Purchasing for 4,000 hotels: the case of Avendra

Avendra is an independent company formed by Marriott International, Inc., Hyatt Hotels Corporation, ClubCorp. USA, Inc., InterContinental Hotel Group, and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts – all leading companies in their respective hospitality markets. Avendra serves the hospitality industry in North America and the Caribbean and is the largest hospitality procurement service company in the world. This viewpoint article presents a few concepts of procurement and purchasing for hotels. Explains the origin, concept, philosophy and operation of Avendra. Identifies the future challenges for the company. Concludes by listing the key benefits for suppliers, hotels and, most importantly, to the customers should similar operations evolve in different parts of the world.

Engineering Process Failure—Hyatt Walkway Collapse

Was the collapse of the Hyatt hotel atrium walkway a senseless tragedy or a steppingstone in the betterment of the engineering and scientific endeavor? The collapse claimed 114 lives, leading to a great public and professional outcry and having a dramatic impact on the careers and lives of many fine professionals. The architecture and engineering (A&E) community in the United States began a soul-searching debate on issues as diverse as how project workflow is managed to professional responsibility and ethics. Fundamental errors were identified in the project interaction within the A&E group as well as the construction industry. This review provides a presentation of the demand-capacity ratio within elements primary to the failure and presents results of detailed inelastic analysis of the box girder-to-hanger rod connection. The Engineer of Record and Design Responsibility

For nineteen years since the tragic collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Hotel's walkway on July 17, 1981, the engineering profession and construction industry has studied and endeavored to understand what happened, why it happened, who was at fault, what should have been done to prevent it, and how the engineering and construction industry can guard against future structural collapses. This paper, by the Structural Engineer of Record, addresses the events during and subsequent to the design, bidding, and construction of the walkway and the investigation that followed the collapse. It discusses the tragedy, its continuing impact on the public and the standard of the professional practice of engineering, and the two fundamental issues: (1) What is the role and responsibility of the Engineer of Record? and (2) Can design responsibility be delegated in today's construction market?

Honor your colleagues at the AGU Spring Meeting

AGU will pay tribute to the 1987 Medalists and Fellows on Wednesday, May 20, at the Honors Ceremony, Reception, and Banquet. The William Bowie Medal, the John Adam Fleming Medal, the Charles A. Whitten Medal, and one of the James B. Macelwane medals will be presented at the ceremony, which begins at 5:45 P.M. in the Hyatt Hotel in Baltimore, Md. Also to be honored at the ceremony, which is the most important social function at the Spring Meeting, are those newly elected Fellows (see Eos, April 7, 1987, p. 205) who will be attending. The Walter H. Bucher Medal, the Harry H. Hess Medal, the Maurice Ewing Medal, and two James B. Macelwane medals will be presented at the AGU 1987 Fall Meeting.

Rescue workers' reactions following the hyatt hotel disaster

Abstract The collapse of the skywalks at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Kansas City was one of the most traumatic man-made disasters in this country's history. The workers and volunteers who participated in the rescue activities were exposed to numerous stressors that made them at risk for physical and emotional sequelae. The purpose of this study was to describe the physical and emotional reactions and the help-seeking behaviors of these rescue workers. Findings support the need for more primary prevention services for rescure workers.

ERGO-PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY DECREASING PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES, INCREASING ALERTNESS, WORK ABILITY AND WORK ENGAGEMENT AT THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT OF BALI HYATT HOTEL, DENPASAR

Employee's performance can be determined from physiological responses, alertness, work abilityand work engagement. The performance can be achieved when employees are able to adjust the capacity to the existing task demands, once is in accounting department. This department requires the ability to adjust the capacity of employees physiologically and psychologically with the tasks demands, one of the tasks was maintaining financial balance by using a computer. Employees work comfortably, safely, healthy thus increasing productivity. The working conditions need to be improved to prevent fatigue, complaints, discomfort, injury, stress, until disorder/disease that affects the company performance. It is to apply ergonomics interventions with emphasis on the psychological approach or Ergo-Psychophysiology.Experimental studies have been carried out with treatment by subject design to the 17 employees at accounting department of Bali Hyatt Hotel, Denpasar. Sample performance observed when working in conventional condition (first period) and when working with treated Ergo-Psychophysiology (second period). Employee performance data between the two periods compared and analyzed by t-paired test at the significance level of 0.05.The data results showed that a decreased in the physiological response based on the decrease of fatigue was 22.18 % and musculoskeletal complaints was 9.08 %. The alertness of employee increased based on increase of pace of work was 12.73 %, an increase of accuracy was 9.52 % and increased of constancy was 21.62 %. An increased of work ability was 7.57% and an increased of work engagement was 16.73 % (p<0.05). There was no significance result for workload based on the working pulse (p>0.05). The results showed that the Ergo- Psychophysiological influenced employee performance based on physiological responses, alertness, work ability and work engagement, although the workload is not affected. This suggests that task demand of employment in the accounting department is more mental abilities than physical activity.It was concluded that the Ergo-Psychophysiology decrease the physiological response based on the decrease in fatigue and musculoskeletal complaints. Ergo-Psychophysiology also increases alertness, work ability and work engagement. It is suggested to support on mental working condition in the accounting department.
