Ice Resistance Model Test Technology for 110K Tanker Adopting FSICR Ice Class IA

Ship model test in ice towing tank is one of the key technologies for the design of ice-strengthened ship, and is the primary measure of determining the ship required minimum engine output power in ice navigation and checking whether satisfies the requirements of ice class rules. Researched the relevant requirements of 1A ice-strengthened ship based on the Finnish-Swedish ice class rules (FSICR), which is minimum engine output power according to the forward form of hull line and according to standard formulas. Studied the technical requirements of ice model test. Determined the minimum engine output power for 110k oil tanker with ice class 1A based on ice model test.

Icing problem of ice-strengthened vessels is an important issue when operating in low temperature environment and it can cause damage to deck machineries and emergency equipments. Many ice-strengthened vessels have since been constructed and operated in accordance with the ice class rules such as Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and so on. Therefore winterization is defined as the preparation of a ship for safe operation. In this research, anti-icing performance tests of weather-tight door have been carried out at various temperature conditions(, , , , ) in the low temperature cold room facility and then, ambient temperature, specimen temperature, electric current and temperature of heating cable were measured during the test operations. This research describes the construction guidelines of weather-tight door based on anti-icing test results to apply to the full-scale vessels.

Tanker design considerations for safety and environmental protection of Arctic waters: Learning from past experience

Oil and gas transportation from the Arctic will have many challenges, but experience available from tanker operations in the winter Baltic can provide valuable information for the industry. The paper reviews data on the operations in the Baltic. It compares the new Polar Class requirements with the Baltic ice class requirements, and discusses design aspects which are not covered by traditional ice class rules.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN METHODS FOR SURFACE SHIPS OPERATING AT THE ICE EDGE

ABSTRACTA methodology for developing local load criteria for ships operating at an ice edge is presented and discussed. The area where pack ice diminishes to the open ocean, the ice edge, offers a challenging design problem. Broken pieces of the pack ice termed ice floes can be driven by waves into the sides of ships, generating large local loads. The details of the ice‐structure interaction are discussed. Statistical distributions of ice impact pressures and force are presented based on measured data. Theoretical predictions of floe impact loads are also presented. A pressure‐area curve is generated from these data and compared with recent ice class rules.
