Impact of biomass burning on air quality: A case study of the agricultural region in South Korea

Various combustion processes occur concurrently during biomass burning events, emitting a complex mixture of particulate and gaseous pollutants into the atmosphere. These emissions undergo chemical transformations facilitated by factors such as solar radiation and cloud formation, thereby altering the composition of aerosols. Additionally, these pollutants can affect the region of origin and neighboring countries, presenting regional and global environmental challenges. Therefore, precise evaluation of the particulate and gaseous pollutants emitted during biomass burning is essential to formulate effective management strategies. This study aimed to assess the concentration and chemical characteristics of particulate matter emitted during biomass burning in South Korea. On June 7, 2021, a research flight was conducted utilizing a High Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) and a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) for airborne measurements over South Korea inland areas. For data analysis based on administrative regions, the flight path was divided into four major areas (Areas A, B, C, and D). During the research flight, evidence of biomass burning events was observed primarily in Area C. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis categorized the organic aerosols (OA) into five factors: biomass burning OA (BBOA), hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA1, HOA2), low-oxidized oxygenated OA (LO-OOA), and more-oxidized OOA (MO-OOA). Across all areas, MO-OOA accounted for the highest proportion of aerosols, whereas BBOA dominated in Area C at 23.8%, indicating the significant influence of biomass burning in this region. Instead of running a PMF analysis with all measurement data, a BBOA formula was derived from the previous study and this one. This allows us to estimate BBOA concentration without running PMF.

Residential Wood Burning and Vehicle Emissions as Major Sources of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) play an important role in aerosol effects on air quality and public health, but their atmospheric abundance and sources are poorly understood. We measured EPFRs contained in PM2.5 collected in Fairbanks, Alaska, in winter 2022. We find that EPFR concentrations were enhanced during surface-based inversion and correlate strongly with incomplete combustion markers, including carbon monoxide and elemental carbon (R2 > 0.75). EPFRs exhibit moderately good correlations with PAHs, biomass burning organic aerosols, and potassium (R2 > 0.4). We also observe strong correlations of EPFRs with hydrocarbon-like organic aerosols, Fe and Ti (R2 > 0.6), and single-particle mass spectrometry measurements reveal internal mixing of PAHs, with potassium and iron. These results suggest that residential wood burning and vehicle tailpipes are major sources of EPFRs and nontailpipe emissions, such as brake wear and road dust, may contribute to the stabilization of EPFRs. Exposure to the observed EPFR concentrations (18 ± 12 pmol m-3) would be equivalent to smoking ∼0.4-1 cigarette daily. Very strong correlations (R2 > 0.8) of EPFR with hydroxyl radical formation in surrogate lung fluid indicate that exposure to EPFRs may induce oxidative stress in the human respiratory tract.

New Year Fireworks Influence on Air Quality in Case of Stagnant Foggy Conditions

Urban science plays a pivotal role in understanding the complex interactions between fireworks, air quality, and urban environments. Dense firework smoke worsens air quality and poses a health hazard to the public. In this study, we show a situation where extremely foggy meteorological conditions coincided with intense anthropogenic emissions, including fireworks, in an urban area. For the first time, the chemical composition and sources of non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) in outdoor and indoor air were characterized in Vilnius (Lithuania) using an aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) and Positive Matrix Factorization for the period before the fireworks, on New Year’s Eve, and after the fireworks in 2020/2021; thus, typical changes were assessed. Due to stagnant weather conditions and increased traffic, the highest concentrations of black carbon (BC) (13.8 μg/m3) were observed before the fireworks display. The contribution of organic (Org) fraction to the total NR-PM1 mass concentration, in the comparison of the values of a typical night and New Year’s Eve (from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.), increased from 43% to 70% and from 47% to 60% in outdoor and indoor air, respectively. Biomass-burning organic aerosol (BBOA, 48% (44%)) and hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA, 35% (21%)) dominated the organic fraction indoors and outdoors, respectively. HOA was likely linked to increased traffic during the event, while BBOA may have been related to domestic heating and fireworks.

Chemical properties and single-particle mixing state of soot aerosol in Houston during the TRACER campaign

Abstract. A high-resolution soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) was used to selectively measure refractory black carbon (rBC) and its associated coating material using both the ensemble size-resolved mass spectral mode and the event trigger single particle (ETSP) mode in Houston, Texas, in summer 2022. This study was conducted as part of the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program's TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER) field campaign. The study revealed an average (±1σ) rBC concentration of 103 ± 176 ng m−3. Additionally, the coatings on the BC particles were primarily composed of organics (59 %; 219 ± 260 ng m−3) and sulfate (26 %; 94 ± 55 ng m−3). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the ensemble mass spectra of BC-containing particles resolved four distinct types of soot aerosol, including an oxidized organic aerosol (OOABC,PMF) factor associated with processed primary organic aerosol, an inorganic sulfate factor (SO4,BC,PMF), an oxidized rBC factor (O-BCPMF), and a mixed mineral dust–biomass burning aerosol factor with significant contribution from potassium (K-BBBC,PMF). Additionally, K-means clustering analysis of the single-particle mass spectra identified eight different clusters, including soot particles enriched in hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOABC,ETSP), sulfate (SO4,BC,ETSP), two types of rBC, OOA (OOABC,ETSP), chloride (ClBC,ETSP), and nitrate (NO3,BC,ETSP). The single-particle measurements demonstrate substantial variation in BC coating thickness with coating-to-rBC mass ratios ranging from 0.1 to 100. The mixing state index (χ), which denotes the degree of homogeneity of the soot aerosol, varied from 4 % to 94 % with a median of 40 %, indicating that the aerosol population lies in between internal and external mixing but has large temporal and source type variability. In addition, a significant fraction of BC-containing particles, a majority enriched with oxidized organics and sulfate, exhibit sufficiently high κ values and diameters conducive to activation as cloud nuclei under atmospherically relevant supersaturation conditions. This finding bears significance in comprehending the aging processes of rBC-containing particles and their activation into cloud droplets. Our analysis highlights the complex nature of soot aerosol and underscores the need to comprehend its variability across different environments for accurate assessment of climate change.

Comprehensive the seasonal characterization of atmospheric submicron particles at urban sites in the North China Plain

To comprehensively investigate the seasonal variations in submicron particles (PM1 = NR-PM1 + BC) composition, sources and chemical processes, an Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS), along with a multiangle absorption photometer (MAAP), was deployed to observe at urban sites in the North China Plain from October 1, 2015, to July 31, 2016. The PM1 average mass were 36.4 ± 39.0, 32.9 ± 20.7, 40.4 ± 52.4 and 99.0 ± 88.7 μg m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. On the whole, the OA accounted for the largest component of PM1 during the four seasons, with the highest contribution in winter, accounting for 49% on average, followed by autumn (47%), spring (40%) and summer (31%). The secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) mass concentration in summer was the lowest but contributed the most to PM1 in summer (62%), and it was higher than that in spring (46%), autumn (43%) and winter (41%). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to differentiate the high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS) of organic aerosol (OA) into six factors, including two secondary OA (highly oxidized, low-volatility oxygenated organic aerosols (LV-OOA) and less oxidized, semi-volatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA)) and four primary OA (including cooking-related OA (COA), hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA) and coal combustion OA (CCOA)). OOA (LV-OOA + SV-OOA) exhibited the highest OA loading in summer (59%), while POA (CCOA + COA + HOA) exhibited the highest OA loading in winter (62%). The OA exhibited similar bimodal diurnal patterns during the four seasons, the nitrate and sulfate seasonal diurnal variations slightly differed, and the peak value occurred at night in winter and in the morning during the other seasons. The trend of the LV-OOA and SV-OOA diurnal variation in spring, autumn and winter appeared small difference, and the summer vary differently compared to other seasons. However, the diurnal mass concentration in winter was much higher than other seasons. The COA diurnal pattern peaked at noon and at night during the four seasons, corresponding to the peak hours of dining activities. The HOA, BBOA and CCOA seasonal diurnal patterns showed low concentrations during the daytime and high concentrations at night. OA on HPD was 6, 7 and 7 times higher than that on CD in spring, autumn and winter. The SIA concentration significantly increased on HPD in spring (69.3 μg m−3, 52%), autumn (80.6 μg m−3, 50%) and winter (82.4 μg m−3, 43%). The organic nitrate average mass concentrations were 0.6 ± 0.5, 0.7 ± 0.2, 0.8 ± 1.2 and 2.5 ± 2.3 μg m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The organic nitrate diurnal pattern appeared at night was higher than that during the daytime in spring, autumn and winter. The opposite diurnal pattern emerged in summer. The average mass concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the entire observation period reached 73.2 ± 154.2 ng m−3, and the seasonal average mass were 30.4 ± 30.6, 10.7 ± 4.0, 40.5 ± 10.3 and 220.3 ± 246.7 ng m−3 in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The highest diurnal values in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 44.2, 11.7, 71.6 and 366.8 ng m−3, respectively.

Reactive oxygen species generation from winter water-soluble organic aerosols in Delhi's PM2.5

In this study, we evaluate the relative redox activity of various water-soluble organic aerosol (WSOA) sources in Delhi's winter PM2.5, focusing on their capacity to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Using offline-aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), we identified two oxidized factors—more oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (MO-OOA) and less oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA)—and three primary factors, namely nitrogen-enriched hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (NHOA), biomass-burning organic aerosol (BBOA), and solid-fuel combustion organic aerosol (SFC-OA). The ROS-generating capability of PM2.5 was assessed using a real-time oxidative potential (OP) measurement system based on the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. We employed multivariate linear regression technique (MLR) to explore the association between the DTT activity of water-soluble PM2.5 and these identified factors. We found BBOA, SFCOA, and MO-OOA significantly contributed to volume-normalized OP, with intrinsic water-soluble activities of 39 ± 11, 106 ± 31 and 160 ± 43 pmol/min/μg, respectively. MO-OOA, primarily from non-fossil precursors, serves as a proxy for aged biomass burning, which intensifies during winter and significantly influences the DTT activity. Additionally, OP is significantly influenced by WSOA derived from local incomplete solid fuel combustion sources, including coal and wood burning for household cooking and heating, burning of leaves, biodegradable waste, and garbage along the roadside. Interestingly, water-soluble metals (Mn, Cu, and Fe) showed no discernible contribution to the OP. These findings highlight the need for targeted mitigation strategies addressing local combustion processes and unregulated biomass burning to effectively reduce PM health exposure in Delhi.

Characteristics of sub-micron aerosols above the urban canopy in Beijing during warm seasons

To understand the characteristics of atmospheric pollution above the urban canopy in warm seasons, the characteristics of sub-micron aerosol (PM1) was studied based on high-altitude observations at the Beijing 325 m meteorological tower. The PM1 at 260 m was 34, 29 and 21 μg m−3 in May 2015, June 2015, and June 2017, respectively, indicating a reduction in PM1 pollution above the urban canopy. Meanwhile, an overall decrease was also observed in the concentrations of all PM1 chemical species (excluding Chl and BC) and organic aerosol (OA) factors. Previous instances of heavy haze in Beijing often coincided with high humidity and stagnant weather conditions. However, the heightened pollution episodes in June 2017 were accompanied by high wind speeds and low relative humidity. Compared to May 2015, the contribution of secondary components to PM1 in June 2017 was more prominent, with the total proportion of SNA (sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) and more-oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA) to PM1 increased by approximately 10 %. Secondary species of NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, and MO-OOA, as well as black carbon, collectively contributed the vast majority of aerosol extinction coefficient (bext), with the four species contributing a total of ≥96 % to bext at 260 m. Hydrocarbon-like OA, cooking OA, and less-oxidized oxygenated OA have undergone significant reductions, so continued emphasis on controlling local sources to reduce these three aerosol species and addressing regional sources to further mitigate overall aerosol species is imperative. In lower pollution situation, the diurnal variation of PM was smoother, and its pollution sources were more regionally uniform, which might be attributed to the reduced diversity and complexity in the physical and chemical processes in air pollution.

Measurement report: Hygroscopicity of size-selected aerosol particles in the heavily polluted urban atmosphere of Delhi: impacts of chloride aerosol

Abstract. Recent research has revealed the crucial role of wintertime, episodic high chloride (H-Cl) emissions in the Delhi region, which significantly impact aerosol hygroscopicity and aerosol-bound liquid water, thus contributing to the initiation of Delhi fog episodes. However, these findings have primarily relied on modeled aerosol hygroscopicity, necessitating validation through direct hygroscopicity measurements. This study presents the measurements of non-refractory bulk aerosol composition of PM1 from an Aerodyne aerosol chemical speciation monitor and for first-time size-resolved hygroscopic growth factors (nucleation, Aitken, and accumulated mode particles) along with their associated hygroscopicity parameters at 90 % relative humidity using a hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer at the Delhi Aerosol Supersite. Our observations demonstrate that the hygroscopicity parameter for aerosol particles varies from 0.00 to 0.11 (with an average of 0.03 ± 0.02) for 20 nm particles, 0.05 to 0.22 (0.11 ± 0.03) for 50 nm particles, 0.05 to 0.30 (0.14 ± 0.04) for 100 nm particles, 0.05 to 0.41 (0.18 ± 0.06) for 150 nm particles, and 0.05 to 0.56 (0.22 ± 0.07) for 200 nm particles. Surprisingly, our findings demonstrate that the period with H-Cl emissions displays notably greater hygroscopicity (0.35 ± 0.06) in comparison to spans marked by high biomass burning (0.18 ± 0.04) and high hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (0.17 ± 0.05) and relatively cleaner periods (0.27 ± 0.07). This research presents initial observational proof that ammonium chloride is the main factor behind aerosol hygroscopic growth and aerosol-bound liquid water content in Delhi. The finding emphasizes ammonium chloride's role in aerosol–water interaction and related haze/fog development. Moreover, the high chloride levels in aerosols seem to prevent the adverse impact of high organic aerosol concentrations on cloud condensation nuclei activity.

Chemical characterization and sources of background aerosols in the eastern Mediterranean

Measurements of the composition of the gas and particulate phases were conducted from May 9 to June 4 of 2016 at the Finokalia (Greece) remote coastal site in the eastern Mediterranean, continuing the effort to track long term changes of the atmospheric chemical composition in the area. Finokalia is influenced by air masses arriving in the site from regional sources in Europe, Africa, and other locations. In this study, a series of instruments and analysis techniques were used for the first time at the Finokalia site to characterize the composition of the organic aerosol (OA). The PM1 was composed of ammonium sulfate/bisulfate (60%), followed by organics (35%) and black carbon (BC) (4%). The OA was highly oxidized with an average oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratio of 0.81. Source apportionment of high-resolution organic aerosol mass spectra via positive matrix factorization (PMF) identified four factors: less oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA), more oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (MO-OOA), marine-related oxygenated organic aerosol (marine-OOA) and hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA). The LO-OOA (O:C = 0.92) was the dominant factor for most of the campaign (51% of the PM1 OA), while the MO-OOA (O:C = 1.1) was responsible for 11% of the OA. The marine-OOA factor was also highly oxidized (O:C = 1.03), contributing on average 24% to the total OA and was found to be well correlated with sulfate (R2 = 0.83). The anthropogenic HOA factor (O:C = 0.36) was related to activities in the island of Crete. Its mass spectrum was quite similar (R2 = 0.86–0.95) to those of other HOA factors in the literature and its average concentration was 0.2 μg m−3 (14% of OA). High molecular weight compounds were found, suggesting the presence of oligomers in agreement with the presence of a highly oxidized quenching agent. Aromatic VOCs, like benzene, toluene, and xylenes were on average 0.17, 0.66 and 0.36 ppb, respectively with toluene concentrations indicating the presence of a local source despite the remote nature of the site. New particle formation (NPF) was observed during 26% of the days. The air masses during NPF events passed over the island of Crete and the Balkans and were characterized by a low condensation sink (5.9 ± 2.2 10−3 s−1). Nucleation mode particle concentrations during NPF days had an additional evening peak between 17:00 and 22:00, which was accompanied by an HOA peak implying the influence of a source of sub-25 nm particles in the extended area. These findings show that even a relatively remote site like Finokalia is occasionally affected by sources located tens of kilometers away, something that should be taken into account in the interpretation of past and future measurements in this location.

Airmass history, night-time particulate organonitrates, and meteorology impact urban SOA formation rate

With respect to air quality, the San Antonio metropolitan area, with a population of 1.45 million and the second largest city in Texas, has been designated as non-attainment by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in recent years. Despite the operation of multiple stationary air quality monitoring sites by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the in-situ measurements of submicron aerosol and its precursors in the region is limited. To better understand the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the San Antonio urban core, we conducted observations of a range of trace gases, volatile organic compounds, submicron aerosol, and meteorological parameters in May 2017. Data from a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) show that organic aerosol (OA) was the dominant component of non-refractory submicron particulate matter (average±1σ, 55 ± 32 %, 5.86 ± 3.40 μg m−3), followed by sulfate (33 ± 23 %, 3.52 ± 2.47 μg m−3). Aerosol liquid water contents predicted by ISORROPIA-II greatly increase from Continental to Oceanic airmass history scenarios, while inorganic aerosol pH remains very acidic. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the OA mass spectra indicates that two classes of oxygenated OA (less and more-oxidized OOA, LO and MO) together constituted the bulk of OA mass during the study period (MO-OOA: 44 ± 39 %, 2.35 ± 2.07 μg m−3; LO-OOA: 42 ± 34 %, 2.22 ± 1.77 μg m−3), while the fraction of hydrocarbon-like OA was limited (13 ± 21 %, 0.71 ± 1.11 μg m−3). Using in-situ meteorological data and location-specific empirical coefficients, a zero-dimensional model that utilized PMF factors as proxies to calculate the net rate of formation of types of SOA has been developed; similar calculations were used to estimate the formation rate of particulate organonitrates (pON). The results from the model reveal the importance of pON formation in LO-OOA formation overnight and the influence of temperature and photochemistry during the day. The relationships between local atmospheric factors and the net rate of formation of MO-OOA are not statistically significant. These results emphasize how HR-ToF-AMS-PMF factors could be incorporated into chemistry modeling to evaluate quantitatively the rates of formation of SOA and reveal diurnal differences in SOA formation pathways in a major urban area in southern United States.

Increasing Contributions of Temperature-Dependent Oxygenated Organic Aerosol to Summertime Particulate Matter in New York City.

As part of the summer 2022 NYC-METS (New York City metropolitan Measurements of Emissions and TransformationS) campaign and the ASCENT (Atmospheric Science and Chemistry mEasurement NeTwork) observational network, speciated particulate matter was measured in real time in Manhattan and Queens, NY, with additional gas-phase measurements. Largely due to observed reductions in inorganic sulfate aerosol components over the 21st century, summertime aerosol composition in NYC has become predominantly organic (80-83%). Organic aerosol source apportionment via positive matrix factorization showed that this is dominated by secondary production as oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) source factors comprised 73-76% of OA. Primary factors, including cooking-related organic aerosol (COA) and hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) comprised minor fractions of OA, only 13-15% and 10-11%, respectively. The two sites presented considerable spatiotemporal variations in OA source factor concentrations despite similar average PM2.5 concentrations. The less- and more-oxidized OOA factors exhibited clear temperature dependences at both sites with increased concentrations and greater degrees of oxidation at higher temperatures, including during a heatwave. With strong temperature sensitivity and minimal changes in summertime concentrations since 2001, secondary OA poses a particular challenge for air quality policy in NYC that will very likely be exacerbated by continued climate change and extreme heat events.

Characterizing the sources of ambient PM10 organic aerosol in urban and rural Catalonia, Spain

Organic aerosols (OA) have recently been shown to be the dominant contributor to the oxidative potential of airborne particulate matter in northeastern Spain. We collected PM10 filter samples every fourth day from January 2017 to March 2018 at two sampling stations located in Barcelona city and Montseny Natural Park, representing urban and rural areas, respectively. The chemical composition of PM10 was analyzed offline using a broad set of analytical instruments, including high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS), a total organic carbon analyzer (TCA), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ion chromatography (IC), and thermal-optical carbon analyzer. Source apportionment analysis of the water-soluble organic content of the samples measured via HR-ToF-AMS revealed two primary and two secondary sources of OA, which included biomass-burning OA (BBOA), sulfur-containing OA (SCOA), as well as summer- and winter‑oxygenated OA (SOOA and WOOA). The presence of hydrocarbon-like water-insoluble OA was also identified based on concentration trends in black carbon and nitrogen oxides. The results from the source apportionment analysis of the inorganic composition were correlated with different OA factors to assess potential source contributors. Barcelona showed significantly higher average water-soluble OA concentrations (5.63 ± 0.56 μg m-3) than Montseny (3.27 ± 0.37 μg m-3) over the sampling period. WOOA accounted for nearly 27 % of the averaged OA in Barcelona compared to only 7 % in Montseny. In contrast, SOOA had a greater contribution to OA in Montseny (47 %) than in Barcelona (24 %). SCOA and BBOA were responsible for 15–28 % of the OA at both sites. There were also seasonal variations in the relative contributions of different OA sources. Our overall results showed that local anthropogenic sources were primarily responsible for up to 70 % of ambient soluble OA in Barcelona, and regulating local-scale emissions could significantly improve air quality in urban Spain.

Characterization, Sources, and Chemical Processes of Submicron Aerosols at a Mountain Site in Central China

AbstractA field campaign (29 May to 14 June 2018) was conducted at a mountain site in central China. The chemical composition of non‐refractory submicron particulate matter (NR‐PM1) and the particle number size distribution (PNSD) were measured, respectively. The mean NR‐PM1 mass concentration was 20.94 ± 10.14 μg m−3, among which organics (47%) was the most abundant component, followed by sulfate (37%), ammonium (11%), nitrate (4%), and chloride (1%). Notably, sulfate accounted for more than 70% of the secondary inorganic aerosols. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the composition data resulted in three organic aerosol (OA) factors: hydrocarbon‐like OA (HOA), oxygenated OA I (OOA‐I), and oxygenated OA II (OOA‐II). The secondary organic aerosol (SOA) composed of the latter two factors (SOA: OOA‐I + OOA‐II) was dominant in OA (80.7%). The PMF analysis of the PNSD data yielded three factors: new particle formation related mode, growth mode, and accumulation mode, among which the last factor dominated both number and volume ratios. The sulfate formation was characterized by the sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR), heterogeneous sulfate production rate (Phet), and gaseous sulfuric acid concentration, representing secondary sulfate transformation, heterogeneous reactions, and gas phase reactions, respectively. The results showed that Phet was well correlated with both sulfate concentrations and SOR, especially during the polluted periods. Our study demonstrates that photochemically‐driven heterogeneous reactions contribute dominantly to the sulfate formation and SOA is formed predominantly by photochemical oxidation of volatile organic compounds under high temperatures and ultraviolet (UV) intensities, and NOX concentrations on Mt. Wudang during the campaign period.

A 1-year aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) source analysis of organic aerosol particle contributions from anthropogenic sources after long-range transport at the TROPOS research station Melpitz

Abstract. Atmospheric aerosol particles are a complex combination of primary emitted sources (biogenic and anthropogenic) and secondary aerosol resulting from aging processes such as condensation, coagulation, and cloud processing. To better understand their sources, investigations have been focused on urban areas in the past, whereas rural-background stations are normally less impacted by surrounding anthropogenic sources. Therefore, they are predisposed for studying the impact of long-range transport of anthropogenic aerosols. Here, the chemical composition and organic aerosol (OA) sources of submicron aerosol particles measured by an aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) and a multi-angle absorption photometer (MAAP) were investigated at Melpitz from September 2016 to August 2017. The location of the station at the frontier between western and eastern Europe makes it the ideal place to investigate the impact of long-range transport over Europe. Indeed, the station is under the influence of less polluted air masses from westerly directions and more polluted continental air masses from eastern Europe. The OA dominated the submicron particle mass concentration and showed strong seasonal variability ranging from 39 % (in winter) to 58 % (in summer). It was followed by sulfate (15 % and 20 %) and nitrate (24 % and 11 %). The OA source identification was performed using the rolling positive matrix factorization (PMF) approach to account for the potential temporal changes in the source profile. It was possible to split OA into five factors with a distinct temporal variability and mass spectral signature. Three were associated with anthropogenic primary OA (POA) sources: hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA; 5.2 % of OA mass in winter and 6.8 % in summer), biomass burning OA (BBOA; 10.6 % and 6.1 %) and coal combustion OA (CCOA; 23 % and 8.7 %). Another two are secondary and processed oxygenated OA (OOA) sources: less oxidized OOA (LO-OOA; 28.4 % and 36.7 %) and more oxidized OOA (MO-OOA; 32.8 % and 41.8 %). Since equivalent black carbon (eBC) was clearly associated with the identified POA factors (sum of HOA, BBOA, and CCOA; R2= 0. 87), eBC's contribution to each of the POA factors was achieved using a multilinear regression model. Consequently, CCOA represented the main anthropogenic sources of carbonaceous aerosol (sum of OA and eBC) not only during winter (56 % of POA in winter) but also in summer (13 % of POA in summer), followed by BBOA (29 % and 69 % of POA in winter and summer, respectively) and HOA (15 % and 18 % of POA in winter and summer, respectively). A seasonal air mass cluster analysis was used to understand the geographical origins of the different aerosol types and showed that during both winter and summer time, PM1 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 1 µm) air masses with eastern influence were always associated with the highest mass concentration and the highest coal combustion fraction. Since during wintertime CCOA is a combination of domestic heating and power plant emissions, the summer contribution of CCOA emphasizes the critical importance of coal power plant emissions to rural-background aerosols and its impact on air quality, through long-range transportation.

Black carbon content of traffic emissions significantly impacts black carbon mass size distributions and mixing states

Abstract. Both the size and mixing state of black carbon (BC)-containing aerosols are crucial in estimating the environmental, health and climate impacts of BC. Traffic emissions are a major global source of BC; however, parameterization of BC mass size distributions and mixing states associated with traffic remains lacking due to its dependence on vehicle types and driving conditions. To investigate BC mass size distributions and mixing states associated with traffic emissions, a field campaign was conducted in the Guangzhou urban area during winter, which used a system coupling a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) and a single-particle soot photometer (SP2) to measure BC mass size distributions in the range of 100 to 700 nm. The resolved primary organic aerosols were hydrocarbon-like organic aerosols (HOA) and cooking-like organic aerosols (COA), as well as refractory BC (rBC), which was detected by the DMA–SP2 and correlated highly with HOA (R2=0.88), confirming that traffic emissions are the dominant source of atmospheric BC during the observations. The BC mass size distribution was found to be best fitted by a lognormal distribution, with a geometric mean (Dg,BC) of 258±16 nm, varying between 200 and 300 nm. During daytime, active formation of secondary nitrate and organic aerosols was observed, but it had little effect on the variations of BC mass size distributions. Further analyses revealed that Dg,BC was moderately correlated with rBC / HOA (R2=0.41) in a linear form of Dg,BC=34×rBC/HOA+177, demonstrating that the BC content of traffic emissions significantly impacts the BC mass size distributions. In addition, the size-dependent fractions of BC-containing aerosols in all types of aerosols (fBCc) and the fraction of identified externally mixed (bare/thinly coated) BC particles in all BC-containing aerosols (fext) were also characterized. It was found that the daytime secondary aerosol formation reduced both fBCc and fext, with the decrease in fext being more pronounced for larger particles, possibly due to the higher relative coating thickness. Variations in fext during nighttime were mainly controlled by the emission conditions. For example, fext for 600 nm particles decreased from 0.82 to 0.46 as rBC / HOA increased from 1 to 3.5, while the mass ratios of secondary aerosols to rBC varied little, demonstrating that the BC content also significantly affects the mixing states of freshly emitted BC from traffic emissions. This study suggests that BC content can be used as the key factor to parameterize both the BC mass size distribution and mixing states from traffic emissions, which warrants future comprehensive investigation. In addition, other sources such as biomass burning and coal combustion also contribute substantially to BC emissions, and it was important to investigate whether BC content of other major BC sources than traffic is also important in determining BC mass size distributions and mixing states. Overall, results of this study have significant implications for accurate representation of BC from different sources when modeling the impacts of BC.

Ambient carbonaceous aerosol levels in Cyprus and the role of pollution transport from the Middle East

Abstract. The geographical origin and source apportionment of submicron carbonaceous aerosols (organic aerosols, OAs, and black carbon, BC) have been investigated here for the first time, deploying high time-resolution measurements at an urban background site of Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean. This study covers a half-year period, encompassing both the cold and warm periods with continuous observations of the physical and chemical properties of PM1 performed with an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM), an aethalometer, accompanied by a suite of various ancillary offline and online measurements. Carbonaceous aerosols were dominant during both seasons (cold and warm periods), with a contribution of 57 % and 48 % to PM1, respectively, and exhibited recurrent intense nighttime peaks (> 20–30 µg m−3) during the cold period, associated with local domestic heating. The findings of this study show that high concentrations of sulfate (close to 3 µg m−3) were continuously recorded, standing among the highest ever reported for Europe and originating from the Middle East region. Source apportionment of the OA and BC fractions was performed using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) approach and the combination of two models (aethalometer model and multilinear regression), respectively. Our study revealed elevated hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) concentrations in Nicosia (among the highest reported for a European urban background site), originating from a mixture of local and regional fossil fuel combustion sources. Although air masses from the Middle East had a low occurrence and were observed mostly during the cold period, they were shown to strongly affect the mean concentrations levels of BC and OA in Nicosia during both seasons. Overall, the present study brings to our attention the need to further characterize primary and secondary carbonaceous aerosols in the Middle East, an undersampled region characterized by continuously increasing fossil fuel (oil and gas) emissions and extreme environmental conditions, which can contribute to photochemical ageing.

Fine aerosol sources at an urban background site in the Eastern Mediterranean (Nicosia; Cyprus): Insights from offline versus online source apportionment comparison for carbonaceous aerosols

A total of 348 daily PM2.5 samples were collected at an urban background site of Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, for one-year period (October 2018–October 2019) to assess the origin and sources of fine PM at the Eastern Mediterranean, a poorly characterized area of the world.The samples were analysed for water soluble ionic species, elemental and organic carbon, carbohydrates and trace metals, the combination of which were utilized to identify pollution sources by applying Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Six PM2.5 sources, namely long-range transport (LRT; 38 %), traffic (20 %), biomass burning (16 %), dust (10 %), sea salt (9 %) and heavy oil combustion (7 %), were identified.Despite sampling in an urban agglomeration, the chemical fingerprint of the aerosol is largely dictated by air mass origin rather than local sources. Springtime is characterized by the most elevated particulate levels due to the southerly air masses carrying particles from the Sahara Desert. Northerlies are observed throughout the year but are predominant during summer allowing the LRT source to peak (54 % during summer). Only during winter, due to extensive use of biomass combustion for domestic heating (36.6 % during winter), local sources dominate.A co-located online PMF source apportionment of submicron carbonaceous aerosols (Organic Aerosols, OA; Black Carbon) was performed by the means of an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (for OA) and an Aethalometer (for BC) for a four-month period. The comparison between the two methodologies allowed to better assess the robustness and limitations of the two methodologies. More specifically, LRT OA and biomass burning BC apportioned by the offline PMF showed a strong consistency with the online apportioned more oxidized oxygenated OA and BCwb, respectively; cross validating these sources. On the other hand, our traffic factor may contain additional hydrocarbon-like OA and BC from fossil fuel sources other than just vehicular emissions. Finally, the offline biomass burning OA source is likely to contain both primary and secondary OA.

Emissions from ships’ activities in the anchorage zone: A potential source of sub-micron aerosols in port areas

Busan Port is among the world’s top ten most air-polluted ports, but the role of the anchorage zone as a significant contributor to pollution has not been studied. To assess the emission characteristics of sub-micron aerosols, a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) was deployed in Busan, South Korea from September 10 to October 6, 2020. The concentration of all AMS-identified species and black carbon were highest when the winds came from the anchorage zone (11.9 µg·m−3) and lowest with winds from the open ocean (6.64 µg·m−3). The positive matrix factorization model identified one hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) and two oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) sources. HOAs were highest with winds from Busan Port, while oxidized OOAs were predominant with winds from the anchorage zone (less oxidized) and the open ocean (more oxidized). We calculated the emissions from the anchorage zone using ship activity data and compared them to the total emissions from Busan Port. Our results suggest that emissions from ship activities in the anchorage zone should be considered a significant source of pollution in the Busan Port area, especially given the substantial contributions of gaseous emissions (NOx: 8.78%; volatile organic compounds: 7.52%) and their oxidized moieties as secondary aerosols.

Formation pathways of organic aerosols over a tropical coastal atmosphere

The characteristics of non-refractory submicron aerosols (NR-PM1), focusing on organic aerosols, are examined over a tropical coastal location, Thumba, in southern peninsular India. The measurements were carried out using an aerosol chemical speciation monitor during 2017–2021. The results indicated organic aerosols as the major component (67–85%) in the NR-PM1 mass loading during all seasons. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis on the OA mass spectra yielded two factors resolving Hydrocarbon-like organic aerosols (HOA) and Oxygenated organic aerosols (OOA), with the major contribution to OA coming from OOA (mass fraction >50%) during all the seasons. Examination of the diurnal variations revealed the daytime enhancement in OOA and sulfate mass fractions, indicating photochemical production overwhelming the dilution at the surface due to local atmospheric boundary layer expansion. The OOA mass concentration showed a good correlation (R > 0.5) with odd oxygen (O3+NO2) and with an increase in oxygen-to-carbon ratio (ΔO:C = 0.11 to 0.35 with Δodd oxygen = 60 μg m−3 for different seasons) (i.e., increased oxidation degree of OA) signifying the dominance of photochemistry and subsequent enhanced atmospheric oxidative capacity in OOA formation. Interestingly, the aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) doubled during the nighttime (>40 μg m−3) compared to the daytime (<20 μg m−3) in different seasons, indicating the combined impact of varying submicron aerosol composition and ambient relative humidity. Since highly humid (relative humidity >85%) conditions prevail over this tropical coastal station, especially during the nighttime, the role of aqueous-phase formation of OA is also examined. It was found that less oxidized/less-hygroscopic OA were prevalent during the nighttime, resulting in lower aqueous-phase OA processing. During all the seasons, the hygroscopicity of organics (кorganics) reached as high as > 0.22 and was mainly driven by photochemical processing rather than aqueous-phase chemistry. These results highlight the importance of the OA formation pathways in affecting their hygroscopic properties over the tropical atmosphere.

Investigation of four-year chemical composition and organic aerosol sources of submicron particles at the ATOLL site in northern France

This study presents the first long-term online measurements of submicron (PM1) particles at the ATOLL (ATmospheric Observations in liLLe) platform, in northern France. The ongoing measurements using an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) started at the end of 2016 and the analysis presented here spans through December 2020. At this site, the mean PM1 concentration is 10.6 μg m−3, dominated by organic aerosols (OA, 42.3%) and followed by nitrate (28.9%), ammonium (12.3%), sulfate (8.6%), and black carbon (BC, 8.0%). Large seasonal variations of PM1 concentrations are observed, with high concentrations during cold seasons, associated with pollution episodes (e.g. over 100 μg m−3 in January 2017). To study OA origins over this multiannual dataset we performed source apportionment analysis using rolling positive matrix factorization (PMF), yielding two primary OA factors, a traffic-related hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA) and biomass-burning OA (BBOA), and two oxygenated OA (OOA) factors. HOA showed a homogeneous contribution to OA throughout the seasons (11.8%), while BBOA varied from 8.1% (summer) to 18.5% (winter), the latter associated with residential wood combustion. The OOA factors were distinguished between their less and more oxidized fractions (LO-OOA and MO-OOA, on average contributing 32% and 42%, respectively). During winter, LO-OOA is identified as aged biomass burning, so at least half of OA is associated with wood combustion during this season. Furthermore, ammonium nitrate is also a predominant aerosol component during cold-weather pollution episodes – associated with fertilizer usage and traffic emissions. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of submicron aerosol sources at the recently established ATOLL site in northern France from multiannual observations, depicting a complex interaction between anthropogenic and natural sources, leading to different mechanisms of air quality degradation in the region across different seasons.
