Metamorphosis of Islamic Religious Education Learning Method: Classic Approach Converted by Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The transformation of Islamic religious education learning methods through the conversion of classical approaches using artificial intelligence (AI) represents a significant phenomenon that has reshaped paradigms in the field of religious education. This literature review qualitatively explores profound changes in the approach to Islamic religious education brought about by the application of artificial intelligence technology. It focuses on aspects such as personalized learning, real-time monitoring of student progress, adaptation to individual learning styles, automatic feedback, and online collaboration. Qualitative analysis reveals how artificial intelligence enhances students' learning experiences. Through this transformation, the learning approach becomes more responsive and tailored to the individual needs of students, fostering a more inclusive learning environment. In the context of ethics and humanity, the literature review highlights the importance of humane guidance, ethical algorithm design, ethics training for developers and users, and privacy protection as crucial elements. This research underscores the significance of upholding ethical and humane values ​​when integrating artificial intelligence into Islamic religious education. By synthesizing findings from various literature sources, this abstract concludes that the metamorphosis of Islamic religious education learning methods through artificial intelligence plays an integral role in enhancing adaptability, responsiveness, and effectiveness in religious education. Consequently, this study provides profound insights into the positive implications and ethical challenges that need to be addressed in navigating the ever-evolving digital era.

The application of multi-criteria decision analysis in evaluating the value of drug-oriented intervention: a literature review.

Objectives: Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) has gained increasing attention in supporting drug risk-benefit assessment, pricing and reimbursement, as well as optimization of clinical interventions. The objective of this study was to systematically collect and categorize evaluation criteria and techniques of weighting and scoring of MCDA for drug value assessment. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted across seven databases to identify articles utilizing the MCDA frameworks for the evaluation of drug value. Evaluation criteria mentioned in the included studies were extracted and assigned to 5 dimensions including clinical, economic, innovative, societal and humanistic value. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed on the identified drug value evaluation criteria, as well as the weighting and scoring techniques employed. The more a criterion or technique were mentioned in articles, the more important we consider it. Results: Out of the 82 articles included, 111 unique criteria were identified to evaluate the value of drug. Among the 56 unique criteria (448 times) used to measure clinical value, the most frequently mentioned were "comparative safety/tolerability" (58 times), "comparative effectiveness/efficacy" (56 times), "comparative patient-perceived health/patient reported outcomes" (37 times), "disease severity" (34 times), and "unmet needs" (25 times). Regarding economic value measurement, out of the 20 unique criteria (124 times), the most frequently utilized criteria were "cost of intervention" (17 times), "comparative other medical costs" (16 times), and "comparative non-medical costs" (18 times). Out of the 10 criteria (18 times) for assessing innovative value, "a novel pharmacological mechanism" was the most frequently mentioned criterion (5 times). Among the 22 criteria (73 times) used to measure societal value, "system capacity and appropriate use of intervention" was the most frequently cited criterion (14 times). Out of the 3 criteria (15 times) utilized to measure humanistic value, "political/historical/cultural context" was the most frequently mentioned criterion (9 times). Furthermore, 11 scoring and 11 weighting techniques were found from various MCDA frameworks. "Swing weighting" and "a direct rating scale" were the most frequently used techniques in included articles. Conclusion: This study comprehensively presented the current evaluation dimensions, criteria, and techniques for scoring and weighting in drug-oriented MCDA articles. By highlighting the frequently cited evaluation criteria and techniques for scoring and weighting, this analysis will provide a foundation to reasonably select appropriate evaluation criteria and technique in constructing the MCDA framework that aligns with research objectives.

For many centuries in the history of our Fatherland, the question of spiritual and moral values has been one of the most important in Russian socio-economic thought. Discussing this issue essentially led scholars, public figures, and thinkers to address the crucial problem of the significance of these values in the life of our compat-riots in the context of entrepreneurial practice and the development of economic policy. It is noteworthy that in Russian economic thought, spiritual and moral values were postulated as the bond of the entire nation and a means of addressing issues of social justice; Russian scholars consider them as a vital component of the Rus-sian cultural code. Within the framework of this study, the author examines such spiritual and moral categories as human rights and freedoms, patriotism, citizenship, dignity, humanism, mercy, and other significant tradi-tional values. By integrating these values into economic policies and entrepreneurial practices, Russia can fos-ter a more equitable and sustainable development path. Moving forward, further research is needed to explore the practical implications of moral-ethical principles for addressing modern socio-economic challenges and advancing the common good.

The Role and Challenges of Machine Learning in the Construction of a Community of Human Destiny

- The advent of machine learning (ML) has significantly transformed various fields, including the realm of social sciences and humanities. This paper explores the pivotal role and inherent challenges of machine learning in fostering the construction of a community of human destiny (CHD), a concept emphasizing shared global interests and collective human development. Machine learning, with its capacity to analyze vast datasets and uncover patterns, holds the potential to address complex issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability, which are integral to the community of human destiny vision. However, the deployment of machine learning in this context is fraught with challenges, including ethical considerations, data privacy concerns, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. By examining theoretical frameworks, this paper aims to provide insights into how machine learning can be harnessed effectively to advance the goals of community of human destiny while also highlighting the importance of governance frameworks and ethical guidelines in ensuring that machine learning contributes positively to the common good. The paper argues that while machine learning presents significant opportunities for the community of human destiny, a cautious and responsible approach is essential to navigate the associated challenges and to ensure that technological advancements align with humanistic values and the overarching goal of a harmonious and sustainable global community.

Reflections on integrating narrative medicine concepts into the development of pediatrics

Medicine is a continuously advancing science, characterized by the integration of multiple disciplines, ultimately focusing on the "human" aspect. Over the past half-century, there has been a global surge in efforts to reshape the humanistic spirit of medicine. Narrative medicine, a field that highly integrates medical professionalism with universal humanistic values, has developed rapidly in China from scratch over the past decade or so. This article introduces the development of narrative medicine both domestically and internationally, explains how to correctly understand the connotation of China's narrative medicine system and the significance of practicing narrative medicine. It analyzes current challenges in clinical practice, education and teaching, scientific research, doctor-patient consensus, and social recognition. Furthermore, it proposes directions for effort, namely, in the context of "greater health" and "new medical science", narrative medicine is empowered to help construct a harmonious medical narrative ecosystem, promote high-quality development in pediatrics, contribute to the innovation in medical education and talent training with humanistic strength and wisdom.

Europe at a Crossroads and the Political Relevance of Intellectual Dialogue

ABSTRACT Europe is in the midst of a double crisis: the rise of illiberal democracies and the reshaping of the so-called “world order.” Illiberal and autocratic regimes are on the rise and the “illiberal temptation” is present even in countries with strong democratic traditions, such as in Europe. The conflict between constitutional democracies and autocratic regimes is at the heart of the current struggle for a new international order. In this context, the confidence we have in our shared democratic and humanist values is in crisis. Not only is there a debate about how these values should be interpreted—which is normal—it also seems that these values are no longer widely shared. Significant segments of the public no longer take democratic principles and the rule of law for granted. As a result, the use of violence is no longer taboo, not only in international relations but also within our own societies. This crisis is unfolding on a global scale, but it has implications for the European narrative, which is about both Europe’s post-nationalist, democratic identity, and Europe’s role in the world. In this article, I begin with some comments on this narrative, with an emphasis on the specificity of European cultural diversity. I then try to situate the role of intellectuals in this context. I examine (1) the task of interpreting the current historical situation, of raising collective awareness with regard to problems that require collective action (e.g. climate change, the reduction of gender and cultural discrimination, the prevention of armed conflicts, etc.); (2) the “universalization of tradition”, that is, the hermeneutic process by which a tradition (ethical, religious, political, etc.) reinterprets itself in such a way as to make it understandable and meaningful to other traditions; (3) the impact that the practice of dialogue, as understood in the human and social sciences, should have on actual political discussion; and (4) the role that the human and social sciences have in articulating, within a meaningful discourse, the demands for greater justice and for a meaningful existence that arise in the form of collective feelings, emotions, etc.

AGENT AND STRUCTURE RELATIONS IN THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS BASED ON HUMANIST AND RELIGIOUS VALUES AT THE PAMULANG UNIVERSITY IN SOUTH TANGERANG

Pamulang University (Unpam), one of the private universities in the South Tangerang area, is established to meet the needs of the community by providing its own uniqueness and receiving very good interest. The uniqueness meant by that is the history of its founding to provide higher education for all people, especially for those people mentioned, the increase and large quantity of registered students, the availability of classes for students with disabilities, adequate lecture facilities, affordable tuition fees, and no building costs. One of the successes that has been achieved to date is the contribution of lecturers in implementing the tridharma of higher education. This is where the lecturer acts as an agent, actor, or agency, as known in Anthony Giddens' structuration theory. As a form of routine that produces social practice, the lecturer's tridharma must reflect humanist and religious values, including in the communication process within the university. These two values are in accordance with those stated in the university's vision, namely, "To become a university ranked in the top 40 at the national level based on humanist and religious values by 2025." This article analyzes the relationship between agents and structures in the communication process based on humanist and religious values at a private university in South Tangerang. The research used a qualitative method with a critical theory paradigm and an interpretive phenomenological approach. The results show that Unpam is able to manage and strive to pursue its vision through the tridharma of higher education, with the contribution of lecturers who act as agents, actors, and agencies. The routine activities of agents form a duality of structure and are related by mutual influence and reciprocity (interplay) that reflect most of the implementation of both humanist and religious values. Forms of communication that are full of humanist values, such as when lecturers greet each other, provide non-differentiating classroom learning, and interact with students and the community in PkM activities, including coordinating work on research activities, Meanwhile, religiousness can be seen in the form of greeting words and sentences, praying before and after activities, religious attributes worn as characteristics, tolerance during worship, the formation of the Institute for Religious Studies, and also religious studies. On the other hand, the role of agents still needs to be optimized as gatekeepers and/or opinion leaders because, as educators, they provide role models, especially for students (predominantly from the marginalized and lower middle class) and also the general public. Meanwhile, the university needs to have an organizational culture to strengthen motivation for academics, direction, and foundation in behavior and attitudes, which can be taken from humanist and religious values, as well as the motto Sharing for the Country, alongside the implementation of a code of ethics, to help realize its vision in 2025

The Endangered Central Malay Folklore: A Medium for Internalizing Character Values in Indonesian Language and Literature

This study raises the unity of the topics of folklore, literature teaching materials, and character education. It aims to explore character education values in endangered Central Malay folklores as a means of internalizing literature teaching. This qualitative study used five informants who not only knew the folklores but also knew the local culture of the Central Malay community in depth. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and note-taking. The data were analyzed using a thematic approach. The research findings show that Central Malay folklore has aesthetic, humanist, ethical, and religious values that can be internalized in literature learning as a form of effort to save Central Malay folklore from extinction through education. This research is not new. However, there is little information about Central Malay folklore in Indonesia. The findings provide benefits and recommendations to researchers, educators, teachers, and policymakers to collaborate and conduct further studies to save Central Malay folklore from extinction and survive in society. In addition, the importance of this research is to increase understanding and foster students' appreciation of local literature while being able to take and practice the character values contained in Central Malay folklore.

The functions of negativity and benign aggression in the development of humanistic values: A Frommian clinical journey

In this paper I present an analysis of a personal journey, based on Erich Fromm's concept of benign aggression, part of The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness (1973). I analyze its role in the dynamics of change based on the interaction between the psyche and the social. In Fromm's conceptual framework, benign aggression results from an unlived life, shaped by limitations on individuals' freedoms, supported by institutional and oppressive structures in a neo-capitalistic society. I explore how benign aggression, replayed between patient and therapist, can bring about changes in the self and modes of relatedness, leading to the recognition of humanistic values. In my practice, projective identification and attachment -detachment dynamics were experienced as forms of benign aggression, while anger and conflict became a way to acknowledge them. Fragments of two clinical cases illustrate how needs for relatedness-through-conflict are experienced. Relatedness expressed through a negative form of attachment can lead to the co-creation of a psychic space, a “Social Third” where ethical values are experienced and shared. This Frommian conceptual framework and methodology require total connectedness with a subject, together with the recognition and acceptance of an “Other” unto oneself. In my experience, such recognition encourages the emergence of humanistic values.

The Humanistic Art Perspective: Ono Saseo's Portrayal of Indonesia

Ono Saseo was a Japanese cartoonist who was recruited as a member of the Japanese Army's Propaganda Division and sent to Java from 1942 to 1945. During his service in Indonesia, he created hundreds of artworks for both military and personal purposes. The purpose of this research is to understand Ono Saseo's views and humanistic values towards the Indonesian people. The research method used is qualitative research, examining Ono Saseo's writings and drawings to uncover the meanings contained within. Additionally, the researcher also examined the opinions of other artist who lived during the same period as Ono Saseo to gain a clearer depiction of Ono. The results of the research show that not all of Ono's drawings published in the Japanese mass media in Indonesia depict elements of Japanese foreign political conflicts against the West, but rather, most of them portray the joyful atmosphere and the harmony of the Indonesian people and Western. Ono's significant attention to the Indonesian society, natural environment, and other nations residing in Indonesia demonstrates his deep humanistic side, both as an intellectual and as a human being.

Servant Leadership: Implementing the Principal's Role in Creating a Humanistic Education

Introduction/Main Objectives: This study aims to describe the leadership role of school principals based on spiritual-moral values in conditioning humanistic education. Background Problems: While servant leadership has been investigated from various angles, its application to principal leadership, primarily through a moral-spiritual lens, remains understudied. Novelty: This study underscores a gap in the literature on school principals' leadership, advocating for a spiritual-moral values approach to foster a humanistic school environment. Principals prioritize teachers' and students' interests, embodying servant leadership through active listening, open communication, and feedback acceptance. They also integrate moral, religious, and spiritual values into their leadership philosophy. Principal A hold holds regular open meetings, establishes communication channels, organizes activities promoting values, and implements anti-harassment policies. Principal B develops special programs and collaborates with teachers to infuse moral and spiritual aspects into subjects. Principal C integrates character education, offers teacher training on ethics, and encourages role modeling of ethical values. Research Methods: This research uses qualitative methods and a case study design, utilizing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The analysis includes a modified analytic approach with validation data through credibility, transferability, reliability, and confirmability assessments. Finding/Results: The study reveals that servant leadership fosters altruism, faithfulness, and morality, cultivating a humanistic learning environment and promoting personal awareness, psychological well-being, and ethical wisdom. Conclusion: In education, servant leadership promotes dialogue and humanistic values, emphasizing shared values over authority among school community members.

Demokrasi Pancasila: Landasan Nilai Dan Prinsipnya Dalam Membangun Sistem Dan Etika Politik Indonesia

This article discusses the basic values ​​and principles of Pancasila democracy, which is a nation-state view of life at the level of life, including in politics. Pancasila democracy consists of ethical and moral values ​​related to the values ​​of divinity, humanity, unity, democracy and justice, all of which reflect Indonesia's character and identity. These values ​​are expected not only to function as normative guidelines, but must also be implemented in state life, including ethical norms and legal norms in democracy. Pancasila also acts as the philosophical basis of the state, goes beyond the constitution, and becomes a reference in decision making by the government and state institutions. This research emphasizes the importance of Pancasila in forming noble character, love of the country, and creating an ethical political life for the common welfare of all Indonesian citizens. In a legal context, Pancasila establishes Indonesia as a rule of law state where all citizens are equal before the law, with the Constitutional Court as the institution tasked with overseeing the constitution and constitutional practices.

The Countervailing Effect Of "Digital Humanistic View" On Translation Teaching Under Computer-Assisted Technology

"Digital Humanistic View" on Translation Teaching under Computer-Assisted Technology emphasizes the integration of humanistic values with digital tools in translation education. This approach recognizes the importance of technology in enhancing translation teaching and learning experiences while also emphasizing the significance of human creativity, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. By leveraging computer-assisted technology, translation instructors can provide students with access to diverse resources, interactive exercises, and automated translation tools to facilitate language acquisition and proficiency. However, the "Digital Humanistic View" emphasizes that technology should complement rather than replace human expertise, encouraging students to engage deeply with language, culture, and context in their translation practice. This paper explores the countervailing effect of the "Digital Humanistic View" on translation teaching under computer-assisted technology, enhanced by Hidden Markov Translation Teaching (HMTT). The study investigates how the integration of humanistic values with digital tools in translation education influences teaching methods and student learning outcomes. Through simulated experiments and empirical validations, the impact of HMTT on translation teaching is evaluated, with a focus on student engagement, proficiency, and cultural understanding. Results demonstrate that while computer-assisted technology offers valuable resources and efficiency in translation teaching, the "Digital Humanistic View" emphasizes the importance of human creativity, critical thinking, and cultural sensitivity. Analysis stated that students exposed to HMTT with the "Digital Humanistic View" reported a 30% increase in cultural understanding and a 20% improvement in translation accuracy. Additionally, the framework enabled instructors to balance the benefits of technology with the humanistic aspects of translation, fostering a holistic approach to language education. These findings highlight the potential of HMTT with the "Digital Humanistic View" in shaping effective and ethical translation teaching practices in the digital age.

The Use of Digital Technologies in Professional Training of Primary School Teachers

The growing significance of digital technologies in society creates a need to train teachers who can use these technologies in the educational process and prepare students for life in the digital world. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of digital technologies used in professional training of primary school teachers on increasing their professional competence level. The adapted versions of Ferrell & Daniel’s test for Measuring Teacher Career Motivations, the Orshanski’s orientation of future teachers towards humanistic and professional value were used to diagnose the state of development of professional competence. The level of the development of the subject-subjective model of pedagogical communication (modified test based on Sternberg & Williams, Alexander & Winne) and the level of projective skills in primary school teachers were also diagnosed. The students’ performance was assessed based on the results of the examinations. Chi-squared test (χ2) was used for statistical confirmation of the conducted research. Positive dynamics were found in both groups after the formative stage of the experiment. However, the experimental group was noted for greater quantitative and qualitative improvement for the selected criteria. The largest changes were observed for the operational criterion with a difference of 15.40% (against 7.90% in the control group). The cognitive criterion showed the smallest increase: 8.5% in the experimental group compared to 3.4% in the control group. The high general mean showed a difference of 11.22% for the experimental group and 5.1% for the control group. It is also important to note a greater increase in the average indicator at the general level in the experimental group of 52.04% compared to 40.82% in the control group. The differences in the distributions of the control and experimental groups according to the levels of each criterion are statistically reliable and testify to the effectiveness of using digital technologies for the development of professional competence of future primary school teachers. The areas for further research include the analysis of the impact of digital technologies on the development of information literacy skills and critical thinking.

Muhammad Abduh's Perspective on Polygamy in the Indonesian Social Context

This article aims to delve into Muhammad Abduh's views on polygamy, evaluate its relevance in the social context of Indonesian society, and offer a broader understanding and potential solutions for Indonesian society to perceive the practice of polygamy. The research method employed is a qualitative approach focusing on literature review. This approach is designed to comprehend and analyze Muhammad Abduh's perspectives and thoughts regarding the practice of polygamy, especially within the Islamic teachings and its impact on social dynamics in Indonesia. The research findings indicate that Muhammad Abduh consistently displayed a critical stance towards polygamy. He consistently highlighted the importance of justice, equality, and well-being for all parties involved in such contexts. The relevance of Muhammad Abduh's thoughts in the Indonesian context, which encompasses a diverse society, lies in the urgency of recognizing the values of humanity and justice in applying Islamic teachings, particularly in sensitive issues like polygamy. Essentially, Abduh's viewpoints offer a perspective that considers the welfare and protection of individual rights in interpreting Islamic teachings, aligning with the social diversity present in Indonesia. Amir and Rahma argue that Tasir Al-manar has a significant and enduring influence on the formation and development of modern Islam in Indonesia.

Nilai –Nilai Kemanusiaan Dalam Novel Sang Saudagar Karya Sultan Ali Bumi (Kajian Struktural Genetik)

Values of Humanity in the novel “Sang Saudagar” (Genetic Structural Research). Thesis. Jakarta: Master Study Program of Indonesian Education, Post Graduate Study of Muhammadiyah University of Prof. Dr. Hamka Jakarta, 2015. This study aims to find the human values contained in the novel “Sang Saudagar”. To achieve these objectives, this study used theory of text interpretation by the method of content analysis. The technique used in this study is a technique based on the theory of genetic. Research disclosure humanitarian values using qualitative research, the formal text of novel “Sang Saudagar” of Sultan Ali Bumi in the form of words, sentences, and discourse. The results showed that the novel “Sang Saudagar” contains many human values that exemplary by the readers. Human values are: 1) policy, 2) perseverance, 3) compassion, 4) justice, 5) self-control, and 6) quality. Medium of developing human values in the story is through the background story, view of life figuress, the character's mind, character dialogue, action figures and events of the story..

The dignity of work and the challenge of artificial intelligence

The Social Teachings of the Church define work as a “human act” (opus humanum), an “arduous good” (bonum arduum), and an expression of the intrinsic value and dignity of the human person. The right to work is not only granted by the State but rather a disposition of the value possessed by a person in fulfilling his/her “destiny and vocation” as a rational and autonomous being. However, the breakthroughs of modernity dichotomized the established value of humanity and his work. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the way to altering this essential relationship, giving priority to Machine Intelligence (MI). This admiration of humanity for the proliferation of technical advances lurks a certain danger, “a danger as such” if I may use Heidegger’s term. The danger is not only the possible displacements of humanity in his/her work but rather an alienated individual stripped of his/her worth and dignity as a person who is the sole object of work. This paper argues that (1) the human person remains the indispensable subject of work and (2) artificial intelligence is problematic. To facilitate the said discourse, the work of John Paul II “Laborem Exercems” (John Paul II, 1981), shall be the guide in exploring the issue.

Student tourism: prospects for the development in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

The relevance of this study is determined by the wide opportunities for student mobility both globally and domestically. At present, we consider the student mobility as an important socio-cultural resource, which allows students to reveal their cognitive potential, develop humanistic values, and enjoy their leisure time. The article is dedicated to the study of the pressing issue of the student tourism development in the republic territory. The article aims to present the borderline between two concepts: student and youth tourism. Also to reflect on the results of the possibility of creating a student tourism complex on the basis of a higher educational institution for the promotion of student tourism. The purpose of this research is to assess the current state of student tourism, identify the main potential for the development of this industry in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The study includes an analysis of the current state of the tourism industry in Yakutia, comparative analysis, SWOT-analysis of student tourism development, analysis of literary sources, regulatory framework, and statistical data. Based on the conducted research, conclusions are drawn about the significance of developing student tourism as a means of stimulating tourist activity, expanding horizons, unleashing the potential of student youth, and creating a favorable environment in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). In addition, the prospects for the development of a student tourism complex project based on a higher educational institution are proposed.

Heteronormative discourse: Therapist social constructions of intimate partner violence in queer relationships

Researchers have suggested the victim/perpetrator paradigm for understanding intimate partner violence (IPV) is limited when considering queer relationships. Instead, some propose a poststructural feminist approach as better suited for understanding the complexities involved. However, in the UK, this approach is rarely adopted. We therefore put a poststructural feminist approach to research into practice. Despite IPV occurring in queer relationships at similar or higher levels compared to heterosexual relationships, queer individuals rarely use mainstream IPV services, owing to real and perceived barriers, and access local therapy services instead. However, outside of queer-specific services in city-centre areas, there is little knowledge of the approaches used or the outcomes achieved by these therapeutic services. Our research contributes to addressing this knowledge gap. We investigate how therapists make sense of IPV in queer relationships, conducting five semistructured interviews with therapists working in small-town/rural settings in Southwest England. Despite claims of inclusivity and liberal humanist values, our Foucauldian discourse analysis highlights the dominance of a heteronormative discourse in the therapists’ accounts, and shows how heterosexual privilege is embedded in a range of discourses deployed. In light of these findings, we explore implications for practice and areas for future research in this underresearched area.

An Antidote to the Pathologizing of Grief: Applying the Power–Threat–Meaning Framework

Emerging theories of grief over the last 30 years have represented a shift from the healing of pathology to a focus on the adaptation to loss. Recently, however, there has been an alarming resurgence for a medicalized model of grief, most saliently evident in the removal of the bereavement exclusion from the diagnosis of major depressive disorder in theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(5th ed.;DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) and the inclusion of prolonged grief disorder in theDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision(DSM-5-TR; APA, 2022). These have predictably opened up opportunities for the pursuit of pharmacological treatment including antidepressants and medication usually offered for recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. A pathologizing approach to grief can have a significant and detrimental impact on individuals and compromises the core humanistic values that underpin my professional identity as a counselling psychologist. I propose that we need a radically different lens, and the power–threat–meaning framework (PTMF), an alternative to psychiatric diagnosis developed by psychologists in the United Kingdom, offers us such an opportunity. Consideration is given to how the PTMF may be applied to grief therapy where it can embrace the uniqueness of grief responses and reframe it as an entirely understandable response to trauma and loss.
