The application of PRISMA hyperspectral satellite imagery in the delineation of distinct hydrothermal alteration zones in the Chilean Andes: The Marimaca IOCG and the Río Blanco-Los Bronces Cu-Mo porphyry districts

This study provides an overview of the application of hyperspectral imagery acquired by the Italian satellite mission “PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa” (PRISMA), for mapping hydrothermal and supergene mineral alteration zones associated with different Cu deposits in the Chilean Andes. Study areas include the Marimaca Copper Project in the Naguayán district (Antofagasta Province), hosting Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous iron oxide-copper–gold mineralizations and the Río Blanco-Los Bronces district (Santiago Region) known for its Late Miocene – Early Pliocene copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits. These mineral systems exhibit hydrothermal alteration haloes extending over several kilometers, with upward and outward mineral zonation.To characterize the surface-exposed alteration, the satellite imagery was processed using a multiple feature extraction workflow targeting the relative abundances and compositions of specific supergene and hydrothermal alteration minerals, including Fe-oxides and hydroxides (hematite-goethite), phyllosilicates (micas-kaolinite-chlorite), hydroxyl-bearing sulfates (alunite-natroalunite-jarosite) and epidote. The results reveal a zonation from proximal sulfates (natroalunite to alunite) and Al-rich white mica (ranging from 0.3 km-wide for the area identified to the east of the Marimaca deposit to 1 km-wide in correspondence of the Los Sulfatos deposit, respectively) to distal Al-poor white mica (0.2 to 0.5 km-wide, respectively) and an outer chlorite-epidote zone. In the Marimaca Project area, the structurally-controlled alteration evolves west to east from chlorite-rich to phengitic white mica (Al-poor). A NNE-SSW trending supergene leached cap covers a 6 km-long and up to 2 km-wide area from north to south. Our study documents how spaceborne hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy can support mineral exploration by enabling non-invasive reconnaissance mapping of the outcropping rocks, providing specific targeting information for follow-up field surveys and drilling campaigns.

A contribution to the understanding of the origin of the Ginebra Gold District mineralizations, Colombia

Ginebra´s gold mineralization is hosted by the Ginebra Ophiolitic Massif and the Buga Batholith, in the western flank of the Central Cordillera of Colombia. Gold occurs as disseminations, quartz-carbonate stockwork veinlets and quartz lodes with a strong structural control and are composed by small amounts of sulfides, mostly pyrite, with galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in at least two different deposition events and related to strong sericite-chlorite-epidote haloes, indicative of near-neutral and reduced fluids. Petrography and Raman spectroscopy allowed to identify two main fluid inclusions assemblages primary to pseudo-secondary in origin, both of them aqueous and CO2-rich, with variable N2. Microthermometric analysis indicates the hydrothermal fluids associated with the gold were low saline (0.75-6.22 wt% NaCl equiv.) and presented a minimum trapping temperature ranging from 237.4 to 301.6°C. Petrography and microthermometric results suggest an isothermal fluid mixing and/or H2S loss as the main mechanisms related to gold bi-sulfide/thio-sulfide complexes destabilization and precipitation. Sulfur isotopes indicates a close to zero range (-8.2-+4.8‰), suggesting a restricted fluid circulation through the magmatic rocks of the Buga Batholith and the Ginebra Ophiolitic Massif. Besides, the oxygen and deuterium isotopes from hydrothermal sericite and chlorite accompanying to gold events, indicates a metamorphic origin for the hydrothermal fluids. 40Ar-39Ar dating of the hydrothermal alteration haloes, from El Retiro and La Esperanza, indicates a late Cretaceous-Paleocene age, between 67 and 65 Ma, contemporaneous with a regional strong dextral transpressive deformation related to subduction to obduction and exotic terrane accretion against the north-western part of the South American Plate. Although the hydrothermal fluid characteristics of the Ginebra Gold Disctrict are compatible with both the Intrusion-Related and Orogenic Gold deposit types, the metamorphic nature of the hydrothermal fluids and the tectonic regime at the time of mineralization event, allow us to propose they are compatible with an Orogenic Gold deposit.

Carbon and oxygen isotope microanalysis of calcite in the Permian Kupferschiefer system, Saale subbasin, eastern Germany

The Kupferschiefer district in Central Europe contains some of the world's highest-grade sediment-hosted stratiform Cu (SSC) deposits. In the Saale subbasin (eastern Germany), high-grade sulfides formed via replacement of calcite cement in the continental sandstones of the uppermost Rotliegend (S1), the overlying organic-rich marine mudstones of the Kupferschiefer (T1) and the Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) units. The spatial distribution of the calcite cement, therefore, had a fundamental role to play in the Cu mineralizing system. In this study, we investigate the origin of the calcite cement (and crosscutting calcite veins) using detailed petrography (cathodoluminescence, CL; scanning electron microscopy, SEM), major element chemistry (electron probe microanalyzer, EPMA), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) microanalyses of δ13C and δ18O values in drill core samples (n = 47) from the Saale subbasin. The calcite cement in the S1, T1 and Ca1 has a similar CL response and major element chemistry, suggestive of a common origin. Overlapping δ13C and δ18O values in calcite cement in samples from the S1 and T1 in the Sangerhausen and Wallendorf drill cores also suggest that the calcite cement was derived from fluids of similar composition. The low δ13C values of calcite cement in samples from the S1 (−13‰ to 4.3‰, VPDB) and T1 (−10‰ to 0.7‰) indicates carbonate alkalinity was sourced mainly from seawater-derived fluids and the oxidation of organic matter. The wide range of δ18O values in the calcite cement in the S1 (∼18‰ to 31‰, VSMOW) and T1 (∼ 22‰ to 31‰) samples suggest they are derived from pore fluids with a chemical composition influenced by early diagenetic alteration of detrital clasts, mainly dissolution of volcanic rock fragments, with minor contributions from the influx of meteoric waters and evaporated seawater. The negative δ13C values (down to −15‰) in calcite veins from the T1 and Ca1 indicate sources of carbonate alkalinity derived from organic matter degradation. Our data demonstrate that no isotopic hydrothermal alteration haloes can be inferred from the δ13C and δ18O values in calcite cement associated with the high-grade sulfide mineralization. The lack of systematic isotopic variability in the calcite cement likely indicates the mineralizing fluid flux or temperature was not sufficient to overprint the background sources of isotopic variability, which may help to explain the modest size of SSC deposits in this part of the Kupferschiefer district.

The propylitic alteration in the Ponce Enriquez Gold Mining district, Azuay province, Ecuador: genetic constraints from a mineral chemistry and fluid inclusions study

Wide areas of the Southern sector of Ecuador are characterized by Cretaceous mafic volcanic rocks, pervasively altered by a propylitic mineralogical assemblage with epidote, chlorite, and quartz with minor titanite, illite and prehnite. These propylitically altered rocks host significant gold mineralization in veins, deeply exploited in the last decades. Porphyry Au-Cu deposits also occur in the area. This work focuses on the study of this propylitic alteration to assess the genetic conditions and the relation with the distance from the porphyry system, through the chemical composition of the secondary minerals (particularly trace elements in epidote and chlorite) and fluid inclusion data. The aim is to improve knowledge of the trace element geochemistry of secondary minerals in propylitic alteration and their relationship to the causative porphyry systems. The results of this work indicate that alteration affecting the rocks of the Pallatanga Fm. can be related to the propylitic hydrothermal alteration halo of porphyry copper deposits. Fluid inclusion investigation in quartz veins associated with epidote and chlorite evidenced at least two pulses of hydrothermal fluids characterized by temperature around 345°C for the first one and around 305°C for the second one. The salinity of the fluids is always low (around 1.5 wt% NaClequiv.) suggesting a dominantly meteoric component. Evidence of boiling processes have not been observed. We hypothesize that the hydrothermally altered “green rocks” of the Ponce Enriquez Mining District could be envisaged as the propylitic halo of the Miocene hornblende-bearing Au-Cu porphyry deposits of Gaby-Papa Grande, and discuss the epidote and chlorite trace element composition in this scenario. The results help improving the general knowledge of the propylitically altered rocks in southern Ecuador and add new data for the use of trace element chemistry of epidote and chlorite in mineral exploration elsewhere.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of hydrothermal alteration of the Mianhuakeng uranium deposit in South China: Implications for mineralization and exploration

The Mianhuakeng deposit is the largest granite-related hydrothermal-vein-type uranium deposit in South China and Jurassic biotite granite serves as its primary host rock. However, the hydrothermal alteration and its constraints on uranium mineralization in this deposit are still poorly understood. To address these issues, we present a detailed study on the petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, and mineral chemistry of altered rocks and ores. Based on the field geological characteristics, these hydrothermal alteration halos can be classified into three alteration zones (zones 1 to 3) and one mineralization zone. Alteration zone 1 is the furthest away from the ore body and consists of extensive illitization and minor chloritization, whereas alteration zone 2 has partial albitization and dequartzification. The pervasive illitization, chloritization, and hematitization are considerable in the alteration zone 3 closest to the ore body. The mineralized zone exhibits widespread silicification, hematitization, and local chloritization. The mineralogical properties of chlorite indicate that at least two stages of hydrothermal alterations occurred within the alteration halos. The first one is the pre-ore hydrothermal alteration, which can be found in alteration zone 1. A weakly alkaline, Fe-rich, and Mg-poor fluid gave rise to this stage of hydrothermal alteration. The second one, known as the syn-ore hydrothermal alteration, appears in the mineralized zone that was created by an acidic, Mg-rich, Fe-poor fluid that overprints on alteration zones 2 and 3. The formation temperatures of chlorite from these two stages of hydrothermal alterations are 350–250 °C and 250–150 °C, respectively. Alterations and uranium mineralization are inextricably linked in the Mianhuakeng deposit. Pre-ore hydrothermal alterations improve the efficiency of fluid circulation and the proportion of uranium leaching from uraninite in granite. Uraninite in granites releases removable uranium through hydrothermal alterations to serve as a major source for mineralization. Syn-ore hydrothermal alterations are responsible for the redox reaction between U6+ in ore-forming fluids and Fe2+ released from reequilibration of Fe/Mg-rich chlorite, which results in uraninite (UO2) precipitation from hydrothermal fluids. Here, we suggest that alteration zone 1 with widespread illitization and uranium loss should be considered as the first-line vector for further uranium exploration in the Mianhuakeng deposit, and alteration zone 3 with significant chloritization and hematitization should be the crucial vector.

Unravelling magmatic-hydrothermal processes at Salobo and GT-46 IOCG deposits, Carajás mineral province, Brazil: Constraints from whole-rock geochemistry and trace elements in apatite

The iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits of the northern portion of the Carajás Province, Amazonian Craton, Brazil, were primarily formed at the 2.5 Ga IOCG event. These deposits commonly exhibit wide Fe–K hydrothermal alteration halos (i.e., almandine-grunerite-biotite-magnetite) and display a temporal and spatial association with the 2.5 Ga granitic bodies, particularly in the GT-46 and in the world-class Salobo deposit. However, this association still lacks investigation concerning the metallogenic influence of the 2.5 Ga granitic bodies in the IOCG formation. Within these deposits, ca. 2.5 hydrothermally altered granites are recognized and include the Old Salobo, at the Salobo deposit, and G1 and G2, at the GT-46 deposit. Whole-rock geochemistry combined with petrography has pointed out that the G1 and Old Salobo are represented by granites to monzogranites, ferroan, metaluminous to weakly peraluminous with negative Eu anomaly. On the contrary, the G2 granite seems to represent a distinct body with granite composition, ferroan, metaluminous to weakly peraluminous with positive Eu anomaly. This granite exhibit pegmatitic textures, high Sr/Y ratios and listric-shaped normalized REE patterns, which suggest crystallization under high water contents. These granites primarily plots in the field of the volcanic arc granites, though some shifts towards to syn-collisional granites are observed. Effects of hydrothermal alteration are commonly seen in these granites both in textural aspects and geochemistry. Apatite mineral chemistry studies shows that magmatic signature in apatite is preserved in the G2 granite (G2core apatite), Old Salobo granite (OSA) and in the GT-46 ore zone (OZGT-A apatite), represented by enrichment in LREE and negative Eu anomaly. Hydrothermally altered apatite is recognized in the Old Salobo (OSB) and G2 granite (G2rim) and in the ore zone of GT-46 deposit and (OZGT-B) with depletion in LREE, which suggest that the same fluid might have affected both deposits. Truly hydrothermal apatite crystals from the Salobo and GT-46 ore zones shows high (Eu/Eu*)N values, indicative of high oxygen fugacity and alkaline fluids. Strong HREE depletion of the apatite grains from the central zone of the deposits suggest coeval almandine crystallization in the Fe–K alteration halos and evolved hydrothermal fluids. These results indicate that magmatic and hydrothermal process coexist in the IOCG deposits from the northern sector of Carajás Province. This might suggest that the 2.5 Ga IOCG deposits from the Carajás Province can have formed during the development of wide magmatic-hydrothermal systems.

SAM-HIT: A Simulated Annealing Multispectral to Hyperspectral Imagery Data Transformation

Space-borne hyperspectral imagery data are known for their high spectral resolution in a number of narrow wavelength intervals, which makes these data useful for mineral mapping. However, the available free-of-charge hyperspectral scenes cover only narrow and scattered geographic areas. In contrast, multispectral imagery scenes have a nearly complete spatial coverage and wider wavelength intervals. The low spectral resolution of the multispectral data, however, limits their efficiency in the mineral mapping of small geological massifs or hydrothermal alteration halos. The present contribution presents a new transformation tool (SAM-HIT) to simulate the hyperspectral sensor responses in unscanned areas based on partially overlapping hyperspectral and multispectral scenes. Simulation or prediction of the pseudohyperspectral data is here accomplished by using the simulated annealing linear optimization algorithm, which allows the lowest possible mismatch between the original and predicted data. The high visual and numerical correlation of the resultant data confirms the reliability of the newly adopted transformation. Further, the application of the SAM-HIT to a well-exposed part of the Egyptian basement complex with available hyperspectral data showed high concordance and nearly identical band signatures, opening a new outlook for mineral exploration in vast areas by a nearly automated cost-free means.

Sulfide disseminations and hydrothermal alteration haloes in the Gabal Monqul area, Egypt: Field, mineralogical, and remote sensing studies

Field and mineralogical studies are integrated with multispectral and radar satellite data to unravel the occurrence of sulfide dissemination in the Gabal Monqul area (Eastern Desert, Egypt). This study was motivated by the strong belief that the widespread hydrothermal alteration haloes and sulfide disseminations in this area were ambiguously deciphered as a porphyry-style mineralisation. NE-Elongate bodies of silicified and sulfidized rocks frequently occur at the contacts between andesite-dacite, granodiorite, and porphyritic biotite granite intrusions.Hydrothermal alteration zones are best identified and outlined by employing band ratios (BR) and independent component analysis (ICA) techniques for the distinction between ferric and ferrous iron minerals. If fused with the clay and OH-bearing minerals maps, ferric iron oxides may characterise epithermal and porphyry mineralisation in which ore formation occurs under oxidising conditions. Iron-hydroxide, copper hydro-carbonate (malachite), and hydrous copper phosphate (pseudomalachite) are supergene mineral phases.The resultant processed images show that alteration extends beyond unit boundaries and overlaps different crosscutting lithologies. This observation implies that hydrothermal alteration of the host rock represents a secondary overprint, yet gypsum (±anhydrite) and barite in association with iron oxides and pyrite disseminations pinpoint a porphyry-related alteration assemblage. The poor metal endowment in the potassic alteration zones goes against the supergene enrichment typical of the porphyry mineralisation system and is coupled with the lack of hydrothermal breccia bodies, implying a rather epithermal sulfidation genesis. However, a thorough assay program is required to outline the potential metal-rich lithological unit(s) using XRD and remote sensing investigations that point to zonal alteration anomalies.

Cluster- and PCA-based gamma-ray spectrometry data processing algorithm for hydrothermal alteration haloes mapping

In the present paper a high-resolution gamma-spectrometry data processing algorithm aimed at locating hydrothermal alteration haloes is discussed. On the first stage a cluster model of spatial variation of radioactive background is created using information on natural radioactive elements (NRE) concentrations and numerical geomorphological characteristics. This model allows for good terrain differentiation in terms of its lithological and landscape variability. Mathematical procedure for removal of NRE distribution variance, related to variability of lithology and elementary landscapes, improved radiometry data for mapping zones of hydrothermal alterations. On the second stage we integrated the “corrected” gamma-ray spectrometry data using principal component analysis (PCA). Comparing the acquired factor model with a priori radioactive models of hydrothermal alterations allowed us to differentiate quartz-hydromica and quartz-pyrite-sericite alteration haloes.

Feedbacks between fast brittle faulting, hydrothermal fluid flow, and metal transport within carbonated ultramafics (Ligurian Western Alps, Italy)

The Bisciarelle fault is a brittle thrust crosscutting lherzolite of the Voltri Massif (Italy) and is similar to the historical gold veins of the area. This is a 16-m-thick fault showing a large damage zone and a 4-m-wide hydrothermal alteration halo. Its fault rocks interacted with a hydrothermal fluid and host peculiar Au-bearing zones made of concentric and circular dolomite aggregates, which we call spherulites, and chalcedony. To constrain spherulite genesis, we quantify fluid-fault interactions at Bisciarelle combining field and microtextural data, mass transfer calculations, and a multi-technique analytical dataset including element imaging by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We show that faulting was coupled with significant transfer of H2O, CO2, Ca, Sb, and W from the fault fluid to the protolith, and variable transfers of SiO2 and some trace elements from the protolith to the fluid. This process deposited Au within the spherulites, caused serpentinization and carbonation of the protolith, and weakened the fault localizing subsequent shearing events and providing components for the growth of spherulites and the other fault rocks.We interpret Bisciarelle as a permeable epizonal orogenic vein, which formed fast as a result of dilation and top-to-NE shearing. This fault developed via cycles of fluid pressure build-up, opening, fluid effervescence, and mineral precipitation from a H2O-CO2 hydrothermal fluid. The fluid transported and deposited a suite of metals including Au and interacted with the protolith. A similar mechanism of faulting and reactive fluid flow could have generated the other Au deposits of the area.

Trace Element Geochemistry of Alluvial TiO2 Polymorphs as a Proxy for Sn and W Deposits

The Segura mining field, the easternmost segment of the Góis–Panasqueira–Segura tin–tungsten metallogenic belt (north–central Portugal), includes Sn-W quartz veins and Li-Sn aplite-pegmatites, which are believed to be genetically related to Variscan Granites. Sediment geochemistry indicates granite-related Ti-enrichments, locally disturbed by mineralization, suggesting magmatic and metamorphic/metasomatic titaniferous phases. Therefore, Segura alluvial samples and the geochemistry of their TiO2 polymorphs (rutile, anatase, and brookite) were investigated, and their potential as exploration tools for Sn and W deposits was evaluated. The heavy-mineral assemblages proved to be good proxies for bedrock geology, and TiO2 polymorph abundances were found to be suitable indicators of magmatic and/or metasomatic hydrothermal processes. The trace element geochemistry of Segura’s alluvial rutile, anatase, and brookite is highly variable, implying multiple sources and a diversity of mineral-forming processes. The main compositional differences between TiO2 polymorphs are related to intrinsic (structural) factors, and to the P-T-X extrinsic parameters of their forming environments. Anomalous enrichments, up to 9% Nb, 6% Sn and W, 3% Fe, 2% Ta, and 1% V in rutile, and up to 1.8% Fe, 1.7% Ta, 1.2% Nb, 1.1% W 0.5% Sn and V in anatase, were registered. Brookite usually has low trace element content (<0.5%), except for Fe (~1%). HFSE-rich and granitophile-rich rutile is most likely magmatic, forming in extremely differentiated melts, with Sn and W contents enabling the discrimination between Sn-dominant and W-dominant systems. Trace element geochemical distribution maps show pronounced negative Sn (rutile+anatase) and W (rutile) anomalies linked to hydrothermal cassiterite precipitation, as opposed to their hydrothermal alteration halos and to W-dominant cassiterite-free mineralized areas, where primary hydrothermal rutile shows enrichments similar to magmatic rutile. This contribution recognizes that trace element geochemistry of alluvial TiO2 polymorphs can be a robust, cost- and time-effective, exploration tool for Sn(W) and W(Sn) ore deposit systems.

Principal component analysis and K-means clustering as tools during exploration for Zn skarn deposits and industrial carbonates, Sala area, Sweden

This contribution presents an application of principal component analysis (PCA) and K-means clustering as tools for data dimension reduction and grouping of multivariate, whole-rock lithogeochemical data. The study dataset consists of 64 geochemical variables and measurements of spectrophotometric brightness determined from 181 dolomite marble samples, collected at various distance from two contrasting types of mineral deposits, 1) stratabound, dolomite marble- and skarn-hosted Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide deposits and 2) industrial dolomite deposits. Clustering and PCA outputs are assessed based on spatial distribution relative to known mineral deposits and interpretability using geological domain knowledge, to test if the methods can provide a non-biased classification of dolomite samples which is useful for exploration vectoring. The PCA illustrate that three principle components derived from centered log-ratio transformed data can account for 79.69% of the dataset variance. K-means clustering provide unsupervised division of samples into different groups reflecting relative contents of detrital (siliciclastic-volcaniclastic), biogenic and hydrothermal components in the marble protoliths. Spatial analysis of principal components and K-means clusters reveal systematic distribution patterns relative to known deposits, thus providing an exploration guide. The samples most prospective for Zn-Pb-Ag deposits are divided into groups of ‘halo dolomite’ exhibiting elevated Fe and Mn, and an ‘ore dolomite’ also showing elevated Zn, Pb, Ag, Sb, Hg. This can be reconciled with magnetite and Mn-bearing Mg-silicates and carbonates in hydrothermal alteration haloes, and proximal enrichment in hydrothermal sulphides (galena, pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite). Samples in these groups returned low spectrophotometric brightness, resulting from sulphides and Fe oxides grinding to dark powders during sample preparation, significantly lowering the brightness of powdered dolomite marble, even when occurring in low concentrations. Conversely, a ‘clean dolomite’ group is characterized by low contents of the elements above, high contents of Ca, Mg, Sr and total carbon, low magnetic susceptibility and high spectrophotometric brightness, and spatially coincide with known industrial dolomite deposits. An additional group of ‘detrital-rich dolomite’ is distinct from the other groups in an elevated content of high field strength elements and Al, and intermediate spectrophotometric brightness. This variety represent samples containing a higher content of co-settled volcaniclastic-siliciclastic material in the marble precursor. Assessment of the clustered data in relation to magnetic susceptibility measurements from the same samples show that Halo and Ore dolomite can be differentiated from other dolomite types by geomagnetic methods, hence providing a proxy for their indirect detection during geophysical surveys.

Mineralization and hydrothermal alteration in the Mamão orogenic gold deposit, Andorinhas greenstone belt, Carajás Province, Brazil

The Mamão gold deposit, located in the eastern portion of the Amazonian Craton, northern Brazil, is hosted by mafic rocks of the Mesoarchean Andorinhas greenstone belt. An underground mine was operated in this area by Troy Resources Ltd., which produced approximately 350 koz of gold between 2008 and 2015. The hydrothermal alteration halos are characterized by a distal zone (10- to 80 m wide) with a chlorite-albite-epidote-actinolite assemblage, an intermediate zone (5- to 20 m wide) marked by calcite-albite-chlorite-actinolite-quartz, a proximal zone (0.5–5 m wide) composed of biotite-quartz-calcite-pyrite-(gold) and a quartz vein-hosted orebody zone (0.5- to 6 m wide) composed by quartz-calcite-pyrite-(gold). Geochemical data indicate that the metabasalt, metandesite and metadacite host rocks display a tholeiitic N-MORB signature, suggesting that they were formed in ancient oceanic spreading centers. Hydrothermal chlorite of the Mamão deposit is classified as ripidolite and brunsvigite. Biotite is the main mica and increases in modal content from the distal alteration to the vein zone, displaying compositions within the annite domain. Muscovite occurs as very fine lamellae and is generally located in the intermediate zone of the altered region. Amphiboles are calcium-rich and display compositions mostly varying from hornblende (Mg-hornblende to Fe-hornblende) in the distal zone, to actinolite in the intermediate zone. Sulfidation occurs in all hydrothermal alteration zones, with both fine- and coarse-grained pyrite as the main sulfide phase, and lesser amounts of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, cobaltite and sphalerite. Fine-grained pyrite contains many gold inclusions and is typical of the orebody zone preferentially in close contact with the proximal hydrothermal zone, whereas coarse-grained pyrite (without recoverable gold) occurs in the veins. From the edges to the core of the hydrothermal alteration halos, the As, Sb, Ag and Au contents in the pyrite increase, whereas Pb, Co and Mo decrease. Gold occurs as free crystals (2- to 0.1 mm) disseminated within the gangue or as inclusions in the fine-grained pyrite. Temperature estimated via chlorite geothermometer ranges from 284- to 320 °C, with pressure between 1.12 and 1.34 kbar according to biotite geobarometer calculations for the hydrothermal zones. The C–O–S isotope analyses of the calcite and pyrite from the orebody zone yielded δ13C, δ18O and δ34S values ranging from −4.23 to −3.54‰, 8.60–9.77‰ and 3.37–3.52‰ respectively, which suggests that the hydrothermal fluid is predominantly of metamorphic origin. The εNd (3.0) calculated using isotopic analyses of the metavolcanic host rocks varies between +0.11 and + 4.25. A whole-rock Sm–Nd isochron age of 2952 ± 14 Ma was obtained from the host rocks, while a post-mineralized pyrite yielded a Sm–Nd isochron age of 2446 ± 35 Ma. The deposit exhibits mineralogical and isotopic characteristics consistent with those of orogenic type containing gold-bearing, sulfide-rich quartz veins. The Mamão deposit's host rocks are among the oldest rocks described so far in the Carajás Province. The age of the mineralizing event is limited between 2.95 and 2.45 Ga (probably ca. 2.7 Ga), which is the major metallogenic event of gold-deposit formation in several granite-greenstone terrains worldwide.

Iron and magnesium isotope geochemistry in hydrothermal uranium ore systems: Insights from the Bong Deposit, Canada

The basement-hosted Bong uranium deposit in the Kiggavik region is associated with a broad hydrothermal alteration halo characterized by an inner illite-rich zone and an outer chlorite-rich zone. The uranium-bearing zones characterized by intense illite alteration yield high δ56Fe and δ26Mg values relative to the host rocks, with average whole-rock values of δ56Fe = 0.58 ± 0.15‰ and δ26Mg = 0.61 ± 0.29‰, and clay-size fraction values of δ56Fe = 0.51 ± 0.20‰ and δ26Mg = 0.82 ± 0.09‰. These isotopic values correlate with a decrease in average Fe2+ concentrations (0.47 versus 2.30 mol% Fe2+ in least-altered hosts).The high δ26Mg values reflect intense illite alteration, which preferentially incorporated heavier magnesium isotopes during alteration of both the ore zones and an upper hematite-altered horizon. Although the clay alteration with high δ56Fe and δ26Mg values coincides with the main uranium-bearing zone, the δ56Fe signatures reflect multiple stages of alteration and mineralization. The high δ56Fe values and lower Fe2+ contents of the uranium-bearing zones support leaching of Fe2+(aq) enriched in lighter iron isotopes. Sequential leach δ56Fe experiments also indicate that formation of fine-grained iron oxides/hydroxides with positive δ56Fe values (+0.23 to +0.60‰) in late chemical fronts enhanced the primary positive δ56Fe signatures recorded in ore zones. Near surface samples with similar isotopic signatures provide clues to buried mineralization and support structural disruption of the systems after primary mineralization. Distal geochemical expressions of this system may include enrichment in iron contents with negative δ56Fe values and/or negative δ26Mg whole-rock or clay-size fractions values, reflecting precipitation of the isotopically light iron and magnesium leached during hydrothermal alteration. Although more costly to process, sequential leach δ26Mg or δ56Fe analyses produced greater variance in the ore zones relative to background values and removed anomalous values from carbonate minerals. Isotopic analyses of the clay-size fraction produced results comparable to the final digestion in the sequential leach process but this method in particular requires greater understanding the mineralogical controls on the isotopic signatures.

Application of remote sensing data in gold exploration: targeting hydrothermal alteration using Landsat 8 imagery in northern Portugal

Mapping hydrothermal alteration minerals and structural lineaments using Landsat 8 multispectral imagery provides valuable information for mineral exploration. In northern Portugal, there are several known gold occurrences, but there is the potential to identify new anomalous areas. Gold mineralization occurs in the form of quartz veins and veinlets associated with hydrothermal alteration halos. Fractures are interpreted as conduits for mineralizing fluids, where the interaction between the wall rock and hydrothermal fluids induces compositional variations. Identifying these features is one of the key indicators for targeting new prospective zones of orogenic gold mineralization in the Boticas–Chaves region. Remote sensing image processing methods such as band combinations, band ratios, and principal component analysis (PCA) were implemented to the visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared bands of Landsat 8. The results of this investigation demonstrate the capability of the applied imagery enhancement methods in distinguishing different features and identifying hydrothermally altered rocks. Selective PCA proved to be the most effective and reliable method to identify iron oxides and hydroxyl-bearing minerals, compared to other methods, where a simple imagery analysis has a strong influence of noise and is more challenging to interpret. Enhanced imagery allowed the identification of physiographic characteristics and extracted structural features. The combination of mapped hydrothermal alteration minerals and extracted structural features allowed us to predict potential areas for the mineralization occurrence. This investigation proves that remote sensing can be a cost-efficient and time-saving technique for mineral exploration, and its application in new areas can accurately map hydrothermal alteration and outline potential new exploration targets.

The Neoarchean Conglomerate-Hosted Gold of the West Pilbara Craton, Western Australia

Abstract Recently discovered Au in boulder conglomerate between the Mesoarchean West Pilbara superterrane basement and the overlying volcano-sedimentary stratigraphy of the Neoarchean Fortescue Group in Western Australia has renewed comparisons with the Witwatersrand conglomerate Au deposits in South Africa. As such, this has reignited the question of the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons being linked as part of the postulated Vaalbara continent during the Archean. However, little is known about the origin of the Pilbara conglomerate Au and its host conglomerates, as they are hitherto unstudied, and their formation and/or source is uncertain. Here we present a detailed study on the textures, composition, and sedimentology of one newly discovered Pilbara conglomerate Au deposit at the base of the Neoarchean Fortescue Group in the northwestern Pilbara craton. The Pilbara conglomerate Au occurrences are characteristically Ag-bearing but Hg-poor polycrystalline discoid masses that are overgrown by Au-poor chloritic halos, which are further enveloped by a hydrothermal alteration halo of disseminated Au within chlorite. Both the discoids and the auriferous chlorite halo are Ag bearing, with up to ~9 wt % Ag, consistent with a hydrothermal (orogenic) origin. The discoids do not display any physical or chemical evidence for sedimentary transport; thus, their formation (placer versus hydrothermal) remains unclear. However, the position of the Au in the conglomerate, limited to the basal section of the conglomerate, is difficult to account for in a purely hydrothermal deposit model. We argue the Pilbara conglomerate Au represents a modified placer deposit from a primary orogenic Au source, with surface evidence for sedimentation removed by partial dissolution during later hydrothermal alteration in the host conglomerate and the crystalline basement. While the basal Fortescue Group conglomerate Au shares commonalities with the time equivalent (>~2.7 Ga) Venterspost Conglomerate Formation, which overlies the Witwatersrand Supergroup, inconsistencies remain, with different Au chemistries and tectonic, magmatic, sedimentary, and metamorphic-metallogenic histories of the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons prior to deposition of the >2.7 Ga conglomerate sequences. This collectively indicates the drivers of Au metallogenesis and ultimate Au deposition in conglomerate facies were fundamentally different in the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons.

Environmental Risk and Health Hazardous Substances in Artisanal Small-Scaled Gold Mining in Sekotong, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Gold (Au), copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) are mined within Indonesia’s Archipelago as predominantly a mineral-rich country. Au is the worthiest metals compare to all these minerals over the years. Because of that reason, gold mining is one of major economic activity in Indonesia participated through by large-scale, artisanal and small-scale entities Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) has been a source of chances for employment and subsistence to thousands of people. On the contrary, artisanal small-scale gold mining contributes to serious environmental and health issues for miners, nearby populations, and larger society when the use of mercury (Hg) occurs. This study aims to review environmental risk and health-hazardous substances in Artisanal Small-Scaled Gold Mining in Sekotong, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia which also emphasized geological data from the former study. The results showed that Sekotong’s ASGM area is centered by three hydrothermal alteration halos developing from proximal argillic, distal propylitic and superimposed advance argillic alteration also capped by ore mineralization. A high-dense mineralized stockwork of quartz vein as the main characterization founded. Under those circumstances, pledge local miners around the area to execute the prospects without knowing self-assessment and investigation. In conclusion, Sekotong’s ASGM area became one of the shortlisted areas that investigating the effects of mercury on the environment and people’s health signifies urgently necessary for developing a better solution to eliminate further mercury contamination to the environment in Sekotong’s ASGM area due to the extraction of the prospects before another catastrophe befalls.

A cold-water trap as an essential process for the generation of low-sulfidation epithermal deposits: Geological and numerical studies of the Hosokura deposit, northern Japan

Although low-sulfidation epithermal deposits, including the Hosokura deposit (Ag–Pb–Zn) in the Miyagi Prefecture, northern Japan, are globally significant metal sources, their ore deposition mechanisms are not thoroughly understood . This study aimed to construct a genetic ore deposition model for this deposit by focusing on the richest vein, the Fuji, and test the model using a numerical simulation of the formation and transitions of this fossil geothermal system. It was proposed that the mixing of neutral hydrothermal fluids (~260 °C) ascending through the vein with oxygenated cold groundwater caused early stage mineralization and the transport of hydrothermal fluids into the surrounding host rocks, forming a hydrothermal alteration halo around the vein that results in silicification, adularia alteration, and argillization. The progress of this alteration decreased the permeability of the halo and generated a mushroom-shaped low-permeability alteration halo (LPAH) in permeable zones surrounding the vein. The low-permeability and insulating properties of the LPAH increased the fluid temperature, the vein fluid boiled, and consequently the middle stage mineralization occurred. After a further decrease in LPAH permeability, hydrothermal brecciation resulting from increasing fluid pressure occurred at the top of the vein, resulting in late-stage mineralization. A TOUGH2 numerical simulation tested these proposed processes: early stage cooling of hydrothermal fluids by mixing with groundwater, the development of vapor in the vein by the formation of an LPAH during the middle stage, and an increase in fluid pressure leading to hydrothermal brecciation during the late-stage. The results of the simulation confirmed that a cold-water trap is an essential process for the generation of low-sulfidation epithermal deposits. Mushroom-shaped LPAHs, silicification zones, and brecciated veins caused by cold-water traps have been found in representative low-sulfidation epithermal deposits in Japan, such as the richest Au deposit, the Hishikari. Therefore, identification of cold-water-trap footprints can contribute to the exploration of this type of deposit.

Structural and hydrothermal alteration mapping related to orogenic gold mineralization in part of Kushaka schist belt, North-central Nigeria, using airborne magnetic and gamma-ray spectrometry data

This paper presents an interpretation of airborne magnetic and gamma-ray spectrometry data over a part of the Kushaka schist belt of Nigeria with a view to assess the sub-surface structural framework and hydrothermal alteration haloes that are related to orogenic gold mineralization in the study area. The geophysical analyses performed to improve the quality of the aeromagnetic data for better understanding of the subsurface geology were reduction to the equator, upward continuation, total horizontal derivative, analytical signal, source edge detection, tilt-angle derivative of total horizontal derivative. The analyses performed on the airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data were made on K/eTh, F parameter and deviation of ideal K values (Kd). Deep-seated, brittle–ductile shear/fracture zones with characteristic depth of 428.0–607.6 m and area extent of 15.5 km by 6.5 km that were delineated in the area coincide with beehive of artisanal miners exploiting gold deposits. In this study, subsurface geologic structures, specifically dykes/faults, that trend in the ENE–WSW direction constitute a first-order control on orogenic gold mineralization in the study area. The hydrothermally altered zones mapped in the area indicated they are structurally controlled and closely associated with orogenic gold mineralization. Apart from geologic structural evidences that are controlling orogenic gold mineralization, this study has indicated that hydrothermal alteration mapping is equally important for a promising orogenic gold mineralization mapping.

Hydrothermal footprint related to regional-scale shear zone-controlled scheelite mineralization, Seridó W-skarn system, northeastern Brazil

Tungsten deposits and occurrences in the Seridó Mineral Province represent metasomatic assemblages that differ from the garnet-diopside skarn deposits described in the area. The six W(±Mo ± Au) selected for study show no spatial association with carbonate rocks or igneous intrusions, but are strongly controlled by regional-scale N20°E-trending shear zones formed during the Neoproterozoic-Ediacaran (ca. 615 Ma to 530 Ma) Brasiliano Cycle. Throughout the area, this orogenic event affected both basement and supracrustal rocks, forming scheelite-bearing rocks in both domains. The alteration process is characterized by three mineral associations: (1) diopside-amphibole-feldspars (DAF), (2) amphibole-feldspars (AF), and (3) biotite-rich (BR); and each deposit or occurrence may present one, two or all mineral assemblages. Some of the studied locations are also spatially associated with the mineralized garnet-diopside skarns (MGDS) of the province, where the three mineral associations generally occur tens to hundreds of meters below them. These associations represent a continuously evolving system that records changes in physicochemical properties over time. These changes are documented by mineral chemistry analyses for pyroxene, amphibole, feldspars, biotite, epidote group minerals, titanite and apatite. Earlier, higher temperature metasomatism enriched the system in Mg, Fe, Ca, Ba and REE, whereas later, lower temperature stages are characterized by an enrichment in Na, K, Si, W and Mo. The studied mines and occurrences provide important information on the distal, deeper hydrothermal alteration haloes of tungsten skarn deposits in the Seridó Mineral Province.
