obtained by the 1 m moving window as the model input had the highest accuracy. In addition, the limitation of the point cloud data and the time lag of ICESat-2 acquisitions and ALS observations may affect the inversion accuracy of LAI. This study proposed a feasible way to correct the clumping effect and invert LAI independently using ICESat-2 data, which has the potential to characterize vegetation structure precisely at regional and global scales.
