Al-Akhṭal’s Praise for Yazid Bin Mu’wiyah, the Second Caliph of the Umayyad Dynasty (680-683 AD)

This study intended to uncover the meanings contained in the context of praise in the ode poems of Al-Akhtal “Fa Aqsamtu La Ansā Yadae Al-Dahr” in qāfiyah bā intended for Yazid ibn Mu’āwiyah, the second Caliph of the Umayyad dynasty along with the context behind the text of praise. To reveal the meanings behind the text and the context of al-Akhtal's praise to Yazid, this study used a qualitative analysis method with a balagah and pragmatic approach. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that al-Akhtal in delivering his praise to Yazid used a style of language that was loaded with high eloquent elements, such as the style of terms, tasybīh, metaphor, majaz and kināyah. There were many deixis that could be used to reveal the context of al-Akhtal's praise for Yazid, both persona, time, place, discourse and social, such as the first-person singular nominative case personal pronoun, Umm Malik, Yazid ibn al-Muluk, Aba Khalid, Nu’mān, Ibn Hurrah, the days of Jillaq, Damasqus, Jazair Hamiz, Ahl 'Anah, and others. Al-Akhtal's praise for Yazid bin Mu’āwiyah was influenced by both similar behaviors. Both liked the world of freedom in terms of women and drinking to gain power in cruel ways. In addition, the as a Christian Al-Akhtal got more freedom in his life; while, Yazid did not care about religious values.

Enlazando dos lenguas (separando dos culturas): la continuidad del texto sobre los crepúsculos del cadí Ibn Mu‘ād al-Ŷayyānī

El Liber de crepusculis de Gerardo de Cremona (1114-1187) es la versión latina de un texto perdido sobre el cálculo de la altura de la atmósfera escrito por el cadí Ibn Mu‘ād al-Ŷayyānī, cuestión relacionada con temas de tawqīt (cálculo de las horas). Este artículo presenta la tradición textual árabe de este problema de óptica y las dos ramas tex- tuales principales que han transmitido el texto árabe perdido de Ibn Mu‘ād: 1) Rama latina: el De crepusculis de Gerardo de Cremona y 2) Rama hebrea: la traducción de Samuel ben Judah de Marsella. Se concluye que la alteración del texto realizada por Gerardo de Cre- mona en el proceso de traducción tuvo razones sociolingüísticas y se plantea la pertinencia metodológica de utilizar el concepto de necessitas et utilitas con el fin de alcanzar una ma- yor comprensión del proceso de traducción, no solo como cuestión lingüística que surge debido a la necesidad de los latinos de buscar el saber y el conocimiento en la baja Edad Media, sino como un proceso mixto, cultural y lingüístico, que enlazó dos lenguas: el árabe y el latín, pero que separó dos culturas.

This article focuses Balaghah (rethoric) which objectiv is to express the beauty of spoken and written words. This science had developed since Jahiliyah period (pre-Islam) and continued to grow during the Islamic era. Among many groups developed the science, there was Mu'tazilah with the members such as Bisyr ibn Mu'tamir, al Jahiz, and Zamakhsyari. This groups is known as the adherents of schoolof rational since they put ratio first before texts(nash al-Qur'an and Hadis). They developed this science for propaganda and to confirm their throughts. According to Bisyr there are three requirements for the level of sentences beauty in Balaghah: pronunciation must be clear, easy to be understood, and use qafiyah (structured) well.

Al Muhassinat al Lafdziyyah al-Ma'nawiyah

Study of badi has passed through various phases of the term. Badi 'grow and develop into a big lead and then retreating to his study and pragmatic. The first person credited codify badi 'is Ibn Mu'taz, then badi' is analyzed theby the exciting and challenging to Abdu al-an-Nabulisi Ghaniy formulated more than 160 scientific studied on badi'. Subsequent devlopment of science badi' orientation to orientation decreased pragmatic, not unlike just memorizing rules and unable to come to tadzawwuq balaghi.Study of badi'increasingly leaving only a few studies have considered the main pragmatic language in the Koran dive like the one in the book such as al-al-Wadhihah Balaghah, Jawahir al-Balagha, Jauhar al-Maknun etc.. Balaghah studies are still in existence and is considered the primary will be presented in this article.

The invention of atmosphere

The word “atmosphere” was a neologism Willebrord Snellius created for his Latin translation of Simon Stevin's cosmographical writings. Astronomers and mathematical practitioners, such as Snellius and Christoph Scheiner, applying the techniques of Ibn Mu‘ādh and Witelo, were the first to use the term in their calculations of the height of vapors that cause twilight. Their understandings of the atmosphere diverged from Aristotelian divisions of the aerial region. From the early years of the seventeenth century, the term was often associated with atomism or corpuscular matter theory. The concept of the atmosphere changed dramatically with the advent of pneumatic experiments in the middle of the seventeenth century. Pierre Gassendi, Walter Charleton, and Robert Boyle transformed the atmosphere of the mathematicians giving it the characteristics of weight, specific gravity, and fluidity, while disputes about its extent and border remained unresolved.

The revolt of ‘Abdallāh b. Mu‘āwiya, AH 127–130: a reconsideration through the coinage

‘Abdallāh b. Mu‘āwiya b. ‘Abdallam h b. Ja‘far b. Abī Tālib, great-grandson of ‘Alī's brother Ja‘far, rose up in Kufa in Muharram of 127/October 744. He was defeated by Umayyad forces in 130 (747–748), and killed by Abū Muslim in Khurāsaān. During the two years of his uprising, Ibn Mu‘āwiya established himself in the Jibāl and Fārs, where he appointed governors, collected taxes and struck his own coins. Ibn Mu‘āwiya's coinage is an important source for the revolt, which is among the most important uprisings of the late Umayyad period. It presents evidence for a strong and unified movement, and corroborates the interpretation of a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the ‘Abbāsid Revolution. This article suggests some alternatives regarding the chronology and geography of Ibn Mu‘āwiya's revolt through a re-examination of textual sources and new coinage, and shows the usefulness of numismatics for the historical study of early Islam.

Abstracttitle SUMMARY /title This short treatise by the eleventh century Spanish Muslim, Ibn Mu'dh, presents a unique method for determining the altitude of the atmosphere. The Arabic original is not extant, but the text survives in three medieval versions. Two of them were translated directly from the Arabic: a Latin version possibly by Gerard of Cremona in the late twelfth century, and a Hebrew version by Samuel ben Judah of Marseilles in the fourteenth century. The third is an anonymous Italian version, translated from Latin, preserved uniquely in a fourteenth century manuscript. The Hebrew and Italian versions are edited here.
